Hi! My name is Tamaira, and I am a hardworking and determined student. I am interested in biochemistry and I am passionate about continuing to gain knowledge outside of high school. In my free time I enjoy drawing and painting, baking, and spending time with my family. In my life, I strive to have an impact and make a difference in the world around me. I hope to gain more knowledge about biochemistry, so that I will be able to better understand how processes within the body affect us and use that knowledge to help others live a healthier life. By earning scholarships, I can pursue a higher education without putting my family or myself in a situation where paying for college is more of a burden rather than an investment.

Since the pandemic, I have had a tough time communicating in social situations. Although this has been a problem my entire life, being secluded from my classmates and friends caused the problem to worsen. After returning to school, whether it be a group project or talking to my peers, I would feel anxious or scared to communicate and express myself. Despite feeling this way, I still wanted to engage with my peers. I wanted to feel included and not lonely. Over the past year, I have tried to become more comfortable in social situations. This led me to join multiple clubs and school organizations. Through these clubs, I have been able to volunteer within the community I live in more than I ever have. I have also made a few more friends I would not have made if I did not join these clubs. To overcome the intense fear and anxiety I felt, I found a solution that helped me to feel more comfortable with the people around me. I was able to assist people in many different ways. Whether it was interacting with seniors at a local nursing home or helping set up walks in my community. My point in mentioning my experience is to acknowledge that volunteering has shown me how much I enjoy helping others. Realizing this has helped me to be more secure with majoring in biochemistry. Through my major, I will be able to help others, which I am passionate about, while also learning fascinating information. In the future, I want to learn about various medical treatments, like vaccines, and how they help to keep us healthy. I also want to find out what can be improved. I want to find ways that people can live healthier and more fulfilling lives through researching and learning about the chemical processes within the body. Through the knowledge I gain, I hope to educate others and help to improve the resources we use to keep us healthy. By attaining more knowledge in my intended major, I can use that knowledge to help others live more fulfilling lives. Deciding on what I wanted to major in was a hard decision, but I am confident that biochemistry is what I would like to learn more about. Thanks to the clubs I joined, I have found a major that combines my interest. When I go to college, I plan on joining clubs and continuing to focus on volunteering and helping others.

As the oldest of three siblings, I demonstrate leadership toward my sisters. My relationship with my sisters is very close, and because of this, I know that I have to be aware of my actions. Since they are more impressionable, they tend to follow my lead. For example, we all have chores, but if I choose not to do mine it shows them that it is okay not to do theirs. Although it's nice to be a leader, I do not want my sisters to constantly follow my lead, because I make mistakes and don't always do the right thing. My way of leading is telling and showing them that they do not have to follow others and can make their own decisions.
Since I am the oldest, I am often used as an example, by my others, to show my siblings what they should and should not do. Whether it is illustrating my procrastination by saying, "Don't wait until the last minute like her," or saying, "We didn't have this problem with her," when my sisters are having a hard time with their work. Letting them know that they can make their own decision and do not have to follow others shows them that they do not have to be like me and do not have to change themselves. Although there are things they can tighten up on, they do not have to feel bad about it, and can always come to me if they need help. I want my sisters to know, that they can be leaders and do not always have to follow by example. They can create paths on their own, and guide their way.
Because I have graduated high school, and am going to college, I will not be home as much. I will not be there to help them with their homework or give them any advice if they need it. Although I've explained how I am a leader to them because we are so different we each affect and aid in molding each other into who we are. While I am away at college, I hope that my sisters lead themselves, make decisions on their own, and create their unique paths. As I go on to my next chapter I plan on following the advice that I gave them, because to be a good leader a leader should follow their advice to show that it works and will take them in the right direction.
E.R.I.C.A. Scholarship
The major that I am most interested in, and want to pursue is biochemistry. I have always been interested in math and science, so when I was researching majors this one stuck out the most. It combines everything I am passionate about into one category. In the future, I want to learn about different medical treatments, like vaccines, and how they help to keep us healthy. Also, I want to know what can be done to improve them, and I want to be able to find ways that people can live healthier and more fulfilled lives. I plan on doing this by researching the way medical treatments work and learning about the chemical processes within the body that works with the treatments to keep us healthy. Through the knowledge I gain, I want to educate others and help to improve the resources we use to keep us healthy.
Since graduating, I have been trying to become more comfortable with the fact that so much is changing. Since the pandemic, I have had a tough time being sociable on my own, because I had no one to talk to outside of my home. Over the past year, I have tried to become more comfortable in social situations. That encouraged me to join multiple clubs and school organizations. Through these clubs, I have been able to volunteer within the community I live in more than I ever have. I have made a few more friends that I would not have had if I did not join these clubs. My point in mentioning this is that volunteering has also shown me how much I enjoy helping others. Realizing this has helped me to be more secure with majoring in biochemistry. Through my major, I would be able to help people while also learning about something I find interesting. Choosing what I wanted to major in was a hard decision because there were so many different things that I was passionate about doing. STEAM has always been something that I was interested in, but I never thought that I would want to study the science aspect of it because I was more focused on art. In the end, I figured out the major that suited me, and now I am confident that biochemistry is something that I would like to learn more about. I hope that I will have an impact on others, in the future, through my passions and interests.
