Bright Lights Scholarship
My path to healthcare is paved with resilience, inspired by a life-changing moment—the day I was born—furthering my passion for becoming an OBGYN. It is also deeply personal, inspired by the challenges my mother faced giving birth to me, which she often describes as a miracle.
I was raised in a home where I was taught the value of service and leadership, lessons that have shaped my personal and professional goals. Growing up in a family that emphasized giving back to the community, I learned that meaningful change starts with action. These principles have inspired me to pursue a career that combines healthcare and technology to address critical disparities in underserved populations.
From an early age, I was fascinated by the power of science and technology to change lives. I remember watching medical dramas with my parents and marveling at the ability of doctors to save lives. Over time, my curiosity shifted from the fictional world of TV to the real world, where I became captivated by the medical field and its potential to address disparities in healthcare, especially for underserved communities. This fascination inspired me to pursue a STEM major, specifically in health sciences, as I realized that STEM would provide the foundation I need to address critical issues in healthcare.
Selecting a STEM major was not a decision made lightly; it was driven by passion and purpose. As I matured, I saw the barriers to healthcare faced by many individuals in marginalized communities. Women, especially women of color, often experience disparities in maternal healthcare that result in higher mortality rates and poorer outcomes. This realization ignited my passion to become part of the solution, mainly through a career in Obstetrics and Gynecology (OBGYN). I wanted to use science, technology, and compassion to bridge the gap between high-quality healthcare and those needing it most.
Through my STEM studies, I aim to harness technology to revolutionize maternal healthcare, particularly for underserved populations. One of my goals is to develop healthcare apps and telemedicine platforms that allow healthcare professionals to monitor patients remotely. This would ensure early intervention and accessible care, reducing barriers to timely medical attention. I also plan to be a volunteer with Doctors Without Borders and set up medical facilities in underserved areas of the US and abroad, which underscores my commitment to healthcare equity. My interest in combining technology and medicine led me to choose health sciences as my STEM major because it allows me to explore these areas while gaining the knowledge necessary to effect real change.
Ultimately, I am driven to ensure that my healthcare professional and leader career fulfills my ambitions and significantly improves healthcare access and quality for all. Winning the Bright Lights Scholarship will help me achieve this vision by supporting my educational journey and community-driven initiatives.
William A. Lewis Scholarship
I once thought the biggest challenge in my life would be mastering AP Biology, but that was before I lost my grandmother and realized just how deeply her influence shaped the person I’ve become. Her passing didn’t just leave a void—it shifted my perspective on life and taught me how to turn personal loss into a force for positive change.
At the age of 17, just as I was preparing to enter my final year of high school, my grandmother passed away. She had always been my guiding light—the embodiment of compassion and strength. Her loss could have easily halted my progress, but instead, it inspired me to refocus on what truly mattered: my commitment to helping others, especially those who are often overlooked in healthcare.
To honor her memory, I founded The Prissy Mae Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting financial literacy, anti-bullying initiatives, and STEM education for underserved youth. This foundation allowed me to turn my grief into something constructive, helping me heal while giving back to my community. Through this work, I learned that challenges, no matter how painful, could be transformed into opportunities for growth and positive change.
In addition to creating the foundation, I deepened my involvement in my community, volunteering at local food banks and assisting Spanish-speaking individuals with healthcare needs. These experiences reinforced my belief that healthcare should be accessible to all, regardless of background or income. This realization solidified my passion for becoming an OBGYN and inspired my long-term goal of joining organizations like Doctors Without Borders to advocate for global health equity.
The challenge of losing my grandmother also helped me develop resilience, a trait that will be essential in my future career in medicine. Her passing not only reshaped my perspective but fueled my academic drive, helping me earn a 4.1 GPA while reigniting my passion for service and leadership. Through my work with The Prissy Mae Foundation, I’ve gained critical skills in leadership, empathy, and problem-solving—qualities I know will serve me well as I work toward providing equitable healthcare to underserved populations.
In many ways, overcoming the loss of my grandmother became a catalyst for my personal and professional growth. It solidified my belief that even in the face of adversity, there is always a path forward, one that is driven by service, resilience, and a deep commitment to the community. As I embark on my journey at Spelman College, majoring in Health Sciences on the Pre-Med track, I plan to excel academically, engage in meaningful research, and gain experience through internships and community service. With the support of The William A. Lewis Scholarship, I am confident that I can continue to honor her legacy by making a lasting impact in healthcare and ensuring that underserved communities receive the care and support they deserve.

Beulah C. Parker Memorial Scholarship
I didn’t grow up with a stethoscope in my hands, but I always wondered how it would feel to use one. My fascination with healthcare began early, driven by a desire to understand how science and technology could improve lives—especially in underserved communities. Over time, this curiosity evolved into a passion for addressing healthcare disparities, particularly for marginalized populations. This passion ultimately led me to pursue a STEM major in health sciences, where I discovered the potential of technology to bridge gaps in healthcare and create lasting change.
Selecting a STEM major was a thoughtful decision fueled by both passion and purpose. Growing up, I witnessed the barriers many marginalized communities face in accessing quality healthcare. Women, especially women of color, experience maternal healthcare disparities that lead to higher mortality rates and poorer outcomes. This stark reality ignited my desire to become part of the solution, specifically as an Obstetrician-Gynecologist (OBGYN). I aim to combine science, technology, and compassion to bridge the gap between quality care and the people who need it most.
Through my studies, I strive to harness technology to revolutionize maternal healthcare, particularly for underserved populations. One goal is to develop telemedicine platforms and healthcare apps that allow providers to monitor patients remotely, ensuring early intervention and reducing barriers to timely care. My passion for integrating technology with medicine led me to major in health sciences, equipping me with the tools and knowledge to effect meaningful change.
While my commitment to healthcare and STEM has driven me forward, the journey hasn’t been easy. Financial adversity has been a constant challenge. Coming from a family that struggled to make ends meet, I often had to balance academic ambitions with the realities of limited resources. We sometimes faced difficult choices, like deciding between paying for groceries or school expenses. Yet, these challenges taught me resilience and resourcefulness, fueling my determination to pursue my dream of becoming an OBGYN.
My career goals extend beyond becoming a physician. I am committed to advancing accessible and equitable healthcare for all. One of my long-term ambitions is to establish mobile healthcare clinics offering free services such as prenatal care, health screenings, and preventative care to underserved communities. Additionally, I want to create a scholarship fund for minority students passionate about healthcare, ensuring future providers reflect the populations they serve.
I also envision developing technological solutions to improve maternal health outcomes. For example, an AI-powered app could analyze patterns in maternal health data to predict complications and alert healthcare providers to potential risks early on. By integrating artificial intelligence with hands-on care, we could prevent complications and save lives. Combining technology and compassionate care is where I believe I can make the most significant impact, and this vision fuels my dedication to my STEM studies.
Pursuing a STEM major reflects my commitment to tackling healthcare disparities and leveraging technology to improve lives. Despite financial challenges, my drive to become an OBGYN remains unwavering. The Beulah C. Parker Memorial Scholarship would transform adversity into opportunity, allowing me to continue my education and develop innovative solutions that ensure underserved communities receive the care they deserve.
Nikhil Desai Reinventing Healthcare Scholarship
From an early age, I was fascinated by the power of science and technology to change lives. I remember watching medical dramas with my parents and marveling at the ability of doctors to save lives. Over time, my curiosity shifted from the fictional world of TV to the real world, where I became captivated by the medical field and its potential to address disparities in healthcare, especially for underserved communities. This fascination inspired me to pursue a STEAM major, specifically in health sciences, as I realized that STEAM would provide the foundation I need to address critical issues in healthcare.
Selecting a STEAM major was not a decision made lightly; it was driven by both passion and purpose. As I matured, I saw the barriers to healthcare faced by many individuals in marginalized communities. Women, especially women of color, often experience disparities in maternal healthcare that result in higher mortality rates and poorer outcomes. This realization ignited a passion in me to become part of the solution, particularly through a career in Obstetrics and Gynecology (OBGYN). I wanted to use science, technology, and compassion to bridge the gap between high-quality healthcare and the people who need it most.
Across the U.S., healthcare inequality isn't just a distant issue—it's a crisis that disproportionately affects underserved communities, especially women of color, and is a situation I want to change. Addressing these disparities isn’t just a career path; it’s a mission. Growing up in a family grounded in service and leadership, I was taught that meaningful change begins with action. My passion for STEAM and healthcare drives me to create innovative solutions that address these challenges head-on. The Nikhil Desai Reinventing Healthcare Scholarship will empower me to turn my vision of equitable healthcare into reality.
My healthcare journey began with a deep concern for the alarming maternal mortality rates among Black and Indigenous women. This led me to envision a healthcare app that tracks maternal health in underserved areas. The app would enable healthcare providers to remotely monitor patients, ensuring early interventions to reduce complications. This innovation will help close the gap in maternal health outcomes for women in communities where access to quality care is limited. In addition to maternal health, I am committed to increasing healthcare access for rural populations. I aim to develop a telemedicine solution that connects patients in remote areas to medical specialists. This platform would provide critical care without the need for travel, ensuring that geographic barriers no longer determine access to life-saving treatment.
My vision for healthcare doesn’t stop at virtual solutions. I also plan to launch a mobile clinic that offers free healthcare services, from checkups to preventative screenings, in underserved communities. By removing barriers such as cost and transportation, mobile clinics can provide immediate, life-changing care to those who need it most. Representation in healthcare is key to addressing these disparities, which is why I’m dedicated to fostering diversity in the field. I plan to establish a scholarship fund to support minority students pursuing healthcare careers. This initiative will offer financial assistance and mentorship, empowering future healthcare leaders from underrepresented backgrounds to bring their voices and ideas to the forefront of medical innovation.

From a small town in Georgia to the potential Surgeon General of America—my path to helping millions is extraordinary. Growing up in Powder Springs, GA, a community that greatly shaped my values, I was encouraged by my parents, especially my mother, to work hard and pursue BIG dreams. She instilled in me the belief that I was born to help others, setting the foundation for my healthcare leadership aspirations.
In a world where dreams often seem out of reach, my mother taught me that the sky is not the limit; it's just the beginning. Throughout my life, no one has had a greater impact on me than my mother. While it may seem cliché, my appreciation for her influence is deeply sincere. As a child, I often played doctor with my parents, and my mom always encouraged my aspirations, never deterring me from dreaming big. She constantly reminded me that I was born to help people. Because she nurtured my desire to help others, I now have a deep-rooted dream of becoming a respected Obstetrician-Gynecologist (OBGYN) and a hospital administrator. Winning the Norman C. Nelson IV Memorial Scholarship represents a critical step toward transforming my passion for healthcare into actionable, widespread change—especially for underserved communities.
I will be attending Spelman College as a Biology/Pre-Med major, where I intend to shine academically and emerge as a leader in service-oriented campus groups. My academic focus will be on pioneering research in reproductive health and tackling infectious diseases, to share my discoveries through publication. This journey through education is designed to lead me to medical school and, eventually, to a fulfilling career as an OBGYN.
My path to healthcare is paved with resilience, inspired by a single, life-changing moment: the day I was born. My passion for becoming an Obstetrician and Gynecologist (OBGYN) is deeply personal, inspired by the challenges my mother faced giving birth to me, which she often describes as a miracle. This experience has fueled my commitment to improving care for those who are frequently marginalized and underserved.
My passion for healthcare was further ignited by the stark inequalities I observed and the stories of marginalized communities lacking adequate access to medical services. This was further reinforced during my studies in AP Biology, where I learned about the biological processes underlying childbirth and menstrual cycles, alongside statistical studies showing that Black women face significantly higher risks of maternal mortality. This knowledge has driven me to advocate for and work towards change, ensuring that healthcare is not only accessible but also equitable.
I envision a healthcare career that not only allows me to engage in the latest technological and medical advancements but also to address and adapt to the evolving needs of diverse populations. The healthcare industry's dynamic nature presents endless opportunities for innovation and specialization, allowing for significant contributions to both local communities and global health initiatives.
Ultimately, I am driven by the knowledge that my efforts can enhance the well-being and quality of life for countless individuals. Through my work, I aim to bridge gaps in healthcare accessibility and representation, ensuring that all women, regardless of their background, receive the compassionate and comprehensive care they deserve. My goal is to leave a lasting impact on the field of healthcare, making it more inclusive, equitable, and responsive to the needs of every patient.
FLIK Hospitality Group’s Entrepreneurial Council Scholarship
Looking ahead five years, I envision my community facing the undeniable pressures of a population that's doubled since 2024. This growth, while a sign of vibrancy, ushers in challenges that hit close to home: escalating health concerns, looming food security issues, and an education system straining at the seams. These aren't distant worries; they're urgent calls to action that resonate with my personal and professional ambitions.
The expansion has stretched our healthcare system to its limits, with the hospitals and clinics in the area struggling to meet the increased demand. Preventable diseases are on the rise, exacerbated by overcrowded living conditions and inadequate healthcare access. As an individual deeply committed to healthcare equity, I believe the foundation for addressing this crisis starts with advocacy and education. By volunteering with health organizations and advocating for policies that ensure universal healthcare access, I can help lay the groundwork for a healthier future. My long-term goal to influence healthcare policy, inspired by a vision of becoming the U.S. Surgeon General, underscores my commitment to spearheading initiatives that bolster preventive care and healthcare education.
The surge in population has also heightened the risk of food insecurity, as demand outpaces supply and strains our food distribution systems. Community gardens and sustainable farming practices have become more than just a trend—they are necessities. Leveraging my volunteer experience with food banks and understanding of community needs, I plan to promote and participate in local agriculture projects. Encouraging urban farming and supporting policies that safeguard food producers can help ensure that our community does not just survive but thrives. This effort requires a collective will, and by leading community initiatives, I can help foster a culture of self-sufficiency and sustainability.
Finally, our education system, the bedrock of future innovation and societal growth, faces unprecedented pressure. Classrooms are overcrowded, and resources are stretched thin, diminishing the quality of education. My commitment to serving and uplifting the community finds a crucial expression here. By advocating for and investing in education technology and infrastructure now, I aim to mitigate these future strains. Supporting scholarship programs and volunteering as a mentor are immediate steps I can take to alleviate the burden on our schools and ensure that education remains a ladder to opportunity for everyone.
The vision I hold for the future is not of a community overwhelmed by its challenges but of one that rises to meet them with resilience and innovation. My journey, marked by a dedication to service, leadership, and compassion, has prepared me to face these challenges head-on. Whether it's through advocating for healthcare reform, pioneering sustainable food solutions, or improving our education systems, the actions I take today are investments in myself and my community.
Protecting and nurturing our community in the face of rapid population growth requires foresight, collaboration, and a deep commitment to the common good. It is a task that no one person can accomplish alone, but together, we can lay the foundation for a future that is healthy, secure, and educated. My pledge, as I envision myself two decades from now, is to continue being a catalyst for positive change, leveraging my experiences, knowledge, and passion to ensure that my community not only endures but flourishes.

The Morgan STEM Diversity scholarship represents more than financial aid for me; it's a key to unlocking and reaching my life-long goals and aspirations.
Raised in a home where service was a lifestyle and leadership was a responsibility, I have been heavily influenced by the challenges faced by those around me. Early on, I witnessed family and friends experience disparities that seemed to stack insurmountable odds against underserved communities, particularly in healthcare. This awareness ignited a fiery passion within me, one fueled by both the inequities I observed and the personal loss of loved ones who suffered due to inadequate medical care. These experiences solidified my mission to ensure no one else would endure similar hardships due to systemic failures.

Monroe Justice and Equality Memorial Scholarship
"In the words of Beyoncé, " America has a problem." These profound words from one of the world's most influential artists underscore a harsh reality—the fractured relationship between law enforcement agencies and the African American population. From the streets of Ferguson to the halls of Congress, the cries for justice and reform reverberate, demanding attention and action.
In recent years, tensions between law enforcement agencies and the African American population in the United States have been fraught with distrust and discord. The legacy of systemic racism, historical injustices, and instances of police brutality have deeply strained these relationships, highlighting the urgent need for reform and reconciliation. To foster greater trust and cooperation, law enforcement agencies must embark on a multifaceted approach centered on accountability, community engagement, and cultural sensitivity.
First and foremost, accountability within law enforcement is paramount to rebuilding trust with the African American community. This entails holding officers accountable for misconduct and implementing transparent disciplinary measures to address instances of abuse or discrimination. Adopting body-worn cameras, establishing civilian oversight boards, and conducting thorough investigations into allegations of misconduct are crucial steps toward ensuring accountability and promoting transparency within law enforcement agencies. By holding officers accountable for their actions and acknowledging wrongdoing when it occurs, agencies can demonstrate their commitment to upholding justice and fairness for all citizens.
Moreover, meaningful community engagement is essential for bridging the divide between law enforcement and the African American population. Police departments should prioritize building relationships with community leaders, grassroots organizations, and neighborhood residents through dialogue, outreach initiatives, and collaborative problem-solving efforts. Establishing regular town hall meetings, organizing community policing initiatives, and facilitating youth mentorship programs can foster positive interactions between officers and community members, thereby fostering mutual respect and understanding. By actively listening to the concerns and perspectives of the African American community, law enforcement agencies can cultivate trust, address grievances, and co-create solutions to enhance public safety and well-being.
Additionally, enhancing cultural sensitivity and diversity within law enforcement agencies is critical for improving relationships with the African American population. Recruiting officers from diverse backgrounds, providing cultural competency training, and promoting inclusive policing practices can help mitigate biases and stereotypes that contribute to racial disparities in law enforcement interactions. Emphasizing de-escalation techniques, implicit bias training, and restorative justice practices can equip officers with the skills and awareness needed to effectively engage with diverse communities in a respectful and equitable manner. By embracing diversity and cultural competence as core values, law enforcement agencies can build bridges of understanding and foster greater empathy and trust between officers and the communities they serve.
In conclusion, fostering positive relationships between law enforcement agencies and the African American population requires a concerted effort to promote accountability, community engagement, and cultural sensitivity. By prioritizing transparency, accountability, and justice, law enforcement agencies can demonstrate their commitment to upholding the rights and dignity of all citizens. Through meaningful engagement and dialogue, agencies can build trust, address systemic issues, and co-create safer and more equitable communities for generations to come.

There, I've learned how to be an effective leader, and how to communicate in a way that I am understood. I know that I can transfer these skills into my career path, and they encourage me that I can make a difference, no matter how small. I've used my Spanish-speaking skills to translate at food banks at local churches. Through this, I have been able to explore a culture that is not my own. I have strengthened my community engagement through my volunteer work. While working with local organizations, making connections with the leaders of the organizations and the people in the community. I have learned the gift of communicating which will equip me greatly in my studies and career goals of becoming an OB/GYN (Obstetrician and Gynecologist).
Throughout my high school career, I’ve had multiple opportunities to take on a leadership role. There is one place I serve that has captured my heart. The Walton Ridenour Adventure Center has impacted me significantly during my time there. The center is an after-care facility for children who live in the Walton Ridenour affordable housing community. Also known as Mission 1:27, the program’s mission is to serve the community, all while sharing the truth of God’s word. I go there twice a week to read, worship, and build relationships with the kids in my community. This ministry has given me the chance to use the gifts and talents that I have to help others. I love reading, both for school and for pleasure, and reading with younger kids or teaching them vowel sounds and reviewing phonics is no different. We read fun short stories, chapter books, and plays discussing real-world topics like racism and disabilities. I do my best to hear what the kids have to say, and listen to what they ask for, and in turn, I adapt the reading style I use depending on the child. I encourage the kids to sound out words when they find them difficult to read. I assure them that I am there to help them become a better reader.
Through my experiences at the center, I have learned both my strengths and areas of growth when it comes to leadership. Being a leader can be seen as encouraging, motivating, and guiding a person or people to achieve a specific goal. I work on these traits often so that I am constantly growing and staying focused on the skills I have. I also want to take these skills I learn and apply them to my career path as an Obstetrician/Gynecologist. I love children, and getting them into the world healthy and safe has a special place in my heart. I want to ensure that moms have the best care and feel safe in the delivery room. To achieve this challenging goal, I have to continue to develop and hone in on the skills that I learn and how to apply them in the future.
As I bring my essay to a close, I am reminded of the profound significance of furthering my education. This scholarship serves as a pivotal stepping stone, propelling me closer to my dreams and aspirations. I’m determined and committed to making a difference, I am eager to embark on this transformative journey.
STAR Scholarship - Students Taking Alternative Routes
From my earliest memories, I've been drawn to the fields of medicine and leadership, dreaming of becoming an esteemed Obstetrician-Gynecologist (OBGYN) and a hospital administrator. The STAR Scholarship stands as a beacon of hope, illuminating the path to transform this vision into reality. Beyond the playful pretend games of doctor with my parents, my journey is fueled by a profound commitment to extend healthcare access to the overlooked and underrepresented—a mission that has grown alongside me.
My journey towards a career in medicine is deeply influenced by my passion for science and a heartfelt desire to help others. This dual interest has been nurtured through both my academic pursuits and personal experiences. In particular, my engagement with reproductive health during my AP Biology course—studying complex feedback mechanisms in cellular communication, such as those involved in childbirth and menstrual cycles—underscored the critical shortage of Black women in the medical field. This gap is especially concerning in light of CDC reports that Black women are disproportionately affected by maternal mortality, being three times more likely to die from pregnancy-related causes than women of other races. These stark disparities highlight an urgent need for change, a change I am committed to being a part of.
In addition to my passion for helping others, a college education will equip me with the
necessary knowledge and skills to excel, particularly in terms of critical thinking. Cultivating this
mindset will undoubtedly prepare me for the rigors of medical school. College holds immense
importance for me as it presents a unique opportunity to gain an in-depth understanding of the
medical field I wish to pursue. I firmly believe that college will nurture my personal and
professional growth, allowing me to develop effective communication and time management
skills, both of which are essential for a successful career. Moreover, furthering my education will
not only provide financial stability but also enable me to support my parents during their
retirement years. Witnessing my older family members, who attended college, now pursuing
their respective career goals as a lawyer and a teacher, serves as an immense inspiration. The
prospect of aligning my career with my passion fuels my motivation to become the best version
of myself and contribute to society as a productive citizen, even amid its chaos.
As I bring my essay to a close, I am reminded of the profound significance that furthering
my Education holds for me. This scholarship serves as a pivotal stepping stone, propelling me
closer to my dreams and aspirations. With unwavering determination and an unyielding
commitment to making a difference, I am eager to embark on this transformative journey. Your
generous support will not only shape my future but also empower me to create a lasting impact
on the world around me. I extend my heartfelt gratitude for considering my application and for
the opportunity to pursue my ultimate dream.
Sarah Eber Child Life Scholarship
As I think about personal adversity at the age of 17, what stands out in my mind is the loss of my grandmother and best friend in April of 2021. I had just become a freshman in high school and I was not able to focus on my studies or participate in any extracurricular activities. I was completely heartbroken and empty, I felt defeated because God ignored my prayers for her healing. I thought my life was over and I could not go on. Due to my losing focus on my studies, I struggled to complete my freshman year with a good overall grade point average. Knowing the high expectations that my grandmother had for me was my only encouragement to push forward. I knew in my heart that she would expect me to forge ahead and complete the year with nothing less than greatness (4.0 GPA). My mom prayed for me a lot as she saw me truly struggling with the loss of my granny, my best friend. Although my heart was heavy, and my mind was not at peace, I pushed myself daily to finish the school year on a positive note with a 4.1 grade point average.
My grandmother imparted so many great lifelong lessons and wisdom to me. She taught me that no matter what challenges I may face if I trust God and his plan for my life things will work out for my good. She also taught me to believe in myself and that I can accomplish whatever I put my mind to. She was “Granny” to me and she encouraged me to always treat people with love and respect because we do not know their circumstances. I am grateful for everything she did for me and the lessons she taught me. I believe the wisdom she gave me will carry me through my next journeys in life, college, and then Medical School.
As I bring my essay to a close, furthering my education after my undergraduate studies is crucial to my ultimate dream, and the Sarah Eber Child Life Scholarship will help me to take one step closer to my goals and aspirations. Your generous support will not only shape my future but also empower me to create a lasting impact on the world around me. I extend my heartfelt gratitude for considering my application and for the opportunity to pursue my ultimate dream.
Zamora Borose Goodwill Scholarship
From my earliest memories, I've been drawn to the fields of medicine and leadership, dreaming of becoming an esteemed Obstetrician-Gynecologist (OBGYN) and a hospital administrator. This Zamora Borose Goodwill Scholarship represents a crucial step towards making that dream a reality. As a child, I would often play doctor with my parents, but my desire to help people goes far beyond make-believe. As I look back, it was an early expression of my commitment to bringing healthcare to those often underrepresented and overlooked. With this scholarship, my ambitions feel more within reach.
I view college as a transformative journey, preparing me for my future career both intellectually and socially. My passion for helping others is complemented by the critical thinking skills a college education offers. My interest in science, particularly reproductive health, was sparked in my AP Biology class. Studying the intricate feedback mechanisms in cellular communication, such as those involved in childbirth and menstrual cycles, emphasized the critical need for increased representation of Black women in the medical field. This need is underscored by alarming disparities in maternal mortality rates among Black women, a pressing issue that demands immediate attention and action.
I plan to attend Spelman College as a Biology/Pre-Med major, where I intend to shine academically and emerge as a leader in service-oriented campus groups. My academic focus will be on pioneering research in reproductive health and tackling infectious diseases, with the goal of sharing my discoveries through publication. This journey through education is designed to lead me to medical school and, eventually, to a fulfilling career as an OBGYN.
In parallel with my medical career, I aim to grow The Prissy Mae Foundation, a non-profit I founded to champion women's rights, combat bullying, and empower the youth. My commitment to service extends beyond borders, as I plan to volunteer with Doctors Without Borders and spearhead the development of medical facilities in underserved regions of the U.S.
Looking to the future, I envision myself in the role of U.S. Surgeon General, dedicating my efforts to promoting healthcare equality, accessibility, and affordability nationwide. My ambitions are deeply intertwined with my education, a spirit of service, and Christian values, guiding me toward a career dedicated to making a significant impact on healthcare in America.
As I bring my essay to a close, I am reminded of the profound significance that furthering my education holds for me. This scholarship serves as a pivotal stepping stone, propelling me closer to my dreams and aspirations. With unwavering determination and an unyielding commitment to making a difference, I am eager to embark on this transformative journey.

The Women in STEM Scholarship is pivotal in transforming this aspiration into reality. As a child, I would often play doctor with my parents, but my desire to help people goes far beyond make-believe. It was a manifestation of my desire to extend healthcare to the underrepresented and overlooked. This scholarship makes my goal more attainable.
I view college as a transformative journey, preparing me for my future career both intellectually and socially. My passion for helping others is complemented by the critical thinking skills a college education offers. Science fascinates me, especially reproductive health. In my AP Biology class, studying feedback mechanisms in cellular communication, such as in childbirth and menstrual cycles, highlighted the need for more Black women in medicine. This is vital, considering CDC reports indicating that Black women are three times more likely to experience maternal mortality than women of other races. These disparities call for urgent change.
In my mission to make a meaningful impact in the medical field, I established The Prissy Mae Foundation, which is dedicated to promoting financial literacy, anti-bullying, and STEM education among youth. This foundation is more than just a project; it stands as a testament to my leadership style and my commitment to hard work and integrity. Through this endeavor, I am forging a path toward a future enriched with diverse voices in STEM, aligning perfectly with the concerns to foster a community of women to be empowered by knowledge, create equal opportunities in STEM, and the goals of this prestigious scholarship.

In conclusion, this scholarship will help me make significant strides toward fulfilling my lifelong dream of becoming an OBGYN and working tirelessly to improve the health and well-being of all women.

I envision college as a transformative experience, one that will prepare me intellectually and socially for my future career and adult life. As I approach my college years and continue to grow in knowledge, I anticipate the many opportunities for learning and self-discovery. Science, in particular, captivates me, and I yearn to delve into the extensive realm of knowledge it offers, with a special focus on reproductive health. In my AP Biology class last year, we explored the concept of positive and negative feedback in cellular communication. Childbirth and menstrual cycles serve as prime examples of positive feedback, where the response to a stimulus increases due to encouraging signals. These examples mirror a profound truth—that for positive change to occur, more Black women need to succeed in the medical field. By doing so, we can inspire young Black girls to realize that a career in medicine is indeed within their grasp. Representation matters, not only for the youth but also for the women under their care. Disturbingly, according to the CDC, Black women are three times more likely to experience maternal mortality compared to women of other races. Given the advancements in technology and the abundance of resources available in hospitals today, these racial disparities in healthcare are heart-wrenching. It is imperative that we, as a community, rise to the occasion and become the catalysts for change in the field of medicine.

David Foster Memorial Scholarship
In my short 17 years of life, I have had the awesome opportunity to have some outstanding teachers. The one person who has had a profound impact on my life is Dr. Nikki Hamilton. I met Dr. Hamilton as a freshman and she instantly became a mentor and friend. She recognized that education goes beyond textbooks and taking exams. I want to emphasize that my appreciation for her influence in my life is genuinely heartfelt.
She is the epitome of drive and hard work, surpassing many teachers I have had over the years. Dr. Hamilton exudes selflessness, consistently prioritizing the needs of her students over herself. She encourages me to be my best self, she corrects my sometimes not-so-good behavior to be dismissive to my friends. Her constant encouragement has left an indelible mark on my life, propelling me toward personal growth and self-improvement. I remember when my grandmother passed in 2021, I was angry at the world and my anger carried over to school. I was constantly sarcastic, cold, and unfriendly to my peers. Dr. Hamilton cared enough to pull me aside and have that motherly mentoring conversation with me. She explained that it’s ok to be angry, she understood as she had lost her grandmother at a young age as well. But I had to be nicer to people and be gentle in how I handle others. She told me that I was not living just existing! Those words were profound, they changed my life and mindset instantly. We both shed tears that day and I knew then she was the best teacher I had ever encountered. She told me to let my guard down so that I allowed myself to build lasting friendships.
As I entered into my senior year, I shared with Dr. Hamilton that I wanted to attend Spelman College. I remembered this college was her alma mater and asked her if she would share any additional knowledge about the college. She has played a pivotal role in guiding me through the college application process to Spelman. I asked her if she would provide my college recommendation letter and she proofread my college essay for Spelman. She gave the finishing touches on what the administration would likely look for in an essay. We both celebrated when I found out on 12/15 that I had been accepted.
As I reflect on the influence of Dr. Hamilton, I am reminded of the impact she has had on my personal growth and development. I am inspired to follow in her footsteps, actively seeking opportunities to contribute to my community and be a positive light in the world. I want to make her proud as I continue my education and professional endeavors at Spelman.
In conclusion, I am profoundly grateful for her presence in my life, and I am committed to becoming the best version of myself because of the valued lessons she gave me. With the assistance of this scholarship, I am confident that I can continue my personal and academic growth, ultimately making a positive impact in my chosen field and the lives of others.

It is imperative that we, as a community, rise to the occasion and become the catalysts for change in the field of medicine.
In addition to my passion for helping others, a college education will equip me with the necessary knowledge and skills to excel, particularly in terms of critical thinking. Cultivating this mindset will undoubtedly prepare me for the rigors of medical school. College holds immense importance for me as it presents a unique opportunity to gain an in-depth understanding of the medical field I wish to pursue. I firmly believe that college will nurture my personal and professional growth, allowing me to develop effective communication and time management skills, both of which are essential for a successful career. Moreover, furthering my education will not only provide financial stability but also enable me to support my parents during their retirement years. Witnessing my older family members, who attended college, now pursuing their respective career goals as a lawyer and a teacher, serves as an immense inspiration.
As I bring my essay to a close, I am reminded of the profound significance that furthering my education holds for me. This scholarship serves as a pivotal stepping stone, propelling me closer to my dreams and aspirations. With unwavering determination and an unyielding commitment to making a difference, I am eager to embark on this journey. Your generous support will not only shape my future but also empower me to create a lasting impact on the world around me. I extend my heartfelt gratitude for considering my application and for the opportunity to pursue my ultimate dream.
Fall Favs: A Starbucks Stan Scholarship
The Iced Apple Crisp Oatmilk Shaken Espresso from Starbucks is one of the new fall drinks and is my favorite. This delightful concoction, with its wonderful blend of flavors, is refreshing and warm for this season. The first sip gives you the crispness of apple brown sugar syrup, the creaminess of oatmilk, and the kick of expresso that all create a warm party of flavors in your mouth. Its presence marks the beginning of my personal fall narrative, adding a layer of anticipation and delight to the seasonal transition. This drink reminds me of the talks I use to have snuggled next to my grandma. She holds a special place in my heart and now so does the new fall drink. I am excited for the fall as I know spring is coming and I will be graduating, and starting my new journey in life.
In my fall narrative, this drink takes the role of a dynamic character. Having a leisurely weekend, reading a fiction novel under a warm throw. Or possibly, taking a long walk with friends in the fall breeze. It becomes the friend during the self-reflecting moments, doing homework, a source of inspiration that turns a simple coffee break into a ritual of seasonal indulgence. The iced nature of the drink, while nontraditional for the fall adds a modern twist, which represents the adaptability and innovation that characterize this particular changing of seasons. It is a refreshing option to the autumn line of beverages at Starbucks!
The Iced Apple Crisp Shaken Espresso is not just a fall favorite, it's a partner in creating memories and having new experiences. For me, it symbolizes the evolving nature of fall traditions like going to the pumpkin patches, apple picking, the Fall Festivals and Fairs in my community, my mom making Thanksgiving plans, and eating sweet potato pie. Furthermore, this beverage becomes a storyteller, infusing each chapter of my fall experiences with its unique flavors.
As fall transitions into winter, this drink leaves a memorable mark on my heart, a note to remind me of the changing seasons. This fall-inspired drink has become a staple character in my fall narrative, contributing to its unique flavors and refreshing taste, embodying the season with each delightful sip. I believe the addition transcends that of a mere drink, it is a companion, an innovator, and a storyteller, contributing to the richness and vibrancy of my autumn story.

As I think over all the movies, I have seen at the age of 17, the most impactful for me is “Imitation of Life”. The movie was originally released in 1934 based the Fannie Hurt’s acclaimed novel. I saw the remake, released in 1959 and directed by Douglas Sirk. It is a classic film that has resonated with people for many years. The movie dealt with issues of race, class, and the complexities of the relationships between mother and daughter. The film had a profound impact on my life as I watched with deep emotions. I was angry, sad, and happy all at the same time. It provoked me to reflect on how harsh societal issues like racism and the loss of one's identity were happening then and still exist today.
At its core, "Imitation of Life" tells the story of two women, Lora Meredith (Lana Turner) and Annie Johnson (Juanita Moore), who form an unlikely friendship. Lora is a struggling actress trying to make a name for herself, while Annie is a Black woman seeking employment. Together, they navigate the challenges of life, love, and ambition. The film takes an emotional turn when Annie's light-skinned daughter, Sarah Jane (Susan Kohner), struggles with her racial identity and rejects her Black heritage to pass as white.
The impact of “Imitation of Life” on my life stems from the examination of the racial dynamics and the consequences of denying your heritage. As an African-American female, I cannot imagine denying my heritage's richness. The film presents the racial inequalities and prejudices that were taking place in the 1950s and it remains relevant today. Reflecting on the struggles that took place for the characters, makes me realize how society can shape one's identity and the significance of embracing your true self. The character Sarah Jane's internal conflict of being torn between her racial identity and the desire to escape the harsh realities of racism was a powerful metaphor for the challenges that many individuals faced during that time. The film encourages its viewers to confront uncomfortable truths about race, identity, and the impact of discrimination, fostering a sense of empathy and understanding.
Beyond its exploration of racial dynamics, "Imitation of Life" delves into the complexities of motherhood and the sacrifices women make for their families. The character Lora Meredith's pursuit of a career in acting and her relationship with her daughter Susie raises questions about the balance between personal ambition and maternal responsibilities. This aspect of the film has prompted me to consider the choices I make as I pursue my goals and the impact these choices have on relationships with loved ones. As I watched the relationship unravel between the 2 characters, I was grateful to have a mom who has always put me before her career and ambitions.
Overall, “Imitation of Life” has had a lasting impact on my life by serving as an inspiration for self-reflection and fostering a deeper understanding of societal issues. It encouraged me to have more empathy, understanding, and acceptance in my interactions with others. It reminded me to stay true to myself, be genuine, and provide compassion and understanding that surpasses society’s expectations and prejudices. The storyline reminded me to appreciate the wonderful relationship I have with my mother. The film was a cinematic masterpiece that was entertaining but it challenged and enriched my outlook on the world and my place in it.
Hester Richardson Powell Memorial Service Scholarship
As I think about the personal challenge of resilience at the age of 17, what stands out in my mind is the loss of my grandmother and best friend in April of 2021. I had just become a freshman in high school and I was not able to focus on my studies or participate in any extracurricular activities. I was completely heartbroken and empty, I felt defeated because my prayers for her healing were ignored by God. My mom prayed for me a lot as she saw me truly struggling with the loss of my best friend. Although my heart was heavy, and my mind was not a peace, I pushed myself daily to finish the school year on a positive note with a 4.1 grade point average.
They will carry me through my next journeys in life, college, and then Medical School.
Because I have experienced such a deep loss, I have been able to inspire and encourage my classmates and friends. I have become the go-to person for my peers when they need comfort or just someone to talk to. Just the other day, one of my classmates who never really talked to me walked up to me as I was headed to class and said his grandmother passed. I gave my sincere condolences and asked if could I pray for him. I do my best to motivate them and provide the wisdom my granny shared with me.
In conclusion, as I embark on my new journey, and excited for the opportunity to meet new people and help others to persevere through difficult times. Your generous support will not only shape my future but also empower me to create a lasting impact on the world around me. I extend my heartfelt gratitude for considering my application and for the opportunity to pursue my ultimate dream of continuing my education.
Onward and Upward Scholarship
Ever since I was a little child, I have nurtured a dream deep within my heart—a dream of
becoming an OBGYN (Obstetrician and Gynecologist). This scholarship holds the key to
turning that dream into a beautiful reality. As a child, I would often play doctor with my
parents, but my desire to help people goes far beyond make-believe. I am particularly
passionate about extending healthcare to those who are often overlooked and
underrepresented. With the assistance of this Onward and Upward Scholarship, my journey
toward achieving this challenging goal will become slightly more attainable.
Becoming a physician who will focus on the reproductive health of women, I hope to make a positive impact on the world. It is imperative that we, as a community, rise to the occasion and become the catalysts for change in the field of medicine.
In addition to my passion for helping others, a college education will equip me with the necessary knowledge and skills to excel, particularly in terms of critical thinking. Harriett Russell Carr Memorial Scholarship
Daily, I do my very best to demonstrate excellence in everything, whether at school, at home, serving in the community, or when I am out with friends. I approach every task with a strong work ethic, compassion, and detail. I am a perfectionist, and I set high standards for myself to be consistent when representing my family and God.
One way I exemplify a spirit of excellence is by actively seeking opportunities where I can serve others. I am constantly helping other students and friends who may be experiencing difficulty in their subjects. When time allows, I tutor subjects in school such as English Literature and Science. I am elated when I hear back from my classmates that helping them to better understand the topic at hand helped them obtain better test scores. I am often called upon to pray at school and to assist my teachers with projects they may have for school events.
As it pertains to my community and giving back, I am on the Mission Ministry at my church and we give out food every third Saturday to people who have food insecurities in the surrounding areas. I actively volunteer my time and skills to initiatives that align with my values and have a positive impact. I work with multiple food banks with my school service campaign. I give approximately 10 hours a week to a few organizations like Must Ministries, Shady Grove Baptist Church, and First Presbyterian Church. I also volunteer at an after-school program for underprivileged children called Mission 1:27 Ridenour Adventure Center. I go there to read with, worship with, and build relationships with the kids in my community. Being around kids who are beating the odds and statistics to become excellent humans makes me want to go to college and continue to serve while in my respective career.
Additionally, I believe in being positive and being helpful. With so many negative things happening in the world today, there is a serious need for a positive outlook and offering support to those in need. Whether it's through service opportunities, personal relationships, or informal relationships. I enjoy helping others navigate their paths and achieve their goals.
In conclusion, my commitment to excellence is evident in the way I live life daily. I approach everything with a positive attitude and a spirit of gratitude. I get pleasure out of helping and giving back to others.
Cat Zingano Overcoming Loss Scholarship
I think it is a typical school morning; my mom is at the hospital with my grandma, and my dad wakes me up so I can start getting ready for the day, but as I sit up, I realize that the clock says 4:07 a.m., and it's pitch-black outside. My dad sat next to me and said, "She passed away," and those words shattered the rest of my freshman year. My best friend, the only person I could talk to without judgment, was gone, and I couldn't breathe. At the funeral, I can't even look at her in the casket. It's all a blur of hugs, tears, screams, and condolences. My pastor is giving the eulogy, and he speaks fervently about how she served God, adopted and took care of so many people. I am one of those people. We laughed and talked like best friends, and she imparted so much wisdom into me. This paper is about those lessons.
The first lesson she taught me while we made graham cracker chicken one summer afternoon was to trust God. I had to learn to trust God in all things and with all things. I began to include God in everything, even the things I think are trivial because He'll never leave nor forsake me. I demonstrate this value in my life by looking for Him in my schoolwork, leadership opportunities, and community service. Trusting and seeing God's plan in my life hasn't been anywhere near easy, but I understand that, ultimately, everything works for the good of those who love Him.
Secondly, while we watched one of her favorite Elvis Presley movies, she encouraged me to always treat people with love and respect because we don't know their circumstances. I had to understand that what I did to the least of these, I was ultimately doing unto God. This is so important because my community is a part of what makes me who I am. My peers and teachers at school, the children I work with at the Adventure Center, and my coworkers all influence me and are worthy of the same love and respect. The way I treat strangers matters; despite not knowing them, they are image bearers of God and deserve the same kindness as anyone else.
Lastly, during our evening talks at her bedside, my grandmother taught me to be strong and courageous, not letting the voices of others influence how I feel about myself or alter my values. She encouraged me to stand firm in my beliefs about myself and the world, not trying to blend in but to be different. Also, to not camouflage myself but instead stand out and make a difference. I apply this lesson, especially to how I view leadership, because of its importance, not just in my life but in others as well.
I carry the wisdom and the lessons learned from her passing, and I use them to grow into the young woman my grandmother would want me to be. I use them to motivate me to do the hard work it will take to be a doctor, not only to make my granny proud but to help black women who are overlooked and underrepresented in healthcare. I want to give the black women I serve the comfort of having a doctor who looks like them and assures them that they are heard and cared for. I desire to take every setback or challenge I face and learn from it so that I can use what I know to better myself. All these lessons from my grandma have shaped my worldview, and they will continue to in all my future endeavors.

I do realize the path to becoming an OBGYN is long, but crossing the finish line to obtain the title of Dr. Sydney Catron will be the epitome of success. Given the advancements in technology and the abundance of resources available in hospitals today, these racial disparities in healthcare are heart-wrenching. It is imperative that we, as a community, rise to the occasion and become the catalysts for change in the field of medicine.
The prospect of aligning my career with my passion fuels my motivation to become the best version of Myself and contribute to society as a productive citizen, even amid its chaos.

E.R.I.C.A. Scholarship
Ever since I was a little child, I have nurtured a dream deep within my heart—a dream of becoming an OBGYN (Obstetrician and Gynecologist). This scholarship holds the key to turning that dream into a beautiful reality. As a child, I would often play doctor with my parents, but my desire to help people goes far beyond mere make-believe. I am particularly passionate about extending healthcare to those who are often overlooked and underrepresented. With the assistance of this scholarship, my journey towards achieving this challenging goal will become slightly more attainable.
I envision college as a transformative experience, one that will prepare me intellectually and socially for my future career and adult life. As I approach my college years and continue to grow in knowledge, I eagerly anticipate the vast opportunities for learning and self-discovery. Science, in particular, captivates me, and I yearn to delve into the extensive realm of knowledge it offers, with a special focus on reproductive health. In my AP Biology class, we explore the concept of positive and negative feedback in cellular communication. Reasons To Be - In Memory of Jimmy Watts
My volunteer experiences have had a profound impact on my core values and life aspirations. Impacts that have led me to develop my leadership and communication skills, expand my cultural awareness, strengthen my community engagement, and clarify my career goals. One of the primary places I spend most of my time volunteering is at the Ridenour Adventure Center, which is an aftercare center for underprivileged youth. There, I have learned how to be an effective leader and how to communicate in a way that I am understood. I know that I can transfer these skills into my career path and I am encouraged that I can make a difference, no matter how small. I have also been able to use my Spanish-speaking skills to translate at food banks at local churches. Through this, I have been able to explore a culture that is not my own. I also have developed an appreciation for the Hispanic culture after being immersed in it through volunteering.
I have strengthened my community engagement through my volunteer work. After spending so much time working with local organizations, I have strong connections with not only the leaders of the organizations but also the people in the community who frequent them. Because of this, I have committed to social change. Also, while volunteering, I have been even more inspired to pursue my career goals. It has been my lifelong desire to be an OB/GYN (Obstetrician and Gynecologist), and after engaging with people in my community I have learned that the mortality rate during childbirth among minority women is overwhelmingly high. I am determined to make overcoming this challenge my career goal and it motivates me constantly to keep going. Lastly, volunteering has shown me the hardships and challenges that those in my community. I have since learned to empathize and have a deep sense of compassion for those that I hardly know. This compassion, alongside my career goals, has given me a strong desire to have a positive impact on the world. Not only through my career but through philanthropic efforts like donations or even fundraising efforts.
In conclusion, volunteer experiences have the power to shape an individual's core values and influence their career and life goals by instilling values of empathy, social responsibility, and community engagement. These experiences can also provide valuable skills and insights that guide individuals toward fulfilling and purpose-driven paths in their personal and professional lives.
McClendon Leadership Award
Leadership is a multifaceted concept that holds different meanings for different people, but at its core, it encompasses the ability to guide, inspire, and influence others to achieve common goals or objectives. To me, leadership represents a set of qualities, behaviors, and skills that enable individuals to take on roles of responsibility and authority in various contexts, whether in a professional setting, community, or personal relationships. Several key elements of leadership stand out to me. The first is vision; a leader should have a clear and compelling vision of the future, setting a direction that others can follow. This vision provides purpose and direction, guiding actions and decisions. Secondly, integrity is the foundation of effective leadership. Leaders must act with honesty, transparency, and ethical behavior. Their words and actions should align with their values, setting an example for others to follow. Next is empathy, leaders need to understand the needs, feelings, and perspectives of those they lead. Empathy helps build strong relationships, fosters teamwork, and enables leaders to make decisions that benefit the well-being of their team members. Next comes communication. Effective communication is vital for conveying the vision, goals, and expectations to the team. Listening is equally important, as it helps leaders understand concerns and gather input from their team. Adaptability is a large part of leadership as well. Effective leaders adapt to different situations and personalities, leveraging their strengths while recognizing and addressing their weaknesses. To continue, accountability is a necessity. Leaders should take responsibility for their decisions and actions, as well as the outcomes of their team. Lastly, I believe empowerment is crucial for healthy leadership. A strong leader empowers their team members, enabling them to take ownership of their work and develop their skills. This not only benefits the individual but also the organization.
Leadership is essential for achieving goals, problem-solving, innovation, and personal growth. Effective leadership helps groups and organizations work cohesively toward common objectives. Without leadership, efforts may become fragmented, leading to inefficiency and a lack of progress. Furthermore, leaders often face complex challenges. Their ability to make informed decisions, adapt to new circumstances, and guide their teams in problem-solving is crucial for overcoming obstacles. Next, leaders can encourage creativity and innovation within their teams. They provide the environment and support necessary for individuals to think outside the box and generate new ideas. Finally, Leadership opportunities can foster personal growth and development. As individuals take on leadership roles, they often acquire new skills, gain self-confidence, and become better communicators.
Leadership is dynamic and it involves guiding, inspiring, and influencing others to achieve common goals. It is important because it facilitates progress, fosters collaboration, and helps individuals and organizations reach their full potential. Effective leadership can have a positive and lasting impact on individuals, teams, and society.

Book Lovers Scholarship
I would have the world read Seven Days in June by Tia Williams. I think it is a love story that everyone can learn from. Not just the love aspect, but the overarching theme of the novel. In this book, we see two characters, Eva Mercy and Shane Hall reunite 15 years after they fell in love during a week in June. It's very realistic, and it shows how love transcends time. During the first week they spent together, they were bonded so tightly because they had never met their respective matches, until then. Both teens had vices and they understood each other to the point where they became each other’s vice. Then, at the end of those seven days, they were ripped apart with no explanation. They reunite at a Black author book conference where they both realize that the love they shared never left, it simply took on a different shape. This book also demonstrates just how history, past traumas and experiences do not define a person. Both characters in the novel experience so much heartache and pain as teenagers, but we see how despite the hardships they learn how to grow into healthy adults, first starting by cutting their vices of drugs and drinking. Both characters work to encourage the young people around them to not fall into the traps that society has set for them, the same traps that they fell into. Shane especially, because he makes an intentional effort to counsel children that attend different schools where he teaches.

I have decided to further my education so that I can accomplish a dream that I have had since I was very little. My dream of being an OBGYN (Obstetrician and Gynecologist) will become a reality if I were to receive this scholarship. As a child, I always wanted to play a doctor with my parents. I have a true desire to help people, especially those who are overlooked and underrepresented when it comes to healthcare. This scholarship will help me pay for college so that goal, despite how challenging it may be to achieve, will be slightly more attainable.
I hope that attending college prepares me both intellectually and socially for a career and my adult life. As I am approaching my college years and continue to grow in knowledge; I desire to learn more about science and the large breadth of knowledge that it entails; specifically, reproductive health. In AP Biology we are learning about positive and negative feedback in cellular communication. Childbirth and menstrual cycles are examples of positive feedback, where the response to the stimulus increases because of signals sent to encourage that response. Both of these examples, demonstrate that humans need positive feedback for a stimulus to increase, equivalently, more Black women have to become successful doctors so that younger Afro-American girls see that a job in the medical field is within reach. Representation matters, not only for the youth but for the other women under their care. According to the CDC, Black women are three times more likely to die while pregnant or during their first trimester, than their counterparts of other races. Given the technology and the resources that are available in hospitals today, this is heartbreaking. There should be no reason for these racial disparities in our modern-day healthcare systems. In order to bring change, my community has to step up to be the change that we want to see in the field of medicine.
Alongside helping people, a college education will provide me with the knowledge and ability to develop and hone in on skills like critical thinking, so that I will be better prepared for medical school. Attending college prepares me intellectually, socially and financially to become a productive citizen in society. Furthering my education after my undergraduate studies is crucial to my ultimate dream, and this scholarship will help me to take one step closer to my goals and aspirations.
