Bio

Hello, My name is Tamara Moore. I am from a small town in North Carolina called Riegelwood. I am a 24-year-old single mom who works full-time. Originally, I planned to move to Durham, NC but have decided to remain in my home in a safer and more affordable environment. It will be an hour's commute one way each day to and from campus. I don’t have the option of living on campus because I have a child, and I also will have to quit my full-time time job to attend school in Durham. I have had to put nursing school off twice before and am determined not to let my circumstances prevent me this time around. My ultimate goal is to become a midwife, and there are only 3 years between my goal and I. It is more than just a career for me. My mother passed away from postpartum preeclampsia 9 days after giving birth to me, and I believe that I am called to help decrease maternal mortality rates. During the last year of my previous undergraduate degree at North Carolina State University, I dealt with my grandfather passing from cancer, worked full time, and was still able to graduate with a high GPA and make the Dean’s List for multiple consecutive semesters. I don’t lack the drive for success, but I do lack the resources.

Balancing the responsibilities of nurturing my daughter and excelling in nursing school has been a formidable journey. The absence of family support compounds these difficulties, and the void left by my late mother adds another layer of complexity to my path. Being a parent while striving for academic success is no small feat. The demands of nursing school are relentless, requiring countless hours of study, clinical rotations, and dedication. My daughter's well-being is paramount, and finding the balance between motherhood and education is a constant challenge. Juggling childcare responsibilities, school assignments, and clinical shifts has often left me physically and emotionally drained. One aspect that distinguishes my experience is the absence of a supportive family network. Many students can rely on family members for assistance with childcare, emotional support, or even occasional respite. Unfortunately, I lack this privilege. My family is not nearby, and this absence makes each day a struggle as I strive to ensure my daughter is well cared for while I focus on my studies. The absence of my own mother is a void that I feel deeply, especially during this phase of my life. Her guidance and wisdom would have been invaluable as I navigate the intricacies of motherhood and nursing school. Losing her to postpartum preeclampsia was a devastating experience, one that drives me to help eradicate the disproportionately high maternal mortality rates that affect black women. Unfortunately, the financial strain of my situation is yet another hurdle. Balancing motherhood, nursing school, and financial stability is a delicate act. The inability to work while in school, coupled with the expenses of childcare, textbooks, and tuition, makes for a challenging financial landscape. Despite these hardships, I am unwavering in my commitment to providing a secure and loving home for my daughter. My pursuit of higher education is not only a means to improve our future but also a means to honor the memory of my mother. I will continue to strive for academic excellence, advocate for maternal healthcare reform, and ensure that my daughter has the opportunities and support she deserves. In conclusion, the journey to higher education as a parent comes with unique challenges, especially without the support of family and in the absence of a mother's guidance. My personal experience, marked by the loss of my mother to postpartum preeclampsia, drives my passion to make a difference in maternal healthcare. I am determined to complete my nursing education, overcome financial obstacles, and advocate for improved maternal care, so that no family has to endure the pain of losing a loved one during what should be a beautiful and joyous time in life.

Growing up without a mother left a void in my life, one that was tragically created by her passing due to postpartum preeclampsia. This life-altering event transpired just nine days after my birth, an experience that has shaped my worldview and kindled a profound purpose within me. It's a purpose that stems from the unwavering belief that everyone deserves accessible, high-quality healthcare. This belief is the very foundation upon which I base my academic and professional journey, and it's the bedrock for my commitment to improving maternal care in my community. Given the opportunity, I would embark on a deeply personal mission to transform my community through academic and professional excellence. My motivation is etched in the pages of my life story, a narrative that has fueled my unwavering desire to create a positive impact in the place I call home. One of my foremost objectives would be to enhance maternal care access, particularly for those in our community who are vulnerable due to socio-economic disparities. I'd work diligently to establish programs that provide comprehensive prenatal care, ensuring that expectant mothers receive the support and attention they require throughout their pregnancies. This mission is profoundly personal to me. Having grown up without the guiding presence of a mother, I know firsthand the enduring impact that accessible and exceptional healthcare can have on families. My aim is to shield other children from enduring the same suffering that marked my early years. Furthermore, I would embark on a journey to create educational initiatives that ignite the spark of inspiration in young individuals, particularly those from underprivileged backgrounds, to pursue careers in healthcare. A diverse healthcare workforce is essential to meet the diverse healthcare needs of our community. It's paramount to me that young people, irrespective of their socio-economic circumstances, have the chance to excel academically and professionally in the healthcare field. This commitment is rooted in my personal journey, the same journey that has driven me to reach academic and professional pinnacles. In a broader sense, I'd initiate community outreach programs and forge partnerships with local healthcare providers to ensure that individuals in underserved areas receive essential medical services. My overarching goal is to bridge the chasm in healthcare disparities, creating a community where everyone has unimpeded access to quality healthcare. The canvas on which I wish to paint these improvements in my community is larger than just healthcare. It extends into education and opportunity. By developing educational programs and mentorship opportunities, we can empower young minds to aspire and attain. These initiatives would aim to remove the financial and systemic barriers that often hinder educational progress, particularly for those who are economically disadvantaged. In the realm of professional development, I'd champion initiatives that provide job training, employment opportunities, and career advancement prospects to individuals who have been marginalized due to factors such as economic disparity, gender, or race. The idea is to cultivate a diverse, equitable, and inclusive workforce that mirrors the rich tapestry of our community, enabling people to contribute to their full potential and enhancing the collective prosperity of our community. In closing, my commitment to improving the community transcends a mere professional endeavor; it's a deeply personal journey propelled by a heartfelt mission. My motivation stems from my own life's narrative, from the lessons I've learned, the challenges I've overcome, and the void I've experienced. My goal is to ensure that no one in my community faces the same adversities I did. Through academic and professional excellence, I aspire to build a bridge to a brighter, more equitable, and healthier future for all who call our community home.
