My name is Stacy, and I am a 45-year-old single mother to an incredible 8-year-old daughter. Recently, we escaped from a situation of severe mental and physical abuse, where we relied on my daughter's father for everything. Leaving that environment was one of the most difficult decisions I’ve ever had to make, but it was crucial for our safety and well-being.
Now, it is just the two of us, navigating life together from scratch. Despite these challenges, I have maintained a 3.5 GPA in my studies at Southern New Hampshire University. We currently live in a family housing unit, classified as very low income, but I am determined to build a better future for us.
Every day, I strive to excel academically and provide for my daughter, aiming to give her the life she deserves. The financial strain is significant, but I remain committed to my education as a means to secure a brighter, more stable future for us.
This scholarship would greatly ease our burden and enable me to focus more on my studies and less on our immediate financial struggles. Thank you for considering our story.

TRAM Purple Phoenix Scholarship
Surviving intimate partner violence changes you in ways that words often fail to express. It doesn’t just leave scars—it leaves questions, fears, and a burning need to make sure others don’t have to endure the same pain. My journey from surviving to healing has shaped every aspect of who I am today, and it’s what fuels my desire to pursue a degree in psychology with a concentration in mental health and community services. I don’t just want to earn a degree—I want to use it as a tool for healing, education, and empowerment for others like me.
The path out of an abusive relationship is never linear. For many survivors, the biggest barriers aren’t just physical safety—they’re emotional, financial, and psychological. I know what it feels like to be isolated, to feel unheard, and to wonder if you’re strong enough to start over. That’s why I’ve made it my mission to become the kind of support system I once needed—a trauma-informed mental health professional who can walk beside people during their darkest moments and help them rebuild their lives with dignity.
Education is the foundation for this mission. Through my coursework in psychology and human services, I’m learning how trauma affects the brain and behavior, how to provide culturally sensitive care, and how systemic barriers impact access to resources. I plan to pursue graduate school to become a licensed mental health counselor and eventually open a community-based practice that specializes in trauma recovery, particularly for survivors of domestic violence, childhood abuse, and complex PTSD.
But I don’t want to stop there.
My personal experiences have taught me that true healing doesn’t happen in isolation. It requires safe communities, understanding professionals, and public awareness. That’s why I plan to be active in advocacy and education alongside my clinical work. I envision developing workshops, collaborating with local shelters, and working with schools to implement healthy relationship education from a young age. I want to help change the narrative around abuse—eliminating the shame survivors often carry and replacing it with the truth: that surviving is an act of courage, not weakness.
Beyond professional aspirations, I’m also a mother to a young daughter. My experiences have taught me how vital it is to break the cycle of violence for the next generation. By modeling self-respect, emotional intelligence, and resilience, I hope to raise her in a world where she feels empowered to speak her truth and advocate for others. Everything I’m working toward—every class I take, every paper I write—is not just for me, but for her and the future I want her to grow up in.
Receiving this scholarship would allow me to stay focused on my education and training without the added stress of financial strain. More importantly, it would be a symbol that my past does not define me—my purpose does. I carry the weight of my story with pride, not because of what happened to me, but because of what I’ve chosen to do with it.
I plan to use my degree and my lived experiences to be a voice, a guide, and a safe space for others on their path to healing. Survivors need to know that not only is healing possible, but that they are not alone in it. I’m here to remind them—and to help lead the way.
Christina Taylese Singh Memorial Scholarship
My name is Stacy Dorman, and I am currently pursuing a degree in psychology with a concentration in mental health and community support. As a full-time sophomore maintaining a 3.5 GPA, I am passionate about making mental health care more accessible, particularly for underserved communities. This drive stems from my personal experiences and a deep commitment to creating systems of support for individuals who feel unseen and unheard.
My journey toward a career in mental health began with witnessing how mental health challenges can affect individuals and families. Growing up, I saw the profound impact that a lack of resources could have on someone's ability to cope and thrive. These experiences motivated me to take action, not just for myself but for others facing similar struggles. Over the years, I have volunteered with crisis hotlines and community organizations, offering support to those in need. These experiences have deepened my understanding of mental health crises and the importance of accessible, trauma-informed care.
Through my academic pursuits and volunteer work, I have developed skills in active listening, conflict resolution, and community outreach. I have seen the transformative power of mental health services, especially when they are delivered with compassion and understanding. My goal is to become a licensed mental health counselor specializing in trauma-informed care, with a focus on advocating for mental health education in schools and workplaces. I envision a world where mental health is no longer stigmatized and where individuals have the tools and support they need to navigate life’s challenges.
The legacy of Christina Taylese Singh resonates deeply with me. Her dedication to helping others through occupational therapy mirrors my own mission of empowering individuals to overcome adversity and achieve their potential. While I have chosen a path in mental health, the underlying goal remains the same: to improve lives through care, compassion, and empowerment.
As a single mother, the journey to achieve my educational and professional goals has not been without challenges. Balancing the demands of parenthood, academics, and volunteering has required resilience, determination, and careful planning. However, these experiences have only strengthened my resolve to succeed and set an example for my daughter. I want her to see that with hard work and passion, it is possible to overcome any obstacle.
This scholarship would provide critical financial support, allowing me to focus more on my studies and community involvement. It would alleviate the burden of balancing financial stress with academic and family responsibilities, enabling me to dedicate myself fully to becoming a mental health professional. I am determined to honor Christina’s memory by making a lasting impact in the field of mental health and by helping others discover their own strength and resilience.
Thank you for considering my application. This opportunity would not only bring me closer to my dream but also allow me to carry forward the spirit of selflessness and dedication that Christina embodied. With your support, I can continue to work toward a future where mental health care is accessible to all and where every individual has the opportunity to lead a fulfilling life.
Once Upon a #BookTok Scholarship
If I could curate my ideal bookshelf inspired by #BookTok recommendations, it would feature a mix of genres that encapsulate the magic and emotional depth that readers across the platform have come to love. From fantasy to romance to contemporary fiction, these books are not only widely beloved, but they also have shaped the way readers discuss and share literature online.
At the top of my shelf would be The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller. This retelling of the Greek myth has captured the hearts of thousands, leaving an indelible mark on the #BookTok community. Its exploration of love, loss, and friendship, set against the backdrop of war, resonates deeply with readers who seek stories that evoke intense emotions. The Song of Achilles is one of those books that prompts heartfelt discussions about humanity, destiny, and the concept of fate. The novel has also encouraged many readers to dive into more classical literature and myth retellings, sparking an interest in stories like Circe and other mythological tales.
Another essential title would be It Ends With Us by Colleen Hoover. Hoover’s novels have become a staple on #BookTok, and It Ends With Us has particularly stood out for its raw and honest portrayal of difficult relationships. The novel's impact on the community extends beyond simple entertainment; it opens conversations about emotional and physical abuse, resilience, and self-worth. Many users share personal reflections after reading this book, creating a space for readers to connect with one another on a deeper level, especially regarding themes of overcoming adversity.
In the fantasy genre, A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas is a must-have. This series has become a #BookTok phenomenon, not only because of its lush world-building and captivating romance but because it has created a subculture of fans who celebrate its strong characters and intricate plotlines. ACOTAR fans consistently push the boundaries of creative content on #BookTok with theories, fan art, and cosplay, showing how deeply this series has embedded itself into the community’s culture.
Another title that has left its mark on #BookTok is The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid. This historical fiction novel captures readers with its glamour, scandal, and deeply human exploration of identity and ambition. Its discussion of LGBTQ+ themes has inspired conversations about representation in media, sparking widespread discussions on inclusivity within the #BookTok space.
Finally, The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern would round out my ideal bookshelf. Its dreamlike quality and magical realism have enchanted readers across the platform, leaving them spellbound by the novel’s intricate world and whimsical atmosphere. The novel’s appeal lies in its timeless beauty and themes of destiny, love, and magic, which draw readers into a world they never want to leave.
These titles have become iconic in the #BookTok community for their ability to evoke deep emotion, open meaningful conversations, and inspire creative expression. My ideal bookshelf reflects not only the impact of these books on readers but also the way they’ve shaped the culture of sharing and discussing literature in this digital age.
Ella's Gift
I have always believed in the power of resilience, though my journey toward understanding it has been far from easy. My experiences with mental health and substance abuse have shaped me into the person I am today—someone deeply committed to personal growth and recovery, to use my education to help others who may be facing similar challenges.
My struggles began during my teenage years when I was overwhelmed by anxiety and depression. It felt like no matter what I did, the weight of these emotions wouldn’t lift. I tried to push through, but the pressure only led me to seek relief in unhealthy ways. I turned to substance abuse as an escape, believing it would make my problems go away. What started as occasional use quickly spiraled into addiction, and I found myself in a cycle I couldn’t control. Once filled with potential, my life was filled with fear and isolation.
The turning point came when I hit rock bottom and realized my future was slipping away. I had lost sight of my educational goals and nearly lost my relationship with my daughter, who needed me to be strong for her. The thought of losing everything I cared about motivated me to seek help. With the support of my family, I entered a rehabilitation program, where I learned not only how to break free from addiction but also how to manage my mental health in healthier ways. It was the hardest thing I’ve ever done, but it saved my life.
Through therapy, I developed coping mechanisms that allowed me to face my struggles head-on. I learned to lean on others for support instead of isolating myself and realized that asking for help wasn’t a sign of weakness but strength. I began focusing on self-compassion and forgiveness, knowing that healing would be a long journey, but I was committed to seeing it through.
As I continued my recovery, I rediscovered my passion for education. I re-enrolled in school, pursuing a degree in psychology with a focus on mental health and community support. My goal is to become a counselor, specifically working with those struggling with mental health and substance abuse, because I understand the importance of having someone who truly listens and cares during the most challenging moments.
My academic goals have become an integral part of my recovery process. Not only do they give me something to work towards, but they also provide me with a sense of purpose. I want to help others break free from the cycles of addiction and mental health challenges, just as I did. Education has provided me a foundation to continue growing and contributing to my community.
Moving forward, my plan for maintaining my recovery involves a combination of ongoing therapy, support from friends and family, and staying active in recovery groups. I regularly attend meetings with others in recovery, giving and receiving support. I am also focused on maintaining a healthy lifestyle through exercise, mindfulness practices, and keeping a balanced schedule that allows me to prioritize my mental health and academic goals.
Though my journey has been difficult, it has given me a profound sense of purpose. I am proud of the progress I’ve made and even more determined to achieve my goals, both academically and personally. I believe that by continuing my education and working in the mental health field, I can make a meaningful impact on the lives of struggling others, just as I once did. I want to be a source of hope and encouragement for those who feel alone in their battles because I know firsthand that there is always a way forward, no matter how difficult the road may seem.
Stephan L. Wolley Memorial Scholarship
I am a dedicated student-athlete who has been balancing both academic and athletic commitments throughout my education. My name is Stacy Dorman, and I am currently pursuing my degree as a sophomore at Southern New Hampshire University, where I maintain a 3.5 GPA. I am also a single mom to an almost 9-year-old daughter who is heavily involved in sports, which makes athletics a major part of my life both personally and as a mother.
Growing up, my family always emphasized the importance of education, hard work, and determination. As the oldest of three children, I watched my parents work tirelessly to provide for our family and instilled in me the values of perseverance and resilience. Although my parents were not athletes themselves, they encouraged me to participate in sports to learn teamwork, discipline, and leadership skills. I’ve passed this love for sports on to my daughter, who excels in basketball, soccer, and softball.
My family dynamic changed significantly when I became a single mother, but it only motivated me further to succeed. Raising my daughter while balancing my education and athletics has been challenging, but it has also strengthened my time-management skills and determination. I want to set an example for my daughter by showing her that hard work and passion can open doors, even when life presents obstacles. She is my biggest inspiration, and every day, I push myself not only to achieve my own goals but also to help her reach hers.
Education has always been a priority for me, and attending college has been a personal goal for as long as I can remember. I’ve taken a nontraditional route, with some time off to raise my daughter, but I am committed to earning my degree and using it to build a stable future for our family. I am pursuing a degree in psychology, with a focus on mental health and community support, as I am passionate about advocating for mental health awareness and supporting others who may be facing similar challenges.
Looking ahead, I see myself working in the mental health field, helping individuals and communities in need. My athletic background has taught me the importance of perseverance, and I believe this lesson will carry over into my professional life, where I plan to advocate for both mental and physical well-being. With my dedication to both education and sports, I hope to be a role model for my daughter and others in my community, showing that despite life’s difficulties, success is always achievable through determination and hard work.
Jennifer and Rob Tower Memorial Scholarship
Kindness is a value I hold dear in all areas of my life, and I strive to make it a part of how I interact with the world. One of the most significant instances of kindness in my life is centered on my role as a single mother, running a small business, and supporting my daughter in her various activities. Despite having a busy schedule balancing school, work, and family, I always make it a priority to extend kindness to those around me, whether through volunteering or simply offering a listening ear to those in need.
One specific instance of kindness that stands out is when I helped a fellow single mother in my community who was going through a particularly tough time. She was juggling financial hardships, personal struggles, and the pressures of raising her children alone. I could relate to her situation, so I offered my support by helping her with childcare and connecting her with local resources for financial aid and counseling services. I knew that small acts of kindness, such as offering her my time, guidance, and companionship, could ease some of her burdens. What began as a few small gestures grew into a lasting friendship, and seeing her rebuild her life with newfound confidence and stability was incredibly rewarding. I learned that sometimes, the most impactful acts of kindness come from simply showing up for others during difficult times.
Another way I’ve demonstrated kindness is through my small business, Dorman Designs, where I create beaded pens and other accessories. While my business is a way to support my family, I’ve also used it as a platform to give back to the community. For example, I’ve donated a portion of my profits to local mental health organizations and causes related to sports and youth activities, which are both near to my heart. Additionally, I offer free beaded pens to teachers in my daughter’s school as a token of appreciation for their hard work and dedication. These small acts of generosity have been a way for me to express gratitude and give back to the community that supports me.
Furthermore, I volunteer at local mental health awareness events. After losing my mother to a heart attack and experiencing personal struggles with anxiety and depression, mental health advocacy became a cause close to my heart. I’ve used my experience and education in psychology to offer support and resources to others facing mental health challenges. Whether it’s through organizing fundraising events or simply offering a shoulder to lean on, my goal is to make mental health care more accessible and reduce the stigma around seeking help. These efforts, while seemingly small, create ripples of kindness that I believe can make a meaningful impact on the lives of others.
Kindness is a powerful force that can change lives, and I am committed to carrying this value forward in everything I do. From being there for others during tough times to using my business and education as a platform for giving back, I aim to embody the spirit of generosity that Jennifer and Rob Tower stood for. In a world that can often feel overwhelming, I believe that acts of kindness and compassion are what truly make a difference.
Receiving this scholarship would not only help support my educational journey but would also allow me to continue spreading kindness through my business, my community, and my future career in mental health. By continuing to act with kindness and compassion, I hope to honor the legacy of Jennifer and Rob Tower, and make the world a better, more caring place for everyone I encounter.
ADHDAdvisor's Mental Health Advocate Scholarship for Health Students
Supporting others in their mental health journeys has been a deeply personal mission for me, driven by my own experiences and challenges. After losing my mother to a sudden heart attack when I was 35, I struggled with anxiety and depression. During this time, I found solace in therapy and the support of my community, which inspired me to advocate for mental health awareness in any way I could. I began sharing my story with others to help break the stigma surrounding mental health, encouraging open conversations among my friends, family, and community.
As a psychology student at Southern New Hampshire University, I am focused on mental health and community support. My goal is to become a licensed mental health professional, specifically working with those affected by trauma, anxiety, and depression. I believe that empathy and understanding are the cornerstones of mental health care, and I strive to incorporate these qualities into my approach with clients.
In addition to my studies, I have participated in local mental health awareness events and offered support to those close to me who are facing similar struggles. By providing resources and simply listening to others, I aim to create a safe space where people can talk openly about their mental health challenges.
In the future, I hope to create community programs that provide accessible mental health care to underserved populations. I plan to use my education and career to advocate for policy changes that ensure mental health care is a priority within the healthcare system. By fostering environments that prioritize mental well-being, I aim to support both individuals and communities, ultimately helping to change the narrative around mental health.
Barbara Cain Literary Scholarship
Books have always been a source of comfort, knowledge, and growth for me. From a young age, I was captivated by stories that transported me to different worlds, helped me understand different perspectives, and opened my mind to new possibilities. Whether I was diving into classic literature, psychology textbooks, or inspirational self-help books, reading has been a constant part of my life and has shaped not only who I am but also where I want to go in life.
One of the most impactful books I’ve ever read is "The Power of Now" by Eckhart Tolle. It taught me about mindfulness and the importance of being present in each moment. In a world filled with stress and distractions, this book helped me navigate difficult times, especially after the sudden loss of my mother when I was 35. Grieving such a personal loss was overwhelming, but reading helped me find calm and balance, particularly when life felt chaotic. Tolle's message about living fully in the present allowed me to better care for myself and my daughter while moving forward with purpose.
Reading has also fueled my passion for psychology. Books like "The Body Keeps the Score" by Bessel van der Kolk have deepened my understanding of trauma and mental health, and have played a key role in shaping my academic and career goals. I am currently pursuing a degree in psychology at Southern New Hampshire University with a focus on mental health and community support. My goal is to become a licensed mental health professional and work with individuals who face trauma, anxiety, and depression, providing them with the care they need to heal.
In addition to the personal lessons I’ve gained from books, they have also taught me to dream bigger and aim higher. Reading has shown me that knowledge is not confined to a classroom; it is everywhere, ready to be absorbed by those who seek it. Books have given me the courage to pursue my goals despite the obstacles I’ve faced as a single mom and small business owner. Managing my daughter’s busy schedule, my own education, and running Dorman Designs, my beaded creations business, is no small task. But the inspiration I draw from books keeps me motivated to keep going.
In the future, I hope to use what I’ve learned from books to help others. As a mental health professional, I plan to incorporate bibliotherapy—using books as a therapeutic tool—into my practice. Books can provide solace, offer new perspectives, and help people process their emotions. I want to create a space where clients can heal not just through traditional therapy but also through the power of stories and knowledge.
Receiving this scholarship would support my educational journey and allow me to continue expanding my love for books and learning. I believe that the lessons I’ve learned from books will not only help me achieve my goals but will also enable me to make a positive difference in the lives of others.
Mental Health Profession Scholarship
As someone who has faced mental health challenges firsthand, my journey toward healing has been filled with both hardship and hope. Growing up, I struggled with anxiety and bouts of depression that often left me feeling isolated. My mental health challenges became especially difficult after the sudden passing of my mother when I was 35. She died from a massive heart attack just two days after my brother's wedding, and the grief and shock from this event sent me into a deep emotional spiral.
Becoming a single mom to my daughter at a young age only added to the pressure. The weight of raising a child while managing my grief and anxiety felt overwhelming at times. Yet, it was through these challenges that I found strength and resilience. Seeking therapy, creating a support network, and learning coping mechanisms have all been instrumental in helping me manage my mental health. I realized that mental health is not something to overcome once and for all; it’s a continuous process that requires ongoing care and attention.
Through my experiences, I have become passionate about mental health advocacy. I am currently pursuing a degree in psychology with a focus on mental health and community support at Southern New Hampshire University. I want to help others who face similar struggles and show them that they are not alone in their battle. My goal is to become a licensed mental health professional, working directly with underserved communities to provide access to mental health services. I believe that everyone deserves access to care, and I want to break down the stigma surrounding mental health so that more people feel comfortable seeking help.
In addition to my academic pursuits, I’ve found ways to support others in my community. I have participated in local mental health awareness events and often share my story with others to encourage open conversations about mental health. I also make time to listen to friends and family members who are struggling with their own mental health challenges, offering them support and resources whenever possible. Being there for others has helped me heal as well, and it motivates me to continue pushing forward with my education and career goals.
Raising awareness for mental health will be a central part of my work in the future. I plan to advocate for accessible mental health care in communities that lack resources and use my voice to spread awareness about the importance of mental well-being. Through education and outreach, I want to help dismantle the stigma associated with mental illness and ensure that people get the support they need before their struggles escalate.
Receiving this scholarship would not only ease the financial burden of my education but also support my journey to becoming a mental health professional who can positively impact the lives of others. My own mental health struggles have given me empathy and a deep commitment to helping others, and I am determined to use these experiences to make a lasting difference in the world of mental health.
John J Costonis Scholarship
Growing up in a low-income household and facing many challenges has only made me more determined to succeed and create a better future for myself and my daughter. I am currently a sophomore at Southern New Hampshire University (SNHU), pursuing a degree in psychology with a focus on mental health and community support. My future goal is to become a licensed mental health professional, specializing in community-based services. I am passionate about making mental health care accessible to those in need, particularly in underserved communities, and advocating for mental health awareness and support.
As a single mother, the journey to reach my goals has not been easy. I balance my full-time studies with raising my almost 9-year-old daughter, who is highly active in sports. Our days are often packed with schoolwork, practices, and games, leaving very little downtime. In addition to my role as a mom and a student, I run my own small business, Dorman Designs, where I create and sell beaded jewelry, pens, and other handmade items. My business helps me support my family while also allowing me to express my creativity.
Working towards my degree has been a challenge both financially and emotionally. Coming from a low-income background, I’ve had to be resourceful in order to afford my education. I’ve taken out student loans, applied for scholarships, and used my business to help cover costs. I am grateful for the opportunities I’ve had, but financial stress is always present. On top of that, juggling my various responsibilities can be overwhelming, and there are days when it feels impossible to manage it all.
Despite these hardships, I remain focused on my goal. My motivation comes from my desire to create a better life for my daughter and to make a difference in the lives of others. Mental health issues have affected many people around me, and I want to be part of the solution. Through my studies at SNHU, I am gaining the knowledge and skills I need to contribute to this field, but I know the road ahead will continue to present challenges.
This scholarship would provide much-needed financial relief, allowing me to focus more on my studies and my business, rather than worrying about how I will afford my next semester. My work ethic and determination come from the belief that I can create a brighter future, and I will continue to push forward despite any obstacles that come my way. I believe that, like John J. Costonis, hard work and dedication will lead me to success, and I am committed to seeing my goals through.
John Nathan Lee Foundation Heart Scholarship
Heart disease has shaped my life in ways I never expected. Ten years ago, I lost my mother suddenly to a massive heart attack. She was just 59 years old, and the timing made it even more devastating—only two days after my brother's wedding, when we were supposed to be celebrating a new chapter in our family's life. Her death was completely unexpected, especially since she had been given a clean bill of health just a month before. Losing her so suddenly and tragically was one of the hardest things I've ever experienced.
My mother’s passing wasn’t the first time heart disease had taken someone close to me. My grandmother, my mother’s mother, died of a heart attack at the age of 56, and heart problems have haunted our family ever since. My father and all four of his siblings suffer from atrial fibrillation (Afib), a condition that puts them at higher risk for stroke and other heart complications. My younger brother, who is only three years younger than me, has already had to have his heart rhythm "jumped" several times to return it to normal. With such a long history of heart disease on both sides of my family, I am constantly aware of how fragile heart health can be and how quickly it can change a life.
Despite the emotional toll that heart disease has taken on me, I’ve worked hard to persevere and honor my mother’s memory. I am currently a sophomore at Southern New Hampshire University, maintaining a 3.5 GPA while raising my almost 9-year-old daughter on my own. My daughter is incredibly active in sports, and keeping up with her busy schedule means my days are full. In addition to school and motherhood, I run my own business, Dorman Designs, where I create unique beaded items. Managing all of these responsibilities hasn’t been easy, but losing my mother and knowing the risks my family faces has given me the drive to keep moving forward.
This scholarship would provide me with the financial support I need to continue my education and honor my family’s battle with heart disease. My ultimate goal is to advocate for heart health and support those who face the same struggles my family has endured. By earning my degree and sharing my story, I hope to help raise awareness and make a difference in the lives of others affected by heart disease. The memory of my mother and grandmother, and the ongoing health challenges my family faces, fuel my determination every day.
Powering The Future - Whiddon Memorial Scholarship
Overcoming adversity has been a fundamental aspect of my journey toward higher education. Ten years ago, I faced the sudden loss of my mother, which profoundly affected my life and academic trajectory. My mother, who was only 59, passed away from a massive heart attack just days after my brother's wedding. Her sudden departure left a void that was difficult to fill, and the grief that followed was overwhelming. This period was marked by emotional turmoil and financial instability, as I struggled to balance my responsibilities as a single mother to my young daughter, Ava, while managing the pressures of academic life.
The impact of this loss extended beyond my personal life and significantly influenced my educational journey. The emotional strain made it challenging to focus on my studies, leading to a temporary decline in my academic performance. However, this adversity also fueled my determination to pursue a degree in psychology with a concentration in mental health. I realized that understanding and supporting mental health was crucial not only for my personal healing but also for helping others who faced similar challenges.
My passion for pursuing a degree in STEM—specifically in the field of psychology—stems from a deep-seated desire to make a positive impact on individuals and communities affected by mental health issues. The field of psychology offers a powerful means to understand and address the complexities of mental health, and I am committed to contributing to advancements in this area. My educational path has been guided by a clear vision of using psychological principles to support mental well-being, promote resilience, and address the broader societal impacts of mental health challenges.
Financial circumstances have added another layer of difficulty to my educational journey. As a low-income single mother, I face significant financial challenges in balancing the costs of tuition, living expenses, and supporting my daughter. My annual income from my small business and SNAP benefits is modest, and it is not enough to cover all my educational and living expenses. Despite these challenges, I remain steadfast in my commitment to my academic and professional goals. The financial support from the Whiddon Memorial Scholarship would alleviate some of the burdens associated with my education, allowing me to focus more on my studies and less on financial strain.
Receiving this scholarship would not only provide crucial financial assistance but also serve as a testament to the value of perseverance and determination. It would enable me to continue my education with greater ease and dedicate myself fully to my studies and future career. With this support, I would be better positioned to achieve my goals of contributing to the field of psychology and making a meaningful difference in the lives of individuals affected by mental health issues.
In summary, overcoming personal adversity has shaped my educational journey and fueled my passion for pursuing a degree in psychology. The financial challenges I face are significant, but the support from the Whiddon Memorial Scholarship would provide invaluable assistance as I work toward achieving my academic and professional goals. This scholarship represents not only financial relief but also a beacon of hope and validation for my commitment to making a positive impact in the field of mental health.
Women in Healthcare Scholarship
From a young age, I have been deeply drawn to the field of healthcare, motivated by a blend of personal experiences and a profound desire to make a difference in people's lives. Growing up, I witnessed the significant impact of compassionate care through my interactions with healthcare professionals during my mother’s illness and subsequent passing. Online ADHD Diagnosis Mental Health Scholarship for Women
Mental health plays a significant role in every aspect of my life, particularly as a full-time student, single mother, and caregiver. Attending school while balancing these responsibilities can be overwhelming, and the strain on my mental health often affects my academic performance and personal life. The weight of these multiple roles, combined with the pressure to succeed, can lead to stress and anxiety that sometimes impacts my focus and ability to stay organized. However, I have learned that taking care of my mental health is just as important as succeeding academically, if not more so.
During my time in school, I have experienced periods of heightened anxiety, especially when major deadlines coincide with personal struggles at home. Balancing my studies with my responsibilities as a mother to my 8-year-old daughter and as a caregiver to my 70-year-old father, who has dementia, often leaves me feeling emotionally and mentally drained. The demands of caregiving, especially dealing with my father's illness, add another layer of complexity to my life, making it difficult to maintain a sense of balance. At times, this manifests in academic burnout, where I struggle to stay motivated and feel exhausted by the constant demands on my time and energy.
To mitigate these challenges, I have made a conscious effort to prioritize my mental health. One of the most important steps I take is to set boundaries. I know that I can't be everything to everyone all the time, so I schedule specific times for self-care. Whether it’s a quiet moment to myself before the day starts, a quick meditation session, or just time to unwind with my daughter, I make sure to carve out time for activities that help me recharge emotionally and mentally. These small moments of self-care are essential to maintaining my overall well-being.
Another step I take to prioritize my mental health is seeking support from trusted individuals in my life. I lean on my family and friends when I need encouragement or help with caregiving. I also use therapy as a vital resource, as it gives me a safe space to process my emotions, fears, and challenges. Therapy has been instrumental in helping me develop coping mechanisms for the pressures of caregiving, academics, and motherhood. It allows me to remain focused on my goals, while also taking care of my mental well-being.
Additionally, I incorporate mindfulness and exercise into my daily routine. Practicing mindfulness helps me stay grounded and prevents me from becoming overwhelmed by the demands of the day. Exercise, even if it’s just a short walk, gives me an outlet for stress and helps me clear my mind. These practices are not only beneficial for my mental health but also improve my concentration and academic performance by allowing me to approach my studies with a clear and calm mind.
In school, I have learned to manage my time more effectively to reduce stress and avoid becoming overwhelmed by last-minute pressures. This includes breaking down large assignments into smaller, more manageable tasks and setting realistic deadlines for myself. By doing this, I can maintain steady progress without feeling like I’m constantly under pressure. Planning ahead also allows me to accommodate the unexpected demands of caregiving and motherhood without feeling like my schoolwork is being neglected.
Prioritizing mental health also means recognizing when I need to step back and take a break. I’ve learned that pushing myself beyond my limits only results in burnout, which negatively impacts both my academic and personal life. Now, I give myself permission to rest when needed, knowing that it’s essential to my long-term success.

This often means late nights and early mornings, but it has also shown me the importance of staying focused on my long-term goals. The financial strain of being a low-income student means that I rely on work to support myself and my family while pursuing my education. Though it is difficult at times, it has instilled in me a sense of pride in my ability to manage my responsibilities and continue moving forward.
Working while attending school has also given me a deeper appreciation for the value of education. Many people, especially students, often feel isolated or ashamed of their mental health struggles. I believe that by sharing my own experiences and encouraging open conversations, I can help create a more supportive environment. Organizing events such as mental health awareness workshops, panel discussions, and mental wellness fairs on campus could provide valuable education and resources for students. These initiatives would encourage people to seek help when needed and foster a culture of empathy and understanding.

These groups could offer a sense of community and solidarity, reminding students that they are not alone in their challenges. Additionally, peer support networks can serve as a bridge to professional help for those who need it, making it easier for students to seek counseling or therapy.

Outside of campus, I can also make a positive impact by volunteering with mental health organizations and gaining hands-on experience. Volunteering with crisis hotlines, mental health nonprofits, or community counseling centers would allow me to contribute directly to the mental health field while gaining valuable insights and skills. This experience would not only help me grow as a future mental health professional but also allow me to make a tangible difference in the lives of individuals struggling with mental health issues.
Educating Others
Lastly, I can contribute by educating others about mental health, especially those who may not be aware of its importance. Through social media, blogs, or community presentations, I can share information about mental health, coping strategies, and the importance of seeking help when needed. By demystifying mental illness and encouraging open dialogue, I can help break down barriers and foster a more compassionate, informed society.

Navigating Life Through Mental Illness: A Personal Story
My name is Stacy, a 45-year-old single mother to an amazing 8-year-old daughter, Ava. Our journey has been marked by resilience and strength, shaped significantly by our experiences with mental illness. The challenges we have faced have profoundly impacted our lives, influencing our perspectives, relationships, and aspirations.
Impact on My Life and Family
Mental illness has been a defining part of my life and my family's journey. As a single parent, managing my own mental health while caring for Ava has been a delicate balance. My struggles with anxiety and depression have often felt overwhelming, and there have been times when the weight of these challenges seemed almost too much to bear. However, these experiences have also provided me with a deep sense of empathy and an understanding of the importance of mental health support.
My mental health struggles have not only affected me but also had a significant impact on Ava. As a young child, she has witnessed my moments of distress and has had to navigate a home environment where mental health challenges are a constant presence. Despite her young age, Ava has shown remarkable resilience and compassion, qualities that have strengthened our bond and motivated me to seek support and advocate for mental health resources.
Lessons Learned and Moving Forward
Through these experiences, I have learned invaluable lessons about the importance of seeking help and the power of resilience. I have come to understand that mental illness is not a personal failing but a challenge that many people face. This realization has empowered me to seek therapy, connect with support groups, and prioritize self-care, all of which have helped me manage my mental health more effectively.
My experiences have also driven me to become an advocate for mental health awareness and support. I am committed to raising awareness about mental illness and reducing the stigma associated with it. I plan to use my personal experiences to educate others about the importance of mental health care and to support initiatives that provide resources for those in need.
Conclusion
The impact of mental illness on my life and my family has been profound and multifaceted. While the challenges have been significant, they have also shaped me into a stronger, more empathetic individual. My journey has instilled in me a deep commitment to mental health advocacy and a desire to support others facing similar struggles. As I continue to navigate my educational and personal goals, I remain dedicated to using my experiences to make a positive impact and contribute to a more compassionate and supportive community.

Shaping My Goals
My experience with mental health has been a catalyst for redefining my goals. Initially, I struggled to find purpose amidst the chaos of my emotions, often feeling lost and uncertain about my future. However, as I faced my challenges head-on, I discovered a newfound sense of purpose: to contribute to the mental health field and help others navigate their own journeys. Influencing My Relationships
The impact of mental health on my relationships has been both challenging and enlightening. My struggles have often led me to withdraw from those I care about, fearing judgment or misunderstanding. This withdrawal created distance and tension, making it difficult to maintain meaningful connections. Yet, these experiences have taught me the importance of vulnerability and honest communication. I’ve learned that true relationships are built on mutual support and empathy, and that opening up about my struggles can strengthen bonds rather than weaken them. My experiences have also deepened my ability to empathize with others, fostering more meaningful and supportive connections with those around me.
Understanding the World
My mental health journey has profoundly shaped my understanding of the world. I have come to see mental health not as a solitary struggle but as a shared human experience that transcends boundaries and backgrounds. This perspective has increased my awareness of the pervasive stigma surrounding mental health and the urgent need for open dialogue and support. I now approach the world with a greater sense of compassion and a commitment to advocating for mental health awareness and destigmatization. My experiences have shown me that everyone has their own battles, and by fostering understanding and empathy, we can create a more supportive and inclusive society.

Shaping Beliefs, Relationships, and Career Aspirations
The first time I truly confronted my own mental health was a moment that changed everything for me. I remember sitting in a quiet room, feeling the weight of my thoughts pressing down on me, and realizing that I was not just struggling with fleeting sadness but with something deeper and more persistent. This moment marked the beginning of a journey that has profoundly influenced my beliefs, my relationships, and my career aspirations.
Beliefs Shaped by Struggle
My experience with mental health has fundamentally altered my beliefs about myself and the world. I used to think that strength meant always pushing through, hiding my struggles, and never letting anyone see my pain. But as I faced my own battles, I learned that true strength lies in acknowledging our vulnerabilities and seeking help when we need it. This shift in perspective has not only changed how I view myself but also how I approach others. I now believe in the power of compassion and the importance of breaking the stigma surrounding mental health. It has become a core part of who I am, shaping my interactions and guiding my actions. I no longer see mental health struggles as a personal failing but as a challenge that we can overcome together.
Relationships Tested and Strengthened
My mental health journey has also had a profound impact on my relationships. There were times when my struggles created distance between me and those I cared about, as I withdrew into myself and pushed others away. The fear of being a burden or misunderstood often led me to isolate myself. Yet, through this process, I’ve learned the value of open communication and the importance of surrounding myself with people who offer unconditional support. I’ve also become more empathetic and understanding towards others who face similar challenges. These experiences have deepened my connections with those who are willing to stand by me and have taught me the significance of offering support and kindness in return.
Career Aspirations Shaped by Experience
My experiences with mental health have been a driving force behind my career aspirations. I’ve come to realize that my struggles have given me a unique perspective and a deep sense of purpose. I am now pursuing a career in mental health with a burning passion to help others who are facing similar battles. I want to be a beacon of hope for those who feel lost, just as I once did. My own journey has equipped me with empathy, resilience, and a profound understanding of the importance of mental health support. It has become my mission to contribute to a field where I can make a tangible difference in people’s lives, offering the support and understanding that I once desperately needed.
Conclusion:
Reflecting on my experiences, I can see how they have shaped who I am today. My beliefs have evolved to embrace vulnerability and compassion. My relationships have grown stronger through open communication and mutual support. My career aspirations have been forged from my personal struggles and the desire to make a meaningful impact in the field of mental health. This journey has been challenging and at times overwhelming, but it has also been transformative. I am driven by a deep sense of purpose and a commitment to using my experiences to support and uplift others. In sharing my story, I hope to convey not just the struggle but also the strength and hope that has emerged from it.

Reflecting on My Childhood and Its Impact on My Aspirations
Growing up in a challenging environment, the one question I wished I had been asked more often was, “How are you really feeling?” This simple yet profound question, though rarely posed to me, could have offered me a space to express my emotional struggles and aspirations more openly. The absence of this inquiry during my formative years deeply influenced my journey and shaped my current goals.
My childhood was marred by the complexities of living in an abusive household. The emotional and physical turmoil I faced left me with little opportunity to discuss my feelings or dreams. My focus was often on survival rather than on exploring my ambitions or seeking support. As a young girl, I learned to navigate a world where my emotional needs were seldom addressed or validated. This lack of emotional validation and support made me feel isolated and misunderstood.
Reflecting on this, I realize how critical it would have been for someone to ask me about my true feelings. Such a question would have not only provided emotional relief but also encouraged me to articulate my dreams and aspirations. It could have helped me feel valued and understood, fostering a sense of self-worth and confidence that was lacking during my childhood.
The absence of this question has significantly influenced my current goals. As a single mother and a student, I am driven by the desire to create a better life for my daughter and myself. I am pursuing a degree in Psychology with a focus on mental health because I want to provide support to those who, like me, have faced emotional hardship and trauma. I aim to be the kind of mental health advocate who recognizes the importance of addressing feelings and emotions early on, something I wished I had experienced more often.
Moreover, my personal journey has fueled my commitment to community service. I am actively involved in advocating for survivors of domestic violence and supporting mental health initiatives. My experiences have taught me the importance of empathy, compassion, and understanding—qualities that I strive to embody in my professional and personal life.
This scholarship will not only assist me financially but also support my mission to make a difference in the lives of others. It will enable me to continue my education and deepen my understanding of mental health, ultimately allowing me to offer the kind of support and validation that was missing in my own childhood.
In conclusion, the question “How are you really feeling?” represents more than just an inquiry—it symbolizes a critical opportunity for connection, understanding, and support. The absence of this question in my life has profoundly shaped my goals and aspirations. By pursuing a career in mental health and community advocacy, I hope to ensure that others have the support and validation they need to overcome their challenges and achieve their full potential.
