My name is Taj Johnson, and I am a rising college freshman with a passion for psychology, especially sports psychology. Growing up, I faced several mental health challenges, including ADD, OCD, and intense emotions on the soccer field. My anxiety often made these struggles worse, but with support, I learned to manage them and gained more control over my thoughts and emotions. These experiences have deeply influenced my beliefs, relationships, and career aspirations. Dealing with mental health issues has taught me the importance of empathy and understanding. I believe everyone faces battles that are not always visible, and this belief has shaped my relationships. I strive to be supportive and non-judgmental, offering a listening ear to those who need it. My experiences have also driven me to pursue a career in psychology, where I can help others navigate their mental health challenges. I chose to study sports psychology because I know firsthand the pressure athletes face. Sports can be a powerful outlet, but they can also amplify mental health struggles. My goal is to help athletes recognize and work through their perceived weaknesses, unlocking their potential and focusing on their strengths. By doing so, I believe they can improve their own lives and those of the people around them. I am passionate about supporting others on their journey to self improvement, especially in sports psychology, which is increasingly in demand. I want to be a resource for athletes and individuals struggling with mental health challenges in sports, offering them the tools to succeed both on and off the field. I believe that by helping athletes manage their mental health, I can make a positive impact on the world. A major motivator for me is the desire to set an example of service and resilience for my future children and those around me. I want to show them that with dedication and passion, any goal is achievable, no matter the obstacles. I aspire to demonstrate that helping others, just as I was helped, is a powerful way to make a lasting impact on the world. Through my work in sports psychology, I aim to prove that success is possible when you do not give up and remain committed to your purpose. I want to empower others to overcome their challenges and reach their full potential. My journey has not been easy, but it has made me who I am today. I am ready to take the next step in my education and career, and I hope to make a meaningful difference in the lives of others through my work in mental health.

I am deeply passionate about philanthropy because I want to give back to the people who have supported and uplifted me, especially my parents and loved ones. Their presence and encouragement have shaped who I am today, and I feel a strong desire to contribute to others in need, whether through donations or by helping others serve their communities. My ultimate goal is to establish a scholarship fund for individuals who, like me, are dedicated to helping others and making a positive impact on the world. I believe that giving back in some meaningful way is essential, and aside from financial support, I want to offer psychological assistance to those facing challenges. Growing up, I battled personal struggles, such as ADD, OCD, and emotional challenges on the soccer field. My high anxiety often made these issues more difficult to manage. However, with the support of others, I learned to control these challenges and develop strategies to manage my thoughts and emotions. Although I still face some hurdles, I have come a long way in my journey. This experience has motivated me to help others recognize and overcome their own challenges, just as I was helped along the way. I want to empower others to turn their perceived weaknesses into strengths. A significant motivator for me is the desire to set an example of service and resilience for my future children and those around me. I want to show them that with passion, dedication, and persistence, any goal is achievable. By helping others whether through philanthropy or sports psychology, | aim to make a lasting impact. I want to prove that success is possible when you remain committed to your purpose and don't give up on your vision. Philanthropy is one of my core goals and a driving force behind why I strive to do my best, not just academically but also in building meaningful relationships, being kind, and serving others. I believe that even though I may not yet have all the resources or skills I aspire to, I can still make a difference right now. My plan is to work hard to eventually help people financially, but in the meantime, I recognize the value of emotional support whether it's simply asking someone about their day or being as kind as possible. Small acts of kindness can have a powerful impact. What truly moves me is seeing how I can make a difference in someone's life through my actions. It's moments like these that leave a lasting impact on me. For example, my service trip to Medellín, Colombia, opened my eyes to the importance of giving back and making a connection with people, especially those in need. That experience, along with others like my involvement with programs such as Breakfast Buddies, has deepened my passion for service and philanthropy. These moments reinforce my desire to continue helping others in any way I can.

Although I still face some challenges, l've come a long way in my journey. This personal experience motivates me to help others overcome their own challenges, just as I was helped in the past. My goal is to assist people in recognizing and working through their perceived weaknesses, helping them unlock their potential and focus on their strengths. Facing adversity is a part of life that everyone must deal with at some point. For me, this happened when my club soccer team disbanded after six years, right before the critical college recruitment period. Suddenly, I found myself without a team, and my future in soccer seemed uncertain. It was a tough moment, but instead of feeling sorry for myself, I decided to take action. I gathered a few of my teammates who were in the same situation, and we thought out our next steps. I knew I could not just wait for an opportunity to come my way, I had to create it. I reached out to coaches I knew and asked for advice and potential openings. Through these conversations, I learned about a team that could be a good fit for me. I went on trial with them and, after a week of hard work, was accepted by the coach. Completing the season with this new team was just the beginning. I trained intensively and went on trials with several other teams. It was a long and challenging process that required me to travel for hours just to get a chance to prove myself. My efforts paid off, as I found myself with multiple options, including two MLS Next teams and one academy team. I chose one of the MLS Next teams, which was a significant step forward in my soccer career. This experience taught me that no matter what obstacles I face, I must never give up. It showed me the importance of hard work and discipline, both on and off the field. This adversity shaped me into a more disciplined person, helping me realize that nothing worthwhile is handed to you. You have to earn it, especially when things get tough. If I were to give advice to someone facing a similar situation, I would tell them to keep pushing forward. Do not give up, even when it feels like everything is against you. Work hard on your skills and stay disciplined. Remember that dreams require perseverance, especially during the challenging times. You will end up where you are supposed to be if you stay committed and focused. As I transition into college, I carry these lessons with me. My high school GPA of 3.7 reflects my dedication to my studies, and I am eager to apply this same commitment to my college education. I am ready to face new challenges and embrace opportunities, knowing that adversity is just another chance to grow stronger. The Simon Strong Scholarship would support my journey, allowing me to focus on my goals and continue to overcome any obstacles that come my way.

A time when I demonstrated compassion, kindness, and dedication to serving others was during a soccer missions trip to Medellín, Colombia. A small group of 20 boys and a few coaches, including myself, traveled to the heart of the city. Initially, I was nervous because of the stories l'd heard about gang influence in the area, but when I arrived, I was struck by the beauty and the sheer number of people packed into the small spaces. It made me realize how small I am in comparison to the vastness of the world. Throughout the trip, our team visited various neighborhoods where we played soccer with kids, many of whom had very little but were always smiling. Whether we were playing with young children or kids our age, I focused on serving them by engaging with them, having fun, and simply being present. It was clear that these interactions brought them immense joy, and for me, it was an opportunity to give back in a meaningful way. For a week, we hiked from sector to sector, meeting kids who had to walk long distances just to play, often without proper shoes or equipment. Many of the fields we played on were in rough shape, whether they were gang owned dirt lots or areas filled with sewage. Despite these circumstances, the kids were full of joy and excitement just to be out there playing soccer. I gave away some of my clothes and brought candy from America, but the most rewarding part was simply spending time with them and making them smile. Little did they know the impact they had on me. Their resilience and happiness, despite their challenging living conditions, reminded me of the importance of being grateful for everything I have, both big and small. They taught me that serving others doesn't require grand gestures it can be as simple as offering a smile and showing love, even to strangers. This experience has deeply influenced both my academic and personal goals. It motivated me to always be kind, to serve others whenever I can, and to strive to help those in need, whether emotionally or financially, in the future. This year, I've served others more than ever before, and it has driven me to work hard so l can continue to provide for those I love and support those in need. I am committed to continuing this legacy of service by volunteering at every opportunity and giving back to communities that need help. One of my long term goals is to donate money to people who are dedicated to serving others, just as l experienced in Colombia. I believe that even the smallest act of service can change someone's life, and I am determined to make that difference.

My name is Triumph, but I go by Taj. I'm an African American teenager born in New Jersey and raised in North Carolina. My dad is originally from Southampton, and my mom is from St. Kitts in the Virgin Islands. Growing up, l attended the same school throughout my life and played many sports like basketball, track, tennis, and soccer. While I was equally skilled in basketball and soccer, something about soccer stood out to me, and I decided to pursue it further. Playing club soccer in the US can be expensive, and I'm truly grateful for the sacrifices my parents made to support me. My parents have always supported me, both financially and emotionally, in everything I’ve pursued that could benefit me. They have invested more in me than I could ever pay back right now, and I am deeply grateful for their sacrifices that they have made. Their dedication pushed me to excel not only in sports but also in academics. l've always made it a point to stay on top of my grades as a way to show my parents that I care about their efforts and am determined to provide for them in the future. Coming from a middle-class family, I know the challenges my parents face to support me and my brother through school. They've invested a lot in our education, and now that l'm looking toward college, I want to ease their financial burden. Applying for scholarships is my way of giving back to them, ensuring they don't have to worry about paying for my tuition. Every scholarship opportunity counts, and this one would help me take a step closer to my goal of attending college without putting more pressure on my family. I'm determined to succeed, not only in academics but also by serving others, having fun, and making the most of the opportunities ahead. In the future, I hope to be successful enough to give back by offering scholarships to students who are grateful for their parents' sacrifices and who work hard to prove their appreciation. I want to help other young people, like me, who understand the value of family and are driven to make a difference in their lives, This scholarship would be an important part of my journey, and I'm committed to making the most of it, both for myself and for those who have supported me along the way.
