My name is Tarang Patel, and I am a first-generation international graduate student from India, currently pursuing a Master’s in Civil Engineering at San José State University. The name "Tarang" means "wave" in Sanskrit, symbolizing movement, change, and the constant pursuit of progress — values I carry with me in every aspect of my academic and personal journey. Coming from a modest family background, pursuing higher education abroad was a dream that demanded relentless effort, sacrifice, and resilience. My parents, though they never had the chance to attend college themselves, instilled in me the importance of education as a gateway to opportunity and transformation. Being the first in my family to study internationally is both an honor and a responsibility — one that I carry with pride and humility. One of the major obstacles I faced was limited financial resources. Preparing for international education while balancing part-time work and supporting my family was not easy. I often had to make tough choices, including delaying certain goals or working extra hours to save for exams, applications, and travel expenses. Navigating the U.S. education system as an international student has also come with its set of challenges — from cultural adaptation and time zone differences with family, to managing academics, job applications, and basic living needs in a new country. Despite these hurdles, my determination has only strengthened, fueled by the desire to make a meaningful difference in the world through my education. My academic focus is in Construction and Environmental Engineering, and my long-term goal is to design and manage sustainable infrastructure projects that address the urgent challenges of urbanization and climate change. I believe civil engineers play a critical role in shaping resilient, inclusive, and eco-conscious communities. Through my studies, I’ve already had the opportunity to work on a $1.9 billion mixed-use development project and to develop a software tool that digitized bridge inspection data for the Government of Gujarat — a system that streamlined safety reporting and data access. At SJSU, I’ve joined organizations like the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) and the Construction Management Association of America (CMAA), where I serve in leadership roles to bridge the gap between students and industry professionals. I also engage in research that applies remote sensing and AI tools to monitor hydrological extremes — aiming to make data-driven disaster response a reality in developing regions. Receiving the Michael J. Edwards Scholarship would not only ease my financial burden, but also reinforce my mission to lead projects that are not only technically sound, but socially and environmentally responsible. I aspire to be a catalyst for change — someone who uses engineering as a tool to create a safer, greener, and more equitable future. Thank you for considering my application. I am committed to making the most of this opportunity, and I hope to inspire other first-generation students to pursue their dreams without hesitation.
Damodhar Masram Excellence Scholarship for Graduate Students
As a first-generation immigrant, my journey in education and technology has been one of resilience, determination, and unwavering passion. Moving to a new country, adapting to a different culture, and navigating the complexities of higher education as an immigrant have shaped me into the ambitious individual I am today. If awarded the Damodhar Masram Excellence Scholarship, I would honor its values by pushing the boundaries of innovation in my field, mentoring future STEM students, and contributing to the advancement of digital technology in construction engineering. My passion for STEM led me to pursue a bachelor's degree in civil engineering, and now I am furthering my expertise through a master’s degree in construction engineering with a minor in environmental engineering. Throughout my academic journey, I have actively sought opportunities to integrate technology into traditional construction practices. I developed a software application for the Road and Building Department of Gujarat that digitized bridge inspection data, streamlining the process and enhancing safety and efficiency. This project not only reinforced my interest in technology but also demonstrated the power of digital transformation in engineering. The vision behind this scholarship deeply resonates with me, as I believe in using technology to drive meaningful change. My goal is to leverage this opportunity to contribute to the future of construction engineering by integrating digital solutions such as artificial intelligence, blockchain, and remote sensing into project management. These technologies can optimize project efficiency, reduce costs, and improve sustainability in construction practices. If selected, I will use the scholarship to further my research in digital construction management and work toward developing innovative solutions that can revolutionize the industry. Beyond my professional aspirations, I am committed to giving back to the community. As a first-generation immigrant, I understand the challenges of pursuing higher education in a foreign country, from financial struggles to cultural adjustments. I have actively participated in mentoring and networking initiatives, guiding fellow international students and encouraging them to explore STEM opportunities. Winning this scholarship would allow me to extend my outreach further, supporting aspiring engineers and advocating for educational excellence in underrepresented communities. Damodhar Masram’s legacy is one of perseverance, innovation, and the transformative power of knowledge. I strive to embody these values in my academic and professional pursuits. By embracing digital technology in construction and fostering a culture of continuous learning, I aim to leave a lasting impact on the field. This scholarship would not only provide financial support but also empower me to carry forward a legacy that inspires future generations to pursue excellence in STEM. In conclusion, my journey as a first-generation immigrant has instilled in me the values of hard work, adaptability, and innovation. With this scholarship, I will continue to push the boundaries of technology in construction, mentor aspiring students, and contribute to the broader vision of supporting education and innovation. I am determined to make a difference, and with the support of the Damodhar Masram Excellence Scholarship, I will take one step closer to turning my vision into reality.
