Throughout my life, I have faced numerous challenges, yet I have always approached them with my chin up and eyes forward. Whether it was losing 60% of my kidney function when I was only two years old or sustaining a devastating knee injury during my senior year of high school, life has continuously presented me with obstacles. However, each time, I’ve risen to meet these challenges head-on.
When I was a toddler, I contracted hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), a disease that led to a significant loss of kidney function. As of this year, I retain roughly 40% of my kidney function and have been placed on the transplant list. I take daily medications to support my overall health and kidney function, but despite the ongoing medical hurdles, I remain determined. I will overcome this battle, and in doing so, I hope to raise awareness about athletes who face serious illness both off the court and on the playing field.
In addition to managing my health challenges, my passion for sports has been tested. In December 2024, while attending a volleyball camp for my dream college, I suffered a knee injury that and had to undergo two surgeries.
Despite these setbacks, I have learned to keep my chin up and my eyes forward. I trust in God to guide me through this challenge, and the leadership I’ve gained during this time has been profound. It hasn’t been easy to stay motivated and focused during this recovery period. The long days of school, therapy sessions, and at-home exercises have tested my resolve, but they have also reinforced my deep love for volleyball.
There have been moments when it would have been easy to give up. I could have succumbed to the discouraging news from my kidney specialists, who continue to tell me that my condition isn’t improving, and that I remain on the transplant list. However, I continue to take my medications and focus on my physical and mental well-being. I firmly believe that this perseverance will allow me to overcome the challenges and live a fulfilling life.
Similarly, I could have abandoned my dream of playing collegiate volleyball after my injury. Yet, every day I push myself through physical therapy, work out at home, and strive to exceed my limits. For anyone facing a similar obstacle, I would say this: never let your emotions control you. You will experience both highs and lows, but the key to persevering is staying grounded and managing your emotions through it all.
This scholarship represents not just a financial opportunity, but a stepping stone toward achieving my dreams. As a Division III volleyball commit to McDaniel College in Maryland, this scholarship will help me continue my journey toward playing collegiate volleyball. Despite my current injury, I remain determined to get back on the court, and winning this scholarship will bring me one step closer to that goal.
Beyond volleyball, this scholarship will also help me fulfill my career aspirations. For the last tow years at High School, I’ve been enrolled in the Early Childhood Education program, and I plan to become a preschool teacher. I am excited to begin this new chapter in my life, and this scholarship will play a crucial role in helping me reach both my academic and athletic goals.
The road to success has never been easy for me, but I am steadfast in my belief that persistence, faith, and emotional resilience will carry me forward. I look forward to starting my college journey, and I am incredibly grateful to be considered for this scholarship.
