Being raised in a single-parent household, with the added dynamic of caring for my paraplegic mother and supporting my younger siblings, has profoundly shaped who I am today. From a young age, I was thrust into a position of responsibility—helping with household tasks, assisting my mother, and guiding my younger brothers through their schoolwork. These experiences instilled in me a strong work ethic, resilience, and a deep sense of empathy for others. I’ve learned the importance of showing up for the people who need you, even when life feels overwhelming. This understanding has become the foundation for my future goals and the kind of person I want to be.
Growing up in this environment has also driven me to pursue opportunities that allow me to make a difference. One of the most meaningful projects I’ve worked on was called OSA Vision, which I developed during my internship at Meijer. The project focused on improving on-shelf availability by using computer vision to detect gaps on retail store shelves. The objective was to create a system that could identify when products were missing by analyzing security camera footage, improving inventory management and ensuring products were available for customers. I felt deeply passionate about this project because it challenged me to use cutting-edge technology in a creative and impactful way.
The problem I faced was that the existing security cameras weren’t originally designed for this type of application. Their positioning and resolution weren’t ideal for identifying specific products or shelf gaps. To overcome this, I had to think outside the box. I started by collecting images from store security cameras in the cereal aisle. However, I quickly realized the limitations of these cameras—many of the angles didn’t clearly show the products on the shelves. To address this, I decided to take iPhone photos in-store to simulate what better camera placement might achieve, gathering a clearer set of data for the project.
Once I had the images, I began labeling them to train a machine learning model. I used a combination of security camera photos and iPhone images to create a robust dataset. The next step was integrating planogram data into the system. Planograms are store layouts that indicate where specific products should be placed. By combining this information with the images, I was able to develop a model that not only detected gaps but could also identify which specific products were missing from the shelves. This was a significant advancement because it allowed us to recognize the exact items out of stock and quickly restock them, minimizing the chances of disappointing customers.
This project was inspiring because it demonstrated how even small technological improvements can lead to significant changes in business operations. On-shelf availability is crucial in retail. By developing a computer vision model that could detect and identify missing items, I helped the company optimize its inventory management system. Knowing that my work could improve the customer experience and boost operational efficiency was incredibly fulfilling.
