From a young age, my curiosity for the world around me, particularly in the STEM field, was obvious to anyone who knew me. This curiosity, coupled with my rural upbringing, nurtured my passion for nature and animals.
Being from a rural area, veterinary clinics were few and far between. This meant that injured or feral animals in the area were treated by civilians in the town. I found myself drawn to these creatures, and they to me. I helped many animals in their rehab before setting them free again. Because of this, I was nicknamed the "animal whisperer" by family and friends because of my ability to gain the trust of even the most wary animals. Their trust in me has consistently drawn them closer allowing me to help them. Over the years, I lost count of how many animals were saved, rehabilitated, and sent back out but I find joy in knowing they lived longer and in less pain because of my help. I've always believed that animals share a spiritual, unstudied connection with the Earth. I feel being close to animals helps people stay open and empathetic. It’s a bond I feel privileged to witness. Now, as a high school senior accepted into Kansas State University, I want to protect the natural world around me. My goal is to further my education to positively impact my community. I plan on studying biology at K-State, a stepping stone toward becoming an advocate for the environment and all animals.
As the first in my family to embark on this higher education journey, I'm aware of the numerous unknowns that lie ahead. But determined to help the voiceless, I'm ready to embark on the next chapter of my life. One of the many worries about my future is finances. My dream is to graduate college debt-free, to be able to focus on my studies and future career without the constant worry of financial burden. I want to gain the knowledge and skills necessary to make a difference in the lives of those who can't advocate for themselves. Scholarships are crucial to this plan. Without them, the financial strain of college could make completion improbable. Winning this scholarship would be a significant step towards achieving my goals. It would not only lighten the financial load but also allow me to focus on my academic pursuits. I'm determined to complete my bachelor's degree, and with the right support, I believe I can make a meaningful impact on our world. So I am hopeful and ready to work towards a future where I can give a voice to the voiceless, and in doing so, make our world a better place for all its inhabitants.

Paying for higher education is a daunting responsibility particularly when relying on aid. I am from a single-parent household, with my mother bearing the sole responsibility for my upbringing. My father‘s absence in providing child support, essential items, or care is a significant factor in our financial situation. With only a single income in the house, I began working part-time at 14 years old. I began working to alleviate my mother’s stress by paying for my necessities. All of my earnings over the last 5 years have gone straight to bills, food, and emergencies. This left no room for saving for college or even a residency. Although going through these times were hard, the character and emotional development that it solicited made me a better person with a deeper empathy for others going through unknown situations.
In recent years, I have witnessed the detrimental effects of environmental disruption that are occurring worldwide. By spreading awareness, I aim to speed up an evitable revolution of the human diet, and corporations polluting. Recognizing that nature is vital to sustaining life, I want to contribute to restoring the balance the ecosystems so the environment can thrive. I was admitted to Kansas State University for their bachelor’s biology program. I believe that if enough people care enough, the environment can recover and thrive. If we can’t get through to the next generation then I believe we won’t be able to save Earth. My decision to pursue biology is not solely based on the rewards and innovation, but also on my commitment to making a difference. I hope to make an impact that leads to making the planet healthy and sustainable.
Rivera-Gulley First-Gen Scholarship Award
From an early age, I have been captivated by the beauty of nature and the importance of sustainable living. As I embark on my biology degree at Kansas State University, my goal is to utilize my education and further my knowledge to make a difference in the environmental challenges that are being faced today. By combining my passion for the environment with my love for all organisms, I aim to contribute to developing innovative solutions that will protect the planet and save the beings on it.
To effectively address the environmental destruction seen today, it is crucial to understand the interactions between ecosystems and human interferences. If people were aware of the destruction and murder of animals caused for their products, entertainment, and scientific testing. Due to the high demand for resources and space, the importance of the environment is being overlooked. While attending college I will gain a deep understanding of the ecosystem, climate change, and conservation efforts. This information will provide me with a foundation to analyze and find solutions for the ongoing environmental demolition. Although I will use my knowledge to find solutions, I will advocate for the environment through the education of others.
Educating others about what’s going on with our environment around the world is important if the goal is to see change. As an advocate, I will need to be well-informed about how the Earth functions. Educating the next generation about the importance of saving our environment could be the only way humans can live off of Earth’s resources. To educate others I need to first be educated myself.
Agriculture plays a significant role in environmental sustainability and food security. We have many global issues because of the destruction of the environment for resources. We need to find solutions to human issues like a lack of food or space, while also finding solutions to environmental destruction and mass slaughter of animals. By furthering my education, I plan to explore innovative approaches to agriculture that prioritize sustainability and minimize the negative environmental effects. Studying and perfecting new ways of farming could reduce resource consumption, and minimize chemical inputs.
My childhood on a farm has given me a unique perspective on the symbiotic relationship between humans and animals. I believe that by advocating for better treatment of animals and promoting their importance in the ecosystem, we can pave the way for a more sustainable future. But animals are more than their reduced impact on the environment. Animals are sentient beings that are being used for human food, entertainment, fashion, and testing. I aim to help find a world where animals are no longer slaughtered or harmed for human use. This advocacy aligns with my values and my academic goals, as I aim to be the voice for the voiceless. I want to be a successful woman leader in a STEM career. I want to be a representative for future generations, animals, and the Earth.
In conclusion, my passion for the environment and my deep connection with animals have driven me to pursue a degree in biology at Kansas State University. My goal is to make a difference in the world by advocating for sustainable practices and protecting all organisms. I'm excited to take on this journey and confident that with the right financial support, I can achieve my dreams and contribute to a healthier, more sustainable world.

Diverse representation in STEM is necessary because it brings different perspectives, fosters innovation, and reflects the diverse world we live in. When everyone comes from a similar background, you're likely to miss out on ideas that could lead to innovations or breakthroughs.
Inclusion in STEM means that solutions can be designed for a broader audience. This leads to considering the needs of different cultures, genders, and socioeconomic backgrounds. Future generations depend on representation to inspire them. Children will believe they are capable of being in the STEM field if they see others who look like them already doing it. This can inspire them to pursue careers they might have thought were out of reach.
Financial support, like scholarships, can play a big role in increasing diversity in STEM by helping students from low-income backgrounds overcome economic barriers. With scholarships like this, I can pursue my dream of working with animals. I want to make a difference for the environment and the animals but I also want to be an inspiration for young people today. My passion for animals and the environment will add a unique and valuable perspective to the STEM field. Entering a field that can have varying diversity, being an outsider is always a worry.
Due to racial profiling and economic disparities, many people don’t believe they can succeed or don’t have the money to attend higher education. These social issues are still unresolved today but to help close the salary gap among races, scholarships, representation and support are needed. Hopefully we can see a world with an equitable STEM. Representation matters, and by showcasing diverse role models, we can encourage a more diverse group of talent in STEM. This, in turn, helps to address the persistent underrepresentation of minorities in STEM education and careers.
Despite the clear benefits of diverse representation in STEM careers, significant challenges remain. Addressing systemic inequalities requires a multifaceted approach that includes policy changes, institutional support, and cultural shifts within STEM communities. Efforts to increase diversity must be intentional, sustained, and inclusive, with a focus on creating environments where everyone feels valued and supported.
In conclusion, diverse representation in STEM careers is not only important but essential for driving innovation, addressing global challenges, promoting social equity, and inspiring future generations. By embracing diversity and fostering inclusive environments, we can unlock the full potential of STEM fields and create a brighter, more equitable future for all.

My household is just my mom and I. Our home has always been just the two of us. With this, my mom has always been the head of the household and the breadwinner. My mom has always made sure I had food, a place to stay and a good life. We had gotten to a point of security where we weren’t living paycheck to paycheck and then the pandemic hit, taking a toll on my mom’s career. As a mortgage loaner, when the housing market crashed and everything began rising in costs. Luckily, this is when I got my first job to help support us and bring food home. Because we have been living on very little money, no money has been saved for college. College is important to me because I will be the first in my family to get accepted into a higher education school. Without financial help, I will be dealing with all of college payments myself while trying to complete my education. If I can receive help with my finances, I will be able to focus on my education while in college and hopefully already have some courses finished.
One of the biggest challenges I’ve faced was when I doubted my ability to complete school and move to higher education. Covid-19 had a huge impact on my time in high school. My eighth-grade year was the year that COVID ended our school year in March. Transitioning to high school is hard enough but the addition of Covid made it harder to socialize, destress, and thrive. In my freshman year of high school, we switched from remote to in-person multiple times and we were all always on edge about getting Covid. Contracting COVID-19 could be detrimental to me because I have asthma. Being at-risk, COVID is a very real concern. As COVID-19 stopped affecting schools, the coursework was getting exponentially harder. All of this added stress made the class feel impossible. Being gifted in middle school meant that I never learned a study ethic because I never had to study. I knew I would have to change my habits when my grades were dropping sophomore year. I didn’t know how to help myself so I asked my older sister because she struggled in high school too. My sister is about 11 years older than me and she has always been more like a mother to me. I knew when she struggled that she learned to study. After many failed trials of study mediums, I found what works for me in each subject. Without her help, I may not have had the strength to keep trying until something worked. Her motivation and care calmed me. It was the most difficult thing I’ve had to learn but it was worth it. My biggest challenge resulted in me learning something I needed. I look forward to using my new study habits in college.

Science is a rewarding, innovative, and rapidly evolving field. Although those are perfect reasons to choose a career in science, they aren’t my reasons. I find my reasons for my career closer to personal beliefs. In recent years, I have witnessed the detrimental effects of environmental disruption that are occurring worldwide. These disruptions are often generated by human interference with the environment. Humans are all guilty of polluting and harming animals but large corporations and businesses are the largest contributors. By spreading awareness, I aim to speed up an evitable revolution of the human diet, and corporations polluting. From a young age, my innate curiosity for the world, especially within the realm of science, was evident to everyone around me. This curiosity, coupled with my rural upbringing, nurtured my passion for nature and animals.
Being from a rural area, veterinary clinics were sparse and often would refuse to treat wild or exotic animals. Often, there were animals that required veterinary care. With limited professional help available, these creatures frequently relied on the kindness and resourcefulness of local townspeople. I regularly found myself among those caring for these animals, and it wasn't long before I became known for my unique ability to connect with them. My friends and family quickly and affectionately dubbed me the "animal whisperer," a testament to my knack for gaining the trust of the most skittish creatures. I've always believed that animals share an unstudied connection with the Earth, a bond that I feel privileged to witness. I feel animals know people's true intentions and can tell people’s true personalities quickly. Since I’ve never had any ill will towards any animals, I believe they know that when encountering me. Their trust in me seemed to grow, and over time, this bond has only strengthened.
Over four years, I have been in a program called the Animal Health Sciences Academy at Olathe North High School. In the program, I take specialized science classes directed toward animal biology and when I graduate, I will have completed eight science credits in high school compared to the usual four. This is a competitive program that requires you to stay in the program for all four years and complete hundreds of volunteer hours. The volunteering has to be directly linked to working with animals. As a senior in high school, I am an active advocate for veganism and reducing pollution. I’ve been accepted into Kansas State University. My aspirations have evolved but my passion remains unchanged. I want to protect the natural world around me. My goal is to further my education to impact my community positively. At K-State, I plan to major in biology. This field lays the foundation for a future where I can stand as an advocate for environmental conservation and animal welfare. As the first in my family to embark on this higher education journey, I'm aware of the numerous uncertainties that lie ahead. Nevertheless, with a heart full of determination to represent those without a voice, I am eager to step into this new chapter of my life.
My educational journey is not just about personal growth; it's about community impact. By delving into the complexities of biology, I aim to acquire the skills necessary to contribute to ecological preservation and animal protection efforts in my hometown and beyond. The knowledge I gain will enable me to educate others, advocate for policy changes, and engage in hands-on conservation work. This path isn't easy, but it's driven by a calling that I cannot ignore.
My commitment to becoming an environmental and animal advocate is more than just a career choice; it's a reflection of who I am and the values I've held since childhood. I am ready to embrace the rigors of academia and the joy of discovery that awaits at Kansas State University. With ambitious goals, I am reminded that I can only achieve my goals with financial support. Scholarships are going to be essential for allowing me to focus on my studies and my mission to advocate for the environment and animals. I am driven by the knowledge that my passion, along with a solid educational foundation, will enable me to make an impact.

The center of my belief system is that animals should not be used for human entertainment, whether that be “food,” clothes, luxuries, aesthetics, etc. All my other beliefs revolve around animal rights.
I believe everyone and everything should be treated with respect. This and many of my other morals do not align with mainstream beliefs. I wanted to break the chain of just doing something because everyone else does. I grew up eating meat and animal products and I could not do it anymore. All animals deserve to be free from fear of slaughter the same as humans. But I want to fight for those without voices or proper treatment. Besides animal rights, I have protested/advocated for women’s rights, transgender rights, and abortion rights.
My choice to fight for the underdog is not without reason. Being a minority has shown me what it was like to be the person who needed someone to stand up for them. As the only person of color in my family I always noticed how people would treat me differently than the rest of my family. I was discriminated against, called names, and treated like an “other” not only by my peers but by adults too. Experiencing this made me feel isolated and unequal, I knew I never wanted anyone else to have to experience inequality. Although I know others have since experienced inequality, I want to help anyone I can. Inequality affects all minorities in different ways. As a nonbinary person, being publicly nonbinary is not only exhausting but dangerous because of all the transphobic/homophobic people. My character was built over the years from the adversity I had to face. Character is important to who we are as individuals and what we stand for.

Black Leaders Scholarship
Finding the true history of black excellence is difficult. Because it was made difficult due to racial discrimination. That’s why I find it important to truly dig for the past that has been fabricated, hidden, and stolen from POC all over the world. Black people often struggle to find their true heritage or ancestry because there was little to no documentation on black people before the 1950s. Black people worked harder for less money and less credit. In urban areas, the black population is higher than anywhere else. Because urban areas are often lower-income, there is more crime in urban areas. This led to people feeling less safe. Police had a worse relationship with the black community then and would often take way longer than average to arrive at the scene if a black individual called than a white one. This could have been due to racial discrimination but also could be due to socioeconomic differences. So in New York City in 1966, a woman by the name of Marie Van Brittan Brown, a nurse, invented a home security system that would help keep her safe while she was home alone at night. Although we know she practiced as nurse, there is no evidence of her going to college. The lack of evidence of her attendance shows how little documentation there was on black people at the time. Her invention was the first home security system invented. Her security system consisted of four peepholes (all at different heights for different people, television monitors to see the exterior of the house, a sliding camera for a swivel view, a remote control deadbolt on the door, and a two-way microphone system to be able to speak to the person outside. When the alarm is triggered, the device automatically calls the police to the area. Her invention goes on to be the blueprint for modern home security systems and CCTV. Like many inventors, especially minorities, she never made money off her invention. Her contributions have been recognized in hindsight, she was an unappreciated, significant part of American history. She received an award from the Nationalist Scientists Committee for her inventions but the year for the award was never recorded. Even after her accomplishments have been acknowledged, no reparations have been paid to her family. Her family lost out on money that would have grown in value over time. Not only was she robbed of her reward, her family was robbed of a better life style and billions of dollars. Even today, it is hard to celebrate her achievements due to lack of information. Unlike today, having photos of family used to be a luxury. Because Marie Brown never got to live a luxurious life, there are only two pictures of Marie Brown that are verified to be her. Marie Van Brittan Brown deserves farther recognition, her descendants deserve reparations, and to rest with the credit for the home security system. As Americans, we owe it to Marie Brown to insure black figures received what is owed to them.

Powering The Future - Whiddon Memorial Scholarship
Janean D. Watkins Overcoming Adversity Scholarship
Recognizing that nature is vital to sustaining life, I want to contribute to restoring the balance the ecosystems so the environment can thrive. But before I can protect and be a voice for the voiceless, I need to study the field first. In August, I was admitted to Kansas State University for their bachelor’s biology program. By acquiring my degree in biology I will have the knowledge I need about life and ecosystems to learn how to protect them and educate others on why it's important. I believe that if enough people care enough, the environment can recover and thrive. If we can’t get through to the next generation then I believe we won’t be able to save Earth. I want to be the change that is needed in the world. My decision to pursue biology is not solely based on the rewards and innovation, but also on my commitment to making a difference. I hope to make an impact that leads to making the planet healthy and sustainable.
Young Women in STEM Scholarship
1. My name is Sydney (Reagan) Bush and I am a senior in high school. I grew up on a rural farm where I was surrounded by animals and the outdoors. I’ve always had a special connection with the earth because of this. I’ve always known I wanted to work to protect and save the most vulnerable in our society. Living in a rural area, people are often not kind to strays, rodents, or even their livestock. Witnessing this at a young age but not having the voice to fight for them has led me to want to dedicate my life to saving animals and their habitats. After witnessing the abuse that livestock faced, I became a vegetarian in first grade. Since then, I became a vegan to help reduce pollution, animal harm and abuse, health issues, and to help spread awareness about how livestock is a large contributor to pollution globally. Next year, I am attending Kansas State University to study biology and complete my bachelor’s degree. I want my degree in biology to be able to protect the natural world around me. The environment is being destroyed and we are seeing the negative effects it's having on the animals, plants, soils, oceans, etc. My goal is to further my education to positively impact my community. Completing my degree is a stepping stone toward becoming an advocate for the environment and all animals. I believe too many people don’t care about human impact on the environment. I want to work to protect nature from destruction. To protect the natural world, I need to be educated about how life functions. As the first in my family to embark on this higher education journey, I'm aware of the numerous unknowns that lie ahead. College is daunting and a large expense that I’m unsure how to afford. But determined to help the voiceless, I'm ready to embark on the next chapter of my life.

Learner Math Lover Scholarship
Early in elementary school, I realized math always came easy to me. I started elementary school late because of family complications but even as I fell behind in other subjects, I always excelled in math. Math was the first reason I was excited to attend school in the mornings. To me, math is more than “just” a subject within school. Math is a passion that influences my life. I use math every day and I will continue to in my field of study in college.
When I was young, I practiced my schoolwork all the time but I spent the majority of the time enjoying solving math problems. I never enjoyed subjects that don’t have a definitive answer such as literature or writing, where the answer can be up to interpretation. Math always having (an) answer(s) made me favor it over others. I began joining math clubs and groups to enrich my knowledge and expanded my learning with other like-minded individuals. I was in Math Wings for years and joined math competitions in middle school. Competing against other students was an amazing experience and I loved it for the years I did. In middle school, I started taking the ‘advanced math’ offered, this allowed me to be a full grade ahead in math. As high school started, I haven’t had time to be in math clubs anymore but I have taken a math course all four years of high school.

To effectively address the environmental destruction seen today, it is crucial to understand the interactions between ecosystems and human interferences. Due to the high demand for resources and space, the importance of the environment is being overlooked. While attending college I will gain a deep understanding of the ecosystem, climate change, and conservation efforts. This information will provide me with a foundation to analyze and find solutions for the ongoing environmental demolition. However, in finding solutions, I will advocate for the environment through the education of others.
