It’s important to me to help others who are struggling with addiction because I’ve witnessed the devastation it causes not only to individuals, but to their families, relationships, careers, and overall well-being. Addiction is a disease that doesn’t discriminate. It can affect anyone, regardless of background, education, or income level. Sadly, the stigma surrounding addiction often prevents people from reaching out for the help they need. Instead of receiving compassion and treatment, many face judgment, rejection, and isolation. This only worsens the cycle and leads to more suffering.
I believe everyone deserves dignity, respect, and the opportunity to heal. No one should be defined by their lowest moment. I feel a deep sense of purpose in being someone who sees beyond the addiction—someone who sees the person, their potential, and their pain. My desire to help those with substance use disorders comes from a place of empathy and advocacy. I want to be a part of breaking the stigma, changing the narrative, and creating space for people to recover and reclaim their lives.
In my career as a registered nurse—and as a future nurse practitioner—I will use my platform to provide not only evidence-based treatment, but also education, emotional support, and resources to individuals and families affected by addiction. I plan to incorporate addiction recovery services into my practice wherever possible, whether that means offering medication-assisted treatment (MAT), conducting screenings, facilitating mental health referrals, or simply listening without judgment. Being there for someone who truly needs someone to just care is a rewarding experience for both people.
I also see myself engaging in community outreach and health education initiatives aimed at prevention, early intervention, and family support. Through collaboration with behavioral health professionals, addiction specialists, and community organizations, I want to be a bridge between patients and the care they deserve. I believe nurses are uniquely positioned to advocate for those whose voices are often unheard and I intend to use that position with purpose.
Ultimately, my goal is to help patients understand that recovery is not only possible but sustainable. I want to help them believe in themselves again. If I can be even a small part of someone’s healing journey, then I will consider that a success. Thank you for consideration my application and taking the time to read my words. In a world where you can be anything be kind. Chase your dreams because your dreams won't chase you back. Thank you again. Stephanie Willis
