Church was a nonnegotiable every Sunday and Wednesday, as well as nightly Bible studies. This upbringing instilled in me a reverence for spirituality and a profound belief in God's omnipresence and guidance. It's expected that "forcing" a religion onto children can turn to have a bad image of religion on the individual, however, as for my experience, it only pushed me further to discover the God my parents trusted to fuel our faith and build a personal relationship for myself. While my upbringing provided a solid spiritual foundation, my personal faith journey evolved as I earnestly sought to deepen my relationship with Jesus. Through life's trials and challenges, I discovered solace, strength, and clarity through prayer and scripture. These moments of seeking God's wisdom and experiencing His peace affirmed the reality of His existence and His active involvement in my life. It was hard to be an outcast and choose to live the life God has as His will for my life but I knew deep inside that was my intended purpose. Through a lot of lessons, mistakes, and coming to an understanding, I shifted my life to walk in the purpose He designed for me. These experiences have shaped my understanding that faith is not merely a cultural heritage but a personal journey of exploration and discovery. It is through my relationship with Jesus that I have found purpose, hope, and assurance, affirming my belief in the divine design evident in all aspects of creation. It was one of the first weekends of summer coming from college studying medicine all semester. The air buzzed with excitement and anticipation as the DJ played the hottest opening song and as fans eagerly waited for the show to start. One of my favorite quotes from "The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry" is: "In the midst of the hurry, life becomes a thing to be managed rather than enjoyed." It's a good reminder that sometimes, the best way to care for our patients is to simply be present with them. "Medical Apartheid" by Harriet A. Washington has opened my eyes to the historical injustices that have existed within the medical field, emphasizing the urgent need for equity and justice in healthcare. Whenever I read "Medical Apartheid," I couldn't help but wonder what my ancestors, who were enslaved in the United States, might have experienced at the hands of medical professionals. It's a heavy topic, but one that is important to confront in order to move towards a more just and equitable healthcare system. As a young African woman, I am acutely aware of the disparities that exist in healthcare, particularly for minorities and women. It is my goal to use my platform as a medical doctor to advocate for these groups and work towards greater access to quality healthcare for all. Through seeking out opportunities to work with marginalized populations, particularly in developing countries where healthcare resources are often limited, I plan to make a positive impact. My ultimate dream is to return to Kenya one day and work towards creating change in the healthcare system. Whenever I visit Kenya, I also make sure to indulge in my love for ugali, a traditional Kenyan dish made of maize flour. I like to think that this staple food gives me the energy I need to tackle the challenges of the medical field. As I visited Kenya more frequently to visit family, I began to witness firsthand the devastating effects of the water crisis on local communities. Water sources were scarce and often contaminated, leading to a high prevalence of waterborne diseases. This experience inspired me to create a UV water filter for my science fair project, with the goal of providing a cost-effective and efficient solution to the water crisis in Kenya. My UV water filter consisted of a regular clear plastic bottle filled with water and equipped with a UV light that destroyed harmful bacteria and viruses. I also incorporated granular activated carbon (GAC) since it is a proven option to remove certain chemicals found in unclean water. The filter was easy to use and could be produced at a low cost, making it accessible to communities in need. To test its effectiveness, I conducted a series of experiments and found that the filter significantly reduced the presence of harmful bacteria in contaminated water. If given the necessary resources and funding, I would expand upon this project by developing a larger-scale UV water filtration system that could provide clean water to entire communities. This system would be designed to be user-friendly and cost-effective, making it accessible to communities with limited resources. In addition to the filter itself, I would also develop educational materials and outreach programs to help communities understand the importance of clean water and proper sanitation practices. To make this project a reality, I would need funding for materials, equipment, and research. I would work with local organizations and experts to ensure that the filter met safety and regulatory standards. I believe that everyone deserves to live a healthy and happy life, and I am dedicated to helping others achieve that through my career in the medical field and my personal commitment to a healthy lifestyle. Despite obstacles slowing our efforts to achieve worthy goals and pursue limitless dreams, they ultimately allow us to develop levels of resistance that prepare us for future adversity, develop our inner fortitude, and acquire skills that make us more competent. In the course of my struggle to complete virtual school during the quarantine portion of the pandemic, I started to lose sight of my apparent career path. I began to contest myself and my capability, lost my adoration for science, and even desired to alter my career path. I was met with obstacles, particularly remarks from others, which began to leave wounds. After considering these words as valid, I permitted them to become the essence of my identity. If we have a tendency to experience life intensely, learning from our hardships will contribute to our inner strength and our ability to overcome future adversity. Ultimately, our ability to resist is determined by our inner fortitude. It is what demonstrates our abilities to those who watch our every move, as well as who determines whether or not we deserve to be given a chance. Growing up loving everything science and STEM-related, I came across a few challenges as well as outsiders who asserted that women should not pursue these fields. It did not help matters that in each of the regional and state science competitions I was a finalist in, a male won the first prize. The impression I got was that my peers did not believe that women, particularly black women, were capable of pursuing careers in STEM disciplines such as biomedical engineering, computer science, or medicine. I was motivated to become the change I wanted to see after going through a 3-step ladder on Google Images of doctor to female doctor to black female doctor in order to find representation. Eventually, I succumbed to the doubt they fed me and began to doubt myself as well. Because I let the opinions of those who did not believe in me overshadow my own, which were originally established to motivate myself, I let all opportunities I had to further my career in science pass me by. As a result, I explored other career fields, particularly education, due to the fact that it is an extremely common profession for women. However, other career fields I explored didn't have the same influence on me as medicine did. In the wake of an identity crisis and my realization that I was not subject to what others thought, I returned to my adoration of science and all that it entails. As I took courses like Health Science Theory & Lab, in which I obtained certifications, I became entirely gripped with the subject matter. Because of these certifications, I have a head start in medicine and have discovered my desire for patient care, which I was able to undergo with peers who likewise share the same desire. As I struggled through my crisis of not believing I was qualified for a career in science, I realized that it increased my inner fortitude as well as my resistance to future obstacles. The more confident I became in my ability to succeed in a science-related career, the less words from peers or outsiders affected me. Having faced this adversity, I was able to realize that this was all a crucial element of my future success.

Since me being a little girl, I always knew I wanted to pursue a career in the medical field. The idea of studying the anatomy of the body and helping people get better as a job has fascinated me for years and continues to as I start my career pathway. As I've grown up, I realized the healthcare system, like many other systems, is corrupt in multiple areas, but especially in racial diversity. Racial diversity in healthcare is prominent for reasons such as being able to asses the needs of minority patients and receiving higher quality care. I always think to the episode of Grey's Anatomy where Jackson Avery realizes that he must quit his job as a plastic suergon in order to focus on the inequities in the healthcare system as well as the pandemic's disproportionally large impact on communities of color everywhere. He took initiative to step up with his family name, and use it for a better cause. Although Jackson Avery is a fictional character, his advocacy for justice for the healthcare system inspires me to do the same in the future. I hope to pursue a career in the public healthcare area and be an individual of representation to other black women around the world. I believe that this amazing scholarship will allow me to get a step closer to pursuing the dream of career I'm driven to accomplish.
