To meet the 400-600 word requirement, I can expand on a few points and add more depth to the essay without changing its core message. Here's a revised version: The underrepresentation of Black professionals in business has been a longstanding issue, contributing to a lack of diversity in decision-making roles and limiting the potential for innovative and inclusive leadership. As I pursue my degree in Business Management with a specialization in Human Resources at South Carolina State University (SCSU), I am committed to using my education to address this gap. My goal is to create opportunities for Black people to enter and thrive in the business world, where their voices and perspectives can shape a more equitable and dynamic future. At SCSU, a historically Black institution, I have been given the tools to make this possible, building a strong foundation in leadership, ethics, and inclusivity. The business world has long struggled with racial disparities in leadership, and this has had a profound impact on diversity within organizations. My primary focus as a future Human Resources leader will be on fostering environments where diversity and inclusion are prioritized. By advocating for and implementing comprehensive diversity initiatives, I can ensure that Black professionals not only have opportunities to enter the workforce but are also supported in advancing to leadership roles. This will involve developing robust mentorship programs, establishing diverse talent pipelines, and addressing systemic biases in hiring and promotions. The goal is to create workplaces where Black professionals feel valued, heard, and empowered to contribute to organizational success. Moreover, diversity is not just a moral imperative; it is also a strategic advantage. Research has consistently shown that diverse teams are more innovative, adaptable, and able to meet the challenges of an increasingly interconnected world. By ensuring that Black professionals have a seat at the table in decision-making processes, organizations will benefit from a wide range of perspectives, leading to more creative solutions and sustainable growth. My education at SCSU has taught me that inclusivity is not just about representation—it is about creating systems where everyone can thrive. This understanding will guide my approach as I work to help organizations build stronger, more diverse teams. Mentorship is another key area where I plan to make an impact. Throughout my own academic journey, I have been fortunate to receive guidance from mentors who encouraged me to pursue my goals and helped me navigate the challenges of being a Black student in business. I believe that mentorship can be a powerful tool for inspiring the next generation of Black business leaders, and I intend to pay it forward. By working with educational institutions, professional networks, and corporate diversity programs, I will mentor young Black students and professionals, providing them with the support they need to succeed. I want to show them that, despite the underrepresentation they may see, there is a place for them in the business world, and their contributions are vital. Ultimately, my education at SCSU has equipped me with the skills, knowledge, and determination to make a lasting impact in the business field. I am passionate about creating inclusive, diverse workplaces that foster equity and respect. As I move forward in my career, I am committed to advocating for Black professionals and helping build systems that support their success. By paving the way for greater representation in leadership and decision-making, I hope to contribute to a more equitable and diverse business landscape. Just as SCSU has empowered me, I am determined to empower others and help shape the next generation of Black business leaders.

Education has been more than just a means to success for me; it has been a transformative journey that has shaped my sense of purpose. Like Augustus L. Harper, I believe in education's power to break barriers and foster equity. Harper’s story of using education to escape poverty and help others access learning resonates deeply with me. My experiences at South Carolina State University (SCSU), a historically Black institution, have reinforced this belief and prepared me to advocate for fairness, inclusivity, and social justice in my professional life. Choosing to study Business Management with a specialization in Human Resources at SCSU was a deliberate step toward finding a space where I could contribute to positive change. Before enrolling at SCSU, I witnessed corporate environments that prioritized profits over people, which inspired me to seek out a career where I could be an advocate for those often marginalized. SCSU, with its legacy of nurturing diversity, provided the perfect environment for that transformation. Here, I found an academic setting that not only values diverse voices but encourages us to use education as a tool for social change. My time at SCSU has taught me that education is much more than mastering textbooks—it is about developing the skills and values needed to effect meaningful change. Through interactions with insightful professors and peers who share a commitment to social justice, I have come to understand the importance of ethical leadership and inclusivity in any organization. The ability to foster diverse, inclusive environments is not just an ethical responsibility; it is also a strategic advantage that leads to innovation and sustainable growth. This mindset has become central to my educational and professional aspirations. In addition to the focus on diversity, SCSU’s legacy of resilience has profoundly shaped my experience. The university has faced many challenges throughout its history but has always remained a symbol of determination and perseverance. This resilience has inspired me to confront obstacles with the same resolve, understanding that adversity can be overcome through hard work and faith in the purpose of education. As I prepare to enter the professional world, this lesson will stay with me, driving me to be a leader who advocates for fairness and ethical conduct in every role I take on. Reflecting on the teachings of Augustus L. Harper, I see education as a vital force that not only elevates individuals but empowers them to lift others. At SCSU, I have gained both the knowledge and the conviction to carry this forward into my career. I plan to use my degree in Business Management and Human Resources to foster inclusive workplaces that value diversity and respect, knowing that true success is not achieved alone but through collective progress. Ultimately, education has given me the tools to navigate life’s challenges with resilience and purpose. Just as Harper believed in education as a vehicle for change, I, too, see it as a way to create lasting, positive impact. My time at SCSU has been a vital part of this journey, equipping me with the skills, perspective, and determination to advocate for fairness and justice in the world around me.

Navigating the Tapestry: Weaving Purpose at South Carolina State University Diversity has been a vibrant thread throughout my educational journey, sparking a desire for change amidst contrasting landscapes. Witnessing corporate prioritization of profit over people prompted my return to academia, driven by a quest to advocate for fairness and justice. Initially exploring education elsewhere in South Carolina, I yearned for a transformative environment that celebrates diversity and fosters positive change. South Carolina State University (SCSU) emerged as the beacon I sought, proudly embracing its legacy as a historically Black institution. Selecting Human Resources as my focus wanted to find my calling within this environment, resonating deeply with its capacity to champion inclusivity within organizational structures. At SCSU, I have been enriched by insightful professors who navigate the delicate balance of leadership, ethics, and organizational behavior. Engaging with peers equally committed to social justice reinforced the understanding that education extends far beyond the confines of textbooks—it is a tool for fostering societal equity and driving meaningful change. Beyond its role as an educational institution, SCSU stands as a testament to resilience, community, and the transformative power of education. Pursuing my Business Management degree with a specialization in Human Resources, I embrace the responsibility to advocate for fairness and amplify marginalized voices both within and beyond campus borders. Within the halls of SCSU, I have discovered my purpose—a melody resonating far beyond classroom walls. Together with my peers, we compose a symphony of inclusivity, respect, and ethical conduct, actively shaping the future we envision. Expanding on the theme of diversity, SCSU's commitment to embracing varied identities prepares students for success in an increasingly interconnected world. Diversity, encompassing not just racial differences but also factors such as gender and socioeconomic status, enriches the educational experience and fosters a vibrant campus community. Moreover, diversity is not just a moral imperative; it is also a strategic advantage in the business world. Research consistently demonstrates that diverse teams are more innovative and adaptable, contributing to sustainable growth and competitive advantage. As a future leader in Human Resources, I recognize the importance of championing diversity initiatives as both ethically imperative and strategically advantageous. Resilience is another hallmark of the SCSU experience. Despite facing numerous challenges throughout its history, the institution and its community have persevered, embodying a spirit of determination in the face of adversity. This legacy of resilience serves as a source of inspiration, motivating me to overcome challenges and make a meaningful impact. Also desired to be somewhere that I did not have to concern myself, on a routine basis with racial insults hurled at me as in the past at the first University I attended. In conclusion, my journey at South Carolina State University has been transformative, shaping my understanding of diversity, resilience, and purpose. From the vibrant tapestry of voices on campus to the lessons learned in the classroom, SCSU has equipped me with the tools and inspiration to weave change in the world around me. As I embark on the next phase of my journey, I carry with me the optimism and determination instilled by my experiences at SCSU, confident in my ability to make a meaningful difference in the world. Title: The Transformative Power of Service: Shaping a Better World Through Business Management In a world often marked by self-interest and individual pursuits, I stand resolute in my unwavering commitment to service and giving back to my community. Over two decades of professional experience, combined with my ongoing pursuit of a business management degree, have crystallized one essential truth: service is not just a noble pursuit; it is a fundamental aspect of our shared humanity that should guide every facet of our lives. My journey toward this realization began in the U.S. Air Force, where I climbed the ranks from an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) to the esteemed position of Medical Operations Squadron Superintendent. This journey not only honed my leadership skills but also deeply influenced my understanding of service. I witnessed firsthand the profound impact a single act of kindness could have on a community. One remarkable transformation unfolded during my time at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base in North Carolina when I volunteered for Big Brother/Big Sister of Goldsboro. As a mentor to a young boy named Jim, I initially questioned the need for a mentor in his life. However, I soon discovered that Jim's circumstances, marked by limited resources and a single working mother, left him starved for attention and support. My role as a mentor not only positively influenced Jim's life but also taught me a pivotal lesson: never judge a book by its cover. This experience underscored the importance of compassion, empathy, and love. Leaving the Air Force, I transitioned from the military into sales, where I found success but also a longing to return to truly helping others. My return to the healthcare field as a Certified Medical Assistant placed me on the front lines of patient care. Here, I offered compassion and support throughout patients' healthcare journeys, realizing that service was more than a task; it was a means to alleviate suffering, promote healing, and provide solace to those in need. Each venipuncture I skillfully performed and every specimen I meticulously prepared carried the potential to make a profound positive impact on someone's life. My role as a Laboratory Specimen Processing Manager at Vikor Scientific deepened my understanding of service and leadership. Not only did I manage the complex process of laboratory specimens, but I also took on the role of mentor and guide to laboratory technicians and staff. It was during this period that I discovered the profound impact of leadership through service. Empowering my team and nurturing their growth highlighted how service could be a catalyst for personal and professional development, fostering a thriving work environment. These collective experiences have not only shaped my perspective on humanity but have also profoundly influenced my career choices. I came to realize that management is not solely about achieving organizational goals; it is about creating a workplace culture where service to both customers and employees is a top priority. This realization propelled me towards pursuing a degree in business management. I recognized that effective management transcends profit margins and strategic planning; it is about cultivating a culture of service within an organization. I aimed to leverage my diverse experiences and knowledge to lead and manage teams in a way that prioritized the well-being of both employees and customers. I aspired to create workplaces where service was not merely a department, but a core value ingrained in the company's DNA. As I continue my education in business management, my future goals remain closely aligned with my unyielding commitment to service. I aspire to utilize my skills and expertise to make a meaningful contribution to my community by establishing a Community Center. This center will serve as a sanctuary where individuals of all ages and backgrounds can access educational programs, health resources, and community outreach initiatives. It will stand as a testament to the belief that service is not just a personal endeavor but a collective responsibility to uplift and empower our community. In conclusion, my life's journey—from the U.S. Air Force to healthcare management and now to business management—has been marked by a profound commitment to giving back and serving. These experiences have reaffirmed my belief in the transformative power of service and its ability to shape our perspective on humanity. They have guided my career choices, leading me to pursue business management to embed service at the core of organizations. My future goals revolve around creating a Community Center that serves as a beacon of service and support for my community. Service is not just a part of who I am; it is the driving force that will shape my career and future endeavors, making a positive and lasting impact on the world around me. By embracing service as a cornerstone of our existence, we can collectively shape a better world, one act of kindness at a time.

It has truly been the cornerstone of my personal growth, professional development, and my ability to contribute to societal progress. My journey through life has been a testament to the transformative power of education. It has not only enriched my life but also paved the way for my success in various endeavors. During my time as a highly accomplished senior non-commissioned officer in the United States Air Force, I earned notable recognition and accolades for my unwavering dedication and service. However, the transition into the civilian workforce after my retirement presented me with unforeseen challenges. The structured and disciplined military environment was worlds apart from the civilian world, which often appeared resistant to change and exhibited suboptimal management practices. Faced with this unfamiliar and challenging environment, I recognized the imperative need to adapt and excel. To achieve this, I decided to return to the classroom—a decision that reinforced my belief in the paramount importance of education. I would argue that continuous learning is now more critical than ever in our rapidly changing world. Education equips us with invaluable knowledge, skills, and critical thinking abilities that enable us to thrive in diverse settings. It empowers us to tackle complex challenges, seize opportunities, and make meaningful contributions to our communities and workplaces. I firmly believe that education is not a one-time event but an ongoing and lifelong commitment to self-improvement. It is an investment that pays dividends in the form of personal fulfillment, career advancement, and societal progress. The book, Raisin in the Sun by Lorraine Hansberry has taught me a great deal about the challenges that people of color face in America. The story of the Younger family, who are striving to achieve the American dream, is a powerful reminder of the systemic racism that continues to exist in our society. One of the things that I learned from the book is that racism can take many different forms. It can be overt, such as when the Youngers are denied a loan because of their race. But it can also be more subtle, such as when they are treated with suspicion by the police or excluded from social circles. As depicted by the "Karen" calling the police has become known as "walking; running; or even cleaning your neighbors' yard, all "while Black" leading to unnecessary encounters with the police which normally does not end well for people of color. Another thing that I learned from the book is that racism can have a devastating impact on people's lives. The Youngers are constantly faced with obstacles because of their race. They are denied opportunities, they are treated with disrespect, and they are made to feel like they do not belong. But despite the challenges they face, the Youngers never give up hope. They are determined to achieve their dreams and to create a better future for their family. As my mother demonstrated to me through her perseverance during life's challenges. This book has inspired me to work for racial justice. I believe that we can create a world where everyone is treated equally, regardless of their race. But it will take hard work and dedication. We must educate ourselves about racism, we must speak out against injustice, and we must support organizations that are working for racial justice. I am inspired by the countless people who are fighting for a more just world. Their courage and determination give me hope. I know that together, we can create a world where equality prevails for all. I share my experiences to connect with others and let them know that they are not alone. I want to let people know that they are not the only ones who are facing racism. And I want to tell them that people are fighting for change. I believe that we can create a better world, a world where everyone is treated equally, regardless of their race, religion, gender, or sexual orientation. A world where everyone can succeed. I am committed to working for that world, and I hope that you will join me. Sincerely, Steven P. Gethers
