LeNise M. Watson-Hudson Healthcare Scholarship
Attending medical school revealed my career objective of specializing in reproductive health by becoming an Obstetrician-Gynecologist. I want to intertwine my skills as a medical doctor, my passion for advocacy, education, and community service, and my belief in a comprehensive and integrated medical approach to provide the resources patients require to have health-giving pregnancies and birthing experiences. My ultimate career aspiration is to serve in an underserved community, focusing on improving the fetal and maternal mortality rates within minority populations.
I grew up near an underserved area, which propelled my desire to serve these communities because I witnessed the direct impact that a lack of resources and health inequality had on individuals within the neighborhoods that surrounded my own. I attended Howard University College of Medicine (HUCM) because it is a medical school committed to serving its community. I also chose to attend HUCM because I understood the importance of having a community of support, as I knew medical school was going to be an arduous transition in my life. HUCM is the second Historically Black College and University that I have attended since I graduated from Delaware State University with my undergraduate degree. During my undergraduate career, I was awarded opportunities and connections that I felt I would not have gotten anywhere else.
My education molded me into the studious scholar I am today. I chose to continue my personal growth at Howard University because I knew I would be awarded the same opportunities without having a competitive environment. I did not want to be seen as just another number, but valued and recognized as an individual. I gained insight into how HUCM aligned with my future career aspirations through community service, mentorship, research, and advocacy, while having the potential to further develop myself as an individual through community; thus, I ultimately chose HUCM over other institutions. Community was the most important aspect over any other factors that other schools had to offer.
Saswati Gupta Cancer Research Scholarship
My current career goal is to become an Obstetrician-Gynecologist. I want to impact birthing people’s pregnancy and birthing experiences. My ultimate career aspiration is to serve in an underserved community, focusing on improving the fetal and maternal death rates in an underserved or minority community. I grew up near an underserved area, which propelled my desire to serve these communities because I witnessed the direct impact that a lack of resources and health inequality had on people within the neighborhoods that surrounded my own. Personal health-related experiences allowed me to experience first-hand what it takes to advocate within a healthcare setting. I want to intertwine my skills as a medical doctor, my passion for advocacy, education, and community service, and my belief in a holistic medical approach to give the resources patients need to have health-giving pregnancies and birthing experiences. I hope to become a leader in research and community involvement, a mentor to students, and an advocate for patients within the community in which I practice. As for patient care, I believe in ensuring patients have stability in their support system, housing, and food security, which will be interwoven into the patient care that I provide. I plan to educate patients on factors impacting their health, such as diet, physical fitness, and mental health, and provide the necessary resources to improve health outcomes. I want to expose patients to alternative healthcare options, such as lactation coaches. I understand the importance of having a healthcare provider to advocate for your health needs. Simply understanding this importance drives me to continue working towards my goals.
