My name is Tarruck Wheeler, and I am enrolled in the Dr. Floyd F. Koch Honors program at Palm Beach State College, I am majoring in computer science and a minor in international relations, and in my second year with a 4.0 GPA. I am a nontraditional student who matriculated into higher education later in life after a diagnosis of a learning disability. When I was 17, I had my son, and with that came the responsibilities of being a parent. I was not able to fully participate or complete my formal educational experience. I entered the workforce and have first-hand experience of how difficult raising a child without a college degree has taught me how valuable education truly is. Later in life, my son was diagnosed with dyslexia, and I was also diagnosed with dyslexia. It was as if a lightbulb illuminated my mind, and all the learning difficulties that my son and I experienced in the past made sense. I then decided to commit to the journey back into formal education to get a degree in computer science and, eventually, a master's degree in Cybersecurity. I am the student trustee of my institution linking the board directors to the student body. I enjoy the dynamic job of acting as a surrogate for the student’s voice.
