Bio

I am Sukriti Rai, a first-generation Nepali immigrant belonging to an indigenous group in Nepal. I come from a country with limited healthcare resources and an unstable political alliance. Growing up, I recognized many gaps in healthcare due to economic, social, and cultural factors that I disagreed with and wished would change, but I personally lacked the skills and credentials to address them. I am passionate not only about providing impactful patient education in my future clinical practice but also about unlearning and relearning the lessons of cultural humility and cultural competence to deliver patient-centered care for patients from diverse backgrounds. I am grateful for having experienced personal and professional growth through the purity of working with geriatric dialysis patients. I plan to use my medical knowledge to serve special patient populations, including immigrants, the geriatric population, and underserved communities. My dream job as a PA practicing medicine would be a series of heartfelt moments with my patients, rather than a career destination.

My first-hand experience of the power of education to bridge gaps in healthcare literacy motivated me to become an impactful PA who is also a thoughtful patient educator. While struggling to balance traditional beliefs with textbook science in my grandparents’ village in Nepal, where shamans played a significant role in health care, I often wondered what an effective provider could have done to positively influence their medical decision-making. I believe an impactful PA is someone who guides, equips, and empowers their patients to make informed decisions, with the underlying purpose of improving their health. My role will be to support and educate these patients, explaining diagnoses, tests, and treatments, setting goals for their safety and peace of mind by helping them take charge of their health. My commitment to patient-centered care will continue to be fueled by the reason I chose the PA path as a vocation rather than just a profession: a hunger for human connection and a desire to leave a positive impact on patients in their most vulnerable times. I believe an impactful PA is somebody who is coachable by their team. The didactic year taught me the importance of unlearning unproductive study habits and relearning skills for effective learning with the guidance of my professors. I strive to become a lifelong learner/PA who is open to change, welcomes self-improvement, remains curious, and practices up-to-date, evidence-based medicine. I am confident I can master my clinical autonomy by continuing to enjoy the learning process. I continue to work toward improving my competency in patient care by utilizing constructive feedback from my supervisors and teammates, because being an impactful PA is an ongoing learning process. An impactful PA centers humanity and not just medicine. Amid multiple patient encounters, it is essential for a PA to pause and reflect on the lessons their patients teach them about empathy, values, and lived experiences. My patient care experiences have instilled in me compassion and introspection, allowing me to recognize gaps in the care I was providing. I consistently aim to intentionally ask, listen, and understand what matters most to each of my patients, and tailor treatment plans that protect their health and dignity. The PA curriculum has taught me that serving patients is not meant to be passive; it is an active, intentional, and effortful endeavor that I will continue in my clinical practice on a daily basis and through part-time volunteering in my community. An impactful PA is enthusiastic about becoming a patient advocate. My goal coming into PA school was to foster representation in healthcare, fueled by previously mentoring an immigrant pursuing nursing and seeing the power of advocacy in expanding opportunities. I now long to bridge gaps and overcome patient barriers to health equity as a PA. Advocacy in the everyday life of a PA can take small steps, such as speaking up when care is unfair or unsafe, navigating cultural barriers, providing timely resources, and creating a treatment plan that aligns with their rights and lived realities. I am passionate about using my clinical role as a platform to help patients navigate systems that were not designed with them in mind.
