My name is Susanna Fish and I am an aspiring professional high diver from Hopkins Minnesota. I am currently pursuing a degree in computer engineering while also trying to attain my dream of having a career in high diving. For my first two years of college, I competed for the University of Minnesota's D1 Swimming and Diving team, and now I have retired to focus on school and high diving (diving from 20+ meters for women). As I was reading about the scholarship donor, I was interested to see that Samantha swam at Orono under Coach Pete. My family just moved to Orono and two of my brothers swim and dive for Orono's Swim and Dive team. I strive to enrich the lives of my Minnesota community by setting a good example. I competed in a Red Bull Cliff diving event in August and was shocked to hear how many people, both that I know and didn't know, had seen and heard about me competing in this competition. Although my social media following is not huge, it has greatly increased over the last year due to my high diving. If I continue on this path, which I hope I do, I imagine my following could increase a lot more. I already have heard my name as a conversation topic probably more than I am comfortable with, but I realize that this is something that comes with my dream. This has made me think a lot about the impression I would like to make on others, both online and offline. There are several things that I would like to promote to my community as more and more people know who I am. The first is kindness. I want to use every opportunity I have to be kind to others. There is so much bullying and judgment in this world and I never want to contribute to that. I want to feel loved and accepted by others and I want people to feel loved and accepted by me as well. To do this, I will do my best to be kind to everyone I interact with, both physically and electronically, even when it's hard because you never know what is going on in someone else's life. Another thing I want to share with people is some of my experiences and the lessons I have learned from them. For example, I have experienced a rollercoaster of emotions throughout my life as an athlete. I grew up a competitive gymnast and had dreams of being a D1 gymnast, but I broke my back and it ended my career, which was devastating. I eventually found diving, which was amazing and eventually led me to high diving, which I thought I could only dream of. There is a lot more to the story, but one major lesson I have learned is that when one door closes, another one opens, and everything happens for a reason. Another thing I would love to contribute to is the conversation around mental health. I have had many struggles with my mental health and am working daily to manage it. I feel that I am constantly trying to find different answers, solutions, and people that might have had similar experiences to me. I'm not sure what that might look like, but I think it is such an important topic and I would love it if I could potentially help someone else that has had similar experiences to me.
