My name is Idriss Mouity Tchibinda, and I am a first-generation college student pursuing a degree in computer science. My journey has been shaped by both hardship and resilience. Growing up in a low-income household, I experienced challenges that many of my peers never had to face. There were times when my family had no gas or electricity, forcing us to boil water for a hot shower or study by the light of a phone flashlight. Those experiences could have easily discouraged me, but instead they motivated me to push harder. I learned early that determination and faith can carry you through the most difficult moments. One of my greatest influences has been my father, who immigrated to the United States at the age of thirty-five. He had to learn a new language, navigate an unfamiliar culture, and start over academically. Despite the obstacles, he persevered, walking miles to attend college classes and sacrificing stable employment to pursue his education. Today, he is on the verge of completing his doctorate. His resilience and discipline inspire me daily and remind me that no dream is too far if you are willing to work for it.These values of perseverance, sacrifice, and faith continue to guide my life. They drive my passion for computer science, a field I chose because of its power to create solutions that impact lives. Technology has the ability to shape economies, protect communities, and connect people across the globe. For me, computer science is more than coding or building systems—it is a way to solve problems, protect vulnerable communities, and bring about positive change. My dream is to work with Homeland Security, using my skills in technology and cybersecurity to protect the nation and ensure the safety of others. Leadership and service have also been important parts of my journey. In my community and at church, I have taken on roles that require responsibility, teamwork, and guiding others. Whether it is helping organize youth activities, mentoring peers, or serving during events, I have learned the importance of being dependable and using my time and energy to uplift those around me. I believe leadership is not about authority but about service—being willing to stand for others, encourage them, and create opportunities where they can thrive. These experiences have strengthened my character and prepared me to lead not just in my personal life, but in my future career. Pursuing a computer science degree is a critical step in achieving my personal and professional goals. The program provides me with technical knowledge, problem-solving skills, and real-world experience that I need to succeed in the field. More importantly, it equips me with the ability to take what I learn and use it for something greater than myself. My education will not only help me secure a career with Homeland Security, but it will also allow me to contribute to my community by inspiring other young people, especially immigrants and first-generation students, to pursue their goals despite the obstacles they face. In the long term, I hope to create opportunities for others by mentoring students, building programs that encourage diversity in technology, and ensuring that future generations know that their circumstances do not define their future. I want my life to be a testimony that with perseverance, faith, and education, anything is possible. This degree is not just about my career; it is about creating a lasting impact. With the knowledge and skills I gain, I plan to protect others, uplift communities, and open doors for those who will come after me. That is the legacy I strive to build through my education.

I became interested in computer science because I have always been curious about how technology works and how it can be used to solve real-world problems. Growing up in a low-income household, resources were limited, but I constantly found myself drawn to computers and problem-solving. I saw technology as a tool that could open doors to opportunities that my family and I never had before. As I learned more, I realized that computer science is not just about programming; it is about creating solutions that can impact communities and even protect nations. That realization fueled my passion and inspired me to pursue computer science as my field of study. My dream job is to work with Homeland Security, where I can use my knowledge of computer science to help protect people and ensure safety on a national level. I am especially motivated by the idea of using cybersecurity and technology to prevent threats and keep communities safe. With my skills and education, I want to contribute to creating secure systems that protect both individuals and the nation from potential harm. This goal drives me to study hard, seek opportunities to grow, and prepare myself for a career that makes a difference. I believe I am the best candidate for this scholarship because of my perseverance, work ethic, and vision for the future. Life has not been easy; I know what it feels like to have the gas turned off, to boil water for a hot shower, or to study by the light of a phone flashlight because the electricity was cut. Despite these struggles, I have never let circumstances determine my future. I continue to push forward, determined to earn my degree and achieve my goals. My father’s story also inspires me daily. He came to the United States at the age of 35, learned a new language, and went back to school while walking miles without a car to attend college classes. He even quit his job to finish his degree, and now he is on the verge of completing his doctorate. His journey taught me resilience, sacrifice, and the power of education. I carry those lessons with me as I pursue my own path in computer science. This scholarship would not only help me ease the financial burden of college but also allow me to focus more on my education and career development. With your support, I am confident that I can continue my studies, achieve my dream of working with Homeland Security, and one day give back by protecting others and creating opportunities for future generations.

Growing up in a low-income immigrant family has shaped the way I see the world, the way I value education, and the way I push myself forward no matter what obstacles come my way. My life has been filled with challenges, but I have also witnessed the power of perseverance through the example of my father. His journey continues to inspire me and serves as the foundation for how I handle my own struggles. When my father came to the United States at the age of 35, he barely spoke English and faced a decision many people would have avoided. Instead of giving up on his dreams, he decided to go back to school, even though that meant walking miles every day without a car just to attend his college courses. He took on the challenge of learning a new language while balancing the responsibilities of being a husband and father. He sacrificed job stability, even quitting his work completely, just so he could finish school. Now, after years of commitment, he is only a few months away from completing his doctorate. To me, his story is more than inspirational; it is proof that determination and education can change the trajectory of someone’s life. His example reminds me that while the struggle is real, the outcome is worth it. My own challenges have been different but connected to the same theme of resilience. There were times when our gas was turned off, and the only way to take a hot shower was by boiling water on the stove. When the electricity was cut, I would shower and sometimes even do my homework by the light of a phone flashlight. On days when our water was shut off, I filled large buckets from giant bottles just to have enough to bathe. These moments are hard to forget, but they also pushed me to be resourceful and to keep my focus on education, because I knew it was the only way out of the cycle of struggle. Even now, my challenges are not gone. As a college student, I face the stress of trying to balance tuition payments, the responsibility of paying off my car, and the difficulty of finding stable work. Still, I push forward. I refuse to allow my circumstances to dictate my future. Instead, I take inspiration from both my father’s journey and my own faith in God, which remind me daily that perseverance pays off. These challenges have deeply influenced my career goals. I am pursuing computer science because I believe technology is one of the greatest tools for building solutions and creating opportunities, especially in communities that have been overlooked or underserved. My vision is not only to secure a stable and successful career for myself but also to bring my knowledge back to Congo, where I was born, to help build resources and opportunities for others who are in situations like mine. I want to be part of the generation that uses education, innovation, and resilience to create long-term change. Through everything I have faced, I have learned the value of hard work, sacrifice, and discipline. I have also learned that challenges can either hold you back or fuel your motivation to keep moving forward. For me, every hardship has been fuel. I am not ashamed of my story; I am proud of it because it has shaped me into someone who knows how to keep going even when the odds are stacked against me. In the end, my father’s footsteps have guided my path, and my own experiences have prepared me for the future I am working to create. Life has not been easy, but I believe that is exactly why I am ready to take on the responsibility of shaping my own future and helping others do the same. Education is not just a goal for me; it is my way out, my foundation, and the legacy I want to pass on.

Growing up in a low-income immigrant family has not been easy, but it has shaped me into the person I am today. My father came to the United States at the age of 35 and made the bold choice to go back to school while learning a new language at the same time. Without a car, he walked several miles just to attend his college courses. Today, after years of sacrifice, he is about to complete his doctorate. To make it this far, he even had to quit his job just to focus on finishing school. Watching his journey taught me that perseverance and education can open doors, no matter how difficult the road may be. His story reminds me that anything is possible when you are willing to sacrifice and stay committed to your goals. My own upbringing has been full of challenges. There were times when our gas was turned off and I had to boil water just to take a warm shower. Sometimes the electricity was out, and I had to use the flashlight on my phone to get ready. Other times the water was shut off, and I had to fill buckets with giant water bottles just so I could bathe. Those are not easy experiences to live through, but I refused to let them hold me back from pursuing my academic goals. Instead, they pushed me to work harder, because I knew that education could help me create a different future. One example of this determination was when I first started learning web development. I had only taken a couple of beginner classes when I decided to challenge myself to recreate my former college’s website, Rock Valley College. It was frustrating at times, but every mistake taught me something new. By the end, I realized that the struggles were actually what made me stronger. That project gave me confidence and inspired me to keep creating. Later, I took on one of my most meaningful projects; building a website for my church. As a Christian, my faith is the foundation of everything I do, so this project was personal. It showed me that technology isn’t just about computers, it’s a way to serve communities, spread truth, and bring people together. That project confirmed that Computer Science is not just my field of study, but my calling. Even now, life is not simple. It’s hard to find a job while paying off my car and covering my college expenses, but I keep working because I want to control the outcome of my future. I don’t want my circumstances to decide where I end up. Instead, I want to use the struggles I’ve faced as motivation to build something better. My goal is to finish my Computer Science degree and use my skills to create opportunities for others, especially those who come from low-income and immigrant backgrounds like mine. Where you start does not determine where you finish; and my father’s sacrifices, along with my own experiences, are proof of that.

When I first started learning about web development, I didn’t think it would become something I was truly passionate about. One of my earliest and most challenging projects was trying to recreate my former college’s website, Rock Valley College. At that time, I had only taken a couple of beginner web development classes, so I felt nervous about whether I could actually pull it off. There were a lot of challenges and moments where I got stuck, but I learned that with technology there is always a way forward if you’re willing to keep trying. Every problem pushed me to dig deeper, and every solution I found gave me the confidence to keep going. That project was tough, but it ended up being one of the best learning experiences I’ve had. What made the project meaningful was not just finishing it but realizing what technology can do. I learned that mistakes aren’t failures, they’re opportunities to improve. Each error I fixed showed me how much I was growing, both in my coding skills and in my mindset. By the time I was done, I had gained more than technical knowledge. I had learned patience, problem-solving, and how to believe in myself when things felt difficult. That experience motivated me to take on more projects. One of the most important ones to me personally was building a website for my church. This project was special because it wasn’t just about coding; it was about creating something that served my community. As a Christian, I see technology as a way to bring people together and share the truth. By building the church website, I was able to create a platform where people could connect, learn, and grow in their faith. It felt rewarding to use my skills to contribute to something that mattered to me and to others. After that, I went on to build more websites, whether for school projects or just out of personal interest, and each time I felt my passion for technology grow stronger. What inspires me most about working in technology is the endless possibilities it gives you. Coding feels like learning a whole new language, and with that language, you can build almost anything you imagine. Not many people know how to code, but those who do have the ability to create things that impact lives in powerful ways. I love how every project starts as just an idea, and through patience and hard work, it becomes something real that people can actually use. Looking forward, my goal is to keep studying Computer Science and to use what I learn to make a difference. I want to build tools and platforms that help communities, create opportunities for others, and inspire people the way I have been inspired. My love for God gives me purpose, and technology gives me a way to live that purpose out. Together, they remind me that there are no limits to what I can achieve.
