Graphic design is more than just an artistic pursuit for me; it’s a profound outlet for my love of art and a necessary escape during one of the most challenging periods of my life. As a single mother of six, I found myself relentlessly searching for a creative release when my son was diagnosed with a rare kidney disease. This search for solace coincidentally led me to graphic design. Faced with the need to design a book cover and the constraints of a tight budget, I took matters into my own hands. I enrolled in a Photoshop course on Udemy, determined to tackle the project myself. What started as a small, tentative step into the world of digital art unknowingly opened the door to a new realm of possibilities and ignited a burning passion for graphic design. The initial course on Photoshop was just the beginning. Hungry to learn more, I expanded my skills into Adobe Illustrator, delving into vector graphics and digital illustration. Each new tool and technique I mastered brought with it a new set of challenges and triumphs, from understanding the nuances of layer blending to creating seamless patterns. Creating flyers for friends and family soon turned into paid projects, allowing me to contribute to my family’s finances while honing my craft. This practical application of my skills reinforced my love for graphic design and motivated me to explore deeper concepts such as color theory, the psychology of shapes, and the narrative power of visual composition. Graphic design became my voice during the tumultuous times of hospital visits, treatments, and my son’s kidney transplant. Through my designs, I could express emotions that were too complex for words—conveying hope, resilience, and the chaos of emotions that come with caring for a sick child. Each project reflected a piece of my journey, transforming personal pain into visual metaphors of strength and perseverance. This journey through graphic design has taught me to find beauty in complexity and to appreciate the subtle interplay of color and form in everyday life. It has shaped my perspective, enabling me to see challenges not as obstacles but as opportunities for creativity and growth. My aspiration is to extend this transformative power of graphic design to other women facing similar challenges—helping them to find a fulfilling path that also offers financial empowerment. By teaching them the skills of graphic design, I hope to provide an outlet for their struggles and a platform for their voices. In conclusion, my passion for graphic design has been a sanctuary and a source of strength through the toughest times. It has enabled me to grow, to love the artistic side of myself more deeply, and to discover resilience I never knew I had. Graphic design has not just changed the way I see the world; it has transformed how I live in it. I am profoundly grateful for the craft and the gift of design, which has shown me the world anew, painted in the vibrant hues of possibility and hope.
