I am passionate about nursing because it blends my desire to help others with the opportunity to make a tangible difference in people's lives. From a young age, I have always been drawn to careers where I can care for others, provide emotional support, and have a meaningful impact on their health and well-being. Nursing allows me to combine compassion, scientific knowledge, and practical skills to address the needs of individuals, families, and communities. My passion stems not only from the personal fulfillment I get from helping others but also from the realization that nurses are essential in shaping the healthcare system and improving patient outcomes.
Through my career as a nurse, I hope to gain an in-depth understanding of the human body, healthcare systems, and patient care protocols. I want to build strong relationships with patients, helping them navigate their healthcare journey with empathy and professionalism. The medical field is ever-evolving, and I am excited to continually learn, adapt, and grow in my role. In addition to the technical skills I will gain, I also look forward to the opportunity to provide emotional support to those who are vulnerable and struggling. I want to be the kind of nurse who not only addresses the physical needs of patients but also uplifts their spirits and eases their fears.
My goal is to specialize in pediatric nursing. I have always had a soft spot for children and feel strongly about working with this demographic. Caring for children requires a combination of clinical expertise, creativity, and patience, and I believe I am well-suited to provide the care and support they need during their healthcare journeys. Children often cannot express their pain and discomfort in the same way adults do, so I want to develop the skills to advocate for them and ensure that they receive the best care possible. As a pediatric nurse, I would have the opportunity to positively impact not just the children but also their families, who often need reassurance and support as well.
The impact I hope to make in pediatric nursing is multifaceted. First, I aim to improve the quality of care by staying up-to-date with the latest research and clinical practices. Children deserve the highest standard of care, and I want to contribute to that by working in a setting that prioritizes evidence-based practices. Second, I hope to foster a caring environment where children feel safe and heard. I want to be the nurse who takes the time to explain things in simple terms, make the hospital experience less frightening, and give parents the confidence that their child is in capable hands. Lastly, I hope to advocate for the well-being of children outside the hospital setting by participating in health promotion initiatives and community outreach programs that raise awareness about child health issues.
In the long term, I aim to be a voice for vulnerable populations and contribute to the advancement of pediatric nursing, whether through direct patient care or by engaging in nursing education and research. My goal is to leave a lasting legacy of compassionate, high-quality care and to ensure that every child, regardless of background, has access to the care they need to thrive.
CREATIVE. INSPIRED. HAPPY Mid-Career Writing Scholarship
Writing has always been more than just putting words on paper; it's a method for me to connect with others while also developing my own ideas. I enjoy writing because it helps me to express my feelings, convey my experience, and offer ideas that may resonate with others. I enjoy creating narratives that reflect my distinct perspective, whether through journaling, essays, or creative writing. Writing teaches me patience and creativity, and it has been a valuable tool for communicating effectively at school, at work, and with my peers.
My enthusiasm for writing is also linked to my desire to become a nurse. I believe that effective nursing is built on solid communication. Writing can help you improve your ability to accurately express instructions, document patient needs, and even offer words of encouragement. Writing also helps me develop empathy—a necessary skill in healthcare—by prompting me to think thoroughly about other people's experiences and emotions.
Furthering my education is critical to accomplishing my goals, both as a future nurse and as a lifelong learner. Growing up, I had hardships that taught me resilience and the value of hard work. Balancing school, cheerleading, employment, and household chores has been difficult, but it has taught me the importance of perseverance. Pursuing higher education is how I honor those teachings and continue to strive for excellence.
Education, in my opinion, serves as a portal to chances beyond personal accomplishment. It is about gaining the knowledge and abilities necessary to positively impact others. As someone who aspires to provide care and support to patients, I recognize that nursing involves both technical expertise and a sympathetic attitude. Higher education will prepare me to fulfill such demands while also providing opportunities for me to advance in leadership roles and advocate for others.
Furthermore, my desire to continue my education is motivated by a desire to encourage others, particularly young Black girls who, like me, want to break down barriers and make a difference. Representation is important, and I want to show that you can reach your goals with persistence, hard work, and access to resources like this scholarship. My path to become a nurse will benefit not just myself but also people who look up to me and believe in their own abilities.
In conclusion, writing fuels my creativity and passion, allowing me to speak effectively and empathize with others. It is a skill I will take with me into my nursing job, where clear and caring communication is essential. Furthering my education is about more than just getting a degree; it's about preparing to help others, conquering obstacles, and inspiring those who follow. I am delighted about the opportunity to improve academically and personally, and I am motivated to apply what I learn to make a meaningful contribution to my community.

Watching a parent battle cancer is a transformational experience that is tough to describe. It substantially influences your outlook on life, relationships, and resilience. For me, the event not only changed my priorities, but it also gave me a stronger feeling of empathy, purpose, and resolve.
When my parents were diagnosed with cancer, it felt like the ground beneath me had moved. The uncertainty was overpowering, and the emotions were raw—fear, rage, and despair, all braided together with optimism. Despite the commotion, I discovered a strength I didn't know I have. I took on roles I never anticipated myself doing at my age, such as assisting with caregiving, managing household responsibilities, or simply providing emotional support. This showed me the importance of being unselfish and resilient in the face of adversity.
Cancer has a way of reducing life to its essence. During the toughest days, I discovered what was actually important: family, love, and time. Small moments, such as sitting together during chemotherapy sessions or telling stories to distract from the agony, became very meaningful. These events reminded me of the beauty of human connection and the value of being present for others, no matter how difficult it may be.The encounter also increased my empathy. Seeing someone you care about suffer the physical and emotional consequences of cancer alters your perspective on the world. I grew more aware of the hardships of others, whether visible or hidden. I learned to listen without judgment and to be kind without expecting anything in return. This compassion has become an integral part of who I am and why I am pursuing a career in nursing. I want to be there for others when they are most vulnerable, just like nurses and caregivers were for my family.
Academically and professionally, the experience strengthened my resolve. Balancing school, employment, and caregiving was challenging, but it taught me how to prioritize, manage my time, and persist under pressure. These abilities are crucial, particularly in nursing, where critical thinking and adaptability are required. More importantly, I have a personal understanding of what patients and their families go through, which drives me to go above and beyond in giving treatment.
Perhaps the most important lesson I learnt was about hope. Cancer is unpredictable, and there were days when it seemed like hope was fading. Even in those moments, I witnessed the incredible power of hope, both in my parents' struggle and in the unwavering support of friends, family, and medical professionals. Hope kept us pushing on, and it still guides me now.
In many respects, my parents' cancer battle has shaped me into someone I am proud to be: resilient, sensitive, and purpose-driven. While it was a terrible chapter in my life, it also highlighted my inner strength and the significance of using that strength to positively touch the lives of others.

Redefining Victory Scholarship
Success, for me, is a combination of personal and professional growth, making a meaningful impact on others, and contributing positively to the community. It’s not just about reaching personal milestones but also about using those achievements to help others. As I pursue my career in nursing, I envision success as being able to provide compassionate, high-quality care to patients, advocate for healthcare equity, and continuously develop my skills to be the best nurse I can be.
In terms of educational success, my goal is to complete my nursing degree with a strong academic foundation. Nursing is a challenging field that requires both theoretical knowledge and hands-on experience. Success, in this context, means excelling in my coursework and clinical rotations, gaining the necessary experience to become a skilled and competent nurse. I aim to not only meet the academic requirements but also to go beyond them by learning as much as I can about the latest practices in healthcare, treatment options, and patient care. I see success as a commitment to continuous learning and professional development.
However, nursing is not just about what I learn in the classroom. Success also means being a source of comfort and support to my patients. As a nurse, I want to be known for my ability to provide compassionate care. Success in this regard means building trusting relationships with patients, listening to their concerns, and advocating for their needs. It’s not just about administering medication or performing tasks but also about offering emotional support during difficult moments. Making my patients feel heard and cared for is an essential part of the nursing profession, and this is where I believe true success lies.
Moreover, advocating for healthcare equity is central to my vision of success. I am passionate about ensuring that everyone, regardless of their background or financial situation, has access to quality healthcare. I recognize that many communities face barriers to care, and I want to use my role as a nurse to help break down these barriers. Whether through volunteering, community outreach, or advocating for policy changes, success for me means being part of the movement to make healthcare more accessible to underserved populations. I aim to educate patients about the resources available to them and ensure they receive the care they deserve.
Personal balance is another important aspect of my definition of success. Nursing school is rigorous, and the demands of the healthcare profession can be overwhelming. Success for me is also about maintaining a healthy work-life balance. This means taking care of my own physical and mental well-being, spending time with loved ones, and ensuring that I am grounded in my values. Maintaining balance allows me to be the best nurse I can be while also leading a fulfilling life outside of work.
This scholarship is essential in helping me achieve my vision of success. Nursing programs require a significant financial commitment, and this scholarship would alleviate some of the stress associated with tuition and expenses. Mental Health Profession Scholarship
Overcoming mental health challenges has been a journey for me, and I’m still actively working toward better managing my mental well-being. Like many others, I’ve faced periods of stress, anxiety, and self-doubt, especially as I balance the demands of school, work, and extracurricular activities. For a while, I struggled to acknowledge the impact that these mental health challenges had on my life, brushing them aside because I didn’t want to appear weak or burden others with my feelings. However, I’ve come to realize that mental health is just as important as physical health, and addressing it head-on is key to leading a balanced and fulfilling life.
One of the most important steps I’ve taken in overcoming my mental health challenges has been seeking support. Initially, I didn’t know where to turn for help, but I eventually confided in a trusted teacher and a few close friends. They not only listened without judgment but also encouraged me to speak with a counselor. Through therapy, I’ve learned coping techniques for managing anxiety, such as mindfulness, journaling, and breathing exercises. These tools have helped me develop a healthier mindset and better handle stress when it arises. I’ve also worked on challenging negative thoughts and reframing them in a more positive and constructive light. Therapy has been a crucial part of my journey, helping me build resilience and a better understanding of how to prioritize my mental health.
Another key part of my mental health journey has been setting boundaries and learning to say no. In the past, I would take on too many responsibilities, thinking I had to be perfect or constantly busy. I’ve realized that it’s okay to take breaks and that it’s important to be realistic about what I can handle. Whether it's taking time for self-care, participating in activities that bring me joy, or simply giving myself permission to rest, I’ve learned that balance is essential to maintaining both my physical and mental health.
Looking ahead, I want to help others who are going through similar challenges. Mental health awareness is something I’m passionate about, and I believe that reducing the stigma surrounding it is crucial for creating a supportive environment for everyone. Moving forward, I plan to actively speak out about mental health in my community—whether through peer support groups, awareness campaigns, or simply by being open about my own experiences. I hope that by sharing my story, others will feel empowered to seek the help they need and realize that they are not alone in their struggles.
One way I plan to support others is by volunteering with organizations that focus on mental health education and resources. I want to help provide the tools and support systems that individuals need to better manage their mental well-being, especially in underserved communities where access to mental health resources may be limited. I also hope to foster an environment where young people feel comfortable discussing their mental health without fear of judgment or shame, whether in school or through extracurricular activities. By raising awareness and making mental health a priority, we can encourage others to reach out for help and continue to normalize conversations about mental well-being.
In summary, overcoming mental health challenges is a continuous process, but by seeking help, learning to set boundaries, and practicing self-care, I’ve been able to make progress. Moving forward, I am committed to supporting others by raising awareness, providing resources, and fostering a culture of understanding around mental health. My goal is to create a space where individuals feel empowered to prioritize their mental health without fear of judgment.

I am passionate about pursuing a career in nursing because of my deep desire to make a meaningful difference in the lives of others. From a young age, I’ve always been drawn to helping people, whether it was through volunteering, offering support to friends and family, or simply lending a hand when needed. Nursing offers the perfect combination of personal fulfillment, intellectual challenge, and the opportunity to directly improve the health and well-being of individuals and communities.
One of the main reasons I am so passionate about nursing is the opportunity to work on the front lines of healthcare. As a nurse, I would be able to provide direct care to patients, advocate for their needs, and educate them on how to take better care of themselves. The idea of being part of a team that not only helps heal physical ailments but also offers emotional support to patients is incredibly meaningful to me. I believe that emotional and mental well-being are just as important as physical health, and nurses play a vital role in making patients feel heard, cared for, and supported during some of their most vulnerable moments.
Additionally, nursing offers a variety of paths and specialties, which is something that excites me. Whether I choose to work in pediatrics, emergency care, or even research, nursing allows for constant learning and growth. The field is dynamic, with ever-evolving medical technologies and treatment methods, and I am eager to be part of a profession that encourages continuous improvement and lifelong learning. The chance to continually enhance my skills and knowledge while providing patient care is incredibly motivating.
The impact of nursing on the broader community is another reason I’m drawn to this field. Nurses don’t just care for individuals; they also educate families and communities on how to prevent illness and maintain health. Nurses advocate for policies that improve healthcare systems and can play a pivotal role in addressing health disparities in underserved communities. I see nursing as a way to not only help individuals in need but also to contribute to positive change on a larger scale, whether that means working in public health initiatives, engaging in community outreach, or helping to bridge gaps in healthcare access.
Ultimately, my passion for nursing stems from my deep sense of empathy and commitment to service. I am excited about the opportunity to make a real difference in the lives of others, both on a personal and community level. Nursing is a career that allows me to combine my desire to help people with my interest in science, healthcare, and lifelong learning. It’s a profession where I can challenge myself, grow, and make a lasting impact in ways that matter most—by caring for others in their time of need.
Eco-Warrior Scholarship
Living sustainably has become an essential part of my daily life, as I recognize the impact that small actions can have on the environment and the planet's future. I make intentional choices that prioritize reducing waste, conserving energy, and supporting eco-friendly practices. These actions, though simple, contribute to a larger effort to lessen my carbon footprint, which is important not only for preserving natural resources but also for combating climate change and creating a more sustainable future for generations to come.
One of the most significant ways I live sustainably is by reducing my waste. I consciously avoid single-use plastics, choosing reusable alternatives instead, such as a stainless steel water bottle and cloth bags for shopping. By minimizing plastic consumption, I help reduce the pollution that harms ecosystems, particularly oceans, where plastic waste often accumulates. Additionally, I strive to purchase products with minimal or recyclable packaging, supporting companies that prioritize sustainability in their manufacturing processes. These choices are important because the production, disposal, and decomposition of plastic contribute significantly to carbon emissions and environmental degradation.
Another key aspect of my sustainable lifestyle is conserving energy. I make an effort to reduce electricity usage by turning off lights and unplugging appliances when not in use. I also avoid overusing heating and cooling systems, dressing in layers during cold weather and using fans instead of air conditioning during the summer. These small actions help reduce my energy consumption and, in turn, lessen the demand for fossil fuels, which are a major source of carbon emissions. Additionally, I’m mindful of water conservation, opting for shorter showers and fixing leaks promptly to prevent waste.
I also prioritize sustainable transportation options whenever possible. I walk, bike, or use public transportation for shorter trips instead of driving, which significantly reduces my carbon footprint. I am aware that transportation is one of the largest contributors to greenhouse gas emissions, and by choosing alternative methods of travel, I aim to minimize my contribution to air pollution and global warming. Additionally, when driving is necessary, I ensure my car is well-maintained to improve fuel efficiency.
Supporting sustainable food practices is another intentional choice I make. I try to incorporate more plant-based meals into my diet and reduce my consumption of meat, particularly red meat, which has a larger environmental impact due to the resources required for livestock farming. I also try to purchase locally grown, seasonal produce, which reduces the carbon emissions associated with the transportation of food over long distances. Supporting local farmers not only contributes to sustainable agriculture but also helps to strengthen my community's economy.
The importance of reducing my carbon footprint cannot be overstated. Climate change is one of the most pressing issues of our time, and every individual has a role to play in mitigating its effects. Reducing carbon emissions helps to slow the rise in global temperatures, which in turn helps reduce the severity of extreme weather events, preserve biodiversity, and protect ecosystems. By making sustainable choices, I contribute to a larger collective effort to reduce the harmful impacts of human activity on the environment and help create a more resilient and sustainable world for future generations.
In conclusion, my intentional choices to live sustainably—such as reducing waste, conserving energy, using sustainable transportation, and supporting eco-friendly food practices—are essential steps in reducing my carbon footprint. It’s important because the planet’s health is interconnected with our own, and the choices we make today will determine the quality of life for future generations. Small, consistent actions may seem insignificant on their own, but collectively, they have the power to create meaningful change.

Plato’s "The Republic"- "And if there were a contest and he had to compete in measuring the shadows with the other prisoners who had never moved from their places, while his sight was still weak and before his eyes had become steady, would he not be ridiculous? And would he not appear to have come from above as a fool, as someone who is incapable of judging what is real? His eyes would be painful, and it would be difficult for him to adjust to the light, and so, at first, he would try to avoid it and would prefer the darkness."
In this passage from Plato’s "The Republic," the philosopher presents an important metaphor for the human struggle to gain true knowledge, particularly in relation to enlightenment and understanding the nature of reality. The Allegory of the Cave explores the journey from ignorance to enlightenment, using the image of prisoners chained inside a dark cave, seeing only shadows cast on a wall. This specific passage illustrates the difficulty and resistance one may encounter when attempting to escape ignorance and approach truth.
At the heart of this allegory is the concept of reality as something far beyond mere appearances. The prisoners in the cave, who have only ever seen the shadows on the wall, represent people who live their lives in ignorance, perceiving the world through the narrow lens of what they know, which is distorted and incomplete. When one of the prisoners is freed and ascends out of the cave into the light of the sun, it represents the philosopher's journey toward knowledge and truth. However, as this passage emphasizes, the transition is far from easy.
The freed prisoner, at first, is blinded by the light of the sun, much as someone who is exposed to new knowledge might be disoriented or overwhelmed. The pain the freed prisoner feels upon seeing the light represents the discomfort and difficulty that often accompanies confronting the truth. It is much easier to remain in the dark, where the shadows of ignorance seem familiar and safe. For Plato, knowledge is not simply an intellectual exercise; it is an existential shift that requires adjustment, often involving discomfort and resistance. Just as the freed prisoner prefers the darkness of the cave to the brightness of the sun, individuals who have been conditioned to live in ignorance may resist new ideas or insights because they challenge the stability and security of their existing beliefs.
In this context, Plato is speaking to the human condition. We, as individuals, are often blind to the full scope of truth and reality. We may be limited by our past experiences, societal influences, or preconceived notions. These influences shape our understanding of the world and can trap us in patterns of ignorance. Like the prisoner, we may resist learning new things that challenge our current worldview, simply because it feels painful or threatening. Our attachment to our current understanding can prevent us from embracing a greater reality, just as the freed prisoner initially resists the sun’s light because it disrupts his sense of self.
This passage also reflects Plato’s view on education and the role of philosophers in society. The philosopher is the one who has seen the light of truth and is able to perceive reality more clearly. However, this journey is not only intellectual; it is deeply personal. It requires sacrifice, effort, and patience. Just as the freed prisoner’s eyes gradually adjust to the light of the sun, so too must the individual slowly come to terms with greater truths. Plato’s philosophy of education, therefore, is not about mere rote learning but about a transformation of the soul. True education leads the individual toward an understanding of the highest truths, and this journey is fraught with difficulties, misunderstandings, and initial rejection.
In a broader sense, this allegory can be applied to the philosophical quest for truth. Plato suggests that the truth is not readily accessible; it requires an arduous journey of questioning and critical thinking. The shadows on the wall symbolize the distorted perceptions people have of the world, influenced by external factors like social norms or biases. The freed prisoner, emerging from the cave, represents the philosopher or truth-seeker who, through reason and self-reflection, emerges from ignorance to knowledge. However, the journey does not end with enlightenment. In fact, Plato suggests, it becomes the philosopher’s duty to return to the cave—to share the knowledge they have gained with others who are still trapped in their ignorance.
The allegory serves as a cautionary tale about the difficulty of self-transformation. Many individuals prefer the comfort of the cave, even if they are aware of its limitations, because the outside world is daunting and unknown. The freed prisoner’s difficulty adjusting to the sunlight symbolizes the inner resistance we often face when we are challenged by truths that force us to reevaluate our lives or beliefs. The process of enlightenment, therefore, is not a smooth or linear one; it is a struggle against the darkness of ignorance and the discomfort of new understanding.
Moreover, Plato’s allegory speaks to societal forces that may contribute to the perpetuation of ignorance. The other prisoners in the cave represent society at large, which is often content to accept half-truths or superficial knowledge. These prisoners are content with their shadows, which serve as comforting illusions of reality. Plato’s view of society suggests that collective ignorance is widespread, and individuals who seek to challenge the status quo or question conventional wisdom are often met with ridicule or scorn. The freed prisoner, returning to the cave, is seen as foolish, just as individuals who attempt to expose uncomfortable truths in society may be dismissed or silenced.
Finally, Plato’s Allegory of the Cave raises profound questions about the nature of perception, knowledge, and reality. In a world filled with conflicting ideas, media manipulation, and political agendas, the allegory serves as a powerful reminder that what we perceive may not necessarily reflect the truth. The shadows on the wall, which the prisoners mistake for reality, represent the false narratives we often accept without critical examination. Plato urges us to be skeptical of our senses and to question the information we are given, urging us to seek a deeper, truer understanding of the world around us.
In conclusion, Plato’s passage from "The Republic" delves into the complexities of human perception and the challenging journey of intellectual and personal growth. The freed prisoner’s struggle to adjust to the light symbolizes the difficulty of accepting new truths, especially when they challenge our comfortable assumptions. This allegory emphasizes that enlightenment is not a simple process; it requires effort, discomfort, and a willingness to question long-held beliefs. It also serves as a powerful critique of societal norms and the resistance individuals may face when attempting to break free from ignorance. Ultimately, Plato’s message is clear: the pursuit of knowledge is difficult, but it is essential for personal and societal progress. True wisdom requires us to move beyond the shadows and into the light, no matter how painful or unsettling that journey may be.
Joshua’s Home Remodeling Scholarship
I possess a combination of skills that will help me succeed in the landscape industry, particularly in landscape design and architecture, where creativity, problem-solving, and an understanding of sustainability are key. My passion for nature and design, coupled with my strengths in organization, teamwork, and technical skills, make this field a natural fit for me.
First, my creative skills are a crucial asset for landscape design. Throughout high school, I have enjoyed art, design, and spatial planning. I have a strong sense of aesthetics and an ability to think visually, which allows me to envision how outdoor spaces can be transformed. Whether it's through drawing, sketching, or using design software, I’ve developed a keen eye for layout, proportion, and harmony, which are essential when designing outdoor spaces that are both beautiful and functional.
Additionally, my ability to problem-solve and think critically will help me navigate the challenges of landscape design. Landscape architecture requires finding solutions to complex environmental and spatial issues, such as how to manage stormwater runoff, use sustainable materials, or create inclusive, accessible spaces. I enjoy finding creative solutions to these kinds of challenges and working through the technical aspects of design. My background in science and my growing interest in environmental sustainability will enable me to approach these challenges with an analytical mindset and a focus on eco-friendly solutions.
Organization and project management are also strengths of mine. As a high school senior balancing schoolwork, a part-time job, extracurriculars, and family responsibilities, I’ve developed strong time management skills and the ability to stay organized under pressure. In the landscape industry, these skills are vital for managing multiple projects, meeting deadlines, and coordinating with clients, contractors, and other professionals. I am confident that these organizational skills will allow me to effectively manage large-scale landscape projects and ensure that they are completed on time and within budget.

I am driven by the belief that well-designed outdoor spaces can enhance human experiences and make a positive impact on the environment. By focusing on eco-friendly practices and embracing new technologies, I hope to be part of a new generation of landscape professionals who are dedicated to making a difference in both the built and natural environments.
Maggie's Way- International Woman’s Scholarship
I find that I can relate to Malgorzata “Maggie” Kwiecien’s challenges in many ways, particularly in her determination, resilience, and her willingness to embrace both intellectual and physical challenges. Maggie’s journey, from moving to the U.S. in 2015 without a support system to excelling in her career and tackling difficult physical pursuits, mirrors the challenges I face as a high school senior preparing to transition into college and adulthood. Like Maggie, I believe that embracing challenges is a way to grow and build strength, whether those challenges are academic, personal, or physical.
One of the most striking aspects of Maggie’s story is her courage in leaving her home country, Poland, and starting fresh in the U.S. without a support system. This resonates with me because, as I prepare to leave for college, I face the challenge of entering an unfamiliar environment where I won’t have my usual network of family and friends to rely on. I admire how Maggie took that bold step, facing the unknown with confidence and determination. It reminds me that personal growth often comes from stepping out of my comfort zone and embracing the unknown. While the circumstances are different, I find myself in a similar position—facing a new chapter in life where I must rely on my own strengths and abilities to adapt to new situations and overcome obstacles.
Maggie’s intellectual boldness also deeply resonates with me. She was always eager to learn and determined to master whatever she set her mind to, whether it was her career in engineering or other areas of interest. I identify with her passion for knowledge and constant desire to improve. Throughout my academic career, I’ve sought out opportunities to challenge myself and expand my understanding of different subjects, just as Maggie did in her field. I believe that intellectual curiosity is a powerful tool for personal growth, and like Maggie, I strive to be a lifelong learner, constantly seeking to deepen my understanding and apply that knowledge to make a difference in the world.
In addition to her intellectual pursuits, Maggie’s dedication to physical challenges is something I admire and relate to. She was an avid skier, mountain climber, cyclist, and diver, always willing to push herself physically and take on new adventures. As the captain of my school’s cheerleading team, I understand the importance of physical endurance, teamwork, and perseverance. I also know that physical challenges can build resilience and confidence, much like Maggie’s experience in tackling activities that tested her physical limits. Her ability to take on these challenges head-on, without fear, is a reminder to me that resilience is not just mental but also physical. I’m inspired by her willingness to embrace discomfort and push herself to her limits, and it encourages me to do the same in my own physical pursuits.
Finally, Maggie’s story of courage, intellectual pursuit, and physical determination has shaped the way I view my own challenges. Whether it’s navigating the transition to college, striving for excellence in my academics and extracurriculars, or pushing myself physically in cheerleading, I look to Maggie as an example of how to face adversity with strength and perseverance. Like her, I am determined to take on challenges with an open mind, a strong work ethic, and the belief that each experience, no matter how difficult, is an opportunity to grow and make a difference.
Women in STEM Scholarship
I have chosen to pursue a career in STEM because of my passion for problem-solving, my curiosity about how things work, and my desire to make a meaningful impact on the world. Mental Health Scholarship for Women
Mental health significantly impacts both my academic performance and personal life, especially as a high school senior managing multiple responsibilities. Balancing schoolwork, extracurricular activities, a part-time job, and family obligations often creates stress and anxiety, which can overwhelm me and affect my ability to succeed. When my mental health is struggling, it becomes harder to focus on my schoolwork, maintain relationships, or manage my time effectively. However, when I prioritize my mental health, I can better manage stress, stay organized, and perform at my best.
Academically, my mental health affects my concentration and ability to retain information. During stressful times, anxiety or a feeling of being overwhelmed makes it difficult to focus during class or study sessions. This lack of focus often leads to procrastination, and when combined with physical symptoms like headaches or poor sleep, it can affect my productivity and performance. When stress is high, deadlines seem more intimidating, and I can feel like I’m constantly playing catch-up. This cycle of worry can lower my motivation, further hindering my academic progress.
On a personal level, my mental health affects my relationships. When I’m overwhelmed or stressed, I tend to withdraw, either because I don’t have the energy to socialize or because I’m consumed with school or work. This can cause friction in my relationships, leading to feelings of isolation and frustration. Burnout also makes it difficult to enjoy activities that usually help me unwind, like spending time with friends or engaging in hobbies, leaving me feeling drained and disconnected.
Recognizing the impact of my mental health, I’ve made efforts to prioritize my well-being. One of the most important changes I’ve made is establishing a daily routine that includes time for self-care, physical activity, and breaks. I’ve found that even a short walk or simple stretches can significantly reduce stress and improve my mood. I also try to eat well and get enough sleep, as I know these habits are fundamental to both my physical and mental health.
In addition to these habits, I’ve learned to ask for help when I need it. Whether it’s reaching out to a teacher for clarification on an assignment or confiding in a friend or family member about how I’m feeling, seeking support is an important step in maintaining my mental health. I also practice mindfulness techniques, like deep breathing or journaling, to help clear my mind and refocus when I feel overwhelmed. These small moments of reflection allow me to gain perspective and manage anxiety.
Another strategy I use is setting realistic expectations for myself. I’ve come to understand that I can’t do everything perfectly and that it’s okay to ask for help or take a break when needed. This mindset has helped me avoid burnout and better manage stress. I also make time for activities that bring me joy, such as spending time with loved ones or pursuing creative hobbies, as these activities recharge me and help me stay balanced.
In conclusion, my mental health plays a significant role in both my academic success and personal well-being. By adopting healthy habits, seeking support when necessary, practicing mindfulness, and setting realistic goals, I am able to manage the challenges I face and maintain a sense of balance. Prioritizing my mental health not only improves my performance in school but also allows me to nurture meaningful relationships and enjoy a more fulfilling life.
Black Leaders Scholarship
I want to reflect on a leader who has deeply inspired me—my grandmother. As a Black woman who grew up during the segregation era, my grandmother’s life and achievements have shaped my understanding of resilience, strength, and the importance of community. Though she was not a public figure in the traditional sense, her impact on me and our community is undeniable. Her ability to overcome adversity while maintaining an unwavering sense of dignity and love for others has inspired me to push through challenges and work toward making a difference in the world.
My grandmother was born in the 1930s, a time when segregation and racial inequality were rampant in the United States. Despite the systemic barriers she faced, she excelled in her education and became a dedicated teacher. I admire how she navigated these difficult circumstances with grace. Education was a powerful tool for her, not just as a career but as a means of empowerment. She firmly believed that knowledge was the key to unlocking opportunities and breaking the cycle of oppression. It’s a belief I carry with me as I continue my own education. Her life was a testament to the power of perseverance, especially as a Black woman striving to achieve greatness in a society that often overlooked her potential.
What made her even more extraordinary was the way she used her position to uplift others. She was deeply involved in her church and local community. Whether organizing events, offering support to those in need, or simply being a listening ear, my grandmother constantly reminded me of the importance of giving back. She often said, “You don’t have to be famous to make a difference; every little action counts.” I have taken this advice to heart and strive to make a positive impact wherever I can, whether through volunteering, mentoring, or simply being a source of support for others.
One of the most significant ways my grandmother impacted my life was through her teachings about self-worth and pride in our heritage. Growing up, she made sure I knew the stories of Black leaders who fought for freedom and equality, from figures like Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Rosa Parks to everyday people who had faced their own struggles and victories. She taught me that our history is rich with resilience and brilliance, and that understanding where we come from is crucial to knowing our value. Her influence helped me develop a strong sense of identity as a Black person, proud of both my heritage and my place in the world.
Her impact was also deeply felt within our family. She raised her children with the understanding that they were capable of achieving greatness, and she passed on these values to her grandchildren. My grandmother was a constant source of inspiration, always pushing us to pursue education, to strive for excellence, and to stay true to who we are. Her leadership was never about titles or recognition; it was about the way she lived her life—her commitment to love, community, and the belief that, no matter the obstacles, we could succeed if we remained determined and kind-hearted.
As I continue my journey through high school and prepare for college, I carry my grandmother’s legacy with me. She taught me that leadership is not only about what you accomplish but also about how you inspire and empower those around you. Her resilience in the face of adversity, her commitment to education, and her devotion to community continue to motivate me to be a better person and to work toward positive change.
Healing Self and Community Scholarship
To make mental health care more affordable and accessible, I would contribute by creating a comprehensive digital platform that combines technology, community support, and partnerships with healthcare providers. The platform would offer free or low-cost mental health resources, such as online therapy, self-help tools, and virtual support groups. For those needing personalized care, affordable sessions with licensed therapists would be available through video calls or messaging. By using a tiered approach, people could access immediate support while those requiring more intensive care could connect with professionals at a reduced cost.
In addition to the digital platform, I would advocate for community-based initiatives like peer support programs in schools, workplaces, and local centers. Training individuals in “Mental Health First Aid” would help create networks of support, empowering communities to provide initial care and reduce stigma.
I would also push for policy changes that ensure mental health care is covered by health insurance at the same level as physical health care. By advocating for sliding-scale fees and expanding public health programs, I would work to make counseling services available to those with limited financial resources.
Through these combined efforts, I aim to remove barriers to mental health care and create an environment where everyone has access to the support they need for their well-being.
Hampton Roads Unity "Be a Pillar" Scholarship
A moment that significantly impacted me and shaped my view on activism occurred during my time as a cheerleading captain. One of my teammates, who is part of the LGBTQIA+ community, came out to the team, and it became a pivotal experience in my life. At first, I didn’t realize the weight of the situation or how deeply it affected my teammate, but as I witnessed the courage it took for them to share their true identity with us, I began to understand the importance of creating an environment that is inclusive, supportive, and respectful of all people, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity.
At the time, I wasn’t entirely familiar with the challenges faced by the LGBTQIA+ community, but this experience opened my eyes to the difficulties my teammate had endured. They shared with me how they had faced discrimination and a lack of acceptance in the past, which had made them hesitant to express their true self. However, through our team’s support, they found the courage to be open, and it became a defining moment for both of us. I realized that being an ally wasn’t just about offering support but about actively promoting equality and creating spaces where everyone feels safe and valued.
This experience deeply impacted me and has shaped my perspective on activism. I realized that silence and indifference are not options when it comes to standing up for the rights and dignity of others. It motivated me to learn more about the LGBTQIA+ community, the challenges they face, and the importance of advocating for equal rights. I started to educate myself on the history of LGBTQIA+ rights, the struggles for equality, and how intersectionality plays a significant role in shaping the experiences of LGBTQIA+ individuals.
It also made me reflect on how important it is to create supportive environments in all areas of life—whether in school, at work, or in social circles—where people can be themselves without fear of judgment or exclusion. As a leader in my cheerleading team, I took it upon myself to foster an inclusive and accepting space for everyone, regardless of their identity. This meant speaking up against any form of discrimination, being more conscious of language and behavior, and encouraging open conversations about identity, equality, and respect.
This experience has shaped my plans for future activism in several ways. I am now determined to continue advocating for the LGBTQIA+ community, both on a personal level and through larger platforms. As I move into higher education and beyond, I plan to get involved in campus organizations that support LGBTQIA+ rights, as well as attend rallies, workshops, and events focused on inclusivity and social justice. I also want to help amplify the voices of those who may not have the opportunity to speak out for themselves and work towards ensuring that LGBTQIA+ individuals feel supported and valued in every community.
In summary, my experience with my teammate in the LGBTQIA+ community taught me the importance of being an active ally and advocate for equality. It opened my eyes to the challenges faced by LGBTQIA+ individuals and solidified my commitment to creating safe, inclusive spaces for everyone. As I continue my journey, I am passionate about using my voice and actions to promote equality and support the LGBTQIA+ community, fostering a culture of respect, love, and acceptance.

I believe that these values will be essential as I move forward in my career. Whether I pursue business, healthcare, or communications, these core principles will help me build strong relationships, make ethical decisions, and contribute positively to the work environment.
I also believe that my faith will guide me when I face the inevitable challenges and setbacks in my career. Life isn’t always easy, and I know that my journey will come with obstacles. But having faith will remind me to remain hopeful and patient, trusting that God’s timing is always right. When I face difficulties in my career or personal life, I will lean on the strength that comes from knowing I am part of a bigger plan and that I am never facing challenges alone. Prayer, reflection, and scripture will continue to be a source of guidance, helping me make thoughtful decisions and stay grounded in my faith, regardless of the circumstances.
In the long term, my faith will also shape the way I view success. I believe that success isn’t just about personal achievement but about using my talents and resources to serve others. I want my career to be one where I can make a positive impact, whether through direct service, leadership, or mentorship. My faith encourages me to live a life of purpose, where I not only seek personal fulfillment but also seek to help others along the way.
In summary, my faith in God has given me the strength, guidance, and values necessary to navigate life’s challenges. As I pursue my education and career, I am confident that my faith will continue to support me, providing clarity and resilience when facing difficulties. It will help me maintain a strong moral compass and guide my decisions as I strive to make a meaningful impact in my career and in the lives of those I encounter.
Joe Gilroy "Plan Your Work, Work Your Plan" Scholarship
As I approach the end of high school, I am focused on my goals for the next few years, particularly in higher education and career development. My primary goal is to attend college, earn a degree, and successfully transition into a career that excites me. Achieving this requires careful planning and balancing my academic, personal, and financial priorities. In this essay, I will outline the goals I’ve set for myself and the steps I plan to take to reach them.
The first goal I’ve set is to successfully attend and graduate from college. I plan to major in a field related to business, communications, or healthcare, but I intend to remain flexible and explore different areas of study during my first year. My academic goal is to maintain a GPA of 3.5 or higher throughout college, ensuring I stay eligible for scholarships and internships. To do this, I will focus on staying organized, attending all classes, participating in study groups, and utilizing academic resources such as tutoring centers and online platforms like Khan Academy.
To achieve this goal, I will need several resources. My high school education has laid a strong foundation, and extracurricular activities like cheerleading have equipped me with leadership and time management skills. Financially, I plan to apply for scholarships, financial aid, and grants to cover tuition and fees. I will also explore work-study programs and part-time jobs to help offset living expenses. I estimate a budget of $1,000 for books, supplies, and technology like a laptop. Housing and meal plans will cost an additional $10,000 to $15,000 annually, depending on the college. I plan to complete my college applications during my senior year and ensure I meet all deadlines, allowing me to secure housing and finalize my course schedule in time for my first semester.
Another key goal is to begin building my career foundation while in college. I plan to gain work experience through internships, part-time jobs, and networking opportunities. I will attend career fairs, connect with alumni, and utilize online platforms like LinkedIn to find internships in my field of interest. By working during the summers and part-time throughout the school year, I will gain hands-on experience that will prepare me for a full-time job post-graduation. I will also seek guidance from my college’s career center to help with resume building, interview preparation, and job placement.
For these career goals, I will budget for transportation, professional attire, and internship-related expenses. I anticipate spending $1,000 to $2,000 annually on these items, and I may also invest in professional development courses or certifications, which could cost an additional $500 to $1,000 per year.
Lastly, I recognize that my health and well-being are vital for success. I plan to maintain physical activity through cheerleading and regular exercise. I will also prioritize my mental health by using campus counseling services and practicing stress management techniques. My time management skills, honed through balancing school and extracurriculars, will help me avoid burnout.
In conclusion, my goals are to succeed academically, build a career foundation, and prioritize my well-being throughout my college years. By staying focused, using available resources, and managing my budget carefully, I’m confident I can achieve these objectives. My plan is flexible enough to adapt to any changes, ensuring I remain on track for success.

Throughout my life, challenges have been a constant, shaping me into a person who thrives on perseverance and determination. From juggling schoolwork and extracurriculars to taking on family responsibilities and work commitments, these experiences have driven me to pursue higher education with a purpose.
As a high school senior, I’ve carried many responsibilities, balancing academics, cheerleading, work, and family obligations. These roles haven’t always been easy, but each one has taught me something valuable about resilience and self-motivation. One of the most defining moments came when I was named captain of my cheerleading team. While it was an honor, it also came with immense pressure. Being a captain meant more than leading chants or executing stunts; it meant serving as a role model, resolving conflicts, and pushing my team to excel—even when I was battling my own self-doubt. That responsibility demanded time, focus, and a deep commitment to teamwork, all while managing the other aspects of my busy life.
At the same time, I worked a full-time job, not just for personal goals but to help my family. There were moments when I felt stretched thin—running from cheer practice to work, coming home late, and then staying up to finish homework. These experiences taught me how to manage my time effectively and prioritize what truly matters. I learned that success isn’t about perfection; it’s about persistence. Even when I felt overwhelmed, I found a way forward, and that grit is what I carry into every challenge I face.
In addition to these responsibilities, I’ve been inspired by the support I received through my school’s Special Education program. My journey hasn’t been one of a traditional Special Education student, but it’s been shaped by incredible teachers and mentors who believed in my potential. One teacher, in particular, Ms. Robinson, had a profound impact on me. She taught me during a critical time when I doubted my ability to succeed academically. Her encouragement wasn’t just about academics; it was about recognizing my unique strengths and teaching me how to harness them.
Ms. Robinson often said, “Your challenges don’t define you, but your response to them does.” She made me believe that I could set goals and achieve them, even when the odds weren’t in my favor. Whether it was breaking down complex concepts in ways that made them click or offering a listening ear on tough days, her support reminded me that education isn’t about how fast you learn—it’s about your commitment to growth. Her belief in me ignited a belief in myself, and it’s a lesson I hold onto as I prepare for the next chapter of my life.
These experiences have not only shaped me but have also inspired my vision for the future. As someone who understands the challenges that come with balancing multiple roles, I am passionate about helping others find their strength, too. This has influenced my interest in studying psychology or education, where I can work to support students like me—those who face adversity but refuse to let it define them. Higher education is more than a step toward personal achievement; it’s a path toward creating change for others.
What motivates me most is the knowledge that I’ve already overcome so much. Juggling school, cheerleading, work, and family taught me resilience. The encouragement of educators like Ms. Robinson taught me to trust my capabilities. Together, these experiences have built a foundation of strength, preparing me for the challenges that college and life may bring. I’ve learned to embrace difficulty as an opportunity for growth rather than an obstacle.
As I look ahead, I know that college won’t be easy. But I also know that I am prepared to face whatever comes my way. My challenges have taught me to persevere, my mentors have shown me the power of encouragement, and my own determination has proved that I can achieve what I set my mind to. These lessons drive me to pursue higher education, not just for myself, but for the opportunities it will allow me to create for others.

Growing up, I was raised in a household where financial stability was not always guaranteed. My family has always worked hard to make ends meet, but there were times when we struggled to cover basic needs. My mother, in particular, has been a huge source of strength for me. Despite the challenges we faced, she always emphasized the importance of education and encouraged me to pursue my goals, no matter how difficult things seemed. She showed me what resilience looks like — working multiple jobs, managing household responsibilities, and constantly looking for ways to support our family. This experience taught me how to persevere in the face of adversity and helped shape my determination to succeed.
Financial stress was often a constant source of worry growing up. There were times when I had to balance schoolwork with a job to help contribute, which sometimes felt overwhelming. It was hard to focus on my studies when I was worried about bills being paid or helping out with groceries. But through it all, my mom instilled in me the importance of staying focused on long-term goals, even when immediate circumstances felt discouraging. I learned to manage my time effectively, push through challenging moments, and keep working toward my dreams, despite the obstacles.
These experiences have played a significant role in shaping my passion for STEM. I've always been fascinated by how things work, especially in areas related to science and technology. I find joy in solving problems and learning about how advancements in these fields can change lives. However, it wasn't until I realized how STEM could be a pathway to financial stability and a way to give back to my community that I truly became passionate about it. My interest lies in how technology can solve real-world problems, especially in underrepresented communities like mine, where access to resources is limited. For example, I am particularly drawn to healthcare technology, where innovations can directly impact people’s well-being. Whether it's through improving access to medical care or creating more affordable solutions for those in need, I see immense potential for STEM to break down barriers.
I want to be part of a generation that uses STEM not just for personal gain, but to create tangible, positive change in the world. One of the biggest impacts I hope to make is in improving access to quality healthcare and education through technological solutions. My goal is to work in a field where I can develop and implement technologies that help communities that are often overlooked, particularly those in low-income areas. I believe that through STEM, I can help bridge the gap between those who have access to resources and those who don’t, making a real difference in the lives of people who may not otherwise have the opportunity to benefit from such advancements.
Through my work, I hope to show others from similar backgrounds that STEM is not only a field they can succeed in but also one where they can make a difference. Overcoming financial hardship has fueled my desire to help others who are struggling in the same way I did. I am passionate about creating opportunities for people from all walks of life to access the same kinds of innovations and advancements that can truly change their lives, just as they’ve changed mine.
In addition to my interest in healthcare technology, I am also passionate about environmental science and how technology can be used to address issues like climate change and resource scarcity. Growing up in a community where environmental factors often impacted people’s health and daily lives, I saw firsthand how these challenges affected low-income families. I became determined to pursue a path where I could combine my skills in STEM with a focus on sustainability and environmental justice. Whether it’s through developing renewable energy solutions or creating technologies that promote environmental conservation, I want to use my knowledge to improve the quality of life for underserved communities. Through STEM, I believe we have the power to not only preserve the planet but also empower the people who are most vulnerable to its effects.
In the future, I envision myself using my STEM education to become a leader in creating accessible, innovative solutions that address both health and environmental challenges. My ultimate goal is to work with organizations, startups, or research institutions that prioritize social impact, using technology to level the playing field and create opportunities for those who are often left behind. The adversity I’ve faced has only strengthened my resolve to pursue this mission, and I am more committed than ever to using my skills and knowledge to make a difference. I believe that through perseverance, innovation, and a deep passion for helping others, I can contribute to a future where technology serves as a force for good, creating lasting change for individuals and communities across the world.

The greatest driving force in my life has been my family, particularly my mother. From a young age, I witnessed her resilience, hard work, and selflessness. She has always put our family first, making countless sacrifices to ensure that my siblings and I had what we needed to succeed. Her determination to create a better future for us, despite the challenges she faced, has inspired me to push forward in my own life.
My mom's unwavering support has been my foundation. She taught me the importance of working hard and never giving up, even when things get tough. Her example has shaped the way I approach my own responsibilities, whether it’s balancing schoolwork, extracurricular activities, or my job. I’ve seen her juggle multiple roles, from being a provider to being our emotional support system, and that level of dedication has always motivated me to keep going, even when I feel overwhelmed.
But beyond her work ethic, what truly drives me is the way my mom has always encouraged me to pursue my dreams and believe in myself. She’s always told me that I am capable of more than I think and that no obstacle is too great to overcome. Her belief in me has given me the confidence to strive for my goals, whether it’s becoming cheer captain, pursuing higher education, or helping others. Even when I doubt myself, I remember her words and feel that strength to keep going.
What makes my mom’s influence even more powerful is that she’s not just an example of hard work and resilience, but of love and compassion. She taught me the importance of helping others and being there for the people in my life. I’ve seen her go out of her way to lend a hand, whether it’s for a friend, a neighbor, or a family member, and that has deeply impacted how I interact with the world. Her kindness and generosity have shown me that success is not just about achieving personal goals but also about lifting others up along the way.
In addition to my mom, my friends, teammates, and mentors have also played key roles in shaping who I am today. They’ve supported me, pushed me to be better, and shown me the power of community. But it’s my mom’s example and love that have been the ultimate driving force, guiding me through my challenges and inspiring me to work hard, stay compassionate, and always believe in myself. Because of her, I am determined to create a future where I can make a positive impact on others and continue the cycle of support and love that she has always given me.
Fernandez Scholarship
I have always been driven by the desire to help others and create positive change in the world. As I transition from high school to college, my aspirations are becoming clearer. I want to pursue a career that allows me to blend my passion for people with my academic strengths, ideally in a field like social work, psychology, or public health. These areas provide opportunities to directly impact lives by offering support, resources, and education to individuals and communities in need.
One of my primary goals is to work in mental health or social services, helping individuals navigate challenges like trauma, mental illness, and systemic barriers. Throughout high school, I’ve seen the power of emotional support in my own life and among my friends. Whether it’s through listening, offering guidance, or just being there for someone, I’ve learned that people need not only physical help but also emotional and psychological support to thrive. My passion for helping people has only grown stronger as I’ve watched those around me struggle, often silently, with issues like anxiety, depression, and the pressures of school and life. I want to become someone who can help others through those tough times.
By pursuing a career in social work or psychology, I hope to give individuals the tools they need to overcome their obstacles and live healthier, more fulfilled lives. I am particularly drawn to working with young people, as I understand how challenging these years can be. Helping teenagers navigate the pressures of high school, social media, family expectations, and future career choices is something I feel passionate about. These struggles are universal, yet many young people lack the support systems needed to cope in healthy ways. I want to be the person they can turn to for advice, encouragement, or simply to talk things through.
Moreover, I believe my experiences as a cheer captain and working full-time have taught me leadership, empathy, and how to be an advocate for others. As a cheer captain, I’ve learned to support my teammates through both successes and failures, encouraging them to keep pushing forward. I’ve learned the importance of being a role model and making sure others feel valued and heard. These lessons have equipped me with the skills to be a compassionate leader, and I want to carry these traits into my future career.
In addition to one-on-one support, I believe in the power of community-wide change. This is why I’m also interested in working on policies and programs that support mental health on a larger scale. I’ve seen firsthand how gaps in resources can prevent people from getting the help they need. By working with organizations or government programs that advocate for mental health awareness and support, I hope to influence public policy and promote systemic change.
Ultimately, my goal is to make a lasting impact by helping people feel seen, understood, and empowered. I want to contribute to a world where mental health is prioritized, where individuals feel comfortable seeking help, and where communities have the resources and education they need to support their members. Whether through direct service, advocacy, or policy change, I believe my work will make a difference by improving people’s lives and fostering a more compassionate society. Through my career, I hope to be part of the solution that helps others overcome adversity, grow stronger, and live happier, healthier lives.
Strength in Neurodiversity Scholarship
My experience as a neurodiverse student has been a journey of self-discovery, resilience, and growth. Being neurodiverse means seeing the world through a unique lens, which has shaped not only how I learn but also how I approach challenges, relationships, and my aspirations. While there have been moments of difficulty, my neurodiversity has given me strengths that I believe will be invaluable in college and in my future career in healthcare.
As a neurodiverse student, I’ve had to navigate an educational system that doesn’t always accommodate different ways of thinking. Traditional learning environments, with their rigid structures and expectations, sometimes felt overwhelming or frustrating. Tasks like time management, navigating social norms, or processing information in specific formats required extra effort. But these challenges taught me perseverance and problem-solving. Rather than giving up, I learned to advocate for myself, develop strategies to stay organized, and find alternative ways to grasp complex concepts. These skills have not only helped me succeed academically but have also prepared me to tackle the challenges of college and beyond.
One of my greatest neurodiverse strengths is my ability to think creatively and approach problems from unique angles. This has been especially valuable in science and mathematics, where I can identify patterns and solutions that others might overlook. My creativity also extends to my interpersonal skills. As cheer captain, I’ve often used my perspective to build a cohesive team, finding innovative ways to motivate my peers and resolve conflicts. These abilities will serve me well in college, where collaboration and innovation are essential, and in my future career in healthcare, where problem-solving and empathy are critical.
Another strength of mine is hyperfocus, which allows me to dive deeply into subjects that interest me. When I’m passionate about something, whether it’s learning about human anatomy or understanding public health disparities, I give it my all. This ability to immerse myself in topics will help me excel in rigorous college courses and develop the expertise needed to succeed in my career. My determination to master subjects I’m passionate about is not just an academic skill—it reflects my dedication to making a meaningful impact in the world.
In addition to academic strengths, my neurodiverse experience has shaped my empathy and understanding of others. I know what it feels like to navigate systems that don’t always fit, and this has made me more attuned to the struggles of others. In healthcare, this empathy will enable me to connect with patients on a deeper level, particularly those who feel marginalized or misunderstood. I plan to use my unique perspective to advocate for inclusive practices, ensuring that everyone—regardless of background or ability—receives compassionate and equitable care.
While being neurodiverse has presented challenges, it has also equipped me with resilience, adaptability, and a deep sense of purpose. These qualities will not only help me succeed in college but also enable me to contribute meaningfully to my field and community. By embracing my neurodiverse strengths, I am confident in my ability to thrive and make a lasting impact as a healthcare professional dedicated to improving lives.
John J Costonis Scholarship
My ultimate goal is to become a healthcare professional who makes a meaningful impact on individuals and communities. Specifically, I aspire to become a physician or nurse practitioner, focusing on providing compassionate care and addressing disparities in healthcare access. I want to be a leader in creating equitable solutions for underserved populations, ensuring that everyone, regardless of their background, has access to quality care. Achieving this goal requires dedication, resilience, and a long-term commitment to learning and growth, and I have already begun taking steps to turn my dreams into reality.
One of the most significant steps I’ve taken toward my goals is maintaining a strong academic record while balancing multiple responsibilities. As a high school senior, I manage academics alongside being a cheer captain, working a full-time job, and helping my family with household responsibilities. This experience has taught me how to prioritize, stay disciplined, and remain focused under pressure. It has also deepened my appreciation for hard work, a value I carry into everything I do. Additionally, I have taken advanced courses in science and mathematics, preparing myself for the rigorous demands of college and a future in healthcare.
Outside of academics, I have sought opportunities to develop the skills and qualities essential for a career in healthcare. Through my leadership role as cheer captain, I’ve learned how to guide a team, communicate effectively, and handle challenging situations with composure. These experiences have strengthened my ability to lead and collaborate, which are critical in the medical field. My full-time job has taught me the importance of empathy and professionalism, especially when interacting with people from diverse backgrounds. These skills will serve me well as I work toward my goal of becoming a healthcare provider who is not only skilled but also compassionate and culturally aware.
While I am committed to pursuing my goals, I recognize that the journey will not be without its challenges. One of the most significant hardships I anticipate during college is managing the financial burden of higher education. As someone who works to contribute to my family’s income, I understand the weight of financial responsibilities. Balancing the cost of tuition, textbooks, and living expenses with academic success will require careful planning and sacrifice. This is why scholarships and financial aid are so critical to my ability to focus on my studies without the constant stress of financial instability.
Another challenge I have faced and will likely continue to face is balancing multiple responsibilities. As someone who has always juggled academics, extracurriculars, and work, I know the importance of time management. However, the increased demands of college will likely push me to refine these skills further. I am prepared to meet this challenge by staying organized, seeking support from mentors and peers, and remaining disciplined in my efforts to achieve both short-term and long-term goals.
Despite these hardships, I am driven by my passion for serving others and my vision for a better future. I am determined to overcome any obstacles that come my way, knowing that the challenges I face today will only make me stronger and more capable. By staying focused, working hard, and maintaining a sense of purpose, I am confident in my ability to achieve my goals and make a lasting impact as a healthcare professional.
Black Excellence Scholarship
Of the eight attributes of Black Excellence, prioritizing and managing time is the area where I see the greatest opportunity for growth. Balancing academics, cheerleading, a full-time job, and household responsibilities has taught me the value of effective time management, but I know there is still room for improvement. Strengthening this skill will not only help me achieve my personal and professional goals but also allow me to maximize my potential as a leader and a role model.
Time management is essential for balancing competing priorities while maintaining focus and well-being. At times, I find myself overwhelmed by the sheer volume of tasks I need to accomplish in a day. This can lead to last-minute efforts, stress, or missing opportunities to reflect and recharge. Recognizing this, I am committed to developing a more structured and intentional approach to managing my time.
My plan for improvement begins with adopting tools and strategies to organize my responsibilities effectively. One key step is using a planner or a digital calendar to schedule tasks, deadlines, and activities. By visualizing my commitments in one place, I can prioritize what needs immediate attention and allocate time to long-term goals. Setting specific blocks of time for studying, work, practice, and personal reflection will help me create a balance that allows for productivity without burnout.
Another component of my plan is practicing the art of delegation. As a cheer captain and someone who often takes on leadership roles, I tend to shoulder a significant share of responsibility. However, learning to trust and empower others to contribute is crucial. Delegating tasks to my teammates, coworkers, or family members not only lightens my load but also strengthens collaboration and builds mutual trust.
Additionally, I will focus on improving my ability to set boundaries. Saying “no” to commitments that don’t align with my goals or values is a skill I aim to refine. This will allow me to focus my energy on activities that truly matter, whether it’s excelling academically, deepening my relationships, or preparing for my future career in medicine.
To track my progress, I will conduct weekly self-assessments to evaluate how well I’ve adhered to my schedule and whether my time management strategies are effective. By reflecting on what worked and what didn’t, I can make adjustments and continue improving. Accountability will also be key—I plan to share my goals with a trusted mentor or peer who can offer guidance and encouragement.
Ultimately, strengthening my time management skills will allow me to excel in all aspects of my life while maintaining balance and focus. By mastering this attribute, I will be better equipped to lead with intention, serve others effectively, and pursue my aspirations with confidence and purpose.
Sheila A Burke Memorial Scholarship
As I envision my future as a nurse, I see a career rooted in compassion, advocacy, and lifelong learning. Nursing, to me, is not just a profession—it is a calling to serve others at their most vulnerable moments and a commitment to improving the health and well-being of individuals and communities. My ultimate vision as a nurse is to be a trusted caregiver, a patient advocate, and a leader in promoting health equity and innovation in healthcare. I aim to combine clinical expertise with empathy to make a meaningful difference in the lives of my patients and their families.
In the short term, my goal is to excel academically and build a strong foundation during my nursing education. I plan to immerse myself in clinical experiences, honing my technical skills and developing a deeper understanding of patient care. I want to embrace every opportunity to learn from mentors, peers, and patients, recognizing that each interaction is an opportunity to grow as both a nurse and a person. Whether it’s mastering the science behind complex medical procedures or learning how to comfort a patient facing uncertainty, I am committed to becoming the best nurse I can be.
As I move into my nursing career, I envision working in a hospital setting to gain hands-on experience in various specialties. While I am open to exploring different fields, I feel a strong pull toward critical care or pediatrics. In critical care, I would have the opportunity to care for patients in life-threatening situations, where precision and quick thinking are paramount. The intensity of this environment challenges nurses to deliver exceptional care while providing emotional support to patients and their families. Similarly, pediatrics offers the chance to impact young lives during formative years, helping children and their families navigate illnesses with resilience and hope. Both fields align with my desire to make a profound impact on my patients’ lives, whether in moments of crisis or through long-term care and support.
Beyond clinical practice, I see myself playing an active role in addressing systemic issues within the healthcare system. As a nurse, I want to be an advocate for underserved populations who often face barriers to accessing quality care. Growing up, I witnessed firsthand the disparities in healthcare experienced by people in my community, particularly people of color and those in low-income households. These inequities ignited a passion in me to work toward a healthcare system that is inclusive, equitable, and accessible to all. In the future, I hope to collaborate with community organizations, policymakers, and other healthcare professionals to implement programs that improve access to care and promote preventive health education.
Education will also be a cornerstone of my vision as a nurse. I aspire to become a source of knowledge and empowerment for my patients, helping them understand their health conditions and equipping them with the tools to make informed decisions about their care. Whether teaching a patient how to manage a chronic illness or explaining a treatment plan to a worried family, I believe that patient education is essential to fostering trust and improving outcomes. On a larger scale, I hope to contribute to public health campaigns that raise awareness about issues such as mental health, nutrition, and preventive care.
In the long term, I see myself pursuing advanced practice nursing, possibly as a nurse practitioner or nurse educator. As a nurse practitioner, I would have the opportunity to take on a more autonomous role in patient care, diagnosing illnesses, prescribing treatments, and managing care plans. This role would allow me to reach underserved populations, particularly in rural or low-income areas where access to healthcare providers is limited. Alternatively, as a nurse educator, I could inspire and train the next generation of nurses, sharing my experiences and passion for the profession to shape future leaders in healthcare. Both paths align with my desire to expand my impact beyond individual patients to influence the broader field of nursing.
Leadership is another important aspect of my vision for the future. I aspire to take on leadership roles within my workplace and professional organizations, advocating for policies and practices that enhance patient care and support the nursing profession. Whether serving on a hospital committee to improve patient safety or participating in initiatives to address the nursing shortage, I want to use my voice to make a difference. Leadership, to me, is about collaboration, innovation, and the courage to challenge the status quo in pursuit of better outcomes for patients and providers alike.
As I reflect on my vision for the future, I am also mindful of the importance of self-care and balance in sustaining a long and fulfilling nursing career. The emotional and physical demands of nursing can be challenging, but I am committed to finding ways to recharge and prioritize my well-being. I believe that a healthy, supported nurse is better equipped to provide exceptional care and maintain the compassion that is so essential to the profession. I plan to seek out mentorship and peer support, embrace opportunities for professional development, and practice mindfulness to remain grounded and focused.
In addition to my professional aspirations, I see nursing as a platform for personal growth and connection. Every patient I care for will bring a unique story, perspective, and set of challenges, enriching my understanding of humanity and reinforcing my commitment to service. Nursing offers the opportunity to build meaningful relationships, not only with patients but also with colleagues who share the same dedication to healing and advocacy. I look forward to being part of a profession that values teamwork, diversity, and lifelong learning.
Ultimately, my vision as a nurse is to leave a legacy of compassion, excellence, and positive change. I want to be remembered not just for my clinical skills but for the way I treated people—with kindness, respect, and a genuine desire to improve their lives. Whether I am comforting a patient in their final moments, celebrating a recovery, or inspiring a student to pursue their own nursing journey, I want my work to reflect the core values of the profession.
Nursing, to me, is more than a career—it is a calling to serve others, a platform for advocacy, and a pathway to creating a healthier, more equitable world. My vision for the future is one where I am not only a skilled and compassionate caregiver but also a leader, educator, and advocate who inspires others to dream bigger and do better. I am excited for the journey ahead and look forward to making a meaningful difference in the lives of my patients, my colleagues, and my community.

A Security Insurance Agency Scholarship
In recent years, states such as Florida, California, and Texas have faced significant challenges in maintaining affordable homeowners’ insurance. With the increasing frequency and intensity of natural disasters like hurricanes, floods, and wildfires, many insurance companies have chosen to leave these markets altogether. As a result, homeowners—particularly retirees and single parents—are burdened with skyrocketing premiums that can make insurance unaffordable. Addressing this crisis requires innovative, balanced solutions that meet the needs of insured individuals, insurance companies, and agencies. A combination of federal involvement, community incentives, and insurance agency reforms can provide a pathway toward stability and affordability.
One effective solution to this crisis is the creation of a federal reinsurance backstop. This program would act as a financial safety net for insurance companies, helping them manage the catastrophic risks associated with major natural disasters. For example, a federal reinsurance system could provide coverage for a portion of the losses incurred during large-scale disasters, reducing the financial strain on private insurers. This approach has proven effective in other contexts, such as the Terrorism Risk Insurance Act (TRIA), which stabilized the insurance market following 9/11. By reducing insurers’ exposure to unmanageable losses, a federal backstop would encourage companies to remain in high-risk markets, ensuring homeowners continue to have access to affordable coverage.
In addition to federal support, incentivizing resilient infrastructure is essential to mitigating the financial risks posed by natural disasters. States and local governments could implement grant programs or tax incentives to encourage homeowners to invest in disaster-resistant upgrades, such as reinforced roofing, fire-resistant materials, or elevated foundations in flood-prone areas. These improvements not only reduce the likelihood of catastrophic damage but also decrease the financial risk to insurance companies, which could lead to lower premiums for policyholders. Partnerships between insurance agencies and local governments to educate homeowners on these measures would further enhance community resilience.
Another critical component of the solution is the establishment of state-managed insurance pools. These pools, like Florida’s Citizens Property Insurance Corporation, can serve as insurers of last resort for residents who are unable to obtain coverage from private companies. While these programs already exist in some states, they can be expanded and better funded to meet the growing demand. By pooling resources and spreading risk across a larger base, state-managed insurance programs can offer coverage at more stable and affordable rates, ensuring that even the most vulnerable populations are protected.
Insurance agencies also have an important role to play in addressing this crisis. Agencies should adopt more flexible and innovative policies that consider the unique needs of homeowners in disaster-prone areas. For instance, offering tiered coverage plans or partial policies could allow homeowners to select affordable coverage tailored to their specific risks. Additionally, agencies can work with technology providers to implement predictive modeling and advanced risk assessments, which would enable more accurate pricing and reduce unnecessary premium hikes.
Ultimately, solving the insurance crisis in disaster-prone states requires collaboration among federal, state, and private entities. A federal reinsurance backstop can stabilize the market, resilient infrastructure can reduce risk, and state-managed pools can provide affordable options for those in need. At the same time, insurance agencies must innovate and adapt to the evolving landscape. By pursuing these strategies, we can create a more equitable and sustainable system that protects homeowners while ensuring the financial viability of insurance companies. This comprehensive approach will not only address the current crisis but also prepare communities for the challenges of a changing climate.
Hester Richardson Powell Memorial Service Scholarship
Resilience is about navigating life’s challenges with determination and hope, and I’ve come to understand its power through my own experiences. As a high school senior balancing academics, cheerleading, a full-time job, and family responsibilities, I’ve faced significant hurdles that have tested my strength. By persevering through these challenges, I’ve not only grown personally but also inspired those around me, proving that resilience can pave the way to success.
One of the most defining moments of my resilience occurred during my junior year of high school. My family faced financial difficulties, and I stepped up to work full-time while managing school and extracurricular commitments. As cheer captain, I was responsible for leading practices, supporting my teammates, and ensuring that our team met high standards of performance. Simultaneously, I had to maintain my grades and fulfill my duties at home, such as helping care for my younger siblings and managing household tasks.
It was overwhelming at times. There were days when I barely slept, juggling schoolwork, practice, and late-night shifts at work. However, I refused to let these circumstances define me. I leaned on time management strategies, set clear priorities, and reminded myself of my long-term goals. Slowly but surely, I found a rhythm that allowed me to handle these responsibilities and excel in each area.
This experience taught me that resilience is more than just enduring tough times; it’s about finding ways to grow through them. It’s about showing others that challenges, no matter how daunting, can be overcome with perseverance, support, and a positive mindset. By openly sharing my struggles and strategies, I’ve been able to inspire my peers to approach their own difficulties with courage and determination.
Resilience is now something I strive to embody in every area of my life. Whether it’s through mentoring younger students, helping my siblings navigate their own challenges, or encouraging my cheer team to persevere during tough practices, I aim to set an example of what it means to keep moving forward. I want others to see that setbacks are not the end of the road—they’re opportunities to grow stronger and more determined.
Resilience has shaped me into a stronger, more compassionate person, and it has given me the ability to inspire others facing their own struggles. By sharing my journey, I hope to remind others that they, too, have the strength to overcome life’s challenges. Resilience is a choice we make every day, and it has the power to uplift not just ourselves but everyone around us.

Adversity is a universal experience, and like everyone, I’ve faced challenges that have tested my strength, resilience, and determination. For me, balancing the many roles I play in my life—student, cheer captain, full-time worker, and family helper—has been a significant challenge. Each of these responsibilities demands time, energy, and focus, and juggling them has often felt overwhelming. However, through hard work and perseverance, I’ve learned to navigate these challenges, turning them into opportunities for growth. One of the most challenging periods of my life occurred during my junior year of high school. As cheer captain, I was responsible for leading practices, planning routines, and motivating my team. At the same time, I worked a full-time job to help support my family financially, while maintaining my grades and assisting with household responsibilities.
There were days when I felt completely drained, waking up at dawn for school, staying late for practice, working evening shifts, and coming home to study and help around the house. The pressure to excel in every area of my life was immense, and I often felt like I was falling short despite my best efforts.
Overcoming this adversity required me to make changes in how I approached my responsibilities. First, I learned to prioritize and manage my time effectively. I created a detailed schedule that allowed me to allocate time for each task, ensuring I could balance work, school, and cheer without neglecting my mental and physical health.
Second, I leaned on my support system. My family, friends, and teachers offered encouragement and understanding during difficult times. I learned the importance of asking for help when I needed it, whether it was seeking advice, delegating responsibilities, or simply venting my frustrations.
Finally, I stayed focused on my long-term goals. I reminded myself why I was working so hard: to pave the way for a successful future, provide for my family, and serve as a role model for others. This sense of purpose motivated me to push through tough moments.
This experience shaped me in profound ways. It taught me resilience—the ability to keep moving forward even when the odds feel stacked against me. I also developed strong time management and organizational skills, which have been invaluable in every area of my life. Most importantly, it taught me the power of perseverance and the value of staying true to my goals, no matter how challenging the journey may seem.
To anyone facing similar challenges, my advice is this: don’t give up on yourself. You are stronger than you realize, and even the hardest moments will pass. Take it one step at a time, breaking big tasks into smaller, more manageable pieces. Prioritize what matters most, and don’t be afraid to ask for help when you need it—leaning on others doesn’t make you weak; it makes you human.
Lastly, remember your “why.” Whether it’s your family, your dreams, or the example you want to set for others, let your purpose fuel you. Adversity is tough, but it’s also an opportunity to grow. Facing it head-on has shaped me into the person I am today, and I know it can do the same for others.

My ultimate career goal as a nurse is to provide compassionate, high-quality care to underserved communities while addressing healthcare disparities that many face daily. Nursing represents more than just a career to me—it is a calling to serve, heal, and advocate for others. As I prepare to transition to college and embark on this path, I am driven by my passion for caring for people, particularly those who feel overlooked in the healthcare system.
I aspire to specialize in community health nursing, where I can focus on preventative care and health education. I believe that access to healthcare should not depend on one’s socioeconomic status, and I want to work in areas where resources are limited to help bridge this gap. Long-term, I plan to earn an advanced degree to become a family nurse practitioner, enabling me to provide primary care and develop programs tailored to community needs.
One specific area I’m passionate about is maternal and child health. Growing up, I saw how limited healthcare access affected young mothers and children in my community. This fueled my desire to ensure that all families, regardless of income, have access to the care and support they need. I aim to create initiatives like free prenatal classes or mobile health clinics that bring resources directly to those who need them most. For me, nursing is not just about treating illnesses—it’s about fostering trust and empowering individuals to take control of their health. As a nurse, I want to be a resource for my community, not only providing medical care but also addressing underlying issues like health literacy and access to nutritious food.
Through outreach programs, I plan to educate people on managing chronic conditions like diabetes and high blood pressure. I also want to focus on preventative measures, teaching habits that promote healthier lifestyles. By connecting with patients on a personal level and understanding their unique challenges, I hope to be an advocate for positive change and long-term wellness. The military has played a significant role in shaping my values and aspirations. Coming from a military family, I’ve witnessed firsthand the discipline, sacrifice, and resilience it instills. Growing up in this environment taught me to remain calm under pressure, a skill I know will be invaluable in high-stress situations as a nurse.
Additionally, the military’s emphasis on service and community influenced my desire to pursue a career that prioritizes helping others. Seeing how military healthcare professionals cared for service members and their families inspired me to become a nurse and contribute to my own community in a similar way.In my career, I want to embody what nursing truly stands for—compassion, advocacy, and healing. By working in underserved areas and addressing healthcare inequities, I hope to leave a lasting impact on individuals and families in my community. Whether it’s through providing direct care, launching health initiatives, or inspiring others to pursue careers in nursing, I am determined to make a difference.
With each step I take, I am motivated by the belief that even small changes can transform lives. Through nursing, I aim to create a healthier, more equitable world—starting with my community.
Global Girls In STEM Scholarship
As a high school student, my experience in STEM has shaped my aspirations by showing me the limitless possibilities of innovation and its potential to solve real-world problems. By overcoming challenges, cultivating leadership skills, and staying true to my passions, I’m ready to embrace the next chapter of my STEM journey with purpose and determination.
GUTS- Olivia Rodrigo Fan Scholarship
A lyric from Olivia Rodrigo's GUTS that resonates with me is from her song "Ballad of a Homeschooled Girl," where she sings, “I’m terrified of the social scene / I don’t know what to say to anyone.” This line captures the essence of adolescent insecurity, the awkwardness of navigating social situations, and the fear of not fitting in—a feeling I think almost every teenager can relate to at some point.
Growing up, we’re constantly told that high school will be the “best years of our lives,” but the reality is often more complicated. The pressure to fit in, combined with the constant self-comparison that comes with social media, creates a world where it feels like everyone else has it figured out. Rodrigo’s lyric perfectly encapsulates that sense of being overwhelmed by social expectations and the nagging fear that you’re the only one who doesn’t know how to act or what to say. It’s like being on a stage with no script, where every move feels scrutinized, and every awkward interaction feels monumental.
For me, this lyric speaks to the challenge of finding confidence in a world that often feels like it’s filled with invisible rules. The teenage years are marked by a search for identity and acceptance, but it’s hard to feel secure when you’re second-guessing every word and action, worrying if you’re coming across as “cool” or “weird.” I’ve had times when I felt like I was the only one struggling to navigate social circles, or when I’ve been overly self-critical after a conversation, replaying it in my mind and dissecting every word. This lyric reminds me that these feelings are universal, even if they feel isolating in the moment. Knowing that someone as successful as Olivia Rodrigo has felt the same way is a reassuring reminder that it’s okay to not have it all figured out.
Another aspect of this lyric that resonates with me is the recognition that adolescence is a time filled with emotional highs and lows. We’re all trying to make sense of who we are, and that often comes with self-doubt, confusion, and awkwardness. Rodrigo’s lyric captures this uncertainty in such a simple but impactful way, showing that feeling out of place is part of the journey of growing up.
The line also reflects a deeper issue that many teenagers face: the pressure to fit in, even when it feels unnatural. The social scene can often feel performative, with unspoken expectations that dictate how you should act, dress, or speak. This can make it feel like being yourself is never quite enough. Rodrigo’s words give voice to the frustration and vulnerability of trying to conform while feeling like an outsider, a feeling that is often hidden behind carefully curated social media images and “perfect” online personas.
Ultimately, Olivia Rodrigo’s lyric resonates with me because it acknowledges the struggle of teenagehood in a raw and honest way. It’s a reminder that feeling lost or unsure is normal, and that these moments of insecurity don’t define us—they’re simply part of growing up. This lyric gives me comfort in knowing that, even in moments of doubt, I’m not alone in my experience, and I’m learning, bit by bit, to be okay with my own imperfections.

A time when I relied deeply on my faith to overcome a challenge was during my first year balancing a full-time job with school and my responsibilities as cheer captain. Juggling academics, cheerleading, work, and helping out at home was overwhelming. I was stretched thin, physically and mentally, and I began to feel like I couldn’t keep up with the demands. I was exhausted, stressed, and questioning whether I was capable of handling it all. It felt like no matter how hard I tried, I was falling short somewhere, and I started to lose confidence in myself.
In that moment of struggle, my faith became my source of strength and clarity. I remember one particularly tough night after a long day of classes, a demanding practice, and a late shift at work. I felt defeated and was tempted to give up some of my commitments. I prayed for guidance, asking for the strength to keep going and for reassurance that all the hard work would be worth it. Through prayer, I was reminded of the purpose behind each commitment I had made. I wasn’t doing it for praise or recognition; I was doing it for my family, my teammates, and my future.
As I continued to rely on my faith, I began to feel a sense of peace and renewed determination. I focused on the belief that God wouldn’t give me more than I could handle and that each challenge was shaping me for something greater. I kept repeating this belief to myself every day, letting it serve as a reminder that I wasn’t alone in my struggles. With that mindset, I was able to tackle each day, one step at a time. Instead of focusing on how overwhelming everything was, I broke down my responsibilities into manageable tasks and leaned into the support from my family and friends. I even opened up to my mom about how I was feeling, and her encouragement reinforced that I was on the right path.
Through my faith, I learned to trust the process and find purpose in the struggle. Slowly, I saw my perseverance pay off as I managed to balance my responsibilities better, gain confidence, and strengthen my relationships with those around me. I became more organized and learned to ask for help when I needed it, understanding that it didn’t mean I was weak but rather that I was determined to keep going.
Looking back, I realize that my faith didn’t just help me get through that difficult time—it deepened my resilience and shaped my character. It taught me the power of trusting in something bigger than myself, which gave me the courage to push forward even when things seemed impossible. Now, whenever I face a new challenge, I know I can rely on my faith as my foundation, helping me find strength, purpose, and clarity amid life’s uncertainties.
Resilient Scholar Award
Growing up in a single-parent household has shaped me in profound ways. My mom has always been my rock, taking on multiple roles—provider, supporter, cheerleader, and guide. Her resilience has instilled in me the value of hard work, dedication, and the importance of family. Watching her juggle responsibilities to make sure we have everything we need has been both humbling and inspiring. In many ways, this upbringing has made me more independent and responsible; I know what it means to step up, especially when it comes to helping out at home and doing my part to support our family.
One of my biggest accomplishments—and a moment that changed how I see myself and others—was becoming the captain of my school’s cheer team. Cheerleading has always been a big part of my life, and being selected as captain meant that my teammates and coaches saw leadership potential in me. At first, I thought being captain was all about leading chants, keeping up team morale, and organizing practices. However, the role turned out to be much more challenging and transformative than I expected. I learned that being a good leader meant supporting my teammates through their struggles, encouraging them to grow, and sometimes even being the one to make difficult decisions to keep the team moving forward.
One pivotal moment as captain was when a teammate struggled with balancing her schoolwork and cheer obligations. She was falling behind academically, which impacted her performance on the team and affected her self-confidence. Instead of only thinking about the impact on the team, I realized I needed to support her as an individual. I reached out to her, offering to help with her schoolwork during our free periods and even organizing study sessions for the whole team. This experience taught me that being a leader is not just about achieving goals or winning competitions; it’s about uplifting others and helping them succeed. It showed me the importance of empathy, patience, and understanding, especially when people face challenges that aren’t immediately visible.
This realization has reshaped my approach to all my relationships, not just with my teammates. I now see that everyone has struggles and that a little understanding can go a long way. It’s also given me confidence in my ability to make a difference in others’ lives. Becoming captain taught me not only about leadership but also about compassion, selflessness, and the power of a supportive community.
Being raised in a single-parent household and experiencing the responsibilities that come with it have given me a strong sense of resilience, independence, and purpose. I’ve learned the importance of hard work and adaptability, which I bring into everything I do. This journey has made me who I am today—driven, empathetic, and ready to tackle whatever challenges come my way.
Wicked Fan Scholarship
I'm a fan of Wicked because it’s a powerful story about friendship, individuality, and challenging societal norms, all told through captivating music, relatable characters, and stunning visuals. This musical takes an iconic story we think we know—The Wizard of Oz—and flips it on its head, allowing us to see things from the perspective of the "villain," Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West. I love how Wicked brings empathy and nuance to her story, revealing her as misunderstood rather than inherently evil, with struggles and dreams that many of us can relate to.
One of the main reasons Wicked resonates with me is the friendship between Elphaba and Glinda. Their dynamic is layered and complex, starting from a rivalry and growing into a deep, supportive friendship that withstands countless challenges. Their relationship is inspiring because it highlights the importance of understanding and acceptance, despite differences. The musical demonstrates how we can find connection in unexpected places and how people can change each other for the better. I find the song "For Good" particularly moving because it captures how transformative friendships can be, even if they don’t always last.
Elphaba's character is another reason Wicked has such a strong impact on me. She’s constantly labeled as different because of her green skin, and society treats her as an outcast because she doesn't fit the mold. Despite facing ridicule and discrimination, Elphaba remains true to herself, pursuing what she believes is right even when it’s unpopular. Her journey is empowering; she refuses to compromise her values for acceptance and learns to embrace her unique qualities, singing “Defying Gravity” as a declaration of her independence and strength. For anyone who has felt like an outsider or struggled with self-acceptance, Elphaba’s story is both uplifting and motivating.
The musical’s themes extend beyond individual characters, touching on broader societal issues like prejudice, power, and corruption. Wicked subtly critiques how people in power manipulate narratives to control perceptions, as seen in how the Wizard creates fear around Elphaba to keep control. This aspect of the story reminds me of the importance of questioning authority and seeking the truth, rather than blindly accepting what we’re told. It’s a powerful lesson in critical thinking and integrity.
Finally, the music in Wicked is unforgettable. Each song is beautifully crafted to enhance the emotional journey of the characters. Numbers like "Defying Gravity," "Popular," and "I'm Not That Girl" each evoke different emotions, from empowerment to humor to heartbreak. The score makes the experience immersive, bringing the characters’ struggles and triumphs to life in a way that words alone couldn’t.
Overall, Wicked is more than just a story—it’s an experience that leaves audiences reflecting on friendship, individuality, and the courage to be true to oneself. The combination of an imaginative story, complex characters, and powerful music makes Wicked a timeless piece that I can revisit time and again, always finding something new to appreciate. It’s a reminder of the importance of empathy, resilience, and self-acceptance, and that’s why I’m such a fan.

When a topic doesn’t fully “click” in class, I can find explanations from different angles until it makes sense. Channels like CrashCourse and Khan Academy’s YouTube channel offer engaging and digestible content, often connecting concepts to real-world applications, which makes it easier to understand how they apply outside of school.
Chegg is invaluable for homework help. It provides detailed solutions to complex problems, allowing me to see the steps involved rather than just the answer. I use it not only to complete assignments but also to understand alternative problem-solving strategies. This resource has enhanced my problem-solving skills, showing me multiple methods for tackling similar questions.
Lastly, Grammarly helps me refine my writing, especially in subjects that require essays and reports. It points out grammatical issues and offers stylistic suggestions, allowing me to focus on articulating my ideas clearly. Over time, this tool has improved my written communication skills, helping me express complex ideas with clarity and precision.
These tools, by offering explanations, practice, and feedback, have been instrumental in helping me not only understand but also apply knowledge in diverse ways, preparing me for both exams and practical scenarios.

As a U.S. citizen, one of the greatest challenges my family faced when coming to this country was adjusting to a completely new culture, system, and way of life, all while working to build a stable and successful future. While my parents sought better opportunities, we faced the obstacles of limited resources, a lack of familiarity with the U.S. education system, and the challenge of finding a place in a society that often viewed us as outsiders. The transition wasn’t easy, especially as we navigated new jobs, schools, and language barriers. The pressure to adapt quickly while holding on to our values and culture made every day feel like a balancing act.
This experience has shaped who I am today in many important ways. Growing up in an environment where we had to be resourceful and resilient taught me the importance of perseverance and hard work. Watching my parents overcome these challenges—often without many resources—instilled in me a deep sense of responsibility and determination to succeed. I learned that success doesn’t always come easily, but with dedication, you can break through barriers. This mindset has made me resilient in the face of my own obstacles, knowing that hard work and adaptability will lead to growth.
The challenge of starting anew in a different country taught me the value of education. My parents always emphasized that education was the key to breaking out of difficult circumstances and achieving a better life. I saw how hard they worked to support our family, and it fueled my belief in the power of learning and education as a tool for creating opportunities. I’ve carried this belief with me throughout my academic journey, not just as a personal goal but as a way to uplift my family and others who may face similar challenges.
Another aspect of my experience was learning the importance of community. As my family adjusted to life in the U.S., we relied on friends, mentors, and neighbors to help us navigate challenges. This sense of community, the willingness to help one another, and the importance of having a support system are values that I carry with me today. Whether it’s supporting my peers in school or helping my family with new challenges, I understand the power of community and the impact of lifting each other up.
Finally, my experiences as a U.S. citizen—balancing my cultural identity with the demands of adapting to American society—have made me more empathetic and driven to help others. I know what it’s like to struggle with unfamiliarity and being outside your comfort zone, so I’m passionate about ensuring others feel supported and empowered to pursue their dreams, especially those who may be facing similar challenges.
In conclusion, the challenges my family and I faced when coming to the U.S. have shaped me into someone who values resilience, education, community, and empathy. These lessons have fueled my desire to use my education and experiences to make a positive impact on others and to help those who are still navigating similar struggles.

My love for science and math is driven by the way these subjects help us understand the world and solve real-life problems. I believe that by sharing my passion for these fields, I can inspire future students to see their potential in these areas and encourage them to embrace curiosity and critical thinking.
One way I would impact future students is by making science and math more accessible. Many students feel intimidated by these subjects, often thinking they're too difficult or not for them. I want to break down these barriers by making lessons engaging and relevant. I’d use real-world examples to show how science and math apply to everyday life, from technology to healthcare to environmental sustainability. This can help students see that these subjects aren't just abstract concepts but tools that can drive change in their communities.
Additionally, I plan to integrate hands-on learning. Science and math can come to life through experiments, projects, and interactive activities. By creating opportunities for students to experiment and problem-solve, I’ll help them build confidence and experience the joy of discovery. This approach will not only deepen their understanding of the material but also encourage them to take risks, ask questions, and think creatively.
Mentorship is also a key part of how I would influence future students. I’ve personally benefited from mentors who encouraged me in science and math, and I’d love to pay that forward. By offering guidance outside of the classroom—whether it’s through tutoring, after-school programs, or simply offering support when students are struggling—I’d help students build resilience and perseverance. I would also highlight career opportunities in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) fields to show them that these subjects can lead to exciting, well-paying jobs.
Furthermore, I would advocate for diversity in STEM education. Many students from underrepresented backgrounds may not have access to resources or role models in science and math. I want to be a visible, supportive figure for those students, showing them that they belong in these fields. I would also work to ensure that all students, regardless of their background, have access to the materials, opportunities, and encouragement they need to succeed in STEM.
Lastly, I’d collaborate with teachers and community leaders to ensure that the curriculum reflects the needs and interests of students. By staying engaged with students' feedback and adjusting my teaching methods accordingly, I would create a classroom environment where every student feels valued and motivated to learn.
In sum, my goal is to foster a love for science and math in students by making the subjects more accessible, relatable, and fun. I believe that by showing students how these fields can be both personally and professionally rewarding, I can help inspire the next generation of innovators, problem-solvers, and leaders.
Ryan Stripling “Words Create Worlds” Scholarship for Young Writers
Writing has always been a method for me to express myself and understand the world. From a young age, I discovered that words could express my thoughts and emotions in ways that were both liberating and enlightening. Writing allowed me to dive thoroughly into topics that interested me, such as social justice, history, and human psychology. I enjoy the process of translating a complex notion into something tangible, whether it's an essay, a tale, or a poetry. Writing allows me to explore new viewpoints, question my assumptions, and connect with others in ways that are not possible in regular discussion.
In high school, writing became even more important to me. It was not only a personal interest, but also an opportunity to make a difference. I started writing for my school's newspaper, focused on topics affecting my neighborhood. I discussed mental health, cultural identity, and the impact of socioeconomic inequities on kids' academic lives. I like how my words could start conversations, elicit empathy, and draw attention to issues that were sometimes disregarded. Writing about these challenges taught me how effective words can be in developing understanding and encouraging change. This event reinforced my commitment to writing as a tool for advocacy and narrative.
In college, I intend to continue my writing career by contributing to school publications such as the student newspaper or literary magazine, where I will be able to explore and express the themes that are most important to me with a larger audience. I'm delighted to be a part of a collegiate community with various viewpoints and experiences, and I'm looking forward to writing about issues that affect both students and the greater community. I'm also hoping to locate a writing club or workshop where I can share my creative writing, whether it's fiction, poetry, or personal essays, and learn from other writers who are equally passionate about their profession. Being a member of a club will help me stay motivated, improve my abilities, and give me
Furthermore, I see writing as a talent that will complement my academic and professional goals. As I work toward my academic and professional goals, writing will help me analyze my experiences, clarify my views, and communicate effectively. I feel that good writing abilities are vital regardless of the area I choose, and I intend to incorporate them into my college experience by selecting courses that require me to think critically and articulate myself clearly.
Beyond controlled situations, I intend to maintain a personal journal in which I can freely express my thoughts, ideas, and reflections as I navigate academic life. I know that journaling will help me stay grounded by giving me opportunity to reflect on my experiences and progress over time. Writing allows me to make sense of the world and myself, and I never want to lose it. College is the ideal environment for me to hone my voice, experiment with new ideas, and push the limits of my creativity. I'm excited to bring my passion of writing to college, where I'll utilize it to connect my experiences, my community, and the world around me.

Growing up as a Black girl, I was always very connected to my neighborhood and felt compelled to give back. Watching family members struggle to get quality healthcare due to cultural and systemic hurdles drove me to pursue a career that would allow me to make a difference. I observed how medical misunderstandings and implicit biases influenced their treatment, frequently making them feel invisible and unheard. These events inspired me to work in healthcare, namely nursing, where I could advocate for others and guarantee that everyone received compassionate, courteous, and culturally sensitive care.
As a prospective nurse, my goal is to address healthcare disparities by advocating for people from varied backgrounds. I am enthusiastic about breaking down obstacles that disproportionately affect Black communities, particularly those related to mental health care, maternal health, and chronic illness management. Black women, in particular, have shockingly high maternal death rates, and I believe nurses can help address these inequities by listening to patients, advocating for their needs, and assuring equitable treatment. My personal experience dealing with healthcare issues in my family has taught me that being there, listening, and taking the time to understand a patient's particular circumstances can sometimes have the greatest influence.
I intend to use my nursing position to educate and empower my patients, in addition to providing exceptional patient care. Through community health projects, I wish to raise awareness about preventative care and promote healthy practices in underserved areas. I envisage arranging workshops and health checks in collaboration with community centers and schools, delivering healthcare resources to those who need them the most.
In the long run, I hope to become a nurse practitioner and start a clinic that focuses on holistic and culturally sensitive care. My objective is to create a safe environment in which Black and minority patients feel truly recognized, respected, and cared for. By addressing health disparities at the grassroots level, I hope to foster trust and have a meaningful impact on my community's well-being. As a Black female in nursing, I have a unique perspective and obligation, and I am dedicated to changing healthcare into a career that serves everyone equally, particularly those whose voices have frequently gone unnoticed.
Beyond my own goals, I wish to be a role model for other young Black girls who do not yet see themselves represented in healthcare. Too often, minorities lack role models in industries such as nursing, making these careers appear remote or unachievable. I want to demonstrate that we can not only excel in these professions, but also bring significant change and compassion to them. Through mentorship programs, speaking at local schools, and volunteering, I hope to inspire future generations to pursue healthcare careers and advocate for health fairness. I believe that representation in healthcare benefits more than simply patients; it also generates trust, understanding, and a more inclusive system. I am dedicated to tearing down boundaries and empowering people.

As a Black girl growing up in Los Angeles, I soon realized the expectations and prejudices society placed on me. Subtle presumptions about my academic interests and overt prejudices in how others viewed my goals were among the pressures. I had to navigate a society that frequently viewed me through stereotyped prisms. However, I was aware from the beginning that I wanted to go against these norms and reinterpret what it meant to be a young Black woman in my community.
My senior year of high school was a turning point in my journey. I went to a school where athletics received the majority of the funding, and students from my area were frequently directed toward less demanding academic programs. However, I had a strong interest in environmental justice, a topic that was hardly mentioned in my community or school. I witnessed personally how low-income, minority areas in Los Angeles were disproportionately impacted by pollution, with problems ranging from poor air quality to restricted access to green spaces. I suggested forming an environmental justice club with the goal of teaching students about the ways in which these issues impacted our communities because I was determined to make a difference.
At first, the concept was regarded with scepticism. Friends questioned why I would focus on "nature stuff" rather than participating in activities that appeared more "practical" for our town. Teachers and administrators, while cordial, did not see the purpose in allocating money to an environmental group at an inner-city school. They perceived it as a luxury issue, unrelated to my classmates' immediate worries. However, I knew that environmental justice was about equity and health—it was about our right to breathe clean air, have access to green areas, and lobby for policies that benefit everyone, not just the city's wealthiest districts.
I approached the task by assembling a small but dedicated group of friends who shared my idea. We started researching, contacting local environmental organizations, and reaching out to community leaders. We held meetings and invited speakers to examine the effects of pollution in South Los Angeles and surrounding communities. We even arranged a community clean-up day, which drew attention from other kids and instructors. As word spread, the administration took note, and by the end of the year, they had approved a modest budget for our group.
This event taught me how powerful one voice, supported by a community, can be in shaping people's thoughts and actions. It also taught me that society conventions are frequently just hurdles waiting to be demolished. Through my lobbying, I was able to spark a discussion about the importance of environmental health in my school and area, particularly among minority communities. I witnessed younger students join engaged, proudly donning our club's t-shirts and continuing the work we had begun. It grew from a club to a movement.
Now, I'm committed to a future in which I can continue to address environmental disparities, leveraging my skills to engage with groups who are frequently left out of the discourse. My experiences as a Black girl in Los Angeles have formed me into a pioneer who understands that breaking down barriers is more than simply a personal win; it is a method to generate possibilities and inspire change for others. This experience has taught me that breaking expectations is more than just pushing boundaries; it is also about broadening what is possible for everyone around you.
Women in Healthcare Scholarship
I recently found out that I have gallstones, which is something that can be very painful. This was especially painful because I didn't know how to fix the problem and I didn't know I had it so I was only making matters worse everyday. Knowing that there are people out here that are way worse off and go through way worse things when it comes to healthcare. I want to be one of the people that are able to help and motivate them to keep going.
As a black woman in the healthcare field I hope to inspire those after me and show them that just because our standards were set for us doesn't mean we can't exceed those set standards. I want my patient's to be able to look at me and trust me solely based on the fact that I am good at my job and not look at my skin color and what they have heard from society. I want to be able to heal people and allow them to feel better physically and emotionally about themselves. Being able to support the patient's in any way they need, and my team for that matter. Give them motivation when it is needed, allow them to know it's ok not to be strong every time and that the truly strong people show their emotions.
I would also love to be able to advocate for equitable healthcare access, particularly for underserved communities, and those who are unable to advocate for themselves. By raising awareness about health disparities and working with policymakers, I can contribute to creating systemic changes that ensure everyone receives quality care, regardless of their background or socioeconomic status.
I hope to empower the next generation of female leaders in healthcare, encouraging them to pursue their dreams and break through barriers in this traditionally male-dominated field. Allow them to have a figure to look up to when they don't believe they can get here. Someone who can prove all the theories wrong and show the young girls that they can write their own narrative. I plan to engage with communities through educational programs on health literacy, particularly among underserved populations. Empowering individuals with knowledge about their health can significantly improve outcomes.
Ultimately, I want be the healthcare provided that shows up and shows out for their patient and those around who need it the most. Giving the community a chance to grow and learn more about the healthcare field.
