Dashanna K. McNeil Memorial Scholarship
From an early age, I was drawn to the idea of helping others, but it wasn’t until my grandmother became critically ill that I truly understood the power of compassionate healthcare. Watching the nurses care for her during her final days was both heartbreaking and inspiring. The intentionality and compassion demonstrated by these individuals left an everlasting mark that shaped my desire to become a nurse.
I met Dashanna when she started attending Ephesus SDA church in Columbia, SC, where I was born and raised. The McNeil family has been a big inspiration to me and my family. Not only did we live just a few neighborhoods apart, but we've attended the same church for decades. Dashanna was always a bright-spirited person that loved others. She has truly been an inspiration to many.
Over the past seven years, I’ve worked in critical care where I’ve learned that healthcare is more than medication and machines, it consists of trust, advocacy, and human connection. Every shift, I encounter patients from all walks of life, many of whom are from underserved communities. Their stories have shaped my purpose and reminded me that equitable care is not a privilege, it’s a right. These experiences have deepened my commitment to ensuring that this right, along with compassionate care, is not only upheld, but actively demonstrated in my everyday practice.
I am now pursuing a degree in Healthcare Leadership because I want to be a change agent. I want to combine my frontline experience with executive insight to improve access, efficiency, and quality for every patient. I also look to be an advocate for my fellow healthcare professionals, ensuring that they are able to work in a safe, well-equipped environment with practical policies. As a full-time nurse, student, and mother of three, I understand the meaning of balance, determination, and sacrifice. Returning to school was not a decision I took lightly, but I knew that enhancing my leadership skills was essential if I wanted to implement broader changes in healthcare.
Financially, the decision to pursue higher education has been a significant stretch for our family. Yet I believe that investment in knowledge pays lifelong dividends. Scholarships like this one are critical in helping dedicated healthcare professionals like me continue our journeys without placing undue strain on our families.
Beyond my professional experience in critical care, I bring a unique lens to leadership that is shaped by empathy, firsthand knowledge of health disparities, and an unrelenting desire to uplift others. I strive not only to improve systems but to mentor the next generation of nurses and providers. I believe that when we equip caregivers with adequate training and support, and strategic tools, we create a ripple effect of better outcomes and better care.
Being selected would not only ease a financial burden but would affirm my mission to lead with compassion and purpose. With your support, I will be better positioned to transform the very systems that patients and providers depend on.

Living the life of my dreams would include providing for my family and being a healthcare advocate. As a minority woman in the healthcare sector, I've experienced many setbacks and obstacles; however, my desire to succeed reached far beyond any difficulties placed before me.
