Bio

Studying biology has been an important step for me because it helped me understand how living organisms function, including anatomy and disease. This has increased my interest in animal health. I plan to transfer into a veterinary technology program to gain hands-on experience assisting with procedures, running lab tests, and caring for animals. This path combines my love for science with my passion for helping animals and brings me closer to becoming a vet tech. Working as a kennel tech leader on the night shift has been very rewarding. With four years of work experience and several years of volunteering with animals, I’ve learned a lot about animal behavior, patience, and responsibility. I help make sure the animals are safe and comfortable while also supporting my team. This leadership role has helped me grow in confidence and strengthened my passion for working with animals. I hope to use my experience as a future vet tech to continue studying animals. Volunteering at a shelter will give me more hands-on experience with animal care and behavior. In the future, I would like to work in a zoo or wildlife rehabilitation center helping care for animals and support their health.

    Learner Calculus Scholarship
Calculus is one of the most important branches of mathematics in the STEM field because it provides a powerful framework for understanding change, motion, and relationships between variables. At its core, calculus allows scientists, engineers, and researchers to model real-world phenomena with precision, making it an essential tool across disciplines such as physics, engineering, biology, chemistry, and even computer science. One of the primary reasons calculus is so important is its ability to describe change through derivatives. In many STEM fields, understanding how something changes over time is critical. For example, in physics, derivatives are used to calculate velocity and acceleration, which are fundamental to studying motion. Engineers rely on derivatives to analyze stress, optimize systems, and design structures that can withstand various forces. Without calculus, it would be extremely difficult to predict how systems behave under different conditions. In addition to derivatives, integrals—another key concept in calculus—allow for the calculation of accumulated quantities. This is especially important when dealing with areas, volumes, and total quantities that cannot be easily measured directly. For instance, in engineering, integrals are used to determine the amount of material needed for construction or the total energy consumed by a system. In biology and medicine, integrals can help model population growth or the spread of diseases over time. These applications demonstrate how calculus helps quantify and solve complex problems that would otherwise be impossible to approach. Calculus also plays a critical role in optimization, which is essential in nearly every STEM field. Optimization involves finding the best possible solution under given constraints, such as minimizing cost or maximizing efficiency. For example, businesses use calculus to determine the most efficient production levels, while engineers use it to design systems that perform optimally with minimal waste. In computer science, calculus is used in algorithms for machine learning, where models are trained to minimize error and improve performance. Another important aspect of calculus is its role in modeling and simulation. Many real-world systems are too complex to study through direct experimentation alone. Calculus allows scientists to create mathematical models that simulate these systems, enabling them to test hypotheses and make predictions. For example, climate scientists use calculus-based models to predict weather patterns and climate change, while physicists use it to understand the behavior of particles and forces at both large and small scales. Furthermore, calculus encourages critical thinking and problem-solving skills. It requires students to think logically, analyze patterns, and apply concepts to new situations. These skills are highly valuable in STEM careers, where professionals are often faced with complex and unfamiliar problems. By learning calculus, individuals develop a deeper understanding of how to approach and solve challenges systematically. In conclusion, calculus is essential in the STEM field because it provides the tools needed to understand and analyze change, optimize systems, and model complex phenomena. Its applications are vast and deeply integrated into many scientific and technological advancements. Without calculus, much of modern science and engineering would not be possible. As a result, it remains a foundational subject for anyone pursuing a career in STEM, offering both practical applications and valuable problem-solving skills that extend far beyond the classroom.
    Ella's Gift
When I was fifteen years old, my life changed in a way that I never could have imagined. What started as a persistent pain in my knee slowly turned into something much more serious, a severe bone infection that would alter the course of my teenage years. While most teenagers were focused on school, friendships, and discovering who they were, I was suddenly facing hospital stays, surgeries, and a future filled with uncertainty. The infection was aggressive and the pain was constant. There were nights when even the smallest movement felt unbearable, and days when exhaustion from the pain made it difficult to think about anything else. Doctors ran tests, monitored my condition, and spoke carefully about what might happen next. Eventually, I heard words that no fifteen-year-old is prepared to hear, there was a possibility that I might never be able to walk on my own again. Hearing that felt like the world had stopped. Walking is something most people never think about, but in that moment it felt like my entire future had been taken from me. I felt trapped in a body that no longer worked the way it should. I became overwhelmed with frustration, and a sense of hopelessness that I didn’t know how to process. I felt isolated and disconnected from the life I used to have. While everyone around me tried to remain hopeful, internally I felt like I was sinking. The emotional weight of that experience became so heavy that I began to harm myself as a way to release the pain I could not put into words. It was a dark and confusing time in my life, and one that I struggled to talk about openly. At the same time, I had been prescribed medications to manage the intense pain caused by the infection and the treatments that followed. In the beginning, those medications felt like relief. They dulled the physical pain in my knee and allowed me to rest when my body felt like it was breaking down. But slowly, something changed. The medications didn’t just ease the pain in my leg, they also numbed the emotional pain I was carrying. What started as necessary medical treatment gradually turned into something more complicated. As time passed, I began turning not only to prescriptions but also to CBD products and even over-the-counter medications. At first, I justified it as part of managing my pain and recovery. But the truth was deeper than that. I was trying to escape the sadness, the fear about my future, and the emotional trauma of being told my body might never function normally again. Addiction rarely begins with intention. It often begins with pain. For me, substances became a way to quiet thoughts that felt too overwhelming to face. The relief was temporary, but it was enough to keep me reaching for it again and again. Recovery did not come easily. It required honesty with myself about the ways I had been coping and the damage those choices were causing. I had to face the emotional wounds that had been buried beneath medication and avoidance. Slowly, I began learning healthier ways to manage stress and pain. Instead of trying to numb my feelings, I started working through them. During this process, something else happened that changed my perspective entirely, I began to regain strength in my leg! With time, physical therapy, and determination, I slowly started walking again. Each step felt like proof that the words I once feared so deeply did not have to define my future. My educational goals are now driven by a sense of purpose and gratitude. After facing physical and emotional challenges at such a young age, I understand how fragile life can be and how important it is to use opportunities for growth. Education represents stability, independence, and the chance to build a meaningful future. I want to pursue my studies with the determination that was forged during the hardest moments of my recovery. Recovery remains an ongoing commitment in my life. It is something that requires awareness, discipline, and support. My plan for maintaining recovery includes building healthy routines that strengthen both my mental and physical well-being. Exercise, structure, and mindfulness help me stay grounded, while strong support systems provide accountability and encouragement. Most importantly, I have learned to face challenges directly rather than escaping them. Life will always contain obstacles, but I now understand that true strength comes from confronting those obstacles with honesty and perseverance. Looking back, the fifteen-year-old sitting in that hospital room believed his life might be permanently limited by illness and pain. Instead, those experiences became the foundation for growth, resilience, and self-discovery. The journey through injury, depression, addiction, and recovery has been difficult, but it has also shaped the person I am becoming.

Hi there! I’m Stefani Olson, and I’m on a mission to achieve my educational goals. Studying biology has fueled my ambition to pursue veterinary medicine. I’m turning my love for animals into real-world skills that will make a difference not only in their lives, but in the lives of their owners as well. My passion for veterinary medicine comes from a lifelong connection with animals and a deep desire to protect their wellbeing. From a young age, I found myself instinctively caring for animals in need, whether it was helping an injured bird, volunteering at local shelters, or learning about different species out of curiosity and love. These experiences shaped my sense of responsibility toward animals and strengthened my belief that every animal deserves compassion and care. Pursuing veterinary medicine is not simply a career choice for me; it is a calling rooted in empathy, curiosity, and a commitment to making a difference. My major is biology, and it serves as the foundation for my goal of becoming a veterinarian. Through studying biology, I explore the scientific systems that allow animals to live and thrive. Courses in anatomy, physiology, microbiology, and genetics challenge me to think critically about how diseases develop and how treatments can restore health. Each concept I learn brings me closer to gaining the knowledge and skills needed to diagnose illnesses and improve the quality of life for animals. Animals play an incredibly important role in human lives. They are companions, sources of comfort, and often beloved members of the family. Seeing the powerful connection between people and their animals has inspired me to pursue a profession where I can help protect that bond. Veterinarians do more than treat illnesses; they restore hope to worried owners and provide animals with a second chance at healthy lives. I plan to make a positive impact in the animal world by becoming a veterinarian who not only treats illness but also advocates for animal wellbeing. My goal is to provide compassionate medical care while educating pet owners about preventative health, nutrition, and responsible animal care. Hello! My name is Stefani Im currently a biology major aiming towards studying Pre-Veterinary Medicine. Animal care and welfare are essential parts of conservation because protecting wildlife is not only about saving species, but also about caring for the individual animals that make up those populations. When animals receive proper nutrition, medical care, and safe environments, they are healthier and more capable of surviving and reproducing. These factors are especially important in conservation programs that focus on endangered or vulnerable species. By prioritizing animal welfare, conservationists can help strengthen populations and improve the chances that species will continue to exist in the wild. Many conservation efforts rely on places such as wildlife rehabilitation centers, zoos, and breeding programs to care for injured, orphaned, or endangered animals. These programs give animals the opportunity to recover and, when possible, return to their natural habitats. Proper care also helps animals maintain natural behaviors like hunting, foraging, and raising young. When animals are physically and mentally healthy, they have a much greater chance of successfully surviving after being released back into the wild. Because of this, strong animal care practices are a key part of effective conservation work. My passion for animals has shaped both my educational interests and my future career goals. I have always cared deeply about the well-being of animals and the protection of wildlife. This passion has motivated me to pursue a career where I can make a meaningful difference in the lives of animals while also contributing to conservation efforts. My career plan demonstrates my ambition and clear focus on working in the animal care field. I plan to begin my career as a veterinary technician so that I can gain hands-on experience in animal health and medical care.Working as a vet tech will allow me to develop important skills such as assisting with procedures, monitoring animal health, administering treatments, and supporting recovery. These experiences will provide me with the knowledge and practical training needed to work with a wide range of animals. I see this step as an important foundation that will help me move toward my long-term goal. My ultimate goal is to work in wildlife rehabilitation. Ive spent sometime volunteering at a local wildlife rehabilitation sanctuary and found where my heart belongs. In this field, I would help care for injured or orphaned wild animals and assist in preparing them for release back into their natural environments. Being able to help animals heal and return to the wild would be incredibly meaningful to me. It would also allow me to directly support conservation efforts by helping animals recover and giving them a second chance at survival. I am dedicated to building a career in wildlife and animal care, and I believe I have the potential to make a positive impact in the animal welfare community. With the right education and opportunities, I hope to use my skills and compassion to help protect wildlife and support conservation efforts for years to come.

Hey there! My name is Stefani Olson, and I am a dedicated Biology student committed to building a strong academic foundation for a future in veterinary medicine later down the road. My punk identity and the way I choose to present myself day to day has truly deeply shaped my journey with studying in STEM. For a long time, I felt like I was navigating completely different lives, one where I was full authentic myself, and another where I questioned whether I would be fully accepted and took seriously. In spaces that can sometimes feel "normal" or traditional, I became very aware of how different I might appear to others in labs and lectures. There were moments when I wondered if my identity would overshadow my intelligence or my dedication. For a long time I would try constantly try to dim myself down to be accepted, but recently I have come to the realization that my authenticity is not a weakness, but it is a crucial of my strength. The challenges I faced were often internal before they were external. I struggled with self-doubt, worrying whether I truly belonged in science or whether I would have to hide away parts of myself to be taken seriously while studying STEM degree. There were moments when I made myself pressured to conform, to be quieter, to blend in. Yet with each of those moments I forced myself to flourish and grow with presenting my true self. I learned how to be resilient, I learned how to advocate for myself, but most importantly, I learned that my passion for biology and animal health is just as valid and powerful as anyone else’s. Choosing to stay true to myself while continuing to pursue STEM has been one of the most empowering decisions of my life. Im so thankfully for pushing myself to realize that idea. Looking ahead, I want my presence in this field to mean something. I hope to contribute not only through my knowledge and skill, but through compassion and representation. I want others who feel different or underrepresented to see someone like them succeeding in science. My journey has taught me empathy, perseverance, and courage, these qualities that are just as important in STEM as technical expertise. I believe the future of science is stronger when it includes diverse identities and perspectives, and I am proud to be part of that change.
Dynamic Edge Women in STEM Scholarship
Hi there! I’m Stefani Olson, and I’m on a mission to achieve all my educational goals! Studying biology has fueled my ambition to study veterinary medicine. I'm turning my love for animals into real-world skills that will make a difference in not only their lives, but their owners lives too! Working at the dog boarding facility for the last almost four years has been more than just a job for me, it has been a place where I found direction and purpose as well as gaining a family. Over time, I started to see animal care in a deeper way, not just as day to day tasks, but as a responsibility and a commitment to give animals the best care possible. Being surrounded by someone who leads with both strength and compassion changed the way I viewed my future. I began to realize that my love for animals could grow into something lifelong and meaningful. As the owner of the facility, my boss leads with so much heart and dedication. She has been able to support her moms legacy and uphold small bunnies for decades. I would like to write one story where my boss has truly inspired me, but every single day her ambition to keep this business running and be able to not only care for the dogs, but support, help, and care for their families, as well as care for her staff has set the ideal pathway on how I should to continue to achieve all my goals. She holds herself to high standards and expects the same from those around her, but she also teaches with such great patience and understanding. Watching her advocate for the dogs and their families, with making well thought out decisions, and handle difficult situations with calm confidence truly inspired me. She showed me that working with animals isn’t just about loving them, it’s about constantly learning, improving, and striving to give them the best care possible. There were moments when she encouraged me to believe in myself more than I did. Through conversations, guidance, and simply leading by example, she helped me see that I was capable of more. She pushed me to think about my long-term goals and reminded me that if I wanted to grow in this field, education would be key. Because of her influence, I made the decision to pursue studying biology, knowing it would lay the foundation for a career in veterinary medicine. I will always be grateful for the impact she and her family has had on my life. They adopted me in and have impacted my life in more ways than I thought was possible. She didn’t just teach me how to work harder, she taught me how to dream bigger. Her belief and support in me gave me the courage to take the next step toward my education, and that decision has completely shaped the direction of my future. Because of her, I no longer see my goals as distant dreams, but as something I am actively working toward every day. She helped me understand that growth takes patience, discipline, and faith in yourself, even when things feel uncertain. Knowing that someone I respect so much believes in my potential has motivated me to push through challenges and stay committed to studying biology to later down the road study veterinary medicine. Her mentorship has become a constant reminder of why I started and who I want to become in the field of animal care.
