Bio

Hello, I'm Tammie! While currently a high school student, my passion lies in pursuing a future in medicine as a dermatologist. I am deeply intrigued by the profound impact our skin's physical characteristics can have on our confidence and self-esteem. When I'm not engrossed in my studies, I find solace in the world of literature, particularly memoirs and historical books. Another creative outlet that captivates me is sewing, where I enjoy crafting new clothes. With an insatiable curiosity, I constantly seek to expand my knowledge across a broad range of subjects, from unraveling the intricacies of our world to understanding the fascinating microscopic organisms that coexist with humans. History, in particular, fascinates me as I believe that a thorough understanding of the past is crucial for shaping a prosperous future.

      GUTS- Olivia Rodrigo Fan Scholarship
The lyric "When am I gonna stop being great for my age and just start being good?" from Olivia Rodrigo's song strikes a deep chord within my complex journey of adolescence. It's a sentiment that echoes the profound pressures, both internal and external, that often accompany these formative years. As a teenager, this lyric felt as though Olivia reached into the depths of my inner turmoil and gave voice to the unspoken anxieties that often plagued my high school years. Adolescence is when we're expected to excel, to stand out: to be "great" in everything we do. Whether it's the constant academic competition, the pressure to excel in sports and clubs, or the unspoken yet palpable desire to fit in, there's an ever-present demand for greatness. We're urged to be exceptional not just for ourselves but for everyone around us. It's like we're constantly on stage, performing in a never-ending talent show. This pursuit of greatness is, in many ways, a double-edged sword. On one hand, it fuels ambition and pushes us to achieve more than we thought possible. But on the other hand, it can lead to crippling anxiety, a fear of failure, and a gnawing sense of inadequacy. We find ourselves in an endless cycle of comparison, measuring our accomplishments against those of our peers, and wondering when we'll finally transition from being "great for our age" to simply being "good." This lyric captures the raw and relentless nature of this internal struggle. It's not just about seeking external validation or recognition; it's about the yearning to reconcile our own self-worth. It highlights the profound challenge of finding our own identities amidst the cacophony of societal expectations. Adolescence, after all, is a tumultuous journey of self-discovery, where we grapple with questions of who we are and what we're meant to be. As I get ready to turn 18 in a couple of months, this lyric becomes even more pertinent. It touches upon the daunting transition I now face as I realize that the standards I've set for myself may not be sustainable in the long run. Some nights as I lie in bed, stressed out over my classes, I question whether my relentless pursuit of greatness during my teenage years would translate into success in the adult world. What if it all means nothing? As I get ready to turn 18 in a couple of months, I find myself reflecting on the daunting transition I now face. The standards I've set for myself throughout my teenage years may not be sustainable in the long run. Some nights as I lie in bed, stressed out over my classes, I question whether my relentless pursuit of greatness would translate into success in the adult world. What if it all means nothing? But then, I remind myself that I don't have to be great all the time; it's perfectly acceptable to just be good. I can make mistakes, learn from them, and grow at my own pace. Life is not solely about reaching unattainable success; it's also about the journey and the progress I make along the way. So, as I step into adulthood, I'll embrace the idea that being good is more than enough. I'll strive to become the best version of myself but also allow myself the space to learn, grow, and be content with who I am at this moment. Because sometimes, being good is truly great in its own way.
Fall Favs: A Starbucks Stan Scholarship
I was one of those people who considered fall Starbucks drinks to be the embodiment of all things "basic." I couldn't help but roll my eyes at the seasonal frenzy that surrounded pumpkin spice lattes and other autumnal offerings. It seemed like everyone and their dog was rushing to their nearest Starbucks at the first hint of cooler weather, eagerly ordering their pumpkin spice latte and sharing obligatory selfies with those unmistakable green cups. To me, it all felt a bit too predictable, like following the herd. As I sipped my usual black coffee during those early autumn days, I couldn't help but feel a twinge of superiority, as if my choice of beverage made me somehow immune to the trends. I dismissed the fall offerings as nothing more than marketing gimmicks, designed to capitalize on people's yearning for all things cozy and seasonal. Yet, life has a funny way of challenging our preconceived notions. It was during one chilly October afternoon, while waiting for a friend at Starbucks, that I decided to venture beyond my comfort zone. With a hint of curiosity and a dash of irony, I ordered a pumpkin spice latte. I expected nothing more than a fleeting experience of conformity, a brief detour from my usual routine. As the barista handed me the steaming cup, I couldn't ignore the comforting aroma that wafted up to greet me. The first sip was an unexpected revelation. The creamy blend of espresso, warm spices, and subtle pumpkin flavor created a symphony on my taste buds. It was a taste of autumn itself, like a sip of the season's coziness. Surprisingly, I found myself drawn to that pumpkin spice latte more often than I had anticipated. It became my companion during long study sessions, offering a sweet respite from the academic grind. It accompanied me on crisp, sunlit walks through the park, its warmth mirroring the golden hues of the leaves around me. It was the perfect accompaniment to those moments when I wanted to indulge in a bit of self-care and comfort. As I continued to enjoy fall-inspired drinks, I realized that there was nothing "basic" about embracing the pleasures of the season. It wasn't about conformity or following trends; it was about appreciating the simple joys that autumn brought. I began to understand that, just as the leaves changed their colors and the air turned brisk, it was okay for me to change my perspective and embrace the delicious essence of fall that pumpkin spice lattes offered. In the end, I learned that sometimes, the most basic things are basic for a reason—they bring comfort, nostalgia, and a sense of belonging. So, here I am, no longer judging the "basic" fall Starbucks drinks, but rather savoring the beauty and warmth they add to my life during this season of change and transformation.

      Netflix and Scholarships!
If you scroll through Netflix’s list of teen dramas, you might realize that many shows are filled with clichés that are exaggerated for dramatic effect. They do not feel genuine and often skip over important issues that teen audiences go through in their daily lives. This is certainly not the case for the Swedish Netflix drama "Young Royals". Even though the show has a unique premise, it expertly and genuinely tackles a range of teen concerns, from LGBT relationships to disabilities to immigration and addiction. At a time when the future seems uncertain for teens around the world, a show with authenticity is needed to help teen audiences feel like they are not alone – that they are being represented and their voices are being heard. "Young Royals" is about Prince Wilhelm, who is forced to attend a strict boarding school after he causes trouble at a nightclub. At the boarding school, Wilhelm encounters a diverse group of students from different backgrounds and falls in love with Simon, an outcast and the son of an immigrant mother. Since Wilhelm is a prince, politics are involved in the plot, and there comes a point when he must choose between love and his duty. Although "Young Royals" does portray some tropes, it is done tastefully without feeling like a cliché. At its core, the series is a coming-out story, capturing the tender and authentic young love between Wilhelm and Simon. Despite the story mainly revolving around Simon and Wilhelm, all the characters we meet have their own complex and compelling arcs. As a prince, Wilhelm often feels like he is walking on eggshells around other people. It is clear that some people only pay attention to him because he has royal blood. He is attracted to Simon because Simon feels real to him and not “fake” like the others. Meanwhile, Simon has to deal with an alcoholic father and the pressures of fitting into a community that is not welcoming to him, until Wilhelm comes along. August, Wilhelm’s cousin, is the perfect poster boy for his school and his family, but people do not realize that he is slowly crumbling under the pressure. He resorts to drugs and soon becomes addicted – to the extent that he seeks out Sara to ask for her medication. Sara and Felice form an unlikely bond that is on the cusp of becoming something more. All the characters have relatable storylines and it is hard for the audience to not get attached to them. Furthermore, the love story in "Young Royals" is realistic and it truly feels like we are watching love blossom naturally between the two main characters. There is no exaggerated gesture of love or unrealistic display of their affection. Simon and Wilhelm simply fall in love with stolen glances and initially awkward conversations and interactions: in the way that many young couples begin their love story. Their chemistry bleeds through the screen and will have the audience rooting for them. With its compelling premise and complex characters, Young Royals is definitely worth a watch!

“Okay class, today we’re going to learn how to simplify logs!” Mrs. Nelson announced as we walked into her 5th-period pre-calc class. While most of the class groaned, I grinned happily, ready to put my brain to work. As we got our worksheets, my find raced to find the solution to the questions, sometimes even working backward in order to find the correct answer. Finishing the worksheet quickly, I handed it to Mrs. Nelson. “I liked you solved #3. I would’ve never thought of doing it that way,” Mrs. Nelson commented, as she checked my work. As Mrs. Nelson's words echoed in my mind, I couldn't help but feel a surge of pride and excitement. The fact that my approach to solving the problem had surprised even my knowledgeable teacher made me realize the true beauty of mathematics. It wasn't just about finding the right answer; it was about the journey, the exploration, and the countless paths we could take to reach that solution. Mathematics is a vast landscape waiting to be discovered, with each problem presenting an opportunity to explore new territories of thought. There was no one-size-fits-all approach, no predetermined path to follow. It was a realm where creativity and critical thinking converged, where I could be the captain, free to chart my own course through the complexities of numbers and equations. Mathematics was a universal language, transcending cultural barriers and time. It had a rich history, woven into the fabric of human civilization, driving advancements in science, technology, and engineering. From the ancient mathematicians who paved the way to the modern geniuses who revolutionized our understanding, the impact of math was undeniable. Furthermore, mathematics was not confined to the realm of academics. Its principles could be found in art, music, architecture, and nature itself. The Fibonacci sequence, the Golden Ratio, and fractals were just a few examples of how mathematical concepts manifested in the world around us, shaping our aesthetic preferences and our understanding of beauty. I understood that math was not just a subject to be conquered, but a lifelong companion, a way of thinking that could be applied to any problem, be it abstract or practical. I knew that each new concept I encountered, each problem I solved, and each "aha!" moment I experienced would only deepen my love for math. It was a love affair that would last a lifetime, an endless source of inspiration and intellectual fulfillment. As I left Mrs. Nelson's class that day, I knew that math would always be my faithful companion, guiding me through the challenges and mysteries that lay ahead. And with a smile on my face, I eagerly embraced the boundless possibilities and infinite beauty that mathematics had to offer.

      Book Lovers Scholarship
The first time I ever encountered Trevor Noah was during my Human Geography class when my teacher decided to show an episode of 'The Daily Show' to illustrate the impact of gentrification. Intrigued by his humor and unique perspective as the show's host, I was compelled to explore more of his work beyond the classroom. That's when I stumbled upon his memoir, 'Born a Crime: Stories from a South African Childhood,' and decided to give it a read. Despite its three-hundred-page length, I devoured the book in less than a day. It captivated me with its engaging storytelling, infused with humor, honesty, and introspection. In his memoir, Trevor Noah draws readers into his life, transcending the physical distance that separated us. I found myself laughing along with him as he recounted his misadventures with his friend Teddy, and shedding tears as he shared the heartbreak of losing his beloved dog, Fufi. Through his storytelling, he skillfully weaves themes of familial love, enabling readers to connect with his experiences. Although the backdrop of apartheid looms throughout the narrative, Trevor does not explicitly delve into political discussions. Instead, he presents the effects of apartheid as part of his daily life, gradually unraveling his understanding of it as he grows older. What makes Trevor's memoir remarkable is his ability to prioritize personal anecdotes and experiences, allowing readers to see beyond the oppressive system of apartheid. While apartheid has shaped his life, it does not occupy the central stage in his storytelling. Instead, he highlights the universal aspects of childhood, friendship, and love. By doing so, Trevor creates a relatable and accessible narrative that resonates with readers from diverse backgrounds, regardless of their familiarity with South African history. 'Born a Crime' has the power to foster empathy, compassion, and a shared sense of responsibility toward creating a more inclusive and equitable world. Through Trevor Noah's storytelling prowess, readers are reminded that our commonalities are far more profound than our differences and that by understanding and appreciating each other's unique journeys, we can build bridges of understanding and forge a brighter future together.
Harry Potter and the Sorting Hat Scholarship
“You enter an enchanted garden. What would you be most curious to examine first?” Easy enough. ‘The bubbling pool, in the depths of which something luminous is swirling’ was my choice. “Which would you rather be?” I thought about that question for a bit. After looking at all the choices, I clicked on ‘praised.’ “Dawn or Dusk?” Without a second though, I clicked ‘dusk,’ watching eagerly as Pottermore computed my answers. Finally, the screen filled with blue, as the words “Congratulations on being sorted into Ravenclaw” scrolled across the screen. Wait, What? That can’t be right. I’m a Gryffindor. I was brave and bold. Just like Harry, Hermione, and Ron. Scoffing at the false results, I exited the website. Yet I couldn't shake off the feeling of intrigue. Despite my certainty about my house, there was a small spark of interest in exploring the world of Ravenclaw and discovering what it had to offer. In the days that followed, I couldn't help but wonder about the qualities associated with Ravenclaw House. I found myself reading about the few Ravenclaw students in the Harry Potter world and their remarkable intelligence, creativity, and love for learning. The more I read, the more I realized that these were qualities I possessed as well, albeit ones that I may not have fully embraced. My insatiable hunger for knowledge became increasingly apparent. I found myself eagerly absorbing information and seeking out opportunities to learn in various aspects of my life. Whether it was actively participating in class discussions, conducting independent research, or watching documentaries late into the night, my thirst for knowledge seemed insatiable. My enthusiasm for learning extended beyond the confines of traditional subjects, as you found yourself drawn to diverse topics such as fashion, history, and outer space. My range of interests and my dedication to exploring them were true Ravenclaw behavior. Not only did I possess a genuine passion for learning, but I also exhibited a deep appreciation for the written word. The presence of a book in my hand became a constant companion, a gateway to new worlds and experiences. My reading choices spanned a wide range of genres, showcasing my openness to different perspectives and my eagerness to explore the vast realm of literature. Just like Ravenclaws who valued the power of knowledge contained within books, I found solace, inspiration, and endless fascination within their pages. I also discovered that my creativity played a significant role in my life. Whether it was through expressing myself in writing fanfiction or starring in a play that I had written, my imaginative mind constantly sought innovative solutions and fresh perspectives, aligning perfectly with the inventive and original thinking that Ravenclaws were known to possess. As I reflected on these aspects of myself, I realized that while bravery and boldness were indeed traits I possess, knowledge was what I valued. Returning to the website, I took the Pottermore quiz once more, this time reflecting on the qualities I had previously overlooked. I considered the bubbling pool, the luminous swirling depths symbolizing my thirst for knowledge and the unexplored mysteries of the world. I choose to be praised, recognizing the importance of recognition and appreciation for my efforts. And when asked to choose between dawn and dusk, I chose dusk: appreciating the tranquility and introspection it brought. With bated breath, I waited for the sorting result to appear on the screen once again. And there it was the familiar blue background, but this time the words across the screen brought joy, "Congratulations on being sorted into Ravenclaw."
      Taylor Swift ‘1989’ Fan Scholarship
With the windows rolled down, the wind harmonized with the melody of "Wildest Dreams" blasting from my speakers. He said, "Let's get out of this town," and so I did. Staring at the sunset, I shouted the lyrics with all my heart, living in that "Wildest Dream" where everything was just right. I drove out of the city, away from the crowds, letting the road take me- “Slow down!” my dad shouted. Slamming on my brakes, I was taken out of the fantasy I had built in my mind. I wasn’t driving out of the city with freedom flowing through my hair. The windows were up. It was twelve in the afternoon, and I was sixteen, learning how to drive with my dad sitting shotgun. Yet the lyrics of “Wildest Dreams” had taken me to another world. A world in which I was a 50s Hollywood star tangling with a boy who could burn it all down. Growing up, Taylor Swift didn’t have the biggest influence on my life. Sure, I’d listened to her hits on the radio and watched her music videos whenever they came up on my Youtube feed, but I wasn’t a die-hard swiftie. Taylor had catchy tunes, but I couldn’t relate to the themes of love and heartbreak that took center stage in her music. The only crush I had was on a boy in 3rd grade that moved away the very next year. I didn’t understand the hype of Taylor Swift until my freshman year of high school. At this time, my school was partially online due to COVID. Going to a new school where many of my friends had opted to do online classes, I was enveloped in a world of solitude. I didn’t have anyone to talk to during lunch or on the bus ride home, so I turned to the one thing that could give me comfort: music. With earbuds in, I opened Spotify and on a whim, decided to listen to the ‘1989’ album. Clicking shuffle, my ears were filled with the steady thumps of Taylor’s heartbeat as “Wildest Dreams” began to play. I listened intently to how Taylor described a tumultuous relationship she knew from the start was destined to end in flames, and how she hoped her lover would still remember her even in the aftermath. Closing my eyes and leaning my head against the bus window, I became Taylor. I was the Taylor staring at the sunset. I was the Taylor standing in a nice dress. Despite never falling in love, Taylor’s descriptive storytelling gave me an opportunity to experience its all-consuming passion. In that moment, I was in love with Taylor’s words, with her voice, but most of all, in love with her story. Captivated, I rapidly consumed the rest of her repertoire. Jamming out to “Shake It Off” and sobbing to “Clean,” Taylor gave me a friend to laugh, cry, and make memories with. She was my escape, introducing me to a world in which I could be the damsel, hero, and villain. Now, as a seasoned Swiftie who has experienced the release of “Fearless (TV)” “Red (TV)”, “Midnights,” and “Speak Now (TV),” I’m in awe at the range of experiences that Taylor is able to convey. Taylor is THE music industry, but she is also the friend who will laugh at your dumb jokes. As I grow and broaden my experiences, Taylor will be there to guide me through all of life's complicated emotions. “Wildest Dreams” might have been my catalyst, but it is her music and fans that kept me enchanted.

I've never been good at talking with others. I tend to stammer, rush my words, or use an excessive amount of "umms" and "uhh." Therefore, when I made the bold move of signing up as a tutor for Schoolhouse's virtual SAT peer tutoring program, I shocked not only my mother but also myself. However, through my journey as a tutor, I have come to embody selflessness by dedicating myself to helping others overcome their challenges. My transformation from a hesitant individual plagued by self-doubt to a confident and passionate teacher has been fueled by the genuine desire to make a positive impact on the lives of those in need. My first significant experience occurred when I signed up as a tutor for Schoolhouse's virtual SAT peer tutoring program. Despite my personal struggles with communication, I stepped out of my comfort zone and committed to supporting students in their SAT preparation. Recognizing the importance of my role, I diligently prepared for each session, aiming to provide the best possible guidance. During the tutoring sessions, I encountered learners with diverse needs and learning styles. Instead of sticking to a rigid script, I adapted my teaching approach to suit each individual. By adding my own personal spin to the curriculum and incorporating real-life examples, I engaged my learners and made complex grammar rules more relatable and understandable. Witnessing their progress and witnessing their triumphs became my own source of fulfillment. These sessions revealed to me my passion for helping others through teaching. I started to seek out more opportunities to help others through communication and problem-solving. Volunteering as a teaching assistant at Van Houston Academy over the last two summers allowed me to further hone my skills in accommodating diverse audiences. Assigned to work with younger students, I faced new challenges that required patience and creativity. Adapting my teaching style to suit their age group, I sought simple and captivating methods to convey complex concepts effectively. An example that stands out is when I encountered a younger student struggling with understanding the ones, tens, and hundreds place value. Instead of resorting to standard teaching methods, I approached the problem with empathy and creativity. I developed a game using blocks as manipulatives to illustrate the concept. This interactive approach not only fostered the student's understanding but also nurtured their passion for learning. Witnessing their newfound enthusiasm and progress filled me with a profound sense of fulfillment. These experiences have taught me that selflessness entails putting the needs of others above one's own fears and insecurities. By actively seeking opportunities to help and empower others, I have developed a genuine passion for teaching and problem-solving. Whether it be adapting my teaching methods to suit individual learners, devising creative approaches to engage younger students, or investing time and effort to support a peer's growth, I consistently strive to make a positive impact. Through my journey as a tutor and volunteer, I have come to realize that selflessness is not just about altruism but also about personal growth. Each experience has reinforced my belief that by embracing selflessness, I can unlock my true potential while making a meaningful difference in the lives of others.

      McClendon Leadership Award
Leadership, traditionally defined as guiding a group or organization, extends far beyond formal roles and titles. It transcends boundaries and encompasses a multitude of forms. However, leadership is not confined to a select few; it is a capacity that resides within everyone. We often underestimate the leadership we practice in our daily lives, as it is not always grandiose or recognizable. True leadership is rooted in our actions, which speak volumes and shape the world around us. Contrary to popular belief, leadership is not solely dependent on a few pivotal decisions or occupying a prominent position. It is not about being the loudest voice in the room or having an outgoing personality. Instead, leadership emanates from the consistent choices we make and the values we uphold daily. Whether it is diligently attending school, completing assignments promptly, or extending a helping hand to friends, these actions reflect leadership within our communities, even if they go unnoticed. By committing to leadership in our everyday routines, we contribute to a positive status quo, inspiring collective improvement and fostering community growth. Furthermore, leadership is not confined to the superficial qualities of one's character. It is not solely determined by extroverted traits that may be more readily accepted or adaptable to societal expectations. Instead, true leadership stems from the essence of our being, from our character, beliefs, and desires. It is the drive and vision behind our actions that render us worthy leaders. Leadership is not an innate trait that some are born with and others lack; it is a skill that we learn, develop, and refine throughout our lives. As we mature, we continuously mold and reshape our leadership abilities, evolving as individuals and expanding our capacity to make a positive impact. It is vital to recognize that not everyone fits into the conventional definition of leadership. However, this does not diminish their leadership potential. As long as we set an example for others, inspire change, and build character, we are embodying the fundamental essence of leadership. Our influence may not be measured by grand gestures or public recognition but by the meaningful connections we forge and the positive impact we exert on those around us. While leadership change comes in all different shapes and sizes, Effort remains at its core. It is the unwavering commitment to personal growth, the pursuit of excellence, and the dedication to making a difference. Leadership is not passive; it requires continuous work and an unwavering belief in the power of one's actions. By exerting Effort, we shape our character, strengthen our abilities, and inspire others to follow suit. Effort is the cornerstone of leadership, the driving force that propels us to initiate positive change and create a better world. In conclusion, leadership extends beyond formal roles and titles, transcending societal expectations. It is not limited to a select few but exists within each of us. Leadership is built upon our actions, our character, and our unwavering Effort to make a difference. By embracing our unique qualities, setting an example, and committing to personal growth, we become catalysts for positive change. As we continue to redefine and cultivate leadership within ourselves, we contribute to a world where collective progress and community betterment are not the exception but the norm.
