Life is a mosaic, each piece representing a unique experience, perspective, or challenge, cultivating a way that sets the foundation for one’s life choices. For me, that choice is to change lives by helping others overcome personal challenges. Having lived in over 14 countries and states, including Guatemala and Brazil, I have learned the profound connections between environment, opportunity, and well-being through their vibrant cultures and diverse landscapes. These journeys offered more than stamps on a passport—they revealed the disparities and inequities that shape lives. By combining innovation, equity, and excellence, meaningful change can be created. Like piecing together a puzzle, my goal as an occupational therapist is to help others assemble their lives into something whole and beautiful despite obstacles.
Addressing health disparities and serving diverse communities resonates deeply with my personal journey and career aspirations. Living in various places exposed me to both privilege and poverty, fueling my determination to make a difference in underserved populations. My priority is to focus on community-based practice and integrate research into clinical applications for underserved communities, as this approach will equip me with the necessary tools to address these challenges. I am particularly drawn to interdisciplinary collaboration, as working with professionals from various fields is essential for holistic, sustainable care.
Currently, I am making a difference in my community by working in healthcare alongside occupational and physical therapists in an inpatient surgical unit. This hands-on experience has allowed me to witness the profound impact rehabilitation professionals have on patients’ lives. I have seen individuals regain their independence through therapy, each milestone a testament to the importance of compassionate and skilled care. I assist patients in navigating their recovery, offering not just physical support but also emotional encouragement. My adaptability and ability to connect with individuals from diverse backgrounds have strengthened my commitment to improving patient outcomes and ensuring that everyone, regardless of socioeconomic status, has access to quality healthcare.
Beyond my professional work, I also volunteer, assisting in community outreach programs that provide resources and support for individuals facing physical and cognitive challenges. These experiences have deepened my understanding of the barriers people encounter in their daily lives and reinforced my belief that occupational therapy is not just about rehabilitation—it is about empowerment, accessibility, and inclusivity.
After undergrad, I plan to contribute by serving diverse and underserved communities as an occupational therapist. My goal is to work in community-based rehabilitation programs that focus on improving accessibility and inclusivity for veterans with disabilities. I am particularly passionate about advocating for policy changes that promote equitable healthcare access, ensuring that therapy services are not a privilege but a right for all. By collaborating with interdisciplinary teams, I aim to develop innovative interventions tailored to individuals' unique needs, helping them regain independence and enhance their quality of life. In addition to clinical practice, I plan to mentor aspiring occupational therapists, sharing my experiences and knowledge. By assisting them, I will help aspiring occupational therapists gain a complete understanding of how different societal structures impact rehabilitation outcomes and how to develop culturally sensitive and effective interventions.
Similar to the way life is structured, I envision my future as an occupational therapist as a vibrant mosaic, each piece representing accessibility, inclusivity, and patient-centered care. These elements come together to form a greater picture—one of meaningful impact and empowerment for individuals and communities. A career in occupational therapy would be the pivotal piece in completing this mosaic, enabling me to take the next step toward making a lasting impact while growing as a culturally aware, compassionate, and innovative professional.

I have magical hands. From an early age, my mother told me that my hands held immense power. These conversations often took place as I attempted to make her feel better after a long day at work, tirelessly massaging her shoulders to provide relief. Each time I placed my tiny hands on her, she would remark on their magic, insisting that I had to do something meaningful with them. I often questioned how my little hands had such power, how they could alleviate her pain and restore her comfort. As I grew older, those hands, once used for simple massages, went on to explore and learn from the world around them. Everything I touched became an opportunity to understand, to find meaning, and to uncover lessons hidden within my grasp.
Some may dismiss the idea of "magic hands" as fantasy, but I believe otherwise. Reality and fantasy exist within the same mental construct, daring us to reach for the unimaginable and make it real. My truth is that I have always been fascinated by making magic come true for others, beginning with the simple act of extending a hand. This philosophy shapes my approach to occupational therapy. It is imperative to look beyond limitations, to envision possibilities that may initially seem unreachable. This mindset will be central to my practice as an occupational therapist, guiding individuals not just to recover but to dream again—to aspire to lives they once imagined, no matter how daunting their journey may seem.
I have always been driven by an immense desire to help people regain their happiness by returning to the lives they once knew. Growing up in a military family, I became accustomed to exploring different parts of the world and witnessing how people adapt to their environments based on available resources. This experience illuminated the profound impact of occupational therapy. The field’s emphasis on helping individuals engage in activities that hold personal significance resonated with me deeply. Daily operations and lifestyles vary from country to country, yet I saw individuals persist, adapt, and flourish despite challenges. Witnessing this resilience inspired me to pursue a career focused on not just physical rehabilitation but also the restoration of confidence and enthusiasm in daily life. Occupational therapy offers the perfect fusion of physical and psychological support, enabling me to help people holistically.
My interest in occupational therapy is not limited to a single objective; rather, it encompasses the vast and dynamic aspects of the field. Pursuing a degree in this discipline means acquiring the advanced knowledge and clinical expertise needed to provide the highest level of care and comfort for those in need. I am particularly fascinated by the challenge of restoring cognitive and motor function, as well as the significant impact these efforts have on individuals and society as a whole. Long term, I aspire to contribute to the field through research, exploring innovative therapeutic techniques that enhance recovery. I also hope to advocate for the expansion of occupational therapy services in underserved communities, ensuring that everyone, regardless of their circumstances, has access to the care necessary to lead a fulfilling life.
Our hands are more than just physical tools; they are conduits of healing, comfort, and transformation. The work we do with our hands extends beyond the physical realm, influencing the emotional and mental well-being of those we serve. Through this program, I hope to refine my skills and contribute to the advancement of occupational therapy and rehabilitation. With the magic of my hands, I will help others reclaim their lives, proving that what once seemed unimaginable can indeed become reality.

As sports and other physical activities become more publicized, the consequences of these activities are brought to light as well. A severe issue that is constantly overlooked is veterans, who following their service, require immediate medical care and therapy. Unfortunately, the time taken to rehabilitate and progress the veteran's well-being is exceedingly prolonged. I intend to shorten the recovery time of patients by establishing new advancements in various exercise techniques and enriching physical activities. Having the pressure of tuition released from my mind with the reward of this scholarship would allow me to focus more on studying patient care and rehabilitating patients. My goal is to focus the majority of my attention on perfecting skills needed for rehabilitating injured persons, an easily attainable objective if I am graciously awarded this scholarship. It is not just veterans that require this specified profession, but also athletes, persons injured in car accidents, those with medical conditions, and those with abnormal physical functions. Actions taken to solve these issues and lessen the recovery time will be working extensively with other medical professionals to learn which techniques provide patients with the most pain relief. This includes extensive studies of various medicines that provide long-term relief in shortened attention periods. The concept as to why rehabilitation is so important is constantly "glazed over", often going unappreciated. With the immense importance society places on veterans providing adequate national safety, ensuring that these individuals are adequately cared for following their service is important too.
In a world where division is often a focus, it is challenging to inspire principles of unity. This is why I make it a priority to create an impact on society that breaks down these barriers by being involved in organizations with the common goal of unification. As a Main Street Academy volunteer in Georgia, I can enrich the minds of the younger people by encouraging them to work together and be respectable members of society. I ensure to assist students in achieving a better understanding of specific topics that they may be struggling with through careful listening and collaboration towards finding new techniques to deepen their understanding of a particular topic. As an active member of the Iota Lambda Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, I lead impactful discussions with students, sharing powerful lessons in community involvement and unity. A majority of my time was spent working as the Service Week Manager, coordinating various activities to assist with educating students on the importance of being involved in your community. Through personal work and dedication, I developed and implemented a forum promoting open discussion regarding race relations for a broad community in Atlanta, operating with various volunteer organizations to ensure effective conversations and outcomes. The idea of togetherness is one instilled through personal involvement in the community, an idea I persistently work towards.
As I continue to grow and progress in a professional setting, I find myself with more of a desire to fully immerse myself into a system that would allow me to give back to the healthcare field, working to create equal opportunities for everyone, ensuring all have access to effective medical care. Due to my education at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, I would spread that passion to others, instilling in them the concept of working above and beyond the bare minimum requirements for proper healthcare. Having the opportunity to show others that finding passion and inspiration in assisting others can help combat any negative stereotypes or doubts about the healthcare system, instilling more support in this particular field, the true reward of why I am pursuing this career.

They say your firsts are always memorable: first kiss, first love, first career, first heartbreak. Yet there is no expectation for you to remember your first steps or first meal. There is no way to forget significant occurrences in your lifetime, a first child or first marriage, let alone the death of your friend in a school shooting. That day, my friend's body was left behind, along with my best memories of him gone. The memories of the event are not what was remembered, it was the feeling, the emotion. The rush of adrenaline I experienced firsthand, sent titillations of tumult in my hands. The blood pounding in my ears as all other voices fade away—an impudent cooling of my skin as sweat begins to form along my brow. My heart beat rampantly at a pace I could not keep up with. Tears of sadness pooled into my eyes, every single one dropping out onto my desk below. The one aspect of this experience that became dominant was my thoughts.
What many fail to recognize is that our lives can drastically be altered in a matter of seconds, forcing us to determine how we persevere in our newly altered lives. Asking all questions imaginable, my thoughts clouded my judgment and rationality for a moment, attempting to process the slew of emotions I was overcome with. I immediately became aware of my surroundings following the consistent news reports, detailing how thirteen children, at a school twenty minutes from mine, were pronounced dead. Ferociously existing through a constant turmoil of unambiguous reports on exactly who these people were, I began to speculate on all possibilities as to why this occurred, attempting to find any way to escape these harsh realities.
I find myself focusing my attention on more positive outlooks and activities through this abhorrent time, thrusting myself into a world of social liberties, and organizing anti-gun rallies. This protest served as a way to show me how to keep my friend's memory alive, as well as address the issues of mental health in the black community and construct new uplifting measures amongst the community as opposed to aiding in their destruction. The black community grapples with a significant mental health crisis profoundly influenced by the presence of guns in their neighborhoods. The overabundance and idealized perception of guns have contributed to an unfortunate surge in violence and crime, leading to trauma and distress being embedded among community residents. Addressing this crisis will require comprehensive efforts from all members of our community, expanding into other communities of color to achieve solidarity and spark inspiration amongst all. By tackling these issues holistically, we can work towards alleviating the mental health burden the black community faces and fostering a safer and more resilient society.
One of the biggest issues surrounding gun control stems from a glorified perception of the world of guns, one that plagues the Black community. Preparations for a rally require extreme organization, where I relax my mind to be able to pinpoint all the necessities needed to achieve the goals of recognition. Allocation of appropriate skills and advantage points assist in obtaining various exigencies towards the cause, giving me a moment to step back and revel in the work and progress made towards peace. I work diligently to determine exactly what message is best to convey to the public, orchestrated through intensive contribution and an exchange of ideas throughout the community. Tragedy brings people experiencing tremendous grief together, which can be exploited to create a positive outcome of the situation.

By leading through a positive example with the assistance of this scholarship, I will prove that I am a quick learner and given the opportunity, able to show my love for using my skills to assist in leading. I can showcase my perseverance in any situation, making me a perfect representation of this scholarship’s standards.
