I am a second-year student at The University of Texas School of Law, and I am pursuing a career in civil rights and human rights law. As a third-generation South Asian immigrant and Muslim American, I have a deep personal understanding of the various intersectional struggles of marginalized populations. As the threats facing vulnerable communities escalate domestically and abroad, I aspire to become a lawyer focused on defending civil and human rights through litigation and advocacy. Before law school, I worked in state and local government and gained experience with advocacy tactics aimed at centering the interests of marginalized communities in the legislative process. After this, I worked at the Texas Civil Rights Project where I crafted materials featuring advocacy and litigation tackling a wide range of civil rights issues such as the criminalization of poverty and inhumane immigration practices. I also headed digital media for a student-led campaign to free wrongfully imprisoned Muslim civil and human rights leader, Imam Jamil Al-Amin (formerly H. Rap Brown). These experiences inspired me to pursue law school to contribute further to movements against injustice and oppression as an attorney. I am confident that the skills I have acquired, along with my commitment to civil and human rights, will enable me to effectively contribute to advocating for vulnerable populations.
