Growing up, I watched my parents work tirelessly to provide a better life for me, despite the hardships they faced early in life. My mother lost both of her parents before the age of twelve, and my father lost his father at a young age and was raised by his grandparents. Neither of them had the privilege or the opportunity to attend college, not because they lacked intelligence or ambition, but because life’s circumstances made survival their top priority. Their resilience taught me the value of hard work and sacrifice, and it also motivated me to aim higher—to build a future where struggle isn’t the norm, but success and stability are.
For me, obtaining a degree in nursing represents far more than just personal achievement. It symbolizes breaking generational barriers and rewriting the narrative for my family. My parents may not have had the chance to attend college, but their sacrifices have given me the foundation to do what they could not. Becoming the first in my family to earn a bachelor’s degree—and the first to become a registered nurse—would not only fulfill one of my biggest dreams, but also create a legacy that future generations can build upon. My education will become a bridge that connects my family’s past struggles to our future opportunities.
My mother has been one of my biggest inspirations in choosing this career path. She has worked for many years as a Certified Nursing Assistant, and I have witnessed firsthand the love, compassion, and dedication she gives to her patients. No matter how tired she was or how demanding her shifts became, she always treated others with kindness and respect. Watching her pour her heart into caring for others made me realize that nursing is not just a job—it’s a calling. Her example taught me that caring for others can change lives in ways that go beyond medicine; it can bring comfort, hope, and dignity to people when they need it most.
Through nursing, I hope to follow in her footsteps, but also take it a step further. Earning my degree will allow me to not only help patients on a deeper medical level, but also to help my family move toward a more stable and prosperous future. I want to be able to give my parents the peace of mind they’ve earned after years of sacrifice. I want my younger relatives to see that higher education is possible, that they too can pursue their dreams and achieve them. My journey will serve as proof that where you start in life does not determine where you finish.
Ultimately, obtaining this degree means creating generational change. It means ending cycles of financial hardship and opening doors that were once closed to my family. It means transforming pain into purpose and struggle into success. My nursing degree will not just represent my personal growth—it will represent a new beginning for my family, one rooted in education, compassion, and hope for the generations that come after me.
