WCEJ Thornton Foundation Tools of the Trade Scholarship
WinnerDear Thornton Foundation,
I am writing to sincerely express why receiving this scholarship would mean so much to me and my future. I grew up on the westside of Atlanta, where opportunities can sometimes feel limited and financial struggles are a part of everyday life for many families, including mine. Even with the challenges I have faced, I have stayed determined to create a better future for myself and my mother through education, hard work, and dedication.
This August, I will be attending Lincoln Tech to pursue a career in HVAC. Before starting school, I am also participating in a 20-day Construction Ready program where I will earn industry certifications and gain hands-on experience that will help prepare me for the workforce. I chose HVAC because I want a career that allows me to build long term stability, support my family, and eventually create opportunities for myself that I never had growing up.
For most of my life, it has mainly been just me and my mom trying to make things work. We do not have a strong support system or family members who are able to help financially. Watching my mother work hard while still struggling has motivated me to push myself harder and take my future seriously. I do not want her to continue carrying the stress of financial hardship on her own. My goal is to one day be able to support her the way she has always supported me.
Although I am excited about attending Lincoln Tech, I am also worried about the financial burden that comes with it. The cost of tuition, tools, transportation, and student loans weighs heavily on me every day. There are moments where I feel overwhelmed thinking about how I will afford everything while trying to stay focused on school and building a career. Still, I continue pushing forward because I know this opportunity could completely change my life.
Receiving this scholarship would help relieve some of that stress and allow me to focus more on my education and career goals instead of constantly worrying about finances. I am willing to work hard for every opportunity I receive, and I plan to use my education to build a successful future not only for myself, but for my mother as well.
Thank you for taking the time to read my story and consider my application. Your support would truly make a life-changing difference for me and my future.
