      Amber D. Hudson Memorial Scholarship
As a 48-year-old female returning to college to complete my Bachelor's degree in Health Science, I have come to understand that health is influenced by far more than medical treatment alone. Nutrition, education, lifestyle choices, and access to reliable information all play critical roles in preventing disease, supporting recovery, and improving overall quality of life. My goal is to pursue a career in health and wellness, working with patients and their families at cancer centers, where I can help individuals make informed decisions that complement their medical care and improve their overall well-being. Returning to school as a nontraditional student has given me a unique perspective on the importance of lifelong learning. Through my life experiences, I have witnessed how chronic illnesses affect not only patients but also their families. Serious diagnoses often bring fear, uncertainty, and overwhelming amounts of information. During these difficult moments, patients need compassionate professionals who can explain how nutrition, healthy habits, and supportive lifestyle changes can help them maintain strength, improve treatment outcomes, and enhance their quality of life. If I am awarded this scholarship, I will continue building the knowledge and skills needed to educate patients using evidence-based research rather than myths or misinformation. I believe every patient deserves personalized guidance that respects their medical condition, cultural background, financial situation, and personal preferences. Healthy living should never feel out of reach because of limited resources or lack of education. Working in a cancer center, I hope to educate patients and their families about the importance of balanced nutrition before, during, and after treatment. This includes helping them understand how proper nutrition can support the immune system, maintain muscle mass, reduce treatment-related side effects, improve energy levels, and promote healing. I also want to encourage practical lifestyle changes such as physical activity appropriate to each patient's abilities, stress management, adequate sleep, hydration, and smoking cessation when applicable. My goal is to empower patients to become active participants in their own care while working closely with physicians, nurses, dietitians, and other healthcare professionals. In addition to working directly with patients, I hope to develop educational workshops and community outreach programs that make nutrition and wellness information more accessible. These programs could include cooking demonstrations, grocery shopping on a budget, meal planning during treatment, and support groups where patients and caregivers can learn from healthcare professionals and one another. Small, sustainable lifestyle changes can make a meaningful difference, and education has the power to give people confidence during one of the most challenging times in their lives. Completing my Bachelor's degree in Health Science will provide the foundation I need to pursue this meaningful career. As a 48-year-old student, I know it is never too late to follow a passion that serves others. This scholarship would ease the financial burden of completing my education and allow me to focus on preparing for a career dedicated to improving patients' quantity and quality of life. I hope to combine scientific knowledge with compassion, helping individuals and families navigate illness with hope, dignity, and practical tools that support healthier futures.
Henry Respert Alzheimer's and Dementia Awareness Scholarship
Alzheimer's disease and dementia have had a profound impact on my life, shaping not only who I am but also the path I have chosen for my future. As a 48-year-old female student, I had the privilege and responsibility of caring for my father as he battled dementia. Watching someone I loved slowly lose his memories, independence, and sense of self was one of the most heartbreaking experiences of my life. In 2019, my father passed away after his long struggle with this devastating disease. Although his passing left an immeasurable void in my family, it also inspired me to dedicate myself to improving the lives of others affected by dementia. Being a caregiver taught me lessons that no textbook ever could. I witnessed firsthand the emotional, physical, and financial toll dementia places not only on the individual but also on family members who become caregivers. Every day brought new challenges, from helping my father with simple daily tasks to providing reassurance during moments of confusion and fear. It required patience, compassion, and resilience, especially as I watched his personality gradually change. One of the hardest parts was realizing that while he sometimes no longer recognized those around him, our love for him never changed. Through this experience, I learned the importance of empathy and the value of treating every person with dignity, regardless of their condition. Dementia may affect memory and cognitive abilities, but it does not diminish a person's humanity. I also gained a deep appreciation for healthcare professionals, researchers, and caregivers who dedicate their lives to improving the quality of life for patients and their families. Their compassion and commitment gave my family comfort during an incredibly difficult time. My father's journey inspired me to return to college and complete my Bachelor's degree in Health Science. As a nontraditional student, I understand that education is never limited by age. My goal is to pursue research focused on dementia and Alzheimer's disease, contributing to studies that improve prevention, treatment, early diagnosis, and support for patients and caregivers. I want to be part of the scientific community working toward breakthroughs that may one day spare other families the pain that mine experienced. In addition to conducting research, I hope to advocate for greater awareness of dementia and the importance of caregiver support. Families often face these challenges feeling isolated and overwhelmed. I want to help develop educational programs and resources that empower caregivers with knowledge, emotional support, and practical tools to navigate this difficult journey. Although losing my father was one of the greatest hardships I have ever faced, his life continues to inspire my purpose. His courage throughout his illness, along with the love my family shared while caring for him, strengthened my determination to make a meaningful difference. By completing my education and pursuing dementia research, I hope to honor his memory while contributing to advances that improve the lives of countless individuals and families affected by Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia. His legacy is the reason I am committed to transforming personal loss into hope, knowledge, and compassionate service for others.
Debra S. Jackson New Horizons Scholarship
My journey to higher education has been anything but traditional. As a 48-year-old female student, I have learned that life does not always follow the path we imagine. Along the way, I have balanced work, family responsibilities, financial challenges, and raising my child, often putting my own educational goals on hold to provide stability for my family. Although those sacrifices delayed my academic journey, they never diminished my desire to earn a college degree or my passion for making a difference in the lives of others. Today, I am determined to complete my Bachelor's degree in Health Science and pursue a career focused on women's health research. The experiences I have faced throughout my life have shaped my values of perseverance, compassion, and service. Over the years, I have worked in roles that allowed me to help people during important moments in their lives. These experiences strengthened my belief that healthcare professionals and researchers have the ability to improve lives through education, advocacy, and innovation. They also inspired me to return to school with a renewed sense of purpose and a clear vision for my future. My interest in women's health research comes from recognizing the unique health challenges women face throughout their lives. Too often, women experience disparities in healthcare, delayed diagnoses, or limited access to information and resources. I want to contribute to research that advances women's health, improves prevention and treatment strategies, and helps ensure that women from all backgrounds receive equitable, evidence-based care. I believe that scientific research has the power to improve not only individual lives but entire communities. Education is the foundation that will allow me to achieve these goals. Completing my Bachelor's degree in Health Science will provide me with the scientific knowledge, research skills, and critical thinking abilities necessary to continue my education and pursue opportunities in women's health research. I also hope to mentor and encourage other adult learners, especially women who may believe they are too old or have faced too many obstacles to return to school. I want my journey to demonstrate that determination and lifelong learning can overcome even the greatest challenges. Receiving this scholarship would have a meaningful impact on my ability to achieve my goals. As a nontraditional student balancing financial responsibilities, the cost of higher education remains one of my greatest challenges. Scholarship support would reduce the financial burden of tuition and educational expenses, allowing me to focus more fully on my studies and academic success. I believe that education is an investment not only in myself but also in my community. By completing my degree and pursuing women's health research, I hope to contribute to discoveries that improve healthcare outcomes, promote health equity, and empower women to make informed decisions about their health. This scholarship would help turn a lifelong dream into reality while allowing me to create a lasting, positive impact for future generations.
      WCEJ Thornton Foundation Low-Income Scholarship
As a 48-year-old low-income student, pursuing higher education is more than a personal achievement—it is an opportunity to change the course of my future and create a better life for my family. Returning to college at this stage in my life has required determination, sacrifice, and resilience. While balancing financial responsibilities and raising my child, I have remained committed to completing my education because I know that earning my Bachelor's degree in Health Science will open doors to meaningful career opportunities and long-term financial stability. My educational journey has not followed a traditional path. Life presented challenges that required me to place my family's needs before my own educational goals. Even so, I never lost sight of my dream of earning a bachelor's degree. Returning to school has reminded me that learning has no age limit and that perseverance can overcome obstacles. Every class I complete brings me one step closer to achieving a goal I have worked toward for many years. Higher education will equip me with the knowledge, critical thinking skills, and professional training needed to advance in the healthcare field. I am passionate about helping others, and I want to build a career where I can improve the health and well-being of individuals and families. A Bachelor's degree in Health Science will provide the foundation to pursue leadership opportunities, contribute to healthcare organizations, and continue growing professionally while making a meaningful difference in the lives of others. I also hope to create a positive impact beyond my career. As an adult learner, I want to inspire others who believe they have missed their chance to pursue higher education. I especially hope to encourage single parents and nontraditional students to believe that it is never too late to invest in themselves. I want my child to see firsthand that hard work, determination, and education can overcome even the most difficult circumstances. Because I come from a low-income background, receiving financial assistance would relieve some of the burden of tuition and educational expenses, allowing me to focus more fully on my studies and academic success. This support would not simply help me earn a degree—it would help me build a stronger future for my family and position me to give back to my community. My goal is to use my education, experience, and compassion to improve the lives of others while demonstrating that resilience and lifelong learning can create opportunities at any stage of life. Completing my Bachelor's degree in Health Science is not only an investment in my future but also an investment in the people and communities I hope to serve for years to come.
      Kaprieasha Tyler Healthcare Scholarship
As a 48-year-old single parent, returning to college has been both a personal goal and a significant challenge. Raising a child on my own has required me to balance work, parenting, and financial responsibilities while continuing to pursue my education. There have been times when I had to put my academic goals on hold so I could provide stability and support for my family. Although the journey has not been easy, these experiences have strengthened my determination, resilience, and commitment to achieving my educational goals. Being a single parent has taught me the importance of perseverance, time management, and setting a positive example for my child. I want my child to see that it is never too late to pursue a dream or invest in your future. Returning to college is not just about earning a degree—it is about creating better opportunities for my family and showing my child the value of education, hard work, and determination. I am currently working toward completing my Bachelor's degree in Health Science. I chose this field because I have a passion for helping others and improving the quality of care within the healthcare industry. Throughout my career, I have gained valuable experience serving people in different capacities, and earning this degree will allow me to expand my knowledge, qualify for greater career opportunities, and make an even greater impact in the lives of those I serve. Receiving financial assistance would help ease the burden of tuition and educational expenses, allowing me to focus more on my studies while continuing to meet the needs of my family. As a nontraditional student, I understand the sacrifices required to return to school, but I also know the rewards will be life-changing.
