I am a hardworking, determined, and goal-oriented student-athlete from Clairton High School. Throughout high school, I have participated in basketball, football, and track, experiences that have helped shape my character and teach me important life lessons about discipline, teamwork, leadership, and perseverance. Balancing academics with athletics has not always been easy, but it has helped me become more responsible and focused on my future goals. My experiences in sports, school, and my community have inspired me to pursue a career where I can positively influence others and make a meaningful difference. One of the most important things about me is that I value growth, both for myself and for the people around me. Through sports, I have learned how important encouragement and leadership can be. Coaches and teachers have had a major impact on my life by pushing me to believe in myself and continue working hard even during difficult times. Their guidance showed me how powerful education and mentorship can be, which is one reason I became interested in a future career connected to education and leadership. As an educator, I want to make a positive impact by helping students build confidence in themselves and recognize their potential. I understand that every student learns differently and faces different challenges, whether academically, emotionally, or personally. I want to create an environment where students feel supported, respected, and motivated to succeed. I believe education is about more than just teaching lessons from a textbook—it is also about helping students develop discipline, character, and self-belief. My experiences as a student-athlete have prepared me for this role because they taught me patience, communication, and teamwork. In sports, I learned how important it is to encourage others, stay positive during setbacks, and lead by example. I have tried to use those same qualities when helping younger teammates or classmates who needed support. Whether helping someone understand schoolwork or encouraging a teammate after a difficult game, I realized that small acts of encouragement can have a lasting impact on someone’s confidence and success. In the future, I hope to inspire students the same way my mentors inspired me. I want to be someone who motivates young people to stay focused on their goals, believe in their abilities, and continue working hard regardless of obstacles. I especially want to help students who may struggle with confidence or face challenges outside of school, because I understand how important support and encouragement can be during difficult times. Beyond the classroom, I also want to positively impact my community by mentoring young athletes and students. I hope to use my experiences in sports and education to teach younger generations about responsibility, leadership, and perseverance. I want students to understand that success comes through consistency, effort, and the willingness to learn from mistakes. Overall, I plan to make a positive impact on the world as an educator by supporting, motivating, and guiding students toward success. I want to help young people grow not only academically, but also personally, so they can become confident and successful individuals in their own lives and communities.
    Honorable Shawn Long Memorial Scholarship
My career goals are centered around building a future in sports information, where I can combine my passion for athletics with communication, leadership, and media. As a student-athlete who has participated in basketball, football, and track at Clairton High School, sports have played a major role in shaping my identity and work ethic. Through these experiences, I have developed a strong appreciation for the behind-the-scenes work that goes into athletics, including promoting teams, managing statistics, sharing athlete stories, and connecting communities to sports programs. In the future, I hope to work in sports information at the college or professional level. I am especially interested in roles that involve sports media, athletic communications, and public relations. I enjoy the idea of helping tell athletes’ stories in a way that highlights their hard work and dedication. I also want to contribute to the success of athletic programs by helping organize events, manage information, and create positive engagement between teams and fans. Another goal of mine is to develop strong leadership and communication skills that will allow me to grow in this field over time. I understand that sports information requires attention to detail, organization, and the ability to work under pressure. Whether it is managing game-day operations, updating statistics, or communicating with coaches and media, I know that success in this career depends on being reliable and adaptable. I plan to continue building these skills through education, internships, and hands-on experience in college. My high school experiences have already helped prepare me for this path. Being a student-athlete has taught me discipline, teamwork, and time management. Balancing academics with multiple sports has shown me how to stay organized and focused even during stressful times. Achievements such as winning a state championship and scoring 1,000 career points in basketball also taught me the importance of preparation, consistency, and leadership. These lessons will continue to guide me as I move forward in my education and career. This scholarship would play a major role in helping me achieve my goals. First, it would provide financial support that would allow me to focus more on my education without the added stress of financial burdens. College can be expensive, and having support would give me the ability to fully concentrate on my studies, training, and professional development opportunities. Second, this scholarship would help me access opportunities like internships, networking events, and educational resources. In sports information, real-world experience is very important, and working with athletic departments would help me build the hands-on skills I need. This support would also reduce financial stress and allow me to focus more on gaining experience and growing in my career. Finally, this scholarship would help me continue growing as a leader and role model. I want to use my education not only to build a successful career for myself, but also to give back to my community. I hope to return and support younger athletes by sharing my experiences and encouraging them to pursue their goals. I want to show others that with hard work, discipline, and dedication, it is possible to turn your passion into a career. Overall, my career goals in sports information are driven by my love for athletics and my desire to work in a field that combines communication, leadership, and teamwork. This scholarship would provide the support I need to continue my education, gain valuable experience, and move closer to achieving my long-term goals. It would also help me stay focused on building a future where I can succeed professionally while positively impacting others.
Marie J. Lamerique Scholarship for Aspiring Scholars
A specific moment that challenged me because of my upbringing and family circumstances happened during my high school years when my family was going through financial and personal stress while I was also heavily involved in sports and school. At the time, I was playing basketball, football, and track at Clairton High School, and I was also trying to maintain strong academic performance. On the outside, I still showed up every day ready to compete and work hard, but internally I was dealing with pressure from home that made balancing everything much more difficult. There was a period when things at home became especially stressful, and I had to take on more responsibility outside of school. This meant helping more around the house, being available for family needs, and still trying to keep up with practices, games, and school assignments. I remember feeling overwhelmed at times because I wanted to perform well in sports, stay focused in class, and also be there for my family. It felt like I was being pulled in multiple directions at once, and I had to mature quickly to manage it all. One particular week stands out to me. We had an important stretch of basketball games, and I was also dealing with responsibilities at home that required my attention after school. I was tired, mentally stressed, and unsure how I would balance everything. There were moments when I questioned whether I could continue performing at a high level in sports while handling everything else going on in my life. However, instead of giving up or letting the pressure affect my attitude, I made a decision to stay disciplined and focus on what I could control. I communicated with my coaches and made sure they understood my situation without using it as an excuse. I continued attending practice and games, but I also made sure to stay organized with my schoolwork and responsibilities at home. I began managing my time more carefully, using every available moment to stay on top of assignments and prepare for practices. I also leaned on my support system, including coaches, teammates, and teachers, who encouraged me to stay focused and keep pushing forward. During that time, sports became more than just competition for me—it became an outlet and a source of structure. When I was on the court or field, I was able to channel my stress into something productive. It reminded me of the importance of discipline and consistency, even when life outside of sports was difficult. I learned that showing up every day, regardless of what you are going through, is a form of strength. That experience changed the way I view challenges and shaped how I approach my future. It taught me that adversity is not something that should stop you, but something that should help you grow. I learned how to stay composed under pressure, manage my time more effectively, and take responsibility for both my personal and academic life. Most importantly, I learned that success is not just about talent or ability, but about resilience and the willingness to keep going when things are difficult. Because of that experience, I now approach my future with a stronger mindset. I understand that challenges will continue to come, whether in college, a career in sports information, or life in general. However, I now have confidence in my ability to handle pressure and adapt to difficult situations. I know how to stay focused, ask for help when needed, and remain disciplined even when circumstances are not ideal. Overall, that moment taught me maturity, responsibility, and perseverance. It shaped me into someone who does not avoid challenges but instead faces them head-on. As I move forward, I carry those lessons with me, knowing that my background has prepared me to work hard, stay focused, and continue striving toward my goals no matter what obstacles I encounter.
    Lewis Rural Opportunity Scholarship
Growing up in a rural community has given me many opportunities, but it has also come with challenges that shaped my goals and work ethic. One of the biggest challenges I have faced is limited access to resources and opportunities compared to larger cities. In my area, there are fewer job programs, fewer advanced training options, and fewer exposure opportunities for careers in trades, business, or military leadership. Because of this, I learned early that if I wanted to succeed, I would need to stay disciplined, take initiative, and make the most of every opportunity I was given. Being in a rural environment also meant that I had to learn responsibility at a young age. Whether it was balancing school, sports, and family responsibilities, or finding ways to improve myself without always having outside support, I developed a strong work ethic. Playing basketball, football, and track helped me stay focused and gave me structure. It also taught me teamwork, leadership, and perseverance, especially during difficult moments when resources were limited but expectations remained high. These experiences influenced my interest in leadership and career paths where discipline and responsibility are essential, such as business and sports information. I became interested in how organizations operate, how leaders make decisions, and how communication plays a key role in success. Sports especially showed me the importance of preparation, organization, and accountability, which are all skills that translate directly into business and leadership roles. A major part of my growth came from learning how to lead others despite challenges. In sports, I learned how to stay positive during setbacks, encourage teammates, and continue working hard even when things were difficult. These lessons helped me realize that leadership is not about where you come from, but how you respond to your environment and the people around you. My rural background taught me resilience and the importance of creating opportunities rather than waiting for them. This scholarship would play a major role in helping me reach my goals. Financial support would allow me to focus more on my education and career development without the added stress of financial burden. It would also give me access to opportunities such as internships, networking, and academic resources that can help me grow professionally. With this support, I would be able to pursue my education in sports information or a related field and gain the skills needed to succeed in business or leadership roles. More importantly, this scholarship would help me continue giving back to my community. I want to return and serve as a role model for younger students who may face similar challenges. I hope to show them that where you come from does not limit where you can go, and that with hard work, discipline, and determination, success is possible. Overall, my rural upbringing has shaped my character, strengthened my goals, and motivated me to pursue a future in leadership. This scholarship would help me continue that journey and allow me to turn my experiences into opportunities for both personal success and community impact.
    David G. Sutton Memorial Scholarship
One of the most positive influences in my life has been my high school coach. As a student-athlete at Clairton High School playing basketball, football, and track, I have faced pressure both on and off the court. There was a time during basketball season when I struggled with balancing sports, school, and personal expectations. I wanted to perform at a high level every game, but after a few disappointing performances, I became frustrated with myself and started losing confidence. I began focusing too much on mistakes instead of continuing to play with energy and trust in my abilities. My coach noticed the change in my attitude and took time to talk with me after practice one day. Instead of only discussing basketball, he talked to me about leadership, discipline, and character. He reminded me that challenges and setbacks are part of growth and that true leaders do not give up when things become difficult. He explained that success is not measured only by points scored or awards won, but also by how you respond to adversity and how you support the people around you. That conversation changed my mindset. I started focusing less on individual pressure and more on improving every day and helping my teammates succeed. I worked harder in practice, became more encouraging toward others, and learned how to stay mentally strong during difficult moments. Over time, my confidence returned, and our team eventually won a state championship. Reaching milestones like scoring 1,000 career points in basketball became even more meaningful because I understood that success came from teamwork, discipline, and perseverance rather than individual recognition alone. The lessons my coach taught me continue to impact my life today. He showed me the importance of humility, accountability, and leading by example. Those are qualities that I try to carry with me in school, sports, and everyday life. I believe these traits reflect the values David cared about, including leadership, dedication, selflessness, and treating others with respect. I exemplify these traits by trying to support others both on and off the field. As an athlete, I encourage younger teammates and try to help them improve instead of criticizing them when they make mistakes. I understand how important confidence and support can be because I experienced those struggles myself. I also try to lead by example through hard work, discipline, and maintaining a positive attitude even during difficult situations. Outside of sports, I show these values by helping classmates and supporting my family whenever needed. Whether it is helping someone understand schoolwork, encouraging a friend during a tough time, or helping at home, I try to be dependable and considerate of others. I believe leadership is not just about achievements or titles—it is about how you treat people and the positive impact you have on those around you. Overall, my coach helped me overcome self-doubt and taught me lessons that will stay with me for the rest of my life. His guidance helped me become a better athlete, student, teammate, and person. Because of his influence, I continue striving to lead with humility, determination, and kindness while working toward my future goals.
    Heather Brown Sports Information Scholarship
My career goals in sports information combine my passion for athletics, communication, and leadership. As a student-athlete in basketball, football, and track, I have seen the work that goes into promoting teams, managing information, and connecting communities through sports. In the future, I hope to work with athletes and organizations while helping create positive experiences for players and fans. One of my goals is to work in sports media or athletic communications at the college or professional level. I am interested in areas such as social media management, sports broadcasting, public relations, and game-day operations. I enjoy learning about the way sports organizations communicate with fans and highlight athletes’ accomplishments. I also want to help tell stories that inspire others, especially younger athletes who may look up to student-athletes in their communities. I believe the most important skills needed to succeed in sports information are communication, organization, leadership, and adaptability. Communication is important because people working in sports information must be able to interact with athletes, coaches, fans, and media professionally. Organization is also necessary because managing statistics, schedules, events, and deadlines requires strong attention to detail. Leadership and adaptability matter because sports environments can change quickly, and people need to stay calm under pressure while working as part of a team. I plan to continue building these skills through both academics and personal experiences. Participating in sports has already helped me improve my teamwork, discipline, and leadership abilities. Balancing basketball, football, track, and school responsibilities taught me how to manage my time and stay focused even during stressful situations. In the future, I want to gain more experience with technology, media, and communication by taking courses related to sports management, communications, or business. I also hope to participate in internships or volunteer opportunities that allow me to work around athletic programs and gain hands-on experience. My experiences in high school have shown me that I have potential in this area. Winning a state championship and scoring 1,000 career points in basketball taught me the value of dedication, preparation, and teamwork. As a student-athlete, I have also learned how important it is to represent yourself, your teammates, and your school positively. Those experiences helped me become more confident as a leader and communicator. In addition to my career goals, I try to show generosity and kindness in my everyday life. I believe helping others and supporting people around you is one of the most important qualities a person can have. One way I show this is by encouraging younger teammates and helping them improve both on and off the court. I understand how difficult it can be to build confidence, so I try to lead by example and support others whenever possible. I also help classmates when they need support with schoolwork or balancing responsibilities. Whether it is sharing notes, helping someone study, or simply encouraging a friend during a difficult time, I try to be dependable and positive. At home, I help my family with responsibilities whenever needed because I know the importance of supporting the people who support me. Overall, my experiences as a student-athlete have shaped both my career goals and my values. I want to continue growing as a leader, communicator, and teammate while building a future in sports information. At the same time, I hope to continue making a positive impact on the people around me through kindness, generosity, and hard work.
    Olivia Rodrigo Fan Scholarship
Music often connects with people because it reflects emotions and experiences that are difficult to explain. Some of Olivia Rodrigo’s songs resonate with me because they capture feelings of pressure, growth, self-doubt, and perseverance that I have experienced throughout high school as a student-athlete balancing basketball, football, track, academics, and personal responsibilities. One lyric that stands out to me is from drivers license when Olivia sings, “I still see your face.” Even though the song focuses on heartbreak, I connect to the idea of holding onto memories and moments that shaped you. High school has been full of experiences that I will never forget, including winning a state championship, scoring 1,000 points in basketball, and creating strong relationships with teammates and coaches. Those memories continue to motivate me and remind me of how much hard work it took to achieve my goals. Another lyric that connects to my journey comes from brutal where Olivia says, “Where’s my fucking teenage dream?” Although the wording is emotional and dramatic in the song, I relate to the pressure behind it. As a student-athlete, there were times when I felt overwhelmed trying to meet expectations in sports, school, and life. People often see accomplishments, awards, or highlights, but they do not always see the stress, sacrifices, and self-doubt behind them. There were moments when I questioned myself or felt pressure to always perform at a high level. That lyric reminds me that many young people struggle with expectations while trying to figure out who they are. I also connect with Olivia Rodrigo’s song the grudge because it reflects emotional growth and learning to move forward. High school taught me that not every situation will go perfectly. There were difficult losses, disagreements, and moments where I had to mature and let go of negativity. Sports especially taught me that holding onto frustration can hurt both you and your team. Learning how to move forward from disappointment made me mentally stronger and helped me grow as a leader. At the same time, my journey has also been filled with triumphs. Through sports, I learned discipline, teamwork, and confidence. Balancing athletics and academics showed me that success comes from consistency and hard work. Olivia Rodrigo’s music often reflects the ups and downs of growing up, which is why her songs resonate with me. They remind me that challenges are a normal part of life and that growth often comes through difficult experiences. Overall, Olivia Rodrigo’s music connects to my personal journey because her songs honestly express emotions that many people experience while growing up. Whether it is pressure, memories, setbacks, or growth, her lyrics reflect both the struggles and accomplishments that have shaped me throughout high school. Listening to her music reminds me that challenges do not define a person—how they respond to them does.
    Michael Rudometkin Memorial Scholarship
I embody selflessness by trying to support and encourage others whenever I can, whether it is through sports, school, family responsibilities, or everyday situations. I believe selflessness means putting the needs of others before your own at times and understanding that even small acts of kindness can make a big difference in someone’s life. Throughout high school, being involved in basketball, football, and track has helped me learn the value of teamwork, leadership, and helping others succeed instead of focusing only on myself. One example of selflessness that stands out to me happened during basketball season at Clairton High School. One of my younger teammates was struggling with confidence after making mistakes during games and practices. He would get frustrated easily and started doubting himself whenever he missed a shot or turned the ball over. I could tell he was losing confidence, and some players would become impatient with him when he made mistakes. Instead of criticizing him, I decided to encourage him and help him improve. After practices, I stayed in the gym with him to work on drills, shooting, and ball handling. I reminded him that everyone struggles at some point and that improvement only comes through hard work and patience. Over time, I noticed his confidence starting to grow. He became more comfortable during games and practices and eventually became an important contributor to the team. Seeing him improve and believe in himself again showed me how much positive encouragement can impact someone. Another way I have tried to embody selflessness is by helping classmates who struggled academically. Balancing sports and school can be stressful, especially during busy seasons, and I know what it feels like to feel overwhelmed with assignments and responsibilities. Whenever classmates needed help understanding an assignment, studying for a test, or catching up after missing class, I would take time to explain the work or share notes with them. There were times when I stayed after school or spent free time helping friends prepare for quizzes and tests because I wanted them to succeed. I learned that helping others academically is not only about improving grades, but also about giving people confidence in themselves and showing them that they are not alone. Selflessness also plays a role in my family life. I try to help my family however I can because I know how much they support me in everything I do. Whether it is helping around the house, watching younger family members, or simply being there when someone needs support, I try to be dependable. There have been times when I had to put aside my own plans or free time to help my family with responsibilities, but I understand that supporting the people who care about you is important. Those experiences have taught me responsibility, maturity, and the importance of being reliable. Sports taught me that selflessness means putting the team before personal recognition. Although winning a state championship and scoring 1,000 points were important accomplishments, I learned that true leadership comes from helping teammates succeed. I focused on making the right plays, encouraging others, and doing whatever helped the team win. Overall, I embody selflessness by being supportive, dependable, and willing to help others whenever possible. Whether encouraging teammates, helping classmates, or supporting my family, I believe selflessness is about making a positive difference in people’s lives. These experiences have helped me grow into a better leader, teammate, and person, and they will continue to guide me in the future.
    Change of Heart Scholarship
Growing up at Clairton High School, I learned that success is not something that happens overnight. It comes from discipline, sacrifice, teamwork, and believing in yourself even when situations are difficult. As a student-athlete who has played basketball, football, and track, I have experienced both challenges and achievements that shaped the person I am today. Winning a state championship and scoring 1,000 points in basketball were major accomplishments in my life, but the lessons I gained through those experiences are even more valuable. Those positive changes during high school continue to guide me toward my future goals in accounting and professional success. My future plans are centered around building a career in accounting. I became interested in accounting because I enjoy working with numbers, solving problems, and staying organized. I also like the idea of helping businesses and people make smart financial decisions. After graduating high school, I plan to attend college and major in accounting. During college, I want to strengthen my knowledge of finance, business management, and economics while improving my communication and leadership skills. My educational goal is to earn a bachelor’s degree in accounting and eventually work toward becoming a Certified Public Accountant (CPA). Professionally, I hope to build a stable and successful career where I can support myself and my family while also giving back to my community. I want to work for a respected company or possibly own my own accounting business in the future. I understand that accounting requires responsibility, honesty, and attention to detail, and I believe the discipline I developed through sports has prepared me for those expectations. Balancing academics with three sports taught me how to manage my time, stay focused under pressure, and continue working even when I felt tired or overwhelmed. One moment that truly changed my mindset happened during my sophomore year basketball season. At the beginning of the year, I focused mostly on scoring and individual success. I wanted recognition for my talent, but after a tough loss in an important game, my coach reminded the team that talent alone does not win championships. He explained that leadership, accountability, and trust in others mattered just as much. That conversation changed how I approached both sports and school. I started spending more time helping teammates, encouraging others, and putting more effort into my grades. Instead of thinking only about myself, I began thinking about the bigger picture and the impact I could have on others. Winning a state championship and reaching 1,000 career points taught me humility, maturity, and the value of teamwork and hard work. Those lessons continue to guide me as I work toward my future goals. Whether in school, sports, or my future career, I know consistency, discipline, and leadership will help me succeed. High school showed me that my future is bigger than sports. Athletics gave me confidence and life lessons that I will carry with me as I continue working toward success and creating opportunities for myself and others.
