Bio

I understand when many will look at my profile, they might notice that I am older than your typical college student and honestly it has had me overlooked as a candidate for many scholarships. I am a single mother of four wonderful kids and although I had them earlier in life which did not allow me the opportunity to attend college sooner, I would not change it for the world. I want to be able to provide better for my children and give them the opportunities I did not have when I was their ages. I also want to show them that when you put your mind to it you can achieve any goal you have for yourself. I have always wanted to become a nurse, and I am finally almost finished with school, but I am struggling to find a way to continue to cover the cost with also needing to be the sole provider for my kids and I do not want to give up. I want to work in either pediatric nursing or labor and delivery nursing because I want to be able to provide a better care environment for those in my care. I enjoy taking care of children and I also enjoy helping those who are bringing babies into the world, it is a passion of mine to work in these fields and I am hoping that with the help of scholarships I can finally accomplish that goal.

One of the most significant moments when I relied on my faith to overcome a challenge was during my mother’s battle with acute myeloid leukemia (AML). At 16 years old, I was thrust into a world of uncertainty and fear, watching the strongest person in my life endure an overwhelming diagnosis. It was a time when I could have easily given in to despair, but instead, I leaned on my faith to find strength, hope, and resilience. When my mother was diagnosed, it felt as though the ground had been pulled out from under us. As a single mother, she had always been the bedrock of our family, working tirelessly to provide for me and my siblings. Her illness not only left her physically weakened but also placed an emotional and financial strain on our household. Suddenly, I found myself stepping into a caregiver role I wasn’t prepared for, managing responsibilities far beyond my years. In those moments of fear and uncertainty, my faith became my anchor. I turned to prayer daily, asking for guidance, strength, and healing for my mother. The act of praying brought me a sense of calm amid the chaos, reminding me that even in the darkest times, I was not alone. I clung to the belief that God had a plan, even if I couldn’t see it yet. This trust in something greater than myself allowed me to push forward when everything felt overwhelming. My faith also gave me the courage to lean on others. Members of our church community offered support, whether through meals, transportation, or simply being there to listen. Accepting help was humbling, but it reinforced my belief in the power of collective faith and compassion. Seeing how others lived out their faith by lifting us up in our time of need inspired me to do the same for others in the future. As I navigated this difficult period, my faith not only strengthened my resolve but also shaped my perspective on life. I learned to find gratitude in small victories—an encouraging test result, a good day for my mom, or the simple gift of having her with us another day. It was through this lens of gratitude that I found the determination to keep going, even when the path seemed impossible. This experience has had a lasting impact on my life and my goals. It reinforced my desire to pursue a career in nursing, where I can bring the same compassion and care to others that was shown to my family. It also taught me the importance of faith in action—helping others through their own storms, just as my faith community helped us. In moments of adversity, faith has been my source of strength, hope, and direction. It has shown me that even in the face of life’s greatest challenges, there is always a path forward. By trusting in God and embracing the support of others, I have been able to transform obstacles into opportunities for growth, gratitude, and purpose.

Kindness has always been a guiding principle in my life, shaping not only how I interact with others but also the path I have chosen as a nursing student and single mother. One instance of kindness that stands out is a recurring pattern of offering support to struggling mothers in my community. This ongoing effort has profoundly impacted not only the lives of others but also my own, reinforcing the importance of empathy and service in creating a more connected and compassionate world. As a single mother of four, I understand the challenges and isolation that can accompany raising children without a strong support system. Many of the mothers I’ve met face similar struggles, from financial difficulties to the emotional toll of balancing work, school, and family. Recognizing this, I began offering small acts of kindness to ease their burdens, whether it was providing a listening ear, babysitting their children for a few hours, or sharing resources like gently used baby clothes and school supplies. These gestures might seem small, but to the mothers on the receiving end, they have often meant a great deal. For example, one mother in my community was juggling two jobs while caring for a newborn. She had no family nearby and felt overwhelmed. I reached out and offered to watch her baby while she attended a job interview. When she got the job, she told me how much that single act of kindness had lifted her spirits and given her the confidence to keep pushing forward. Another example is an informal support group I started with a few other single mothers. We meet regularly to share our struggles, swap advice, and uplift one another. This group has grown into a small network of women who look out for each other, creating a ripple effect of kindness. By simply offering encouragement and solidarity, we’ve fostered a sense of belonging that has positively impacted everyone involved. Kindness is also a cornerstone of my career aspirations. As a nursing student, I’ve had the privilege of practicing compassion in clinical settings. I remember one elderly patient who was particularly nervous about an upcoming procedure. She didn’t have family with her and felt frightened. I sat with her for a few minutes, held her hand, and reassured her that she was in good hands. Her gratitude was immediate and heartfelt—she later told me that those moments of comfort helped her feel brave. These experiences have taught me that kindness isn’t just about grand gestures—it’s about being present, showing empathy, and taking action in ways that meet people where they are. The impact of these moments isn’t always visible, but their effects can be far-reaching. The mother I babysat for, for instance, has since paid that kindness forward by helping another mom in need. The elderly patient’s family later thanked me, sharing how much it meant to them to know she was cared for during such a stressful time. For me, kindness is a way of life. It reflects my belief in the power of connection and my responsibility to use my time and resources to help others. As I continue my education in nursing, kindness will remain at the heart of my practice. I want to work in pediatrics or labor and delivery, fields where empathy and understanding are especially crucial. My goal is not just to provide medical care but also to ensure that my patients and their families feel seen, heard, and supported. The pattern of kindness I’ve shown in my life has not only helped others but has also deeply enriched my own journey. It has taught me the value of community and the strength that comes from lifting others up. Whether through small acts of service or larger efforts like pursuing a career in nursing, kindness allows me to live with purpose and create positive change in the world around me. In conclusion, kindness is more than an action—it is a way of connecting with others and affirming their worth. The impact of kindness can be as small as a moment of relief or as profound as a life-changing opportunity. By continuing to show kindness in my daily life and future career, I hope to inspire others to do the same, creating a cycle of compassion that benefits us all.
      Expression in Medicine Scholarship
Free expression is essential in medicine because it empowers individuals to share ideas, advocate for change, and connect with others. As a nursing student and single mother, I’ve experienced the transformative power of open communication in both my personal and professional life. This belief in the importance of expression drives my passion for nursing and my commitment to fostering an environment where every voice is valued. In healthcare, free expression enables professionals to question practices, collaborate on solutions, and advocate for patients who may not have a voice. During my clinical rotations, I’ve seen how speaking up—whether to question a procedure or share an observation—can directly improve patient outcomes. These moments highlight the importance of creating a space where every team member feels empowered to contribute, regardless of their role or title. My personal journey has shown me how crucial free expression is for building trust and understanding. Living with anxiety, PTSD, and ADHD, I know how difficult it can be to open up and share struggles out of fear of judgment. Through counseling and vulnerability, I’ve learned that expressing myself is not a sign of weakness but a path to growth. These lessons have shaped my approach to nursing, where I hope to create safe spaces for patients to express their concerns and feel truly heard. Fostering free expression in medicine requires intentional effort. As future healthcare providers, we must encourage open dialogue and mutual respect among colleagues. This includes advocating for patients, especially those from marginalized communities, to ensure they feel empowered to voice their needs. One way I plan to champion free expression is by being an advocate for both patients and my colleagues. For patients, this means listening with empathy and respect, allowing them to actively participate in their care. For my team, it means fostering an atmosphere where ideas and concerns can be shared openly, leading to stronger collaboration and better outcomes. Education is another critical aspect of protecting free expression in healthcare. Training that emphasizes cultural competence, active listening, and critical thinking prepares providers to navigate complex situations with understanding and empathy. Additionally, technology, like AI writing tools or collaboration platforms, can amplify voices and enhance communication when used responsibly. Free expression in medicine isn’t just about sharing thoughts—it’s the foundation for trust, innovation, and compassionate care. For me, it is personal. It’s about using my voice to make a difference for my patients, my community, and my family. It’s about listening to others and ensuring that everyone feels safe, respected, and valued. By protecting and promoting this ideal, we honor the humanity that connects us all and drive the profession forward in service to others.
      Elevate Mental Health Awareness Scholarship
My journey with mental health has profoundly shaped who I am, influencing my beliefs, relationships, and career aspirations in ways I never could have anticipated. Living with anxiety, PTSD, depression, and ADHD has presented significant challenges, but it has also given me unique insights into the importance of compassion, resilience, and the transformative power of support. These experiences have not only shaped my personal life but have also fueled my desire to pursue a career in nursing—a field where I can make a meaningful difference in the lives of others. Beliefs My experiences with mental health have reshaped my core beliefs about strength and vulnerability. For much of my life, I felt that admitting to struggles with mental health was a sign of weakness. Growing up in a culture where perseverance and self-reliance were highly valued, I often suppressed my emotions, believing I had to carry every burden on my own. However, navigating my mental health challenges has taught me that seeking help is not a sign of failure but an act of courage. This shift in perspective has also deepened my belief in the importance of empathy and understanding. I now recognize that everyone faces battles we cannot see, and the simple act of showing kindness can have a profound impact. These beliefs guide how I interact with others, whether it’s supporting a friend, raising my children, or caring for patients during my nursing clinicals. Relationships My mental health journey has also transformed my relationships. As a single mother of four, I strive to be present and emotionally available for my children, but there are days when my mental health challenges make this difficult. To address this, I have learned to be open with my children about my struggles in age-appropriate ways, modeling the importance of vulnerability and self-care. This openness has strengthened our bond, as they see me not only as a caregiver but as someone who is working to grow and heal. In my friendships and professional relationships, my experiences have made me more patient and understanding. I am better equipped to listen without judgment and to offer support when others are struggling. At the same time, I have learned to set healthy boundaries, ensuring that I prioritize my well-being without overextending myself. These lessons have allowed me to build stronger, more authentic connections with the people in my life. Career Aspirations Perhaps the most significant impact of my mental health journey has been on my career aspirations. My struggles have given me a deep appreciation for the importance of mental health in overall well-being and a desire to address the stigma surrounding it, particularly in underserved communities. As a future nurse, I want to provide holistic care that addresses not only physical health but also the emotional and psychological needs of my patients. My personal experiences have also equipped me with a unique perspective that I can bring to the healthcare field. I understand what it feels like to be vulnerable, to feel overwhelmed, and to navigate systems that can sometimes feel impersonal or dismissive. This empathy drives my commitment to becoming a nurse who listens, advocates, and provides care that makes patients feel seen and valued. Additionally, my mental health challenges have taught me the importance of resilience and adaptability—qualities that are essential in nursing. Whether it’s managing the demands of a fast-paced clinical environment or offering support to a patient in crisis, I know that my journey has prepared me to face these challenges with strength and compassion. Coping and Growth Managing my mental health while pursuing my education and raising a family has required intentional effort and self-awareness. Attending regular counseling appointments has been a cornerstone of my journey, providing me with tools to navigate stress, process emotions, and develop healthier coping mechanisms. These sessions have been a space for growth, helping me better understand myself and my needs. I also make self-care a priority, even amidst a busy schedule. Whether it’s practicing mindfulness, journaling, or spending quality time with my children, these activities help me stay grounded and recharge. By taking care of myself, I am better equipped to care for others—a lesson that will serve me well in my future nursing career. Vision for the Future Looking ahead, I see my experiences with mental health as a source of strength and purpose. I want to use my story to advocate for greater awareness and support for mental health, both in my personal life and in my professional role as a nurse. My goal is to work in settings where I can provide compassionate, culturally competent care, particularly for individuals who face barriers to accessing mental health resources. I also hope to serve as a role model for my children and others in my community, showing that mental health challenges do not define a person’s potential. By sharing my journey and the lessons I’ve learned, I aim to inspire others to seek help, embrace vulnerability, and pursue their dreams. In conclusion, my experiences with mental health have been both challenging and transformative. They have shaped my beliefs about strength, deepened my relationships, and fueled my passion for nursing. While the journey has not always been easy, it has given me a profound sense of purpose and a commitment to using my struggles as a source of growth and inspiration. With every step forward, I am reminded that adversity can lead to resilience, and resilience can lead to meaningful change—for myself, my family, and the people I hope to serve.
      Redefining Victory Scholarship
uccess, for me, is not just about achieving personal goals; it is about creating a meaningful and lasting impact on the lives of those around me. As a single mother of four, a Hispanic woman, and a first-generation college student, my vision of success is deeply rooted in the well-being and growth of my family, my community, and the patients I will serve as a nurse. It is about overcoming obstacles, setting an example for my children, and using my skills and education to improve the world in tangible ways. This opportunity is not just a means to an end—it is the foundation upon which I can build a life defined by purpose, service, and fulfillment. To me, success looks like providing a stable, nurturing environment for my children while demonstrating the importance of resilience and determination. I want my children to see that no matter the challenges life may throw our way, it is possible to rise above them and pursue one’s dreams. Completing my nursing degree is a critical step in this journey. It represents more than just academic achievement; it symbolizes the culmination of hard work, sacrifice, and perseverance. By earning my degree, I will be able to provide my children with financial security, access to opportunities, and the knowledge that their mother refused to give up, even when the odds were against her. In addition to the impact on my family, success means fulfilling my calling to serve others through nursing. My passion for this field stems from my desire to provide compassionate, culturally competent care, particularly to underserved communities. As a Hispanic woman, I have witnessed the disparities in healthcare that disproportionately affect minority populations. I want to bridge those gaps by becoming a nurse who not only delivers excellent care but also advocates for patients who may feel unheard or overlooked. Success means being a beacon of hope for patients during their most vulnerable moments and making a positive difference in their lives. This opportunity will be instrumental in helping me achieve these goals. As a single mother, the financial burden of tuition, books, childcare, and other expenses can be overwhelming. This support would ease those challenges, allowing me to focus more fully on my education and clinical training. It would enable me to reduce the long hours I work as a student worker in my college’s custodial department, giving me more time to dedicate to my studies and my family. The financial stability provided by this opportunity would not only alleviate stress but also allow me to fully immerse myself in the rigorous demands of nursing school, ensuring I am well-prepared for the career ahead. Beyond the immediate financial relief, this opportunity represents a belief in my potential and the value of my aspirations. It is a reminder that others see the promise in my journey and are willing to invest in my success. That encouragement is priceless, as it fuels my determination to keep pushing forward, even on the hardest days. Looking to the future, I see success as a continuous journey, not a final destination. It involves using the skills and knowledge I gain through my education to uplift others. I want to work in community healthcare settings, addressing health inequities and providing education to empower patients to take charge of their well-being. Additionally, I hope to mentor other first-generation students and young mothers, showing them that their circumstances do not define their potential. Ultimately, success is about leaving a legacy of hope, strength, and service. It is about proving that hard work, faith, and determination can overcome even the most daunting obstacles. This opportunity will bring me one step closer to that vision, allowing me to achieve my goals and inspire others to do the same.
      Mental Health Scholarship for Women
Mental health plays a significant role in my academic performance and personal life as I navigate the challenges of being a single mother of four, a nursing student, and a first-generation college student. Living with anxiety, PTSD, depression, and ADHD adds an additional layer of complexity to my daily life, but it has also taught me the importance of resilience, self-awareness, and seeking support. The effects of my mental health conditions can manifest in various ways. Anxiety often causes me to overthink and worry about my ability to manage my responsibilities, while PTSD triggers can disrupt my focus and emotional balance. Depression sometimes makes it difficult to find the motivation to complete tasks, and ADHD can make it challenging to stay organized and on top of my coursework. These struggles can impact my academic performance by making it harder to concentrate, meet deadlines, and feel confident in my abilities. In my personal life, these conditions can make balancing parenting, school, and self-care overwhelming. As a single mother, my children depend on me for stability and support, and it can be difficult to meet their needs when I’m struggling with my own. However, I’ve learned that acknowledging my mental health challenges is not a weakness but a strength. It has motivated me to take proactive steps to prioritize my well-being and set an example for my children about the importance of self-care. To manage my mental health effectively, I take several deliberate steps to ensure it remains a priority. One of the most important actions I’ve taken is attending regular counseling appointments. Therapy provides me with a safe space to process my emotions, develop coping strategies, and learn how to manage stress more effectively. It has been a vital part of my journey, helping me build resilience and stay focused on my goals. I also make a conscious effort to prioritize self-care, even amidst my busy schedule. This means carving out time for activities that bring me peace and joy, such as spending quality time with my children, journaling, and engaging in mindfulness exercises. Staying connected to my faith through prayer and reflection has also been a source of strength, helping me maintain hope and perspective during challenging times. In addition, I’ve developed strategies to manage the specific challenges of ADHD, such as using planners, setting reminders, and breaking down tasks into smaller, manageable steps. These tools help me stay organized and reduce the overwhelm that can accompany juggling multiple responsibilities. By prioritizing my mental health, I am not only improving my academic performance but also creating a foundation for a healthier, more balanced life. My experiences have taught me to approach challenges with compassion for myself and to celebrate progress, no matter how small. As I continue my journey, I hope to use my experiences to connect with others who may be struggling with their own mental health challenges. As a future nurse, I aim to provide compassionate care and advocate for the importance of mental health in overall well-being. My commitment to taking care of myself allows me to be a better mother, student, and aspiring healthcare professional, and I am determined to keep growing and thriving despite the challenges.
      Audra Dominguez "Be Brave" Scholarship
Here’s a draft essay in response to the prompt: Adversity has been a constant presence in my life, shaping me into the resilient and determined person I am today. As a single mother of four children, a Hispanic woman, and a first-generation college student, I have faced numerous challenges—both physical and mental—on my journey to achieving my career aspirations in nursing. Yet, each obstacle has only strengthened my resolve to keep moving forward. One of the most significant adversities I have faced is the challenge of balancing the demands of parenting, work, and education. As a young mother, I had to put my dreams on hold to care for my children. Over time, my responsibilities grew as a single parent, making it difficult to imagine returning to school. However, my desire to create a better future for my family and my calling to serve others through nursing motivated me to take the leap. When faced with overwhelming responsibilities, I rely on a combination of strategies to persevere. First, I have learned the importance of time management and planning. Every day, I create a detailed schedule to balance my children’s needs, my coursework, and my job as a student worker in the custodial department at my college. By staying organized, I can prioritize tasks and ensure that nothing is overlooked, even during the busiest times. Second, I lean heavily on my support system. My family, friends, and mentors have been instrumental in helping me navigate the challenges of returning to school. Whether it’s providing childcare, offering words of encouragement, or simply listening on tough days, their support reminds me that I am not alone in this journey. Another key strategy has been cultivating resilience through self-care and faith. Pursuing a demanding nursing program while raising a family requires mental and emotional strength. I make it a priority to carve out moments for prayer, reflection, and activities that recharge me. My faith has been a guiding light, reminding me that every challenge is an opportunity to grow and that perseverance will lead to a greater purpose. Financial hardship is another form of adversity I have encountered. Paying for tuition, books, childcare, and daily expenses as a single parent is a constant struggle. To address this, I have sought out scholarships, financial aid, and part-time work opportunities to support my education. While it has not been easy, these efforts have allowed me to stay on track and continue pursuing my dream. Through all these challenges, my passion for nursing has kept me focused. I am driven by the desire to make a difference in the lives of others, particularly those in underserved communities. I want to be a source of comfort, care, and advocacy for patients who face their own adversities. This purpose motivates me to push through the difficulties, knowing that my future career will allow me to turn my experiences into something meaningful. Adversity is not something I shy away from—it is something I confront head-on. Each challenge I have faced has taught me to adapt, persevere, and grow stronger. With determination, faith, and support, I am confident that I can continue to overcome any obstacle on my path to becoming a nurse and making a difference in the world.
      Pushing Our Scholars Forward
Here’s a tailored essay draft for your response: I enrolled in my current nursing program because I believe that education is the foundation for creating a better future—for myself, my family, and the community I serve. Nursing is my calling, and pursuing this degree allows me to combine my passion for helping others with my desire to make a meaningful impact in people’s lives. As a single mother of four, a first-generation college student, and a Hispanic woman, this journey is deeply personal. It represents not only a dream I’ve long held but also the chance to inspire others who face challenges similar to my own. The decision to pursue nursing stems from my desire to provide compassionate care and to serve those who are often overlooked in the healthcare system. Growing up, I saw firsthand the barriers that underserved communities face—language obstacles, cultural differences, and lack of access to quality care. I want to bridge those gaps by becoming a nurse who advocates for patients and ensures they receive care that respects their dignity and unique needs. My education is equipping me with both the technical skills and the empathy necessary to excel in this role. Once I complete my degree, I intend to use the knowledge I’ve gained to benefit society in multiple ways. First, I aim to work in underserved areas, offering culturally competent care to Hispanic and other marginalized populations. I also hope to mentor young women and first-generation students in my community, showing them that it’s never too late to pursue their dreams. Ultimately, my goal is to create a ripple effect: to improve the lives of my patients, uplift my children, and contribute to a more equitable healthcare system. Balancing work and school has been a significant challenge, but it has also shaped my character and strengthened my resolve. I currently work as a student worker in the custodial department at my college. This role has taught me invaluable lessons about humility, responsibility, and the importance of every job in contributing to a larger mission. Working while being a full-time student has required careful time management and sacrifice. There are long days when I go from cleaning classrooms to attending lectures and then home to care for my children. While it’s exhausting at times, it has also given me a deep appreciation for hard work and the opportunity to further my education. The experience of working on campus has connected me more deeply to my college community. It has shown me the value of teamwork and the importance of supporting one another, no matter the role we play. These lessons will stay with me as I enter the nursing profession, where collaboration and mutual respect are essential. Although the path has not been easy, I am proud of how far I’ve come. The challenges I’ve faced have only strengthened my determination to succeed and to give back to others. My education and work experience are not just stepping stones to a career; they are shaping me into a compassionate, driven individual ready to make a difference. I look forward to using everything I’ve learned to serve my community and create a better future for my children.

I am motivated to bridge those gaps and ensure that patients, regardless of their background, feel valued and cared for. Becoming a nurse is my way of combining my passion for helping others with my desire to make a tangible difference in the world. My journey as a non-traditional student has taught me to embrace challenges as opportunities for growth. John Young 'Pursue Your Passion' Scholarship
I have chosen nursing as my field of interest because it embodies everything I am passionate about: compassion, service, and the opportunity to make a meaningful impact in the lives of others. Nursing is more than a career to me—it is a calling. As a single mother of four children, a Hispanic woman, and a first-generation college student, my journey has been shaped by a deep desire to serve others and to be a source of hope and healing for those in need. My passion for nursing began early in life, but it was solidified through my personal experiences. Growing up, I was raised by a single mother who worked tirelessly to provide for our family. Her strength and perseverance taught me the importance of caring for others, even when faced with adversity. When I became a teenage mother, I faced challenges that required me to rely on my resilience and determination to move forward. These experiences instilled in me a sense of empathy and a desire to help others who may be navigating their own struggles. Nursing offers the perfect blend of technical skill and human connection. It is a field that requires not only knowledge but also compassion and the ability to make people feel seen, heard, and cared for. I am drawn to the idea of being a steady presence for patients and their families, offering both medical expertise and emotional support during some of their most vulnerable moments. As a nurse, I want to create an impact by serving underserved communities, particularly those facing barriers to healthcare. Growing up in a Hispanic household, I witnessed the challenges that language, cultural differences, and financial struggles can create when accessing medical care. I want to be a bridge for patients who feel overlooked or misunderstood, ensuring they receive the care they need with dignity and respect. My personal goals also motivate me to succeed in this field. First and foremost, I want to set an example for my children. I want them to see that through faith, perseverance, and hard work, it is possible to overcome obstacles and achieve their dreams. I also aim to inspire others in my community who may feel limited by their circumstances. By sharing my journey, I hope to encourage them to pursue their passions and to believe in their potential to create change. Becoming a nurse is not just about achieving a personal dream—it is about dedicating my life to a profession that allows me to make a difference. Whether it’s through patient care, community outreach, or mentoring the next generation of healthcare providers, I am committed to using my education and experiences to serve others. Nursing is my passion, and I am excited to use this career as a platform to impact lives and leave a lasting legacy of care and compassion.

Continuing my education has been one of the most challenging yet rewarding decisions of my life. As a single mother of four children, a Hispanic woman, and a first-generation college student, my inspiration comes from a deep desire to create a better future for my family and to fulfill my calling to serve others as a nurse. While my journey has been filled with obstacles, it has also been shaped by resilience, faith, and a steadfast commitment to my goals. The decision to return to school was inspired by my children and my passion for nursing. I want to show my children that no matter what challenges life presents, education is the key to unlocking new opportunities. Watching them grow has been a constant reminder of why I must keep pushing forward—they deserve to see their mother achieve her dreams and to know that they, too, can overcome any obstacle with hard work and determination. At the same time, nursing has always been my passion. I am drawn to the idea of helping others and making a tangible difference in people’s lives. Continuing my education allows me to combine these motivations, setting an example for my children while pursuing a career that aligns with my values. My journey, however, has not been without its challenges. Becoming a teenage mother and later a single mother of four children meant that I had to grow up quickly and shoulder immense responsibility. Balancing parenting, work, and school has been a delicate act that requires careful planning and constant effort. There are days when the weight of my responsibilities feels overwhelming, but I remind myself of my purpose and lean on my faith to keep going. Financial challenges have also been a significant obstacle. Returning to school as an adult student while providing for a family often feels like walking a tightrope. To overcome this, I’ve learned to seek out resources, from financial aid and scholarships to support networks at my school and community. These have been lifelines that have allowed me to focus on my studies while ensuring my children’s needs are met. Time management is the key to balancing my roles as a mother and a student. I’ve learned to plan my days meticulously, setting aside specific times for studying, attending classes, and spending quality time with my children. I involve my kids in my journey, explaining to them why I am pursuing my education and celebrating small victories with them along the way. Their support and understanding motivate me to keep going, even when the road feels long. Despite the challenges, continuing my education has been transformative. It has given me a sense of purpose, a renewed confidence in my abilities, and the opportunity to pursue a career that allows me to serve others. As I navigate this journey, I am proud of the example I am setting for my children and the strength I have found within myself. The obstacles I’ve faced have only made me more determined to succeed, and I am excited to see how my education will open doors to new possibilities, both for me and for the people I hope to care for as a nurse.

Education is the bridge between where I am and where I want to be. As a single mother of four children, a Hispanic woman, and a first-generation college student, pursuing higher education has been a transformative journey. It has given me the tools and confidence to rewrite my story and chart a path toward a brighter future for myself, my family, and my community. My decision to return to school was fueled by my desire to break generational cycles and create opportunities for my children. Growing up, I was raised by a single mother who worked tirelessly to provide for our family. Although she didn’t have the chance to pursue higher education herself, she instilled in me the value of perseverance and a deep respect for learning. When I became a teenage mother, those lessons became my foundation. I realized that earning a degree wasn’t just about personal achievement—it was about securing a future for my children and showing them what is possible through hard work and faith. As a nursing student, my education is preparing me for a career that aligns with my passion for helping others. Nursing is more than a profession to me; it is a calling that allows me to serve with compassion, skill, and empathy. Through my studies, I am learning not only the technical aspects of patient care but also the importance of advocacy, communication, and cultural sensitivity. These lessons will enable me to provide high-quality care while addressing the unique needs of diverse communities. Education is also giving me the confidence to lead and inspire. My journey as a single mother balancing school, work, and parenting responsibilities has shown me the power of resilience. I want to use my experiences to mentor other students and young mothers who may feel overwhelmed by their circumstances. By sharing my story and offering guidance, I hope to show them that they are capable of achieving their dreams, no matter how daunting the journey may seem. Looking ahead, I am committed to giving back to society in meaningful ways. My ultimate goal is to use my nursing degree to serve underserved communities. As a Hispanic woman, I understand the barriers that many people face when accessing healthcare—language barriers, financial constraints, and a lack of trust in the system are just a few examples. I want to be a bridge for those who feel unseen or unheard, ensuring that they receive the care and support they deserve. Beyond my career, I also hope to contribute to society by being a role model for my children and others in my community. I want my children to see that education is not just about personal success but about using your knowledge and skills to uplift others. By pursuing my dreams, I hope to inspire them to chase their own, knowing that they, too, can make a difference in the world. Education has already begun to change my path forward. It has opened doors that once seemed out of reach and given me a renewed sense of purpose. With each step I take, I am not only building a better life for my family but also paving the way for a legacy of service and hope. I am excited to see how my journey unfolds and how I can continue to give back to society in the years to come.

They see their mother striving for her dreams, and I hope it inspires them to pursue their own with the same tenacity. Leadership is a role I have embraced in many forms. At home, I am the foundation my children rely on for stability and guidance. In school, I am a mentor and motivator for my peers, particularly other nontraditional students who face similar challenges. As a single mother of the Christian faith, I believe that my journey to becoming a nurse is not just a career choice, but a calling that God placed on my heart. Through my own trials and triumphs, I have felt His guidance leading me to a life of service, compassion, and healing. My faith is the foundation of my strength, and I strive to reflect God’s love in my actions—whether it’s raising my children, serving my community, or caring for patients in their most vulnerable moments. From a young age, I was drawn to the idea of helping others. However, it wasn’t until I faced some of life’s toughest challenges that I realized nursing was my true calling. Becoming a teenage mother and later a single mother of four children brought significant struggles, but it also deepened my faith and reliance on God. During moments of doubt and exhaustion, I turned to prayer, asking for strength and direction. Each time, I felt a renewed sense of purpose and the reassurance that I was meant to care for others. My role as a mother has greatly influenced the type of nurse I aspire to be. My children are my greatest blessings and my driving force. They see me studying late into the night and balancing countless responsibilities, and I hope my dedication shows them the power of faith, perseverance, and the importance of answering God’s call. I want to be a beacon of light for them, reminding them that even when life feels overwhelming, God has a plan for each of us. In my community, I aim to be a source of hope and encouragement, especially for those who feel overlooked or underserved. As a Hispanic woman and a first-generation college student, I understand the barriers that many face when seeking opportunities or accessing care. I want to use my voice and skills to advocate for equity in healthcare, ensuring that every individual feels valued and heard. In the workplace, I hope to inspire my colleagues by embodying the principles of grace, kindness, and empathy. Nursing is a profession that demands teamwork and compassion, and I believe that treating each other with dignity creates a positive environment that ultimately benefits the patients we serve. For my patients, I want to be more than just a caregiver—I want to be a source of peace, comfort, and hope. I hope to offer a listening ear, a kind word, or a simple prayer when it’s needed most. Whether I’m providing routine care or walking alongside someone in their darkest hour, I want my patients to feel the presence of God’s love through my actions. Ultimately, I view nursing as a ministry. It is a way for me to live out my faith by serving others and spreading hope in a world that often feels broken. My journey has not been easy, but it has been purposeful, and I am grateful for the opportunities God has placed before me. As I continue to walk this path, I will remain steadfast in my commitment to be a light for my children, my community, my colleagues, and every patient I have the privilege to care for.
