Private (PVT) Henry Walker Minority Scholarship
If given the opportunity, I would dedicate myself to revitalizing underserved neighborhoods in my community. I am from Birmingham, Alabama where there are communities that have too often been overlooked, underfunded, and left behind. Growing up in public housing, I know firsthand what it feels like to live in a place full of potential but limited resources. I’ve seen how economic barriers, struggling schools, and neglected spaces can shape how people see themselves and their futures. My experiences have fueled my desire to be part of the solution and to create lasting change for families who just need someone to invest in their possibilities.
Birmingham is a city built on strength and resilience, but many of its neighborhoods still bear the weight of economic inequality. Growing up, I attended schools that lacked access to updated technology, extracurricular opportunities, and consistent funding. Many of my peers were talented and intelligent, but without exposure to new experiences or mentorship, their potential often went unnoticed. These environments can create a cycle where students feel stuck, unable to see a future beyond their immediate surroundings. I was fortunate to have parents, mentors, and educators who encouraged me to dream bigger and because of that, I want to ensure others have the same support and opportunities.
If money weren’t an issue, I would create a Community Revitalization and Empowerment Program focused on three key areas: education, financial literacy, and neighborhood renewal. The first component would focus on supporting underfunded schools by providing after-school programs, tutoring, and scholarship guidance to help students prepare for college and careers. Too many students lose confidence simply because they lack access to resources that help them compete on a level playing field. I would work to bring those resources directly into the schools and communities that need them most.
The second component would focus on financial empowerment for families. Many people in public housing or low-income communities have never been taught how to budget, save, or build credit. I would partner with local organizations and banks to offer free financial literacy workshops, helping residents understand how to manage money and create generational stability. Economic empowerment is one of the most effective ways to break cycles of poverty and give families the tools to take control of their futures.
Lastly, I would invest in neighborhood beautification and redevelopment; cleaning up parks, improving community centers, and transforming vacant lots into safe, usable spaces for children and families. It shows residents that their community matters, that their environment reflects their worth. It’s about more than just fresh paint or new playgrounds, but restoring dignity and belonging.
This mission is deeply personal to me because I’ve lived the reality I hope to change. I know the difference it makes when someone believes in you, when you have access to safe environments and real opportunities. I also know the pain of watching talented, motivated individuals lose sight of their dreams because they didn’t have the support or visibility they deserved. Revitalizing underserved neighborhoods means investing in people. It means giving hope, opportunity, and ownership back to the community.

Leadership, resilience, selflessness, focus, and work ethic are more than traits I strive for, they define how I approach every challenge and opportunity in my life. As a young African-American woman pursuing a degree in Biology Pre-Health with plans to become a physical therapist, I have made it my mission to lead with purpose, work with passion, and create a legacy of excellence for those who come after me.
Growing up around sports, I was fascinated not just by the athletes but by the people behind the scenes—the trainers who kept them healthy and strong. When my great-grandmother passed away from COVID-19, I saw firsthand the power of compassionate, skilled healthcare. That experience, while heartbreaking, strengthened my resilience and solidified my desire to help others heal. It showed me that resilience is not just about pushing through challenges, but about transforming pain into purpose.
As a Golden Ambassador at Alabama State University, I’ve had the privilege of representing my university at official events, working closely with students, alumni, and executive leadership, including the University President and Board of Trustees. This role has allowed me to display strong leadership and communication skills while maintaining professionalism and focus in every interaction. Balancing this prestigious role with my academic responsibilities has strengthened my work ethic and determination. Being a Golden Ambassador requires commitment, poise, and the ability to adapt quickly to different environments, all while embodying the values and excellence of Alabama State University. It has also made me more resilient, as I’ve learned to navigate diverse situations and uphold the reputation of my institution with confidence and integrity. This position constantly reminds me that leadership is about more than being seen, but it’s about being dependable, prepared, and purposeful in service to others.
Being unselfish is a core value I live by. Whether volunteering in the community, helping classmates study, or assisting athletes in recovery, I find fulfillment in giving my time and energy to help others succeed. I’ve learned that the most impactful leaders are those who put others first and create opportunities for collective growth. Attending an HBCU has deepened this understanding because our community thrives on mutual support, shared goals, and the idea that when one of us rises, we all do.
Focus and determination guide my academic journey. Balancing demanding coursework, hands-on training, and leadership activities requires consistency and a strong work ethic. I remind myself daily that my education is not just for me—it’s for the patients and athletes I will one day serve. My long-term goal is to earn a doctorate in physical therapy. I want to not only represent excellence but also increase diversity in a field where African-American professionals are the minority. Representation matters because it breaks stereotypes and shows others that their dreams are valid and achievable.
Leadership means creating pathways where none existed before. It means using my education and voice to empower others, advocate for equity, and leave a lasting impact. My work ethic and determination are rooted in a belief that success is about persistence and purpose.
Receiving this scholarship would allow me to continue pursuing higher education with greater focus, confidence, and peace of mind. But more importantly, it would allow me to continue building a legacy of compassion, excellence, and leadership, continuing to put one foot infant of the other and showing those who come after me what is possible when you stay focused.
