Bio

My career goal is to become a nurse practitioner in the immunology/allergy specialty. I have always had a passion for science and medicine so this is the profession I know that I can excel in. There is a shortage of medical providers right now all across the United States and those that are in the profession have seemed to polarize to urban areas. I grew up in rural Eastern Oregon and the area I live in suffers from a lack of access to healthcare, particularly in diverse medical specialties like immunology/allergy. This is an issue that has affected me personally so I am excited to be closer to my career goal to better address these health disparities and inequities for rural communities that are often overlooked or underserved. In addition to this reason, immunology/allergy is in the top 10 medical specialties with fewest practicing clinicians and while I may be only one person, it would still be a contribution to filling this gap.

    Sara Jane Memorial Scholarship
I plan to make my education very impactful by helping to be part of the solution for the widespread healthcare workers shortage. Completing my nursing education and obtaining my license will allow me to exercise my due diligence in contributing to the solution of this issue by maintaining a more healthy community while I prepare for my end career goal as a nurse practitioner. I am particularly inspired to advance my career in healthcare as there is a shortage of medical providers right now all across the United States and those that are in the profession have seemed to polarize to urban areas, leaving rural areas unable to meet high demand healthcare needs. I grew up in rural Eastern Oregon which suffers from a lack of access to healthcare, particularly in diverse medical specialties like immunology/allergy. This is an issue that has affected me personally so I am excited to be closer to my career goal to better address these health disparities and inequities for the underserved rural area I chose to practice. I have an excellent and diverse background in healthcare already, so I am excited to apply this knowledge to my nursing education at ISU, building additional knowledge and skills that will elevate the level of care that I provide to my patients. I have been privileged to have a multitude of shadowing and work experience in numerous medical specialties and settings. When I graduated college in 2020 with my bachelors degree in molecular biology, I began a master's program in immunology, and switched to working full time in rheumatology. The COVID-19 pandemic arose so I worked Monday through Friday in rheumatology, but also worked overtime in neurology on Saturday mornings, and urgent care on Saturday afternoons and Sundays. In 2021, I switched careers to public health, gaining experience with communicable disease, environmental, and community health. In addition to work experience, in 2018, I earned 8 months of shadowing experience in emergency medicine, 3 months in multiple surgical specialties, and participated in the Atlantis Project, shadowing for 2 weeks at Attikon General Hospital in Athens, Greece. Collectively, these experiences helped me develop skills in adaptability, resilience, creative and critical thinking, implementation of a wide array of evidence based practices, understanding a profuse number of disease pathologies and associated treatments, evaluation of ethical situations, cultural competence, and promotion of health equity. Additionally, I gained an abundance of experience with clinical skills and technology including use of several EMR systems, EKGs, EMG/NCS, NeuroTrax & BAER/VER testing, phlebotomy, and IV equipment, among many others. Professionally, I have served as the PPE Coordinator for Grande Ronde Hospital throughout my time there during the COVID-19 pandemic. At Umatilla County Public Health, I was elected to serve on the Quality Improvement Council. In addition to these roles, I was awarded the Umatilla County Employee Excellence Award in 2024 for my contribution to fostering an STD at-home testing kit program, facilitation of numerous STD testing events and vaccine events, and for making history as the first UCo Health employee to present at the Oregon Epidemiologist Conference. I do believe that I am an exceptional candidate for the Sara Jane Memorial Scholarship due to my enthusiasm and commitment to the healthcare field and its many specialties, as well as in scientific research which my bachelors in molecular biology and masters in immunology can attest to. I will represent the award well as my great grades have demonstrated and my wholeheartedness to make an impact in each community that I am a part of. I appreciate your time and consideration for this award.
