Through the years, my experiences with mental health have profoundly shaped my beliefs and career aspirations, particularly in my role as the founder of Code-Bots, a nonprofit focused on robotics and coding education for students of color. Initially, dealing with mental health challenges was overwhelming. I often felt doubtful about my abilities and struggled with anxiety, which affected both my personal life and my academic/ school-related work. These challenges pushed me to confront my anxiety and seek ways to manage stress effectively. Over time, what initially seemed like obstacles turned into valuable lessons for personal and professional growth. One of the most significant changes has been learning to manage my tendency to overthink. Early on in running Code-Bots, I found myself paralyzed by the fear of making wrong decisions. I would analyze every potential outcome excessively, which drained my energy and slowed progress. Through self-reflection, I learned to focus on actionable steps and trust my instincts, rather than being doubtful by hypothetical scenarios. This has allowed me to make decisions with greater confidence and move forward more effectively. Another crucial lesson has been the importance of delegation. I initially felt compelled to handle every aspect of Code-Bots myself, believing that it was the only way to ensure quality and consistency. However, this approach quickly became unsustainable and increased my stress. Recognizing this, I started delegating tasks to team members with the appropriate skills and expertise. This not only reduced my workload but also empowered my team, and overall improved our growth and success. Effective delegation has been crucial in expanding Code-Bots. By using the strengths of my team and involving them in decision-making, we have enhanced our programs, reached a wider audience, and improved the quality of our educational offerings. This approach has allowed me to focus on strategic planning and long-term goals while maintaining a healthy work-life balance. Additionally, my experiences with mental health have inspired me to integrate mental well-being into the environment of Code-Bots. I have made it a priority to create a supportive environment for both our team and the students we serve. We offer workshops and resources on mental health and stress management, recognizing these skills as essential for overall success. My journey with mental health has deeply influenced my approach to entrepreneurship. It has taught me resilience, the value of effective delegation, and the importance of maintaining a balance. These lessons have shaped my leadership at Code-Bots and inspired me to advocate for mental health awareness. As I continue to lead and grow, I am committed to using these insights to guide my work and support others in their personal and professional journeys.
