Harvest Scholarship for Women Dreamers
My “Pie in the Sky” goal is to become a hospice music therapist and eventually help create programs that bring comfort, dignity, and emotional peace to patients and families at the end of life. It is a dream that feels both deeply inspiring and slightly out of reach — not because I question it, but because of the responsibility it carries. Sitting beside someone in their final chapter requires compassion, strength, and courage. That is the kind of work I feel called to do.
This dream was sparked in two places: through serving as a volunteer firefighter and through my own experience with the healing power of music.
As a volunteer firefighter, I have witnessed life at its most fragile. I have responded to emergencies where families were overwhelmed with fear and uncertainty. While we are trained to stabilize physical crises, I began to notice something deeper — the emotional weight people carry in moments of vulnerability. I learned that presence matters just as much as action. Sometimes the most powerful thing you can offer someone is calm reassurance and steady compassion.
At the same time, music has always grounded me. While balancing three jobs, full-time college coursework, church involvement, and emergency calls, music became my place of restoration. It helped me process stress, regulate my emotions, and feel connected even during exhausting seasons. I began to understand that music does more than entertain — it heals.
That realization shaped my dream.
Hospice care is sacred work. It is not about curing illness, but about providing comfort, emotional support, and dignity. As a music therapist in hospice settings, I would use evidence-based interventions to reduce anxiety, ease pain perception, support memory recall, and create meaningful final moments for patients and their loved ones. Music can bring familiarity when cognition fades. It can open a conversation when words feel too heavy. It can help families say goodbye in a way that feels connected rather than clinical.
Right now, this dream feels just beyond my reach — and that is what makes it a “Pie in the Sky.” To get there, I must continue excelling academically and complete specialized training in music therapy, including certification and clinical internships in healthcare and hospice environments. I will need to develop emotional resilience and seek mentors who understand end-of-life care. I know this path will challenge me, but I am not afraid of meaningful work.
Working three jobs while attending college full-time and maintaining merit roll status has strengthened my discipline and determination. Serving in my church community has reinforced the value of compassion and consistent service. Volunteering as a firefighter has taught me courage in moments of crisis. Each of these experiences is shaping me into someone capable of handling both the emotional weight and the privilege of hospice care.
My dream is not about recognition. It is about presence. It is about sitting beside someone in their final days and offering peace through something as universal as music. It is about helping families feel supported during their most tender moments.
When women dream boldly, we do not only change our own lives — we change the lives of those we serve. My “Pie in the Sky” may feel big, but I am already taking courageous steps toward it.
And I am ready to keep going.
Priscilla Shireen Luke Scholarship
Service has never been optional in my life; it is a responsibility I carry with intention. Whether responding to emergencies as a volunteer firefighter, serving through my church community, or balancing work and academics, I strive to live in a way that actively uplifts others.
As a volunteer firefighter, I have witnessed people on some of the most difficult days of their lives. In those moments, service requires more than physical endurance and technical skill; it demands compassion and composure. When families are overwhelmed by fear, simply offering reassurance while performing my duties can bring a sense of stability. These experiences have shaped my character, teaching me courage, discipline, and empathy. They have also shown me that helping others does not end when the emergency is over — emotional healing often continues long after the crisis fades.
My commitment to serving others also extends into my church community. I actively volunteer at church-led outreach events, assist with organizing donation drives, and participate in community gatherings that support families in need. Through mentoring younger members and helping coordinate service projects, I have learned that consistent, small acts of faith and kindness build stronger communities. My involvement in church reinforces my belief that service should be selfless and ongoing, not dependent on recognition.
In addition to volunteering, I work three jobs while attending college full-time. Balancing these responsibilities requires discipline, sacrifice, and strong time management. Despite long hours and demanding schedules, I remain committed to academic excellence and have consistently maintained merit roll status. Supporting myself financially while excelling academically has strengthened my resilience and deepened my drive. I understand that ambition is not simply about setting goals; it is about persevering through challenges with focus and determination.
My experiences in both emergency service and community outreach have inspired my career goal of becoming a music therapist. Through my volunteer firefighting work, I have seen firsthand how trauma affects individuals long after physical wounds are treated. I want to be part of the healing process that follows a crisis. Music therapy uniquely combines psychology, neuroscience, and creative expression to support emotional recovery. Music can help regulate anxiety, process trauma, and restore a sense of control when words feel insufficient.
In the future, I plan to work in hospitals, rehabilitation centers, and community programs where I can use evidence-based musical interventions to support individuals facing mental health challenges, disabilities, or medical hardships. I am especially passionate about providing accessible services to underserved communities and first responders who often carry unseen emotional burdens. In the long term, I hope to contribute to the development of programs that integrate music therapy into trauma recovery and community wellness initiatives.
Priscilla Shireen Luke’s legacy of spreading hope resonates deeply with me because hope is at the center of everything I strive to do. Service is not confined to one role or title — it is reflected in how we respond to crisis, support our communities, and pursue careers that prioritize healing.
Through perseverance, faith, and dedication, I am committed to building a future where compassion and creativity work together to leave the world better than I found it.
ADHDAdvisor Scholarship for Health Students
I have been actively supporting others with their mental health through everyday presence, listening, and compassion. Many of my friends experience anxiety, depression, grief, or overwhelming stress, and I make it a priority to be someone they can talk to without fear of judgment. I offer emotional support by listening attentively, validating their feelings, and reminding them that they are not alone. While I am not a professional, I understand how powerful it can be simply to show up, to check in consistently, and to create a safe space where people feel seen and heard.
Through these experiences, I have learned the importance of patience, empathy, and emotional awareness. I have also learned when to encourage others to seek additional support when their struggles extend beyond what I can help with alone. Helping my friends through their mental health challenges has reinforced my desire to pursue a career centered on emotional care and healing.
I plan to use my studies in music therapy, with a focus on hospice care, to provide meaningful emotional support to individuals and families during some of the most vulnerable moments of their lives. Music has a unique ability to express emotions that words often cannot, and I want to use it as a therapeutic tool to bring comfort, connection, and peace to those facing illness, loss, and end-of-life transitions. Through my education, I aim to develop the clinical skills and ethical understanding needed to support patients holistically—addressing not only their emotional well-being, but also honoring their personal stories, identities, and experiences.
In my future career, I hope to create moments of calm, dignity, and emotional relief for individuals and their loved ones. By combining empathy, music, and therapeutic practice, I intend to continue supporting mental and emotional health in a way that is both compassionate and deeply human.
Rainbow Futures Scholarship
Growing up, the realization that I was different came with a mix of confusion and fear. In my small town, conversations about sexuality were rare, and identities outside of rigid expectations were often misunderstood or ignored. As I began to understand that I was bisexual, I struggled to find language for what I felt, let alone acceptance. I became aware of hushed whispers and sideways glances when I started expressing myself more authentically. School dances felt like emotional minefields, where assumptions about who I should be attracted to left little room for someone like me. Sports teams and social groups often felt like exclusive spaces where I did not fully belong, reinforcing a sense of isolation during years when belonging felt especially important.
Everything began to change when I discovered an online community for LGBTQ+ teens. For the first time, I encountered people who shared similar experiences, including the unique challenges of being bisexual and feeling misunderstood even within broader conversations about sexuality. Reading their stories and participating in discussions helped me realize that my identity was valid and that I was not alone. This sense of belonging gave me the courage to come out to my family. While the moment was filled with trepidation and vulnerability, it was also filled with hope. Sharing my truth marked the beginning of a journey toward self-acceptance, confidence, and resilience.
Navigating the world as a bisexual individual has not been without its challenges. I have encountered discrimination in both subtle and overt forms, from dismissive comments and stereotypes to moments where my identity was questioned or minimized. I have experienced situations where I felt my relationships were invalidated or my identity was treated as a phase rather than a reality. These experiences revealed how deeply prejudice and misunderstanding can affect a person’s sense of self-worth. Rather than allowing these moments to discourage me, they strengthened my resolve to advocate for change. I became involved in local LGBTQ+ organizations, volunteering my time to support outreach efforts, promote inclusivity, and help create safe spaces for others who may feel unseen or unheard. Through this work, I discovered my passion for social justice and the power of standing up for marginalized communities.
As I look toward higher education, I see it as a vital tool for meaningful change. I aspire to study law with the goal of becoming a civil rights attorney specializing in LGBTQ+ issues. A legal education would equip me with the skills and knowledge necessary to challenge discriminatory policies, advocate for inclusive legislation, and provide legal support to individuals whose rights have been overlooked. I want to transform personal experience into purposeful action by helping create systems that protect and uplift people of all identities.
Receiving this scholarship would ease the financial burden of tuition and allow me to fully dedicate myself to my studies and advocacy work. More than financial assistance, it would represent belief in my potential and my commitment to building a more just society. Investing in my education is not only an investment in my future, but in the future of a more inclusive and equitable world for the bisexual community and the broader LGBTQ+ community as a whole.
Sabrina Carpenter Superfan Scholarship
Sabrina Carpenter is more than a pop artist to me; she represents growth, resilience, and the courage to remain authentic in an industry that often rewards conformity. My admiration for her extends far beyond her success or recognizable voice. It comes from watching her evolve over time—transitioning from a child performer into a confident artist who has found her own voice while remaining true to herself.
What resonates with me most is Sabrina’s songwriting. Her lyrics capture complex emotions with honesty and vulnerability, making her music feel both deeply personal and universally relatable. She writes about growth, self-reflection, heartbreak, and confidence in a way that feels genuine rather than forced. Listening to her music often feels like having an honest conversation with someone who understands the uncertainty and emotional challenges of growing up. During difficult moments in my own life, her music has offered comfort and a sense of understanding when words felt inadequate.
This connection to music as a source of comfort has strongly influenced my desire to become a music therapist, particularly in hospice care. I have always believed that music has a unique ability to reach people when traditional communication falls short. In hospice settings, patients and families often experience overwhelming emotions—fear, grief, reflection, and love—all at once. Music can provide peace, spark meaningful memories, and create moments of connection during a deeply vulnerable time. I want to use music not just as an art form, but as a therapeutic tool to bring comfort, dignity, and emotional support to those nearing the end of life.
Sabrina Carpenter’s journey has inspired me to pursue this path with confidence and creativity. Watching her take risks, experiment with her sound, and continue growing as an artist has encouraged me to trust my own voice and passions. She reminds me that growth is not linear and that authenticity is more powerful than perfection. Her resilience motivates me to stay committed to my goals, even when the journey feels uncertain or challenging.
Ultimately, Sabrina Carpenter inspires me to believe in the healing power of music and the importance of staying true to oneself. As I pursue a career in music therapy, I hope to carry those same values into my work—using music to create moments of peace, connection, and compassion for individuals and families during their most difficult times. Her influence continues to shape not only my creativity, but also my purpose and future aspirations.
Bick First Generation Scholarship
Being a first-generation college student is both a challenge and a source of deep pride for me. My mother never had the opportunity to finish high school, yet she instilled in me the value of hard work, perseverance, and education. Watching her navigate life without the academic opportunities she deserved motivated me to pursue a future that honors her sacrifices. Attending college is not only a personal goal, but a responsibility I carry for my family and the generations that come after me.
Entering higher education without guidance has often felt overwhelming. I did not have parents who could walk me through the college application process, explain financial aid, or help me understand academic expectations. Much of what I have learned came through trial and error. There were moments when I felt like I did not belong, surrounded by peers who seemed more prepared or supported. Instead of allowing these feelings to hold me back, I chose to push forward. I sought mentors, asked questions, and committed myself fully to learning how to succeed in an unfamiliar system.
In addition to being a full-time student, I currently work three jobs to support myself and stay financially afloat. Balancing work, classes, and personal responsibilities requires constant discipline and resilience. There are long days that begin early and end late, leaving little room for rest. Despite these challenges, I remain dedicated to my education because I know it is the pathway to a more stable future. Working multiple jobs has strengthened my time-management skills, independence, and determination, and it has reinforced how deeply I value the opportunity to earn my degree.
Receiving this scholarship would be truly life-changing. Financial stress is a constant weight, and this support would allow me to focus more fully on my academic and professional goals rather than solely on survival. With reduced financial pressure, I could dedicate more time to my coursework, volunteer experiences, and professional development, all of which are essential as I prepare for a career in music therapy.
My goal is to become a music therapist working in hospice care, where I can use music to bring comfort and emotional support to individuals and families during their most vulnerable moments. Music has the power to connect, heal, and communicate when words fall short. This scholarship would not only support my education but also help me continue a journey rooted in compassion, service, and meaningful impact. By investing in me, you would be helping me transform hardship into healing for others.
Vision of Music Scholarship
Music therapy is the career I aspire to pursue because it allows me to combine my deep love for music with a genuine desire to help others. Music has always been more than just sound to me; it has been a source of comfort, expression, and connection throughout my life. I have seen how music can reach people in ways that words sometimes cannot, and that realization has shaped my passion for becoming a music therapist. My long-term goal is to work in hospice care, where I believe music can bring peace, dignity, and emotional support to individuals during the final stages of life.
One of my biggest inspirations is Taylor Swift, not only for her musical talent but for the way she connects with people through her songwriting. Her ability to tell stories, express complex emotions, and make listeners feel understood has shown me how powerful music can be when it is used with intention and empathy. Watching how her music resonates with people across different ages, cultures, and life experiences has strengthened my belief that music is a universal language. This inspiration has encouraged me to explore how music can be used therapeutically, not just for entertainment, but as a meaningful tool for healing and connection.
My interest in hospice care specifically comes from my belief that music can offer comfort during moments that are often filled with fear, uncertainty, and emotional pain. In hospice settings, patients and their families face incredibly difficult experiences, and traditional communication may feel overwhelming or inadequate. Music therapy offers an alternative way to provide support. Through familiar songs, gentle melodies, or even patient-preferred music, individuals can experience reduced anxiety, emotional release, and moments of peace. Music can also help evoke cherished memories, allowing patients to reconnect with meaningful moments from their lives and share those experiences with loved ones.
What makes music therapy so powerful is its ability to meet people where they are emotionally, physically, and spiritually. In hospice care, the goal is not to cure but to comfort, and music aligns perfectly with that mission. Whether it is helping someone relax, express emotions they struggle to verbalize, or simply feel less alone, music therapy can greatly improve quality of life. I want to be someone who can offer that sense of calm and understanding during such a vulnerable time.
Ultimately, I hope to be remembered for helping others through music. My goal is not fame or recognition, but to make a meaningful difference in the lives of patients and their families. I want to create moments of connection, comfort, and healing that people can hold onto even after loss. By pursuing a career in music therapy, I hope to leave a legacy rooted in compassion, empathy, and the belief that music has the power to bring peace when it is needed most.
Therapist Impact Fund: NextGen Scholarship
My journey toward mental health has not been a straight path, but a winding one shaped by deeply personal experiences. Growing up, I witnessed the impact of mental health challenges within my own family. Rather than leaving me discouraged, these experiences sparked a strong desire to understand the human mind and to help others navigate similar struggles. They taught me compassion, empathy, and resilience—qualities that are essential for anyone pursuing a career in mental health.
These early experiences also inspired a strong commitment to advocacy. I became motivated to support individuals facing mental health challenges and sought opportunities to serve diverse communities. Volunteering in crisis centers and support groups allowed me to see firsthand how vital culturally sensitive care truly is. Through this work, I learned that effective mental health services must be accessible to everyone, regardless of background, income, or location. Understanding and respecting diverse perspectives has become a core part of my professional philosophy.
If I could make one meaningful change to today’s mental healthcare system, it would be to integrate mental health services more fully into primary care settings. Embedding mental health professionals—such as therapists, counselors, and psychiatric nurses—within primary care clinics would address many ongoing barriers to care. This approach would improve access, reduce stigma, and create a more streamlined experience for patients.
Integrating care would make it easier for individuals to seek help, as many people already visit primary care providers regularly. Receiving mental health support in these familiar settings would normalize mental healthcare as part of overall wellness. Additionally, primary care physicians are often the first professionals to notice signs of mental health concerns. With proper training and on-site mental health staff, issues could be identified and treated earlier, preventing them from becoming more severe.
Teletherapy has also played an important role in my life, especially as a college student balancing a busy schedule. Its convenience and accessibility allow individuals to receive care from their own homes, reducing geographical barriers. Teletherapy can be especially beneficial for diverse communities by offering flexible scheduling, multiple language options, and culturally responsive services. However, challenges remain. The digital divide prevents some individuals from accessing teletherapy due to limited internet access or technological skills. Additionally, the lack of in-person interaction can make it harder for some people to build strong therapeutic connections.
To better serve diverse populations, future efforts must focus on closing this digital gap through affordable internet access and user-friendly platforms designed for different age groups and skill levels. Expanding language options, incorporating culturally relevant content, and training therapists in culturally responsive teletherapy practices are also essential steps toward more inclusive care.
Looking ahead, I aspire to become a compassionate and effective music therapist who creates a safe, welcoming space for healing. I hope to empower individuals from all backgrounds to discover their inner strength and resilience. By combining my personal experiences with academic knowledge and practical skills, I am confident I can make a meaningful contribution to the field of mental health and help others on their journey toward well-being.
Cariloop’s Caregiver Scholarship
My experience in caregiving began unexpectedly during my first semester of school when I worked as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) at a local nursing home. Assigned to the overnight shift, I balanced my studies with the demanding yet deeply rewarding responsibilities of caring for the residents. Although the nursing home's closure marked an abrupt end to my time there, the experience left an indelible mark on my life, shaping my compassion, resilience, and career aspirations. The work involved everything from assisting with personal hygiene and mobility to administering medications and providing emotional support. I witnessed firsthand the fragility of life and the importance of human connection, which ignited a passion for healthcare and a commitment to making a difference in the lives of others.
Working as a CNA was a paradox, encompassing both the best and worst aspects of my life. The most challenging part was undoubtedly the inevitable loss of residents. Forming close bonds with these individuals, sharing moments of laughter and companionship, made their passing incredibly difficult. Yet, amidst the sadness, there was immense fulfillment in being able to bring comfort and joy to their lives. Whether it was through a simple conversation, a gentle touch, or providing essential care, I cherished the opportunity to make a positive impact during their vulnerable moments. The residents taught me invaluable lessons about resilience, gratitude, and the importance of human connection, shaping my perspective on life and my commitment to serving others.
Caregiving has made me a more empathetic and understanding person. I've learned to appreciate the small things in life and to view challenges as opportunities for growth. My goal is to use this experience to create a more compassionate and supportive world for everyone. This scholarship would allow me to focus on my studies and pursue my dream of working in healthcare, where I can continue to make a difference in people's lives.
Receiving this scholarship would significantly alleviate the financial burden of pursuing my education, allowing me to focus more intently on my studies and future goals. Inspired by my experiences as a CNA, I am determined to pursue a career in healthcare where I can continue to make a meaningful difference in the lives of others. Specifically in Music therapy still primarily focusing in Hospice Care. This scholarship would not only enable me to complete my education but also empower me to become a compassionate and skilled healthcare professional, dedicated to providing exceptional care to those in need.
Taylor Swift Fan Scholarship
Taylor Swift's career, marked by its authenticity and evolution, has produced numerous memorable performances. Among these, her rendition of "All Too Well (10 Minute Version)" at the 2022 MTV Video Music Awards stands out as particularly moving due to its raw emotionality, intimate staging, and the historical significance of the song within her discography. This performance not only showcased Swift's growth as an artist but also underscored the profound connection she shares with her fanbase.
The emotional depth of Swift's "All Too Well (10 Minute Version)" performance at the 2022 VMAs was undeniably powerful. Stripped down to just Swift and her guitar, the performance allowed her raw vocals and poignant lyrics to take center stage. Her ability to convey the pain, nostalgia, and resilience embedded in the song resonated deeply with the audience, creating an atmosphere charged with shared emotion. Each verse felt like a personal revelation, drawing viewers into the narrative and evoking a sense of empathy that transcended the venue.
Beyond the emotional resonance, the performance's intimacy and historical context contributed to its impact. Swift's choice to perform solo, with minimal staging, created a sense of vulnerability that amplified the song's message. Knowing the song's history and its significance to Swift's journey as an artist added another layer of depth. For fans who had followed her career and connected with the song over the years, witnessing the full version performed live was a cathartic experience. It was a moment of collective healing and celebration, highlighting the enduring power of music to connect and uplift.
Build and Bless Leadership Scholarship
My faith has transformed my leadership style by instilling empathy, resilience, and a deep commitment to serving others. Initially, trauma distanced me from religion, creating a leadership void. However, the love and support from my adoptive parents, friends, and church community sparked a profound change. This journey taught me the importance of compassion and understanding, which now guides my leadership decisions. It has allowed me to lead with authenticity, encouraging those around me to find their own voices and embrace their unique strengths, fostering a supportive and inclusive environment where everyone feels valued and heard.
My faith has profoundly shaped my leadership, emphasizing empathy, inclusivity, and service. I believe in fostering environments where everyone feels valued and empowered. For instance, I actively engaged with my church community, aiming to create a welcoming space for all. I initiated several events, from casual coffee gatherings to group discussions on faith and current events, making sure everyone felt comfortable sharing their thoughts and experiences.
My willingness to share personal stories and acknowledge my vulnerabilities inspired others to confront their own doubts and insecurities. Seeing the transformation in others as they found their voice and connected with each other reinforced my belief in the power of authentic leadership. This experience illuminated the importance of being genuine and vulnerable in leadership, showing that true strength lies in building meaningful connections and offering mutual support, ultimately leading to a more compassionate and resilient community.
My faith has profoundly shaped my leadership style, instilling in me a deep sense of compassion, empathy, and service to others. I believe that faith empowers individuals to lead with authenticity and integrity, prioritizing the well-being and dignity of those around them.
I remember a time when I volunteered at a local homeless shelter. The environment was often chaotic, and residents felt isolated and overlooked. Recognizing this, I used my faith as a guiding principle. I organized weekly faith-based support groups, where we shared stories, prayed together, and offered each other encouragement. Through these sessions, I witnessed firsthand the transformative power of community and faith-based support. People who had felt lost and forgotten started to find hope and belonging. The experience reinforced my belief in the importance of empathy, active listening, and providing a safe, nurturing environment, which are core tenets of my faith. This experience solidified my vision of leading with a Christ-centered approach. It involved prioritizing love, service, and unwavering support. It means actively seeking to understand each person's unique needs and preferences, valuing their life stories, and creating an environment where they feel seen, heard, and respected.
SnapWell Scholarship
During my junior year, I was juggling a demanding course load, an intense extracurricular schedule, and a part-time job. The pressure to excel in all areas led to chronic stress, anxiety, and physical exhaustion. I realized I was constantly operating on autopilot, neglecting my basic needs and losing sight of my well-being. One particularly difficult week, I found myself struggling to focus, experiencing frequent headaches, and feeling emotionally drained. It became clear that I couldn't sustain this pace without serious consequences.
Recognizing the need for change, I decided to make my mental, emotional, and physical health a priority. I started by setting realistic boundaries and learning to say "no" to commitments that would further stretch my resources. I incorporated regular exercise into my routine, even if it was just a short walk each day, and made a conscious effort to eat nutritious meals. I also prioritized sleep, aiming for at least seven hours each night. Most importantly, I sought support from a therapist, who helped me develop coping strategies for managing stress and anxiety. This experience taught me the importance of self-awareness and self-compassion. I learned that taking care of myself is not selfish but essential for my overall well-being and ability to thrive.
This experience has profoundly shaped how I prepare for my future. In school, I am more mindful of my workload and prioritize tasks based on their importance and my capacity. In my career, I plan to seek out workplaces that value work-life balance and promote employee well-being. In life, I am committed to maintaining healthy habits, setting boundaries, and seeking support when needed. I now understand that success is not just about achieving goals but also about nurturing my mental, emotional, and physical health along the way.
Becoming a hospice music therapist is a calling that blends a passion for music with a deep desire to provide comfort and support to those nearing the end of their lives. This path begins with a comprehensive education in music therapy, encompassing not only musical skills but also a thorough understanding of psychology, counseling techniques, and the specific needs of hospice patients. The goal is to develop a skill set that allows you to use music as a therapeutic tool, addressing the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of individuals facing life-limiting illnesses.
In practice, a hospice music therapist works closely with patients and their families to create personalized music experiences that promote relaxation, reduce pain and anxiety, and foster emotional expression. This might involve playing familiar songs, leading sing-alongs, assisting patients in writing their own music, or simply providing a comforting presence during moments of reflection. The therapist tailors each session to the individual's preferences and needs, ensuring that the music serves as a source of comfort, connection, and emotional release.
The benefits of music therapy in hospice are profound and far-reaching. For patients, it can provide a sense of control and normalcy in an environment often marked by uncertainty and loss. Music can evoke positive memories, facilitate communication, and offer a means of expressing emotions that may be difficult to articulate verbally. For families, music therapy can create opportunities for shared experiences, strengthen bonds, and provide solace during a challenging time. Ultimately, becoming a hospice music therapist is about using the power of music to enhance the quality of life for patients and their loved ones, offering moments of peace, connection, and meaning in the face of life's final journey.
This Woman's Worth Inc. Scholarship
Music has always been a powerful force in my life, a source of comfort, joy, and healing. The idea of channeling this passion into a career as a music therapist in hospice care resonates deeply with me. It's more than just a job; it's a calling to provide solace and support to individuals during one of the most vulnerable periods of their lives. I believe that everyone deserves dignity, peace, and connection, especially when facing the end of their journey, and I am driven to offer these through the unique medium of music.
The hospice environment presents a unique opportunity to make a profound impact. Patients often experience physical discomfort, emotional distress, and a sense of isolation. Music therapy can address these challenges by reducing pain and anxiety, fostering emotional expression, and promoting a sense of connection. Through personalized musical interventions, I can help patients find moments of joy, reminisce about cherished memories, and connect with their loved ones. Whether it's playing a favorite song, leading a gentle sing-along, or simply providing a calming soundscape, music can transcend the limitations of language and physical ability, offering a pathway to comfort and peace.
Music therapy plays a vital role in hospice care, offering multifaceted benefits that enhance the quality of life for patients and their families. By addressing physical, emotional, and spiritual needs, music therapy provides a holistic approach to end-of-life care.
One of the primary ways music therapy helps in hospice care is through pain management. Music can serve as a powerful distraction from physical discomfort, helping to reduce the perception of pain. Additionally, it stimulates the release of endorphins, the body's natural painkillers, offering a non-pharmacological method to alleviate suffering. Beyond pain management, music therapy offers significant emotional support. It provides a safe and expressive outlet for patients and their families to cope with complex emotions such as grief, anxiety, and fear. Through songwriting, music listening, or instrumental improvisation, individuals can process their feelings and find moments of peace and connection.
Moreover, music therapy aids in memory stimulation and spiritual support. Familiar songs can trigger cherished memories, helping patients reconnect with their past and maintain a sense of identity. This is particularly valuable for those with cognitive impairments. Spiritually, music can facilitate reflection, offering a sense of peace and connection to something greater, whether it be nature, a higher power, or simply a feeling of unity with loved ones. In essence, music therapy in hospice care enhances overall well-being by addressing physical, emotional, and spiritual needs, making the end-of-life journey more comfortable and meaningful.
I am committed to developing the skills and knowledge necessary to excel in this field. I plan to pursue a comprehensive education in music therapy, focusing on evidence-based practices and ethical considerations. I also recognize the importance of empathy, compassion, and cultural sensitivity in providing effective care. By actively listening to my patients, understanding their individual needs and preferences, and collaborating with the interdisciplinary hospice team, I can ensure that my interventions are tailored to their specific circumstances. Ultimately, my goal is to create a supportive and nurturing environment where patients feel heard, valued, and empowered to live each day to the fullest.
Henry Respert Alzheimer's and Dementia Awareness Scholarship
The stark reality of Alzheimer’s disease and other dementia-related illnesses became undeniably clear during my time as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA). Stepping into this role at the young age of seventeen, I was confronted with the profound impact these diseases have not only on the individuals afflicted but also on their surrounding community. I have always been a caring person. I care about my friends, family, and even strangers. Being a CNA showed me just how much. Within a year, I witnessed numerous residents—people I had grown to genuinely care for—suffer and ultimately succumb to the relentless progression of dementia. It was my first job, and I was thrown right into the mix. I didn’t just care for these people, either. I got to know them. This gave me a deeper understanding of how scary dementia really is. I saw how much they suffer, not only the patients but their families as well. My job was to care for them, and I did my best to help them through their tough times, but it never felt like enough. If I could go back in time, I’d tell my younger self to prepare for the heartbreak.
I am drawn to the nursing profession because of the powerful and meaningful influence that nurses can have on patients. I know that not all nurses are the same, but I want to find and live out a type of nursing that can meet a variety of needs. When I hear people say that nurses are angels in white wings, I do not necessarily think that the metaphor fits, but the intention of the metaphor comes across clearly. Nurses are individuals who help patients both through physical and mental well-being. It was while I was working as a nurse's aide that I realized that nurses are not simply caring for their patients, but, in many cases, they are caring for the emotional well-being of the patient and their family.
One of the most striking aspects of my experience as a nurse's aide was the frequent absence of family members. Often, it was the nursing staff who stepped in to fill this void, becoming de facto family for these vulnerable individuals. We shared moments of joy, offered comfort during times of distress, and provided a sense of connection in a world that was becoming increasingly confusing and isolating for them. This closeness made their suffering all the more poignant, yet it also illuminated a path forward for me. Witnessing the profound impact of these diseases and the critical role of compassionate care inspired me to pursue a career where I could make a meaningful difference in the lives of others.
I have always been passionate about music. This love for music has prompted me to seek a career that allows me to serve others through music. My goal is to provide solace, connection, and emotional support to individuals and families facing the challenge of Alzheimer’s disease and other dementia-related illnesses. I believe that music can transcend the barriers imposed by dementia, allowing for joy and moments of connection. I can connect with people on a deeper emotional level through music, and I can serve them in this capacity by being a music therapist. This scholarship would allow me to focus on my studies and accelerate my path towards being a qualified music therapist.
The Henry Respert Alzheimer's and Dementia Awareness Scholarship aligns perfectly with my goals. My ambition is to combine my musical talents with my genuine compassion to help alleviate the pain and fear often experienced by individuals and families facing a dementia diagnosis. I am confident that I can help those struggling with memory loss and other challenges associated with Alzheimer's by providing personalized, engaging, and soothing musical experiences, with the specific intent of unlocking memories, easing anxiety, and fostering meaningful connections. By receiving this scholarship, I can focus on providing exceptional care to patients in need.
Wicked Fan Scholarship
Theater has always held a special place in my heart, but my love for it truly flourished during the challenging times of the COVID-19 pandemic. With the world in turmoil and social interactions limited, musicals like "Wicked" and "Hamilton" became my sanctuary, offering a sense of normalcy and joy amidst the chaos.
"Wicked" particularly resonated with me during this period. When I found out the movie adaptation was being released, I couldn't contain my excitement. I decided to share this experience with my mother, and watching it together brought us closer than ever. The shared moments of laughter, tears, and awe as we watched the story of Elphaba and Glinda unfold on screen created a bond that we continue to cherish.
But the magic of "Wicked" didn't stop there. I found out one of my best friends loved "Wicked" as well. Our love for "Wicked" led us to create our own special bond, complete with "assigned roles" where she embodies the bubbly Glinda and I take on the role of the misunderstood Elphaba. Every time we sing together, whether it's "Defying Gravity" or "For Good," we feel a deeper connection and a sense of unity that strengthens our friendship.
Theater, and "Wicked" in particular, has been a beacon of light during a dark time. It has not only provided me with an escape but has also brought me closer to the people I care about. Through the power of music and storytelling, I have forged meaningful relationships and discovered new facets of myself. As I pursue my studies and future career, I hope to carry forward the lessons and joy that "Wicked" has brought into my life, using them to inspire and connect with others.
In conclusion, my love for "Wicked" goes beyond just being a fan of a musical. It represents resilience, connection, and the transformative power of theater. This scholarship would allow me to continue exploring my passion for the arts, and I am eager to see where this journey will take me.

Going to college is more than just an academic pursuit for me; it is a journey towards personal and professional fulfillment. As someone who aspires to become a music therapist, college represents a critical stepping stone that will enable me to develop the skills, knowledge, and experiences necessary to make a meaningful impact in the lives of others.
Firstly, college offers the opportunity to immerse myself in an environment where learning and growth are paramount. By studying subjects such as psychology, human development, and music theory, I will be able to gain a comprehensive understanding of how music can be used as a therapeutic tool to address various emotional, cognitive, and social needs.
Furthermore, college is a place where I can engage in hands-on experiences that are crucial for my future career in music therapy. Through internships, clinical placements, and collaborative projects, I will have the chance to apply theoretical knowledge in real-world settings. These practical experiences will not only enhance my skills but also allow me to build a network of professional contacts and mentors who can guide me on my path to becoming a successful music therapist.
In addition to academic and professional growth, college is also a time for personal development. It is a period where I can explore my passions, challenge my assumptions, and develop a deeper understanding of myself and the world around me. The diverse community of students and faculty will expose me to different perspectives and cultures, fostering a sense of empathy and compassion that is essential for a career in therapy. By participating in extracurricular activities, volunteer opportunities, and campus events, I will be able to cultivate leadership skills, resilience, and a sense of social responsibility.
Ultimately, my goal in attending college is to acquire the expertise and experience needed to provide effective and compassionate music therapy services. I am committed to using my education to help individuals improve their mental health, cope with stress, and enhance their overall well-being through the power of music. By pursuing a degree in music therapy, I hope to contribute to the growing field of creative arts therapies and advocate for the importance of holistic approaches to health and healing.
In conclusion, going to college means embarking on a transformative journey that will equip me with the tools and experiences necessary to achieve my dream of becoming a music therapist. It is an opportunity to grow academically, professionally, and personally, and to ultimately make a positive difference in the lives of others through the healing power of music.
Ashby & Graff Educational Support Award
In Chapter Two of "Real Insights" by John Graff, the author discusses the importance of emotional intelligence (EI) and how it has a profound effect on one's professional success and personal satisfaction. As someone who wishes to become a music therapist specializing in music therapy, I feel that the information in this chapter has a lot to do with my desired career field.
Emotional intelligence, as described by Graff, involves the ability to recognize, understand, and manage our own emotions, as well as the ability to recognize, understand, and influence the emotions of others. This concept is particularly pertinent to music therapy, where the therapeutic relationship and emotional connection between the therapist and the client are paramount. In my future career, developing a high level of emotional intelligence will be essential in order to effectively support and guide my clients through their emotional and psychological challenges.
After reading Chapter Two of "Real Insights," I believe a key takeaway is the importance of self-awareness in developing emotional intelligence. This is very important for anyone working in a therapeutic environment. In this chapter, John Graff emphasizes that self-awareness allows individuals to understand their own emotional triggers and responses, which is crucial for maintaining professionalism and empathy in these settings.
As a future music therapist, I know it is important that I am self-aware. As a therapist, I need to be able to remain attuned to my own emotions while providing a safe and supportive environment for my clients. This self-awareness will also help me to avoid burnout and maintain my own mental well-being, ensuring that I can consistently offer the best possible care to those I work with.
Empathy, or the ability to understand and share the feelings of others, is a critical aspect of emotional intelligence. This trait serves as a cornerstone of effective music therapy. Through empathy, I will be able to create a trusting, therapeutic alliance with my clients, fostering their emotional growth and healing.
Graff explains the role that social skills play in emotional intelligence, which are essential for building and sustaining positive relationships. In music therapy, robust social skills will allow me to communicate effectively with clients, their relatives, and other healthcare professionals. This collaborative approach is crucial for creating comprehensive treatment plans and guaranteeing that clients get holistic care. By honing my social skills, I will be better prepared to advocate for my clients and encourage the inclusion of music therapy into wider healthcare and educational systems.
Chapter two of John Graff's "Real Insights" provides great information about the importance of interpersonal skills such as empathy and emotional intelligence. I find this information especially relevant to my intended career field: music therapy. Music therapists can help patients feel better mentally and physically by providing emotional support, building therapeutic relationships, and putting in place individualized treatments. This requires empathy, self-awareness, social skills, and high emotional intelligence. This chapter gives me more motivation to continue to develop these essential skills on the path to becoming a music therapist.
TRAM Purple Phoenix Scholarship
As I reflect on my academic journey and personal experiences, I am driven by a profound belief in the transformative power of music therapy. My goal is to use my degree in music therapy to impact positive change for others, particularly those who have experienced emotional and psychological wounds.
Throughout my life, I have witnessed the profound impact that music can have on individuals. Music has the unique ability to transcend language barriers, evoke emotions, and foster connections. My personal experiences with music have shown me its potential to heal and bring solace to those in need. This realization has inspired me to pursue a career in music therapy, where I can harness the therapeutic power of music to help others.
Once I graduate with my degree in music therapy, I plan to work with diverse populations, including individuals with mental health challenges, trauma survivors, and those with developmental disabilities. Music therapy offers a holistic approach to healing, addressing not only the emotional and psychological aspects of an individual's well-being but also their physical and social needs. By using music as a therapeutic tool, I aim to create a safe and supportive environment where individuals can express themselves, process their emotions, and find comfort.
One of the most significant ways I plan to impact positive change is by working with trauma survivors. Trauma can leave deep emotional scars that are often difficult to articulate through words alone. Music therapy provides an alternative means of expression, allowing individuals to communicate their feelings and experiences in a non-verbal way. Through techniques such as improvisation, songwriting, and guided imagery, I can help trauma survivors explore their emotions, reduce anxiety, and build resilience. My goal is to empower these individuals to reclaim their sense of self and find hope and healing through the power of music.
In addition to working with trauma survivors, I am passionate about using music therapy to support individuals with mental health challenges. Mental health issues such as depression, anxiety, and PTSD can be debilitating and isolating. Music therapy offers a unique avenue for individuals to connect with their emotions, reduce stress, and improve their overall well-being. By incorporating techniques such as rhythmic entrainment, lyric analysis, and music-assisted relaxation, I can help individuals develop coping strategies, enhance their mood, and foster a sense of community and belonging.
Furthermore, I am committed to advocating for the inclusion of music therapy in various healthcare and educational settings. I believe that music therapy should be accessible to all individuals, regardless of their background or circumstances. By raising awareness about the benefits of music therapy and collaborating with other professionals, I hope to integrate music therapy into mainstream healthcare and education systems. This will ensure that more individuals have access to the healing power of music and can experience its positive impact on their lives.
In conclusion, my degree in music therapy, combined with my personal experiences and passion for helping others, will enable me to impact positive change in the lives of those who need it most. Through music therapy, I aim to provide a source of healing, comfort, and empowerment for individuals facing emotional and psychological challenges. By using music as a therapeutic tool, I hope to create a more compassionate and supportive world where everyone has the opportunity to experience the transformative power of music.

I want to work in hospice care as a music therapist. I have always had an interest in this field and am fascinated by the potential of music to help people, especially hospice patients, in end-of-life care. I am a firm believer that music has the capacity to make a real difference in the lives of patients by alleviating some of the pain and distress they experience during the final stages of their lives. I also enjoy working with patients and my colleagues in a collaborative setting to deliver the best care possible.
My experiences working as a junior firefighter when I was 16-18 and as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) at 17 provided me with valuable experience and helped me realize that my desire to make a difference has always been strong. Both of these roles taught me a lot, but perhaps the most important things that I learned were how to care for people in a compassionate way and what the true meaning of empathy is. My experiences also reinforced the importance of dedication to a cause. I have always wanted to help others, and my career goals mirror that desire. By studying for a degree in Human Development, I hope to use my education to make a meaningful impact and help improve the lives of others.
I firmly believe that hospice care is just as important, if not more important, than in-life care. I would like to transfer to a higher university at the end of Spring 2026. Pastor Thomas Rorie Jr. Christian Values Scholarship
My journey into Christianity began during a particularly challenging period in my life. I was grappling with feelings of confusion and a lack of direction. It was in January of this year when I decided to visit a local church. I hadn't been to church in years, but something inside me urged me to go. As I walked through the doors, I was immediately struck by the sense of warmth and community that filled the space. The people were welcoming, and the atmosphere was filled with a sense of peace that I hadn't felt in a long time.
The sermons I listened to spoke of hope, love, and redemption. These messages resonated deeply with me, as they seemed to address the very struggles I was facing. I began to attend services regularly, finding solace in the teachings of Jesus. The more I learned, the more I felt a profound sense of peace and belonging. It was as if I had found a missing piece of myself that I had been searching for all along.
My faith journey was not an overnight transformation. It was a gradual process, filled with moments of doubt and questioning. However, each step brought me closer to understanding the depth of God’s love and the purpose He had for my life. Through prayer, reading the Bible, and engaging with the church community, my faith grew stronger. I began to see the world and my place in it through a different lens. My newfound faith became a guiding light, helping me navigate life's challenges and inspiring me to be a better person.
This spiritual awakening also influenced my career aspirations. I have always had a passion for music and a desire to help others. It dawned on me that I could combine these two loves by becoming a music therapist, with a particular focus on hospice care. Music has a unique ability to touch the soul and provide comfort, and I wanted to use it to bring peace to those in their final stages of life. This realization was a defining moment for me, as it aligned my career goals with my faith and desire to serve others.
Receiving this scholarship would be a tremendous support for my academic and professional endeavors. Financial constraints have always been a significant concern, and this scholarship would alleviate much of that burden. It would allow me to focus on my studies without the constant worry of financial strain. I plan to pursue a degree in music therapy, with a focus on courses that delve into the therapeutic uses of music and the psychological needs of hospice patients. This scholarship would provide the resources I need to excel in my studies and gain the skills necessary to make a meaningful impact.
My academic journey is crucial in achieving my career goals. The field of music therapy requires a deep understanding of both music and psychology. I intend to immerse myself in coursework that covers music theory, therapy techniques, and the psychological aspects of patient care. Additionally, I plan to engage in internships and practical experiences that will allow me to apply what I’ve learned in real-world settings. This hands-on experience is invaluable, as it will prepare me to effectively support and comfort patients through music therapy.
Beyond the academic realm, this scholarship would also support my professional development. Attending conferences, workshops, and networking events are essential components of building a successful career in music therapy. These opportunities provide a platform to learn from experienced professionals, stay updated on the latest research, and connect with potential employers and collaborators. The financial support from this scholarship would enable me to participate in these events, further enhancing my knowledge and skills.
My future plans include working in hospice care facilities, providing music therapy to patients and their families. I envision creating a program that integrates music therapy into the standard care for hospice patients, demonstrating its benefits and advocating for its wider use. Music has the power to evoke emotions, trigger memories, and provide comfort. By incorporating music therapy into hospice care, I aim to enhance the quality of life for patients in their final days and provide emotional support to their loved ones.
In addition to working directly with patients, I also hope to contribute to the field through research and advocacy. There is a growing body of evidence supporting the effectiveness of music therapy, but more research is needed to fully understand its potential and optimize its application. I plan to engage in research projects that explore the impact of music therapy on hospice patients, contributing to the scientific knowledge base and advocating for its broader adoption in healthcare settings.
Furthermore, I aspire to educate others about the benefits of music therapy. This includes training healthcare professionals, caregivers, and volunteers on how to incorporate music into their care practices. By sharing my knowledge and experiences, I hope to inspire others to recognize the value of music therapy and integrate it into their work. This ripple effect has the potential to reach a wider audience and make a significant impact on the lives of many individuals.
Receiving this scholarship would be a crucial step in achieving these goals. It would provide the financial support needed to pursue my education, gain practical experience, and engage in professional development opportunities. With this support, I am confident that I can make a meaningful difference in the field of environmental science. I am passionate about finding sustainable solutions to pressing environmental issues, and this scholarship will enable me to dedicate my time and effort to research and initiatives that can drive real change.
Furthermore, the scholarship will allow me to connect with like-minded individuals and experts in the field, fostering collaborations that can amplify the impact of our collective efforts. By easing the financial burden, I will be able to focus more on my studies and less on financial constraints, ensuring that I can take full advantage of the educational opportunities available to me.
Ultimately, this scholarship is not just an investment in my future, but in the future of our planet. With the knowledge and skills I gain, I am determined to contribute to a more sustainable and environmentally-friendly world. Thank you for considering my application.

When I turned 18, I made the life-changing decision to leave my mother's house and begin living independently. This transition marked the beginning of a journey that has been both challenging and rewarding. Supporting myself entirely on my own has been my greatest achievement to date. It taught me resilience, responsibility, and the importance of perseverance.
The decision to leave was not an easy one. My mother was physically, mentally, and emotionally abusive, and the environment at home had become unbearable. I realized that in order to build a better future for myself, I needed to take control of my own life. With nothing but a few belongings and a determination to succeed, I set out on my own. This experience has shown me that I am capable of overcoming adversity and thriving in the face of uncertainty.
From a young age, I learned the value of hard work and financial independence. Starting at the age of 10, I began supporting myself by taking on various jobs around the neighborhood. I babysat for families, mowed lawns, shoveled snow, and did any odd jobs I could find. These early experiences instilled in me a strong work ethic and a sense of responsibility that has carried me through my adult life. By managing my own finances from such a young age, I developed the skills necessary to live independently and support myself fully.
Living alone has not been without its difficulties. From managing finances to balancing work and studies, I have faced numerous obstacles. However, each challenge has been a learning opportunity, helping me grow stronger and more self-reliant. I have learned to budget my expenses, prioritize my time, and seek out resources and support when needed. These skills have been invaluable in helping me navigate the complexities of independent living.
Despite the numerous obstacles I faced, I managed to maintain a 3.8 GPA throughout my academic journey. Balancing work, personal challenges, and my studies required immense dedication and time management skills. I often found myself studying late into the night after finishing my jobs or dealing with personal issues. My determination to succeed academically never wavered, and I made sure to prioritize my education, knowing it was the key to a better future. This high GPA is a testament to my resilience and unwavering commitment to achieving my goals, no matter the circumstances.
Looking to the future, I hope to achieve academic excellence and further my education. My goal is to become a music therapist specializing in hospice care. Music has always been a source of comfort and healing for me, and I want to use my passion for music to help others in their most vulnerable moments. I am committed to using my skills and experiences to contribute positively to my community and provide compassionate care to those in need.
Audrey Sherrill & Michael D'Ambrisi Music Scholarship
Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's quote, "Music is the universal language of mankind," captures the profound ability of music to transcend cultural, linguistic, and geographical barriers. This timeless assertion highlights how music can convey emotions, tell stories, and foster connections without the need for words. Regardless of one's background, music has an innate capacity to resonate with individuals on a deeply personal level, making it a powerful form of communication that unites people from all walks of life.
In today's interconnected world, Longfellow's idea is more relevant than ever. With the advent of digital platforms and global connectivity, music can now reach a broader audience, crossing borders and bridging gaps between diverse communities. This universal reach of music has the potential to foster understanding and empathy among people who might otherwise never have the chance to connect. In an era marked by division and discord, music stands as a beacon of unity and shared human experience.
As I pursue my career in music therapy, I envision making a positive impact by leveraging the universal language of music to bring comfort and solace to those in hospice care. My journey began when I became a CNA at the age of 17 and started working in nursing homes. It was during this time that I discovered my passion for hospice care. I witnessed firsthand the profound need for emotional support and comfort among patients and their families during such a challenging period. This experience solidified my desire to focus on hospice care, whether through the nursing program or my music degree.
I plan to stay at JCC and pursue my associate's degree in music, with the intention of transferring to a four-year school to earn my bachelor's degree and eventually, my master's. This educational path will equip me with the skills and knowledge necessary to become a music therapist specializing in hospice care. By continuing my education, I can ensure that I am fully prepared to provide the best possible support and comfort to those in need.
In my role as a music therapist, I aim to create personalized musical experiences that cater to the unique needs of each patient. Music therapy can help alleviate pain, reduce anxiety, and improve overall well-being. By incorporating patients' favorite songs or genres, I can evoke positive memories and emotions, providing a sense of familiarity and comfort. Additionally, music therapy can facilitate communication for those who may have difficulty expressing themselves verbally, allowing them to convey their feelings and experiences through the medium of music.
Furthermore, I hope to extend the benefits of music therapy to the families of patients. Hospice care is not only about supporting the individual but also about providing comfort and solace to their loved ones. Through group music therapy sessions, I can create an environment where families can come together, share their experiences, and find strength in their collective bond. Music has the power to create moments of connection and understanding, even in the face of adversity.
In conclusion, Longfellow's assertion that "Music is the universal language of mankind" holds profound truth in its ability to transcend barriers and unite people through shared emotional experiences. As I pursue my career in music therapy, I am committed to harnessing this universal language to make a positive impact in the lives of those in hospice care. By providing personalized musical experiences and fostering connections among patients and their families, I hope to bring comfort, solace, and moments of peace during challenging times. Through the power of music, I aim to create a lasting legacy of compassion and support in my local community.

Ever since I was a child, I’ve always had a deep-seated desire to help others. This passion led me to initially pursue a career in nursing at Jamestown Community College. However, as I delved deeper into my studies, I realized that nursing wasn’t quite the right fit for me. My true calling, I discovered, lay in the harmonious world of music.
I found immense joy in the idea of becoming a music therapist, with a particular focus on hospice care. Music has always been a powerful force in my life, and I believe in its ability to bring comfort and solace to those in their final stages of life. My goal is to use the skills and knowledge I acquire through my education to provide emotional and psychological support to patients, helping them find peace through the universal language of music.
When I was 17, I became a CNA and started working in nursing homes. That's where I discovered my passion for hospice care. I saw firsthand the comfort and support that patients and their families needed during such a difficult time. Whether I was in the nursing program or pursuing my music degree, I knew I wanted to focus on hospice care and make a meaningful difference in people's lives.
I want to continue my education and work toward my goals. I am going to stay at JCC and pursue an associate's degree in music. After completing my studies there, I hope to transfer to a four-year school to get my bachelor's and then my master's degree. By continuing my education, I can ensure that I'm prepared to become a music therapist who specializes in hospice care. This would allow me to provide the best possible support and comfort to those in need.
In my role as music therapist, I plan to develop programs that incorporate music into hospice care within our community. I am committed to working with health professionals to create therapeutic sessions that meet the individual needs of patients, such as playing soothing melodies, assisting patients in expressing themselves through song, and fostering a sense of compassion. I believe this work will have a positive impact on the lives of patients, enhancing quality of life and fostering a sense of connection and comfort during the most vulnerable times. My education has prepared me to use music as a healing medium that will enrich the lives of those I serve.

As president of our junior firefighter unit, I gained experience in leadership and organization, enabling me to effectively manage all aspects of our operations. Our division is responsible for providing essential support to the community, including public safety. In the absence of the captain, my responsibilities included all unit operations and oversight of social media. To that end, I established and maintain the division's Instagram page. My abilities in this role prove my ability to keep an organization on track, regardless of the task.
How can an organization grow? By fostering teamwork and mutual respect among its members. During my tenure as a Junior Firefighter, I learned that lesson firsthand. One of my key responsibilities was coordinating the annual car show, an event that is not only part of the organization’s public relations strategy but also a fundraiser. I was put in charge of assigning tasks and stations to all the other Junior firefighters, making sure that everyone had an active role to play. Through these efforts, I was able to create a stronger bond between the Junior firefighters and the adult firefighters, fostering teamwork and mutual respect.
As a Junior firefighter and president of the youth division, I was able to give back to the community in several meaningful ways. By organizing and participating in fundraising events like our car show, we raised essential funds that supported our firefighting operations and community outreach programs. Additionally, I maintained a robust social media presence to keep the community informed and involved, strengthening our relationships. Our efforts helped strengthen the bond between the fire department and the community, ensuring that we are always ready to assist when needed.
One of the most rewarding aspects of my leadership role was creating an environment where the Junior firefighters felt safe and supported. By fostering open communication and showing genuine concern for their well-being, I was able to build trust with my peers. This trust allowed a couple of the Junior firefighters to feel comfortable enough to talk to me about their home situations when they couldn't participate in events. By listening and offering support, I helped them navigate their challenges and ensured they still felt valued and included in our team. This experience underscored the importance of empathy and understanding in leadership, as it strengthened our bond and made our group more resilient.
Leadership through service is crucial because it not only builds essential skills like responsibility, teamwork, and problem-solving, but it also sets a positive example for others to follow. I believe that a leader should serve others while demonstrating the importance of community and teamwork. By taking on leadership roles within the Junior firefighter division, I was able to inspire my peers to take initiative and work together towards common goals. This kind of leadership fosters a sense of community and purpose, encouraging everyone to contribute their best efforts. It also bridges the gap between different generations within the fire department, creating a cohesive and supportive environment. Ultimately, leading through service helps to build a stronger, more resilient community that can effectively respond to challenges and support one another.

Losing my best friend to stage 4 esophageal cancer was like having the rug pulled out from under me. It happened about a year ago, and honestly, it still feels like yesterday. I didn't know how to cope, so I did what I thought was best at the time: I pushed everyone away. My parents, who live in South Carolina while I'm up here in New York, tried to help, but I wouldn't let them. I didn't want them to see me hurting, to see me that vulnerable. It was selfish of me, and I regret it now. Maybe there would have been less pain if I had asked for help.
It’s funny, isn’t it? You think you’re protecting them by shutting them out, but really, you’re just isolating yourself even more. I didn’t want their sympathy, their pity, or whatever it was they were offering. I just wanted to be left alone to deal with it in my own way. But the truth is, dealing with it alone was the worst thing I could have done.
There was this time, not too long ago, when the weight of everything just became too much to bear. The grief, the loneliness, the feeling of being utterly lost – it all piled up until I honestly didn't see any way out. I started thinking that maybe, just maybe, the world would be better off without me. It's a dark place to be, and I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy. I won't get into the nitty-gritty details, but let's just say I came pretty close to ending it all. It was like standing on the edge of a cliff, staring into the abyss, and thinking that jumping was the only way to find peace. But somehow, someway, I managed to pull myself back from the brink. It wasn't easy, not by a long shot, but I'm here now, telling you this story, and that's what matters.
Eventually, I realized I couldn't keep going like that. I had to let my family in, and thank goodness I did. My family was incredible. They supported me, listened to me, and helped me start to heal. They even pushed me to continue pursuing my dream of becoming a music therapist. Without them, I don't know where I'd be. It's like they say, family is everything, and sometimes, you just need to lean on them, even when you think you don't.
Working as a music therapist, I'll work with people who are struggling with all kinds of problems, including physical, emotional, and mental ones. While that can be challenging, my background in dealing with loss and grief means I have a unique ability to see things from a different perspective. Through my own experiences, I was able to understand how things are viewed by those experiencing this as well as see the value in music as a lifeline, a way to express what words cannot.

These musical experiences have solidified my belief in the healing power of music. My personal journey with mental health has inspired me to help others find the same comfort and strength in music that I have found.
Throughout my journey, I've made it a priority to give back to my community in meaningful ways. Volunteering as a firefighter has allowed me to serve my neighbors directly, providing support during emergencies and fostering a sense of safety and camaraderie. I’ve also dedicated my time to local shelters, helping organize events and fundraisers to raise awareness and resources for those in need. These experiences have not only enriched my life but have also deepened my understanding of the importance of compassion and community spirit. Giving back has become a vital part of who I am, and I strive to inspire others to do the same, creating a ripple effect of kindness and support in our community.
In addition to my musical pursuits, my volunteer work as a firefighter and my involvement in three plays at Jamestown Community College, with a fourth currently in progress, have significantly shaped my aspirations. These experiences have taught me the importance of empathy, teamwork, and resilience. They reinforced my commitment to using music therapy to support individuals facing mental health challenges, particularly in hospice and geriatric care.
Through my career as a music therapist, I hope to provide comfort, healing, and a sense of connection to those in need, just as music has done for me. I believe that by sharing my journey and the power of music, I can help others navigate their challenges and find peace in their own lives.

My name is Summer Jones, and I am a 19-year-old college student at Jamestown Community College (JCC), where I proudly maintain a GPA of 3.04. My journey has been shaped by the profound impact of mental illness within my family, particularly through my birthmother's struggles. She suffered from mental illness, leading to Munchausen syndrome by proxy, which affected both my little sister and me. The emotional and physical abuse I endured during my childhood has left deep scars, resulting in severe PTSD, anxiety, and depression.
These struggles have been so overwhelming at times that I found myself at a crossroads, almost taking my life on four separate occasions. Each time, I grappled with despair and hopelessness, but somehow, I managed to find a glimmer of hope that pulled me back from the edge. It’s a testament to my resilience and the strength that I continue to build through my experiences.
Over time, I gained a profound relationship with God, which has played a crucial role in my healing journey. This past Christmas, I made the heartfelt decision to let Jesus into my heart. This moment marked a significant turning point in my life, filling me with a sense of peace and purpose that I had long been searching for.
In addition to my personal journey, I also dedicated part of my life to serving my community as a volunteer firefighter from the ages of 16 to 18. I had the honor of being the president of the Junior Firefighters program, where I learned the importance of teamwork, leadership, and giving back. This experience not only strengthened my resolve but also deepened my commitment to helping others in times of need.
Despite these challenges, I have managed to cultivate my passions and aspire to achieve my goals. Music has always been a source of solace for me. I play multiple instruments, including the violin, guitar, piano, and ukulele, and I love to sing. Through music, I find a way to express my emotions and connect with others, which has become a vital part of my healing process.
I have a strong desire to become a music therapist, specializing in using my voice to help others navigate their own struggles. I believe in the transformative power of music and its ability to heal. My experiences have fueled my determination to make a difference in the lives of those who face similar challenges.
Despite the shadows of my past, I continue to move forward with hope and ambition. My journey may be marked by hardship, but it is also filled with resilience, faith, and the desire to create a positive impact through music therapy.

The pain of watching someone I cared about deeply suffer and eventually succumb to the illness was unbearable. It felt like a part of me was ripped away, leaving a void that seemed impossible to fill. This devastating loss sent me spiraling back into a deep hole of depression. The weight of grief and the memories of our time together became overwhelming, making it difficult to find joy or purpose in anything. It was a stark reminder of the fragility of life and the relentless grip that depression can have, especially in the face of such profound loss.
Music has always been a beacon of hope for me. As a child, I participated in music therapy, which became a vital part of my healing process. Playing the violin, piano, and ukulele, and now actively taking voice and guitar lessons, provided me with an emotional outlet and a sense of stability. Music therapy helped me navigate through my darkest times, offering solace and a way to express my emotions when words failed me.
These personal experiences have inspired me to become a music therapist. I aspire to help others find the same comfort and healing in music that I did. My goal is to support individuals facing mental health challenges, particularly in hospice and geriatric care, where the need for compassionate and effective therapy is paramount. I want to use my skills and experiences to make a positive impact on others, helping them find hope and resilience through music.
In addition to my musical journey, my volunteer work as a firefighter has taught me the importance of empathy, teamwork, and perseverance. My involvement in three plays at Jamestown Community College, with a fourth currently in progress, has provided me with a sense of community and purpose. These activities have reinforced my commitment to using my talents to help others and make a difference in their lives.
Despite the challenges posed by my depression and PTSD, I have continued to thrive. I have learned to manage my symptoms and use my experiences to fuel my passion and drive. My mental health struggles have not defined me; rather, they have motivated me to pursue a career where I can help others heal and find hope through music.
In conclusion, my experiences with mental health have deeply influenced my beliefs, relationships, and career aspirations. They have instilled in me a profound appreciation for the healing power of music and a determination to support others on their mental health journeys. I am committed to becoming a music therapist and using my skills to bring comfort and healing to those in need.

Since my earliest days, the melodies and harmonies of music have been a sanctuary, a place of solace and expression. Growing up, I didn't have many friends to share my thoughts and feelings with, so I found companionship in the notes and rhythms that filled my room. This personal journey with music intertwined deeply with my understanding of mental health, shaping my aspiration to become a music therapist.
My understanding of mental health began to take shape during my teenage years when I witnessed firsthand the struggles of loved ones including myself, battling anxiety and depression. These experiences opened my eyes to the profound impact that mental health has on every aspect of life. I saw how the stigma surrounding mental health issues often prevented people from seeking the help they needed, or often getting ignored; leading to a cycle of suffering and silence. This realization ignited a passion within me to break down these barriers and provide support to those in need.
Music, with its universal language, became my tool for connection and healing. I observed wile learning how to play the voilin in Kindergarten, how a simple melody could soothe an anxious mind, how a rhythmic beat could ground someone in the present moment, and how sharing a song could create a sense of community and belonging. These observations solidified my belief in the therapeutic power of music and inspired me to pursue a career as a music therapist. From then on out, i have continualsy been in choirs, musicals, plays, and learned instruments such as the piano, and the ukulele, and while in college; the guitar.
As a music therapist, I aim to combine my love for music with my dedication to mental health advocacy. I want to create safe spaces where individuals can explore their emotions, express themselves, and find healing through music. My goal is to use music therapy to bridge the gap between mental health care and the arts, providing holistic support to those who need it most. This scholarship will enable me to gain the education and training necessary to turn this vision into reality, and I am committed to using my skills to make a positive impact on the lives of others.
In conclusion, my understanding of mental health has profoundly shaped my interest in becoming a music therapist. It has fueled my passion for using music as a therapeutic tool and has driven me to advocate for mental health awareness and support. With the help of this scholarship, I am eager to embark on this journey and make a meaningful difference in the world of mental health care.

Travel can be transformative experiences for individuals for many different reasons I know in my personal life. I never had a father figure growing up, and I finally met him after almost 15 years. I was able to travel to see him when he lived in South Carolina, and I live in New York. It was a really good way for me to experience how to travel by myself and also meet family I had never met. Exposure to different cultures can be such an eye-opening experience for other people.
I know that if you want to go into a job career that requires you to understand other ethnic and cultural and even spiritual beliefs, you need to have an open eye for everything. When I studied sociology, it was one of the most eye-opening things I could ever study. As a future nurse, I feel like it is a good thing that it is required for everybody to take.
As a nurse, you need to put aside your personal beliefs and open up to the fact that other people believe in other things and do other things that might not be normal. Even just in the United States, there are countries that do other things to just keep going, and we cannot be judgmental to that. If I had the money, I definitely would want to travel to understand how different countries work. It would not just be beneficial for my understanding; it would help me be a better person and a better nurse. In my opinion, you need to know how to help other people besides just your beliefs. This is a crucial part of being part of the change.
I am a rising sophomore at Jamestown Community College, majoring in Nursing. I have a GPA of 3.00 and have always been committed to my studies. I have been a volunteer firefighter from the age of 16 to 17. I was in a musical at my high school and did two plays here at JCC. I became a CNA at the age of 17 by going to Boces when I was in high school. I won a perfect attendance award at Boces and got a career and technical endorsement stamp on my diploma.
These experiences have taught me the importance of dedication and understanding. Travel can offer even more opportunities for growth and development. It can help me become a more compassionate and knowledgeable nurse, ready to care for people from all walks of life. I hope to use the Combined Worlds Scholarship to further my education and broaden my horizons through travel.

Growing up in a single-parent household has impacted me in more ways than I can count. My birth mother had to work, and there was no one else to watch me and my younger sister, so my older sisters ended up giving up a huge chunk of their lives to take care of us. This included making dinner, doing all the chores, and making sure we had our homework done. We were pretty much raised by our older sisters and ourselves since our mother was rarely around.
My mother also wanted to have a boyfriend, and because we grew up without a father figure, there were often men staying around the house. This created unsafe situations, which made us stronger than we needed to be because we always ended up protecting our younger siblings. I do not talk to my mother much today because we had a very unhealthy relationship growing up. I needed a mother and a father, but I did not have either. Yes, she may have stuck around, but she was always with other men or at her job, leaving us to fend for ourselves.
We did not have much food growing up, let alone toys or anything fun. We were very lucky when one of our moms boyfriends got us bikes so we could go around and play with other kids our age. By the time we were 10 years old, we all ended up getting our babysitting licenses and babysitting for kids around the trailer park we grew up in, but we never got any of that money. We were all forced to have jobs at a young age to help support our family.
Despite these challenges, I have always wanted to help people. This is why I am studying nursing at Jamestown Community College. I want to become a nurse because I want to help people in all aspects of life, whether it is spiritual, emotional, physical, or social. I believe that my experiences growing up have given me the strength and determination to succeed in this field. This scholarship will be a crucial stepping stone in my life. I am 18 years old and at the risk of being homeless. I live in the dorms for the summer and pay tuition every month to stay here. I work very hard to make ends meet, but it is not easy. The scholarship will not only help me with my education but could also help me with my dorming to ensure I can stay and continue my studies.
I have always been driven to help others. I was a volunteer firefighter from the age of 16 to 17, participated in a musical at my high school, and did two plays at Jamestown Community College. I became a CNA at the age of 17 by going to BOCES when I was in high school. I also received a perfect attendance award at BOCES and got a career and technical endorsement stamp on my diploma. Receiving the Dimon A. Williams Memorial Scholarship will allow me to focus more on my studies and less on financial stress. It will help me achieve my goal of becoming a nurse, a profession where I can continue to help and care for others, just as I have always wanted to do.

Growing up as a bisexual individual in a very religious household was incredibly challenging. I came out to my mom when I was about 10 or 11 years old. My birth mother is a devout Christian, and her reaction was harsh. She grounded me for about a year and sent me to a Christian Bible camp, hoping that the preacher could "pray away the gay." This experience not only strained our already fragile relationship but also made me lose faith in God and my religion. To this day, I do not talk to her, and our relationship has never recovered.
Despite these hardships, I have found strength and purpose in my experiences. I am currently a rising sophomore at Jamestown Community College, majoring in Nursing with a GPA of 3.00. I became a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) at the age of 17 through a program at Boces, where I earned a perfect attendance award and a career and technical endorsement stamp on my diploma. Working as a CNA in various nursing homes has been eye-opening. I have realized that many elderly individuals have spent their entire lives in the closet, growing up in a time when being LGBTQ+ was far from accepted. After talking to some of them, I learned that they now feel it is okay to come out, but only on their own terms.
This has inspired me to specialize in geriatrics as a nurse. I want to help people in all aspects of their lives, including their mental, emotional, and physical health. I believe that my personal experiences will allow me to connect with and support my patients in ways that others might not be able to. My aspirations for higher education go beyond just earning a degree. I want to use my education to advocate for LGBTQ+ rights and make a positive impact on society. I believe that understanding and empathy are crucial in the healthcare field, and I am committed to providing a safe and supportive environment for all my patients, regardless of their background or identity.
Receiving the Rainbow Futures Scholarship would significantly alleviate the financial burdens of my education. It would allow me to focus more on my studies and less on the financial strain that comes with pursuing higher education. This scholarship would enable me to continue my journey towards becoming a nurse and advocate for LGBTQ+ rights. It would also give me the opportunity to volunteer more and engage in activities that support the LGBTQ+ community, furthering my commitment to making a difference. In conclusion, my personal experiences as a bisexual individual have shaped who I am today and have fueled my passion for nursing and advocacy. The Rainbow Futures Scholarship would not only help me achieve my educational goals but also empower me to make a positive impact on the lives of others. Thank you for considering my application.

I believe that by focusing on the holistic well-being of individuals, I can help improve not just their physical health, but also their mental and emotional states. Participating in high school musicals and plays at JCC has also given me a unique perspective on the importance of emotional and spiritual health. I plan to integrate this understanding into my nursing practice by promoting activities that support emotional and spiritual well-being. Whether it is through music, art, or simply providing a listening ear, I want to help my patients find balance and peace in their lives. Winning the perfect attendance award at Boces and receiving a career and technical endorsement stamp on my diploma are testaments to my dedication and commitment to my education.
