If I had to pick one moment from my life that had an impact on the person I became as I write this essay, it would have to be the time I broke my right wrist during my freshman year of High School. To give context to this event, it was one of the first games for my select soccer team. I was playing midfield and got tackled by someone much larger than me in height and mass. When that force met a much smaller one, I uncontrollably fell back and snapped the bone in my right wrist. Fast forwarding a few days I’m at school with pins in my wrist and a cast to cover it all up. Daily tasks like putting on a shirt and eating my own food became challenges, and being right handed didn’t help either as I had trouble doing school work. This presented myself with an inconvenience that looking back on now, was a problem that I would never wish on someone else. Personally, I learned that I wanted nothing more than to overcome this weakness of having a broken wrist. Now seeing this from a different perspective, I am truly thankful for the doctors and everyone who made it possible for me to know what the issue was and how to solve it. Previously, wanting to go into some sort of computer science to follow in my father’s footsteps, I felt stagnant. Specifically, I never thought I could be different as I was always compared to my father in education and thought. Deep down I eventually realized that I wanted something different. Whether it was to prove a point to my family or myself, my drive to not have people deal with issues I’ve experienced has shaped me into the person I am now. This drive is why I am applying to this scholarship because I want to pursue an education in biomedical engineering as I would be able to help those like people me. Those unfortunate enough to have issues like mine or much worse are the same people I want to see overcome and be stronger from it. As I still have the scars from the time I broke my wrist, each time I see them it reminds me of my goal. This goal of mine is not one of grandeur or money, but rather one out of satisfaction. I want to see people happy and healthy and to achieve that, I am wanting to use the aid from this scholarship to pursue a further education in a STEM degree such as biomedical engineering.
