Jeremieh C. Soroten Memorial Scholarship
The legacy of Jeremiah C. Soroten underscores the significance of being a well-rounded individual. His dedication to diverse pursuits, from academic excellence to honorable service, serves as an inspiring model to the importance of personal development, dedication and passion. I've also been shaped by a rich mix of cultural exposure and meaningful life experiences. Born in Costa Rica, I acquired an early appreciation for cultural adaptability, but it was my formative middle school years, spent in the Native Alaskan villages of Tuluksak and Kotzebue, that afforded me invaluable exposure to the distinct traditions of the Yupik and Inupiaq peoples. These experiences cultivated a deep respect for cultural diversity and the resilience of communities living in close connection with their natural environments.
In addition to these cultural experiences, I’ve worked hard to grow both physically and mentally through a variety of activities. I’ve been surfing since I was four years old, which has taught me discipline, a deep respect for the ocean, and strong physical skills. My four years on the varsity swim team have helped me build a strong work ethic, learn how to work well with others, and stay committed to long-term goals. Being part of the Leilehua surf team also keeps me connected to the ocean and my local community. For the past three years, I’ve managed the girls’ water polo team, which has helped me develop leadership, organization, and communication skills. At school, I’ve kept a high GPA while also working part-time at The Black Sheep Ice Cream Shop, where I’ve learned to balance my time and work with people from all backgrounds. At home, I help out in a single-parent household, taking on daily responsibilities and supporting my family—an experience that has taught me how to be dependable, caring, and strong.
These diverse experiences have significantly shaped my academic and professional aspirations. I intend to pursue a degree in Marine Engineering at California Maritime Academy. This academic path aligns with my passion for the maritime field and my desire to contribute to the industry within Hawaii. My long-term goal is to combine a professional maritime career with international travel, to pursue my passion for surfing.
In conclusion, I believe that a well-rounded education, encompassing diverse cultural experiences, physical activity, and academic rigor, is essential for personal and professional growth. I am confident that my experiences and aspirations embody the values that this scholarship seeks to support, and I am honored to be considered for this opportunity.
