Bio

My name is Ruth Nayeli Sosa Maciel, and I am the first person in my family to attend college. Born and raised in Greeley, Colorado, my parents, Mexican immigrants, have been an incredible source of strength and inspiration. Despite facing numerous challenges, they have always upheld our Christian values and have supported my pursuit of higher education, even though it's not in law or medicine. Over the past year, my parents and I have faced several tragic family deaths shortly after my first year of college. At the time, I was uncertain about my future. However, art has always been my passion. I chose to attend UNCO because of its esteemed School of Art & Design and the vibrant artistic community it fosters. My major aligns with my career aspirations to become a professional artist and make a meaningful contribution to the art world. I am also pursuing a minor in Computer Science and a Certificate in Arts Entrepreneurship, to start my own business. These scholarships will allow me to continue pursuing my dreams, and I am committed to honing my craft and making a positive impact in the art community. These scholarships are tremendous opportunities to relieve financial burden and allow me to focus more on my academic pursuits and artistic growth as I continue to pursue my studies at the School of Art & Design at UNCO. BTS has undoubtedly been the most influential and impactful K-pop group in my life and global culture. Their music, messages, and commitment to positive change have resonated deeply with me and countless others. Their impact extends beyond just their music, and it's truly remarkable. First and foremost, BTS' music has a profound effect on me. Their discography spans various genres, and each song carries a meaningful message that speaks to different aspects of life, love, and personal growth. From uplifting anthems like "MIC Drop" to introspective tracks like "Spring Day," their music is diverse and relatable, often touching themes of self-love, mental health, and societal issues. Their authenticity and vulnerability in their music have become a source of comfort and inspiration for me during challenging times, making me feel understood and encouraged. "Pied Piper" is one of BTS's best songs due to its unique and thought-provoking lyrics, and captivating melodies, conveying the message about the balance between dedication to one's craft and the need for self-care. As an artist, this resonates with me. The song addresses the relationship between BTS and their fans, known as ARMY, and reflects on the impact of their music on both themselves and their listeners. Musically, "Pied Piper" is a vibrant and melodic track that seamlessly blends captivating vocals with an infectious beat. The catch chorus and rhythmic flow make it a joy to listen to, while the underlying message encourages self-reflection and a healthy balance between work and leisure. The lyrics metaphorically compare BTS to the Pied Piper from the folktale, acknowledging the addictive nature of their music and performances. Moreover, BTS' global cultural impact is undeniable. They have shattered numerous records, performed groundbreaking live concerts, and topped global music charts, all while singing predominantly in Korean. Their ability to connect with fans from diverse backgrounds regardless of language barriers is a testament to the universal power of music and empathy. Their philanthropy and activism have left an indelible mark on the world. Its captivating storyline and thrilling duels never fail to engross me, turning every rewatch into an exhilarating experience. One of the most compelling aspects of Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters is the intense and strategic nature of the duels. The battles are not merely about brute force, but also intellect, strategy, and clever utilization of various cards. Witnessing Yugi, Kaiba, and other duelists masterfully maneuver through the game's complexities is incredibly exciting. If money were not an issue, I would strive to implement significant changes in the world by providing better access to education and resources for underprivileged communities. I would establish educational programs and scholarships to empower individuals from diverse backgrounds to pursue their passions and achieve their full potential. Furthermore, my commitment extends to investing in projects that focus on environmental sustainability. I envision supporting and collaborating with organizations and initiatives that promote sustainable practices, conservation efforts, and renewable energy sources. I believe recycling is a crucial practice for preserving our environment, and I am passionate about raising awareness to encourage more people to recycle. One innovative idea I envision involves creating a smart sorting system that utilizes advanced technology such as artificial intelligence and machine learning to quickly and accurately identify different material types. This system would automatically separate recyclable items from non-recyclable ones and further sort the recyclables into their respective material group: plastics, glass, paper, and metal. It could further clean and sterilize them, ensuring each material can be properly processed for recycling. This technology would greatly streamline the recycling process, making it more efficient and reducing the risk of contamination. By implementing such a system, we can significantly increase the amount of recyclable materials recovered and reused, ultimately reducing the amount of waste in landfills and our oceans. In addition to implementing this technology in recycling facilities, I would also like to raise awareness about the importance of proper recycling and the potential impact of innovative sorting systems. Through educational initiatives, community outreach, and collaboration with local municipalities, I wish to inspire more people to participate in recycling efforts and emphasize the positive environmental outcomes of efficient recycling practices. I seek to use my artistic skills to advocate for positive change and contribute to this long-term project. Whether through visual storytelling, interactive experiences, or immersive designs, I am passionate about leveraging my creative abilities to raise awareness, inspire action, and foster empathy and understanding. These envisioned changes align with my career goal as an artist and designer because I firmly believe art and technology have the power to create meaningful and positive impacts in society. By promoting access to education and resources, I aim to play a pivotal role in cultivating the next generation of creative thinkers and innovators, empowering them to leverage their talents for the betterment of society. If I were to use one book title to describe myself, it would be “The Power of Now” by Eckhart Tolle. This book title describes living in the present moment and making the most of every opportunity. It also reflects my desire to focus on the present and create positive change today, rather than waiting for the perfect conditions.

My piece "Expressive Self-Portrait" holds a special place in my heart. It is a colored pencil drawing on 19" x 25" black Canson paper. The metaphoric subject represents my expressive self-portrait. The colored pencil against a black background brings the mysterious underwater world to life, capturing the ethereal glow and flowing body. The gentle curves and translucent forms portray a sense of elegance and fluidity, embodying an almost otherworldly femininity. The delicate, iridescent colors, and flowing, organic shapes infuse the artwork with a captivating sense of beauty. However, this beauty deludes the danger within the mesmerizing depths of the ocean. The subtle play of light and shadow creates an enchanting ambiance, evoking a sense of wonder and tranquility. Each jellyfish appears to gracefully glide through the depths, surrounded by the inky darkness, enhancing their aura of mystery. The countless nights I poured into this drawing, I was transported to a serene and enchanting underwater realm, sparking fascination and serenity. This drawing celebrates the mesmerizing allure of the deep ocean and its inhabitants. But, it also beautifully encapsulates the jellyfish's serene and graceful nature, adding depth and meaning to its captivating portrayal of my quiet and imaginative personality. Its evocative portrayal of the deep, dark oceanic atmosphere suggests a deep, mesmerizing, and mysterious aspect in the underwater world that is me and who I am that has yet to be fully explored.

As a first-generation art student, I am deeply committed to giving back to under-resourced communities, particularly youth, through my passion for visual arts. I recognize the transformative power of art and its ability to inspire, empower, and provide a platform for self-expression. With this in mind, I plan to contribute to under-resourced communities through various initiatives aimed at nurturing creativity, fostering self-confidence, and providing educational opportunities in the visual arts. To start with, once I’ve graduated and saved enough funds, I plan to open studio space for my art and also establish art workshops and mentorship programs in under-resourced schools and community centers. These workshops will be designed to provide young individuals with access to art supplies and art education to nurture their creativity and offer guidance and mentorship from experienced artists. The goal is to inspire and empower these young individuals to explore their artistic potential and express themselves through visual arts. By sharing my knowledge, skills, and experiences, I hope to contribute to their personal and artistic development. Furthermore, collaboration with local community organizations is crucial to my plan. I aim to work with these organizations to create public art installations that reflect the cultural heritage and stories of the communities. These collaborative projects will not only beautify the surroundings but also serve as a platform for community members, especially the youth, to actively participate in the creation of art that represents their identities and experiences. By involving the community in the artistic process, I seek to instill a sense of pride, ownership, and unity, while providing a platform for creative expression and storytelling. In addition to workshops and community-based projects, I envision developing a scholarship program for talented and passionate young artists from under-resourced communities. This program will aim to provide financial support, mentorship, and resources to help aspiring artists pursue formal training and higher education in the visual arts. By breaking down financial barriers and providing access to educational opportunities, I hope to empower these individuals to cultivate their talents and pursue careers in the arts, creating pathways for personal and community transformation through creativity. In summary, my motivations for giving back through visual arts are deeply rooted in my experience that lacked this kind of support when I was younger and the desire to create sustainable and impactful opportunities for young individuals who may not have had the same opportunities otherwise. I aspire to create a meaningful, lasting impact by providing access to education, mentorship, and resources. I aim to support their artistic aspirations, empower individuals, foster a sense of belonging and pride within their communities, contribute to their personal and professional growth, provide avenues for self-expression and personal growth, and ensure that the transformative power of visual arts reaches and enriches the lives of the youth in under-resourced communities. Through these initiatives, I aim to inspire and uplift the next generation of artists, storytellers, and creatives, contributing to the cultivation of vibrant and resilient communities through the arts.
Bayli Lake Memorial Scholarship for Creative Excellence
My creativity often flourishes in a quiet and peaceful environment, like being surrounded by nature or listening to music. Nature is art in itself. It reinterprets elements such as rocks, wood, and plants into sculptures. Tapping into my personal stories and experiences is a rich source of inspiration for my artwork. Exploring different art styles from various artists or shows I enjoy can ignite my creativity as I appreciate and learn from their techniques and expressions. I often feel most creative when I'm free to explore novel ideas and experiment without limitations. The act of creating art offers me a sense of catharsis and introspection. When I immerse myself in the creative process I find a space for self-discovery and healing. Art becomes a means of processing complex emotions, grappling with personal challenges, and celebrating moments of joy and resilience. This intimate connection between art and introspection imbues my work with authenticity and emotional resonance. As I continue to evolve as an artist, I aspire to explore innovative mediums and techniques, always seeking to push the boundaries of my creativity. Embracing experimentation and embracing the unknown are integral to my artistic growth. I believe that art can bridge gaps, spark meaningful conversations, and evoke profound emotions, and I am committed to harnessing that power through my creations. In addition to drawing from my personal experiences, I find inspiration in studying the techniques and perspectives of artists, enriching my creative process and broadening my artistic vision. I appreciate the interplay of culture, history, and individual expression in their art, and strive to infuse my work with the same depth and richness. My cultural background reflects on the resilient journeys of my parents, the challenges they faced, the triumphs they achieved, and the values they impacted me. I draw from their lives, weaving their stories into my visual narratives. By infusing my work with my lived experiences and identity, I strive to create art that resonates with others on a deeply human level. Incorporating my lived experiences and identities into my artwork is a deeply personal and meaningful process. Moreover, as a first-generation art student, I am aware of the intersectionality of my identity and the power it holds in shaping my creative voice. I incorporate elements of my cultural heritage, familial values, and personal struggles into my artwork. I aim to create work that is not only visually compelling but also emotionally resonant and thought-provoking. My art becomes a reflection of my life experiences and an invitation for others to connect, empathize, and find common ground through the universal language of visual storytelling.

My major aligns with my career aspirations to become a professional artist and make a meaningful contribution to the art world. I am also pursuing a minor in Computer Science and a Certificate in Arts Entrepreneurship, to start my own business. I am going to be completely transparent and honest. My motivation to continue my pursuit and passion in visual arts, design, etc is driven by the potential for financial success - aka the money. This is beyond selfishness because the money I hope to make is entirely my duty as a daughter to respond to the needs of my now elderly parents. The money is for my parents and no one else. Whether you want to acknowledge it, the world revolves around money. It is entirely possible to survive without it, however, it is not as easy. While I'm genuinely passionate about art and design, I recognize the opportunities for lucrative careers. The prospect of financial stability and even prosperity in the visual arts and design industry fuels my dedication and perseverance, driving me to produce high-quality work, build a strong portfolio, and network effectively to capitalize on the economic potential of my creativity and expertise. While financial stability is important, my “why,” on the other hand goes beyond monetary rewards. I am passionate about visual arts and design because it allows me to express myself creatively, communicate ideas, evoke emotions, and inspire change. That is primarily why I am not studying for a “quick buck” at a clinic or a law firm, sitting behind a desk all day because that is not who I want to be. The ability to create something beautiful, thought-provoking, and impactful drives me to continue honing my skills and pushing boundaries in the field. I find fulfillment in bringing visions to life and contributing to the aesthetic and functional aspects of the world around me. The sense of accomplishment from creating meaningful work and leaving a lasting impression on others motivates me to pursue my passion for visual arts and design. That potential for financial success is the world’s greatest gamble and I am going all in! Given the advancements in technology, such as artificial intelligence, digital art, and automatic script-writing tools, I am excited about the new possibilities they bring to storytelling and animation. My ultimate goal for the past year or so is, after I've graduated, to release a solo-directed and produced animated movie on YouTube. With the aid of digital art tools, I can now visualize and bring to life my goal with a level of detail, adding depth and richness to the visual storytelling aspect of my project. Additionally, automatic scriptwriting tools can serve as a source of inspiration and exploration as I delve into creating the plot and characters for my animated movie. While I may not know who the characters are, what the plot is about, or where it's taking place, these tools can help me navigate through potential storylines and character dynamics, sparking my imagination and leading me toward unexpected and exciting creative choices. As an art student, I acknowledge the importance of balancing technological advancements with the fundamental aspects of storytelling and creative expression. While these tools can streamline certain aspects of the creation process, I believe the spirit of creation and storytelling ultimately emanates from the human imagination and emotion. Therefore, I will continue to draw inspiration from personal experiences and observations, infusing my stories with authenticity and depth. Ultimately, the mystery and excitement of my ultimate goal only add to the thrilling journey of creation, allowing me to craft a project that is entirely my own.

Once upon a time in the vibrant and culturally rich land of Mexico, two individuals embarked on separate journeys that would later intertwine to form an inspiring tale of resilience, faith, and unwavering determination. Guadalupe, a strong and independent woman, made the courageous decision to cross the border illegally with her family to seek new opportunities in the United States after legally crossing for work. Meanwhile, Jorge had embarked on a risky journey by crossing the river to cross the border in pursuit of a better life, abandoning the life he had before. Guadalupe and Jorge faced the daunting task of assimilating into a new country while striving to provide for their families. Guadalupe, a single mother, took on the enormous responsibility of caring for her older son while struggling to make ends meet. Jorge worked countless minimum-wage jobs, battling his inner demons and the destructive taste of alcohol, which overshadowed his aspirations. While Guadalupe had given her life to the Lord in her Christian belief, Jorge had no connection to religion apart from the exposure to Catholicism in Mexico. That was until one day, Jorge was tired and desperately needed change. That led him to the same church Guadalupe attended. On that faithful day, Jorge was cleansed and purified of his sins as his inner demons left, taking away his yearning and dependency on alcohol for good as he was no longer tempted. Their fateful encounter blossomed into a deep and enduring love, leading to a beautiful union that weathered numerous trials and tribulations. Tragedy struck when they faced the heart-wrenching loss of a child before eventually welcoming a new life, filled with boundless love, hope, and unyielding determination - a child who would one day draw inspiration from their unwavering spirits. That child… is me! My mom and dad are the biggest source of inspiration and influence in my life. Their testimonies are fueled by the potent blend of their fierce worth ethics, indomitable faith, and determination. Inspired by their journey, I sought to become the first in my family to pursue higher education and graduate with a degree. Their legacy of resilience and perseverance became the cornerstone of my ambition, serving as a guiding light on the path to achieving newfound aspirations, bridging their past struggle with the promise of a brighter future. As an artist, I aim to use my artistic skills to explore the intersections of art and technology, utilizing digital mediums and new tools to create immersive and interactive experiences. My interests involve storytelling, animation, and game design. Through my academic success and collaboration with professionals from diverse backgrounds, I wish to contribute to innovative projects in virtual reality, user interface design, and media production. Additionally, I aspire to use my artistic skills to address social issues, communicating powerful messages through visual storytelling and public art installations. Ultimately, I see my abilities as a means to push boundaries, inspire change, and contribute to innovative solutions in the world. What sets my artistic gift apart is my unique perspective and approach to creating art. Creativity is a deeply personal expression of one’s inner world, and my artwork reflects my individual experience, emotions, and imagination. I constantly strive to push the boundaries of traditional artistic techniques and embrace experimentation. Additionally, my commitment to continuous improvement and growth as an artist ensures that my style and skill set continue to evolve, making my creative output dynamic and diverse.

The everyday, mundane yet beautiful parts of daily life, around me serve as a constant source of inspiration as an artist. The simplest aspects of daily life spark my creativity and provide a foundation for my artwork. For instance, people, nature, landscapes, and technology influence my creative process. I find aspiration in the small details, the way light falls on objects, the expressions on people’s faces, and the rhythm of city life. The human experience and emotions are significant. Observing the diverse range of human interactions, expressions, and struggles in the world around me often fuels my artistic endeavors. These observations frequently find their way into my artwork, whether through the portrayal of human figures or the narratives in my pieces. Additionally, the natural world provides an endless array of inspiration. The intricate forms of flora and fauna, the mesmerizing play of light and shadow in outdoor settings, and the compelling rhythms of the natural environment all inform my creative process. These elements frequently appear in my art, whether interpreted figuratively or abstractly. These elements of the everyday world around me often influence color schemes, composition, and themes, acting as a wellspring of creativity, and shaping and informing my artistic expression. From people to the wonders of nature, I find constant inspiration that permeates and enriches my art.

    Godi Arts Scholarship
My journey in the arts started ever since I can remember, from drawing colored blobs of barely distinctive figures and objects to impressionable characters and 2-D/3-D modeling in digital media within the past year. In Elementary school, I joined an Art Club. I would work on various activities and projects an hour before school started and present them to the students and faculty. I decided to enroll in an art class in Junior High School. However, the teacher was strict and limited our ability to express creativity. Forced to do nothing but watercolors on parchment and poorly made clay bowls, I hated studio art by the day as much as I used to. For that, I stopped and decided to pursue music by joining Band. I played first-chair clarinet for three consecutive years and earned awards for my participation, prowess, and skill. For the first year in High School, I took a break from all arts. That's when I saw how much I loved and missed art and actively creating and doing physical work with my hands, drawing for my friends, or performing a piece on stage for an audience. The only difference is that I pursued music more than art in High School. I joined Advanced Jazz Band an hour before school started. I joined Wind Ensemble (a level higher than Concert Band) and performed alongside the Orchestra. I joined Marching Band after school, training and practicing at least four hours a day in the fields not only during the fall when school started but the prior summer before the school year. I also became a High Woodwind Leader during the Covid-19 pandemic when the number of members dropped significantly from around 60+ students to only about 20. I earned a Letter in Music and other awards for the work I had put forward to ensure our performances were the best they could be. After High School graduation, I feared pursuing a bachelor's in Art & Design: Studio Art to reignite my passion for drawing and evolving my skills towards Digital Media with the world advancing with technology, including Graphic Design. I was scared about not having my parent's full support. I knew they expected a lot from me as a first-generation Latina student. They wanted me to study law or medicine/nursing. The University I enrolled in allowed me an entire year or 40 credit hours worth of Exploring Arts to "explore" what I want to study for the next three years. I took various Art History classes as they were available to any student who is or is not in the Performing/Visual Art Program and filled my Liberal Arts Core credits. I learned a lot about art in those courses and expressed my desire to earn my first Degree in Art to my parents. They say it's okay, but I know they aren't impressed. If I can complete my degree and start an internship before graduation, I can begin a linear pathway for a bright future as a full-time artist/graphic designer. I can prove to anyone who isn't confident in their career choices that it's okay because confidence isn't about being perfect or having all the answers; it's about believing in yourself and your abilities, even when things get tough. If I could give any advice to college graduates struggling to find their place in the world, it would be to trust themselves and their instincts. Don't be afraid to take risks and pursue your passions, even if it means making mistakes. With confidence and determination, anything is possible.

From a low-income family (one working parent earning minimum wage), I want to study and work hard to make my parents proud and to give back for all the years they've raised me to be who I am today, striving to reach my goals. My parents never got much from their education. My mom had to drop out of primary school to work full-time for her single mom and younger siblings. My dad had to drop out of secondary school to work full-time for his single mom and younger siblings. My brother got his high school diploma after he came to the U.S. with my mom when he was ten. He was held back a year and had to finish his credits during the summer. As a first-generation student, there is a lot of pressure on my shoulders, especially since I graduated high school with a 3.89 GPA. But, I know that no matter what I study for my bachelor's degree, my parents will be proud of me. I may not currently be looking to become a doctor or a lawyer. Still, so long as I'm capable of maintaining myself with enough left over to sustain myself and my family by doing what I love for a living, that is good for me. I’ve been drawing since preschool and am self-taught. I learn everything I know about drawing either on my own or by watching short tutorial videos online. A few years ago, during my junior year of high school, I took a college-level animation class on-campus at my city’s local community college. We had large Mac computers and a beautiful Wacom Cintiq 16 for our work. When COVID came, our in-person school life became online, and my dad bought me an old laptop and a cheap on-sale Wacom Intuos Pro so that I may be able to finish my final animation project before school was over. I averaged a B+ in that class. People say you don’t need fancy, expensive pencils, markers, brushes, etc., to make good art. I agree. Art, in general, indeed becomes better quality with better equipment, but you can make beautiful things out of nothing. It is incredible how digital art has evolved over the years. You have more colors, brushes, and tools to help you be imaginative and create something beautiful within your limited space and budget. I’ve been attracted to semi-realistic art and wish to achieve that type of art style. The obvious thing would be to practice, right? Practice is repeatedly doing something to perfect the outcome you’re looking for I don’t practice. Art comes naturally to me. I can watch one video, study every component, and draw and have the same result without much work. That’s the beauty in my talent. It’s special and unique to me. I'd love to become a self-employed/freelance artist. To grow my art in Animation and Digital Illustrations on different media platforms such as Youtube and Twitch will be a dream come true. I can connect with people who are just like me and contribute to philanthropy and charities for great causes and other projects like other great Youtubers and Twitch streamers do.

Everyone constantly reminds me to speak up. My voice is soft, and I find discomfort in talking. As a baby, I never babbled. It concerned my parents. They took me to a hospital, and the doctor said I was just unsocial. They prescribed me a school far away from home during the spring. Soon, at the age of three, I was cured. My primary school teachers thought my quiet nature and shyness were signs of a disability or a disorder. It always confused me why I was pulled out of class, learning how to count when I should be learning how to write structured paragraphs. I took this as a sign and began to speak up and be more expressive. Soon enough, everyone knew my name. I was not popular. I was just Ruth: the quiet girl. In junior high, I felt uncomfortable with public speaking and avoided class presentations, debates, or anything that would put me in the spotlight. But, I remembered signing up for band class back during junior high registration to be a musician like my big brother, someone I looked up to at the time. I enjoyed learning how to play the clarinet and practicing music at home. It was until my first concert. I remember how nervous I felt. I could not stop shaking to the point I wanted to cry, having a minor panic attack. Even though I was seated in the second row towards the middle, where no one would see me, it was incredibly uncomfortable. My nerves got the best of me, and I was disappointed in my performance later that night when my parents drove me home afterward. Even so, I never gave up. Instead of seeing my fear as a roadblock, I saw it as an opportunity. I shined as concertmaster in junior high and high school and joined the marching band. I became the section leader for high woodwinds in my high school’s marching band in 2020 amid the pandemic. Our show was “Fall of Corona,” and we performed various Star Wars arrangements. As a leader, I learned to speak up and communicate with everyone – band mates, captains, drum majors, and our band director. I also joined clubs and volunteered outside of school in public spaces. I still suffer from shyness and quietness, but I know when to step up if I have to. I still feel anxious and scared, but that is how I know I am being brave. The words brave and courage are interchangeable, but they are not the same. Bravery comes with a lack of fear, and courage means taking action despite your fears. Fears can come from anything, anywhere, and at any time. Fear can be healthy or unhealthy. Overall, it prevents many of us from pursuing opportunities to grow personally, professionally, and emotionally. That is why we take risks. Risks are a part of thriving and pursuing long-term goals or living with passion and purpose. Success is virtually impossible without taking any risks.

I plan to study at the University of Northern Colorado, and my major is undecided. However, I'm thinking of getting a bachelor's degree in Studio Art concentration in digital media with multiple minors: Criminology & Criminal Justice and Computer Science as back-ups and reassurances. While on my journey toward this degree, I'd love to start a Youtube Channel and stream my art on many platforms to grow recognition and make my dreams come true. I'd love to be a self-employed/freelance artist.
    Healthy Eating Scholarship
A healthy lifestyle is essential for everyone. Nowadays, many people are stuck with the idea of getting the perfect slim body, often influenced by media and magazines. There is no “perfect weight,” and you do not have to look like a model to feel good about yourself. Physical fitness is not the sole basis of being healthy. Being healthy also means being mentally and emotionally fit. It should be a part of our overall lifestyle. The many benefits of healthy living include uplifting moods for a better psyche and a lower risk of developing health problems. That will increase your life expectancy simply because living a healthy lifestyle can help prevent chronic diseases and long-term illnesses and take care of your self-esteem and self-image. With better life expectantly you will have a more renowned appearance, glowing skin and hair, looking fitter and firmer. Eliminating junk food can influence your skin. Cutting bad food can clear your skin, reduce blemishes and spots and deliver smoother and shinier skin. Eating healthy food and taking care of ourselves add to our overall health and well-being, increasing energy. Maintaining a healthy and fit body gives a better quality lifestyle and boosts your self-esteem and confidence. How often do you see someone happy and aspire to be like them? When you are full of life and excitement, other people will see you as their role model and be inspired to take care of themselves too. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle is not that difficult, nor does it require work. It’s by doing what is fitting for your body by participating in a regular exercise routine, becoming conscious of your diet, engaging in the things you are passionate about, and surrounding yourself with positive energy. Like many adolescents and young adults, I struggle with acne, the most common skin condition. Because of this, I need to be cautious about washing my face regularly and other factors such as my diet and activity. My parents had the habit of buying me junk food and street food whenever I wanted. For the past year, I have been cooking homemade meals for my family and myself with fresh ingredients grown from my backyard. The difference in taste is enormous! Healthy living means maintaining a balanced lifestyle and introducing little healthy changes daily into our habits to improve our health, appearance, activity, and energy. A first step is to identify less healthy habits and to learn new, positive ones to replace them. These are a few minor changes I have integrated into my life. I feel better than I ever did.

Pets are scientifically proven to improve heart health by reducing stress, lowering blood pressure by approximately 10%, and lowering cholesterol. According to the Human Animal Bond Research Institute and Mars Petcare, market research reinforces the social bond between humans and pets. A survey from the same institute indicates that 74% of pet owners report improved mental health. Certified therapy animals help many, from guide dogs for the visually impaired to emotional support dogs for children with autism. Popular pet programs also bring lovable, furry creatures to hospitals, nursing homes, and senior centers to interact with patients and residents to brighten their days. But, it does not take special training for the rest of us to reap the benefits of a pet. Pets are known to give unconditional love, loyalty, and companionship in return for a warm, self, sheltered place to love along with adequate food, water, and exercise. They reduce loneliness and offer emotional and physical support, especially to those vulnerable or have special needs that certain breeds can give. They are lifesavers for those that struggle with depression, anxiety, and grief, giving one a sense of responsibility and a reason to get out of bed each morning. Having a pet requires a routine that helps build healthy habits. Domestic animals, sometimes wild animals, can distinguish their owners' moods and act accordingly. Pets increase social interactions, improving happiness and contentment, which impacts overall wellness. Dogs are more high maintenance and bring many different health benefits. Meanwhile, cats, rabbits, and gerbils are easy to look after, need a little exercise, and give our lives new meaning and purpose. Overall, pets change our lives for the better. On June 24th, 2019, as the pandemic exponentially grew, we welcomed a new member of our family. A year-old Coton de Tulear puppy. We named her Chispita. It means spark or sparklet in Spanish. Chispita, quite literally, put a spark in our life. She took out our mundane and depressing lives into fun and healthy ones. Life beforehand was bland. When I was younger, I would go to school during the day and study until night. My mom was home full-time cooking, cleaning, and taking care of me, and my dad worked from 6 pm to 6 am in an agricultural refried bean factory. He would also take up night and graveyard shifts on multiple occasions. We were not a big family nor the type to have dinner together or play board games on rainy days. We were dirt poor, and my dad had to borrow money from his friends and coworkers. As the years passed, our lives did not look to get any exciting. I didn't have friends and asked my parents for a pet. A furry friend to give me company at home since we do not travel or have much free time outside. They did not think we would be able to maintain a dog or cat for their energy or constant need for attention. Exotic pets are more costly and require specific care to stay healthy and happy. My first pet was an old English spot rabbit. She was in a box with holes taken directly from the wild. I called her Bunny. As one would expect, she gained extreme stress and trauma, but I took good care of her. She lived a lot of good long years as a domesticated animal. She died of a horrendous infection. Beforehand, I got a second rabbit from a school friend who lived in a no-pet apartment complex. She gave me her albino bunny named Buster. He also lived many good long years but ultimately passed from eye cancer. When I entered high school, my dad suffered an accident at work with a horrible injury that obscured his capability to do everyday things. He had to resign for medical reasons with no consistent income, minus the $300 monthly check from the law firm that helped his case that we were on the edge of losing our home. Before the virus came to the USA, my dad showed interest in getting a pet to liven our dull and depressing lives. My mom ignored him, thinking he was not serious until he began searching for puppies on sale. I helped him research dog breeds and their characteristics to find one suitable for our type of family. My dad suggested finding a dog that is small and stays small forever. We visited many shelters and places where they had adoption programs, and we were not satisfied in making a final decision. My dad told another church friend about our search. Not even a week later, our church friend came with our Colon de Tulear, and we fell in love with her. My mom broke out of her shell since Chispita became attached to her. The way my mom smiled brightly was the first time in so long she did that. My parents and I grew happier each day she stayed with us. As the pandemic forced every family to isolate and spend days on end at home, Chispita made it so much better. Even though my parents and I rarely go out, I knew it would have been more challenging to be stuck inside during those difficult times. My dad struggles with high blood pressure, high cholesterol, anxiety, and stress. After Chispita came, my mom and I saw improvements in his health. We named her Chipsita for a reason. Chispita is our “chispa” in life.

On November 1, 2017, BTS (Bangtan Boys) collaborated with the Korean and Japanese branches of the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) to help children and teens exposed to violence pursue their life safely and happily by making the world a better place through music. The [ongoing] LOVE MYSELF campaign and the Speak Yourself speech had a positive influence and high response, accumulating over 4,500,000,000 funds (KRW) as of August 2021. In large part, waking up every day motivates me to live my life to the fullest day-by-day as they come. God blesses me with life that I shall live it. In a small part, my parents motivate me to achieve my goals. They’ve helped me by giving me life advice daily like finance and organization. I’m a first-generation Latina, meaning I’m the first in my family to pursue higher education. The fact puts a tremendous amount of pressure and weight on my shoulders. I never want to disappoint them. They live in constant fear 24/7 after the uprising of deportation over the past few years, having migrated from Mexico in the mid and late 1980s. Once I’m 21, I’ll be able to begin the process and document them as U.S. citizens (I’m turning 19 next month). I want to prove to them that, as their last hope, I can make their wishes a reality and accomplish my dream while living a fulfilling life. Having my parents look up to me gives me a sense of reassurance, knowing they’ve got my back and will support me no matter what. They motivate me to be better, faster, stronger, determined and reach the stars. My parents are in the limelight of my life. I can’t see myself doing anything without them. As sad as it may seem, one day, I’ll have to find my independence and strength once they are gone. However, I’d be happy to know that I’ve made them proud.

I contemplated whether to buy a 100-pack of wide plastic straws or a pair of metal straws from Amazon. Ultimately, I purchased the metal straws. Metal straws (especially those of stainless steel) are reusable, safe and durable, portable, easy to clean, and eco-friendly. It makes them an affordable alternative to single-use plastic straws. Plastic is from non-renewable fossil fuels like petroleum or crude oil. Nearly 390 million plastic straws are used daily in the United States alone. Since this type of plastic is non-recyclable, it often ends up sitting in landfills with other types of waste. Every time you order a drink with a single-use straw, you are adding additional plastic waste into an already polluted environment. Plus, plastic takes 1,000 years to decompose. Toxic chemicals and fumes are released; many harmful by-products pollute the land, air, and water. Governments spend large amounts of money to clear landfills and dispose of plastic items. Improper disposal means it can end up in a lake or ocean, causing devastating effects on ecosystems and marine life such as birds or sea turtles, who can mistake plastic for food. As a result, they end up receiving more devastating injuries. With plastic pollution growing yearly, avoiding plastic is nearly impossible for marine animals. We can reduce our plastic waste output by replacing waste in our day-to-day life like plastic toothbrushes and straws. Although this is not the complete solution to the problem, it is a small step forward. The simple switch from single-use plastic straws to metal straws helps protect the environment and is a gateway to other alternatives for eco-friendly living.

I’m a simple girl. I like simple things. The most simple piece of jewelry in the world is an earring. I’ve worn earrings since my parents took me to the mall to pierce my ears when I was three years old. During the Baroque Period, paintings involved a lot of high contrast and dramatic lighting, known as chiaroscuro. Johannes Vermeer painted a tronie called the “Girl with a Pearl Earring,” also known as the “Mona Lisa of the North.” Why paint her? In the 17th century, the Netherlands turned against aristocracy and the Catholic church leaving many cities unsupervised by kings or bishops, so many artists were left without traditional patrons. The Dutch East India Company’s economic innovation created the merchant class that replaced nobility and religious figures. The anonymous girl’s turban emphasizes the worldliness of the merchant class with the exaggeration of the pearl, a symbol of wealth. Johannes Vermeer depicted a paltry number of paintings. The “Girl with a Pearl Earring” allows viewers to engage with her as a psychological subject rather than a theatrical narrative scene. Her gaze and parted lips are alluring. At the time, Johannes Vermeer’s art was not famous until less than two hundred years after his death when a French painter-critic published listed a description in 1866. The “Girl with a Pearl Earring” became one of Vermeer’s most famous pieces in the 21st century. Like art today, it takes time for people to recognize and appreciate a piece of art from millions through the multitude of media accessible to everyone. I am inspired to create art that depicts the same captivity as the “Girl with a Pearl Earring,” even if it takes a million years for someone to see it. Art is my passion.
    Bold Financial Literacy Scholarship
My dad taught me how to save and spend money efficiently at a young age, and today, whenever we go grocery shopping, thrift store shopping, etc. Everything he taught me, he taught himself through hard work, learning from his mistakes, and facing failures. The most helpful financial advice he has given me is to pay your bill or other payments at least a week before it’s due. My mom has the habit of telling my dad to pay the bills the day they are due. My dad gets annoyed, considering he never knows if he has enough money that week in hand to pay them all off. Starring at his wallet, he contemplates how to divide the money so we can continue to have our home, utilities, and food. It hasn’t been easy since my dad recently has gotten ill. We spent an entire week isolated, rarely going out, since the three of us got high fevers, sore throats, and harsh coughs. He gets paid minimum wage in an agricultural job with mushrooms, so that’s about $600 that we couldn’t spend on the mortgage, bills, or grocery shopping. By paying a week before the due date, you can assure it’s done and won’t need to spend so much time worrying over it. Most payments have late fees, so you can always be sure it’s never late. Also, most bill payments are processed online. That requires a lot of sensitive information relating to your name and bank account numbers. Most cards finish processing payments in 1-3 business days on average. If you were to pay on the date the payment is due, you’re not going to know if it will be processed that same day or a week later and get penalized with a late fee.
    Bold Great Books Scholarship
The Pearl Novella by John Steinbeck 1 Timothy 6:10 “For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.” The Pearl is a parable about a Mexican-Indian pearl diver named Kino. One day, he finds a substantial pearl and transforms by the evil it attracts. As a part of the minority, at first glance, the pearl symbolized great hope and fortune. Kino saw the pearl as a gateway to a better life. However, everyone – including a priest, a doctor, and businessmen – pursue him for it. Kino’s wife Juana and baby Coyotito face the brutal consequences of his greed and ambition under possessing the pearl. An inspirational book's primary purpose is to depict an example of change in a main character’s life to inspire readers to make such changes in their own life. They create optimism toward a more positive outlook in life. The Pearl doesn’t have a happy ending. The moral is to be content with what you have. “The grass is always greener on the other side” – a proverb in which people revolve around possessions and the need to have more than others, whether it’s a greener lawn or expensive accessories. My family and I don’t follow this mindset. My father works in agriculture right now, earning the minimum wage. We live in a big house with a big fence. On the other hand, my friends have both parents working high-income jobs. They live in a small house with a small yard. But, they have the car of the year, the latest phones, watches, etc. I don’t need any of that. Because what I have is good. It’s good enough for me.

    Bold Creativity Scholarship
Many of us, myself included, thought that creativity or being creative was only uniquely gifted to people to have the capability of using one’s imagination to create an original idea, especially in art. As an artist, I try to make my surroundings beautiful. But anyone can be creative. Creativity expands our perceptions. Being creative can not only generate ideas but come up with alternatives or possibilities in problem-solving, communication, entertainment, etc. Everyone is born with creativity, but we struggle to find and use it when needed. I’m a daydreamer. I daydream at home, in the car, at school, inside or out. I’d daydream about what-ifs and how scenarios would play in my head if I were to do something or how things would be different if I said or did something else at the time. I’d imagine them and write them down since I love writing stories in my free time. I’d never thought of becoming a freelancing author, but it’s just something I found enjoyable after my AP Language & Composition teacher had us create a journal for observation entries. In our journal, we had to write at least ten entries each semester about anything we’ve observed, remembered, or recorded. He described it as painting a vivid picture and feeling in your head when you read it. Something that when you look back and read it five years later, you can see and feel what you saw and felt long ago. It was a lot of fun. The more time I spend seeing and listening and wondering, I find it easier to get creative on the spot and become better at writing and art. One day, I’d like to share my creativity with others and collaborate to make something beautiful.
    Bold Generosity Matters Scholarship
When I was younger, my dad would hold my hand tightly as he would ask his co-workers or close family friend to lend him some money. Just how he clasped my hand, I knew he didn’t like asking for favors or feeling helpless in dire situations of not paying off our mortgage, bills, or food that week. They always offered whatever amount they could. My dad always paid it back as soon as possible. Even before I was born, my older brother caused nothing but trouble for my mom. We know he feels a sense of shame. The first person he calls for help is his lawyer and my aunt or cousins. Whenever my mom picks up the phone, I’m scared they’ll say he’s dead. Without realizing it, my friends have given me their time and presence to give me a sense of security and hope for my brother’s wellbeing. Generosity is defined as “the virtue of giving good things to others freely and abundantly” by the University of Notre Dame’s Science of Generosity Project. Generosity is giving “good things,” giving “freely,” and giving “abundantly.” Does this mean I have to gift my friends, family, and those who need it a gift with a kind heart abundant with love and compassion? Yes and no. It’s my choice. And theirs. We can give not only toys, blankets, or food but also our time, talents, and presence. But, it’s important to remember to respect and humility as equals in the relationship of giver and receiver. Acts of kindness are also gestures of generosity, not just offering something to someone.
    Bold Nature Matters Scholarship
I love food; nature feeds me. The most basic necessity that nature provides us abundantly is food. Food is a way to rebuild our physical and mental strength and is a way to socialize through a multitude of different cultures and languages. I grew vegetables and fruit trees in my backyard over the last few years throughout the pandemic when grocery stores and food shops were closed and shut down to prevent it from spreading. You can’t compare the freshly picked homegrown foods to those we buy in stores in bulk or packaged. I love to relax; nature brings me inner peace. Walking up early to see the sunrise, taking the time to walk my dog in the park, and staying out late to star gaze, these moments of natural beauty give me the inner peace that we strive for in our busy lives. I don’t need to meditate or use mindful practices. Nature provides me with a peaceful state of mind that I resonate with to feel better and clear my mind whenever I feel anxious or uncertain. I love art; nature boosts my creativity. Humans, from scientists and philosophers to artists and social leaders, wander looking for those special moments of clarity when inspiration hits the heights of creativity and innovation and brings insight into how we see the world. It’s also a way we understand life. As an artist, I struggle a lot with art blocks. Nature provides me with a massive influx of new ideas. It’s a source of never-ending wisdom, inspiration, and creativity outside our electronic life. Photographers capture the beauty in nature to share with the world so that we may have the same feeling of enlightenment. In my spare time, I also photograph and draw Nature to express its beauty to the world.
    Bold Goals Scholarship
No matter what anyone says, I never liked the way I look. When I was a little girl, I was overweight and considered ugly, constantly bullied and picked on for my short and stout figure. I became extremely insecure about my skin that I wore anything to cover as much of it, at home or in public. The world prides itself on standards, especially in beauty and fashion, evolving trends for consumers to follow to lead a prosperous lifestyle. However, individuals, especially women, face many consequences due to the gap between realistic and ideal expectations. We see those with fair skin, shiny hair, symmetrical faces, and perfect body proportions perceived as healthier, wealthier, more socially dominant, and more trustworthy. However, as a result, those who pursue the dangerously unattainable beauty standards result in lowered self-esteem, increased depression, excessive dieting, and eating disorders. So far, they’ve become less strict with the LGBTQIA+ community growing every day in which various individuals unite in social movements to celebrate pride, diversity, individuality, and sexuality. Lately, I’m slowly learning to love myself through my [own] standards instead of following somebody else's. My goal for the future is to encourage others to do the same no matter their age, gender, sexuality, etc. Everyone has the right to believe what they think is acceptable, whether it be beauty or education. Many parents see the classroom as a competition to see which of their kids can dominate at the top. They want their children to become doctors and lawyers, jobs of high pay and status. The children should have the choice to say and do what they want. Our parents should support and consult us, not control or lead our lives. No one should be afraid. Not anymore.
    Bold Fuel Your Life Scholarship
In large part, waking up every day motivates me to live my life to the fullest day-by-day as they come. God blesses me with life that I shall live it. In a small part, my parents motivate me to achieve my goals. They’ve helped me by giving me life advice daily like finance and organization. I’m a first-generation Latina, meaning I’m the first in my family to go to college.
    Bold Meaning of Life Scholarship
The meaning of life is to find a coherent significant purpose. When someone asks, “What’s the meaning of life?” there is the belief that things happen in our lives for a reason and has inherent value with the existence of goals and aims that we were born to do. My meaning in life is to find love. It may sound cheesy and dumb, but I’ve always dreamt that I would find my “prince charming” or “knight in shining armor.” Disney’s renaissance films had me wishing on stars and swooning for that special someone to sweep me off my feet and be there by my side. Spanish is the spoken language in my home. My parents would call prince charming “el príncipe azul,” which translates to “the blue prince,” also known as the perfect man. To find my “prince charming” – whether it be someone who loves me romantically or platonically – I want to love myself to understand what love is. To feel that sense of security and joy whenever I’m with them. I know that “prince charming” doesn’t exist because no one is perfect. Also, my expectations are exceedingly high, but it’s normal to want the best for yourself. In love, like in life, there needs to be balance. I’d have to find a way to incorporate my search for “prince charming” into my studies and work. Instead of asking what the meaning of life is, it’s better to ask what is our life’s purpose. That way, we can find it ourselves on not dwell if there are specific requirements or requisites to having the meaning of life answered.
    Bold Hobbies Scholarship
My favorite hobby and talent is art. I’ve been drawing since preschool and am self-taught. A few years ago, during my junior year of high school, I took a college-level animation class on-campus at my city’s local community college. We had large Mac computers and a beautiful Wacom Cintiq 16 to use for our work. When COVID came, our in-person school life became online, and my dad bought me an old laptop and a cheap on sale Wacom Intuos Pro so that I may be able to finish my final animation project before school was over. I averaged a B in that class. Ever since I switched from traditional art to digital and it is incredible how digital art has evolved over the years. You have a wide variety of colors, brushes, and tools to help you be imaginative and create something beautiful within your limited space and budget. I’ve been attracted to semi-realistic art and wish to achieve that type of art style. After art, my second favorite hobby is music. I was inspired to play piano like my older brother, but I wasn’t motivated. However, when I was choosing my classes for junior high, I decided to join band class with a rough idea of what instrument I wanted to play (mostly because it’s the easiest). I choose clarinet. From then on to my senior year of high school, I’ve played clarinet in Band, Advanced Band, Wind Ensemble, Jazz Ensemble, and Marching Band as a part of my elective classes and extracurricular activities. Art and music have helped me understand that life is worth living if you have something that you love to do. If you have something you love to do, you can do it freely and as much as you desire.
    Bold Confidence Matters Scholarship
Confidence. It has always been something that I’ve lacked since I was very young, skeptical and wary, afraid to speak my mind or to stand up for myself. The textbook definitions from Google say confidence is the feeling or belief that one can rely on someone or something; firm trust, the state of feeling sure about the truth of something, or a sense of self-assurance arising from one’s appreciation of one’s abilities or qualities. My life goal is to Love Myself. People say that you can’t love someone until you love yourself. I don’t believe that. I love God, my family, friends, and those who love me. I didn’t have to love myself to love them. But, I can love myself. When I was younger, I always thought self-love was selfish; self-love was narcissistic. I didn’t even know what narcissism meant. But now I know that self-love is just as important as loving and putting those you love first. To achieve my goal, I plan to work on my health and wellness physically and emotionally. I would love to get a gym membership and start exercising. I’ll take care of my body and meditate regularly. It’d be nice to have someone help me, but I know I can do this myself. Young adults struggle with self-image and have trust issues as many reports, articles, and online influencers talk about these topics almost daily. Once I accomplish this goal, I wish to be someone and inspire others to do the same.
    Bold Empathy Scholarship
Empathy or Sympathy. Almost everyone gets these two mixed up when talking about personal situations or how they react to someone else’s misfortune. Sympathy is when you understand how someone feels. Empathy is when you comprehend why they feel that way. The best example I can give is a funeral I attended one time. He was a family friend diagnosed with cancer the year prior. He stated that he wanted his funeral to be a party as a happy departure from the Earth to God. His siblings, who knew nothing of God, were crying and weeping in distress and pain. Those who did know of God were silent and content. I was quiet and content. I lost my best friend to cancer and knew how it felt. I knew why they felt that way. They felt that without him, their lives would be empty, hollow, unfulfilling, etc. But that is not true. Even if he's not here physically, he is here spiritually. And one day, when we take our last breath, we will see him again. I make sure to treat others with empathy by putting myself in their shoes, having sympathy, mirror, don’t rub salt in the wound, and showing emotional support. I can connect with their emotions and perspectives better. I can acknowledge their feelings and respect them. I can imitate (not copy) them to build our close relationship. I can not pass judgment and give them the benefit of the doubt. And in the end, I can give them my trust and support so they wouldn’t have to be frightful or uncertain about their problems. After all, we are all strangers. No one knows us better than we do.
    Bold Gratitude Scholarship
Decades ago, when my brother was in high school, everyone would tell him that he lived in a “rich neighborhood.” Mom told him to be grateful for what God has given them. He was ten when he and my mom migrated to the United States (he’s 35 now). They stayed with extended family members in a small house outside of the town, where it was most dangerous. After my mom met and married my dad, they moved in with him. At the time, my mom and dad worked to support each other and my brother. But he was your typical rebellious teen, always getting into trouble, graduating later than his class, dating, and drinking profoundly afterward. He decided to tour with his band instead of pursuing higher education. That puts a lot of weight on my shoulders. My mom quit her job when she became pregnant. Unfortunately, she lost the baby when they surgically removed him/her from one of her fallopian tubes. The doctor claimed that she could continue to try with just one. She was scared since she was getting older (45) and feared that she wouldn’t be able to. By the miracle of God, she became pregnant with me. The nurse who assisted my mom during my birth was in training. My mom ended up getting extremely ill with infected blood clots in her womb and not to mention diabetes. Thankfully, we didn’t lose her. She is well today. My parents and I have faced so many financial and physical hardships over the past year, from my dad’s various work-related injuries to us being on the edge of losing our home several times. God has been merciful and compassionate with us. And for that, I thank him forevermore.
    Bold Career Goals Scholarship
I don’t exactly have a career set in mind since it’s all over the place based on my mood. However, my dream is to open a small bakery one day. My family and friends seem to like this idea of mine. I’ve made this a dream because every time I go to any grocery store and want sugar for my sweet tooth, the prices are ridiculously high for small portions. I don’t end up buying them to satisfy my cravings. Five dollars may not seem like a lot for four chocolate chip muffins. But it is for a low-income family like mine that barely averages enough a month to finish off the mortgage payments and utility bills. We barely strive for our share in groceries. Extra expenses for clothes and shoes happen once every two or three years. The labor costs apart from product costs differ significantly. I can either buy a dozen of donuts for a little over ten dollars or make three dozen for the same price at home. My bakery will be open to everyone despite their race, gender, or sexuality. Employers can work full-time, part-time, hourly, or volunteer. Business hours will be from 6 in the morning to noon, having enough time before opening and after closing for prep and cleanup. I have it planned to be in the perfect location with these times for those who are late for work or class to grab a quick donut for a few cents and nothing more. The extra desserts can be taken to the local homeless shelters at the end of the day to help out the community. It is very different from the tattoo and piercings shop my friend wants to open herself, but we’ve got our interests and dreams that we are free to follow.
    Bold Success Scholarship
It’s no secret that people are making money from playing video games. It’s hard to believe, but it’s happening as I type and as you read. Ever since I witnessed how amazing a video can be posted, liked, shared, and viewed anywhere, I’ve always wanted to do the same. However, I never took the first step. I’ve always hesitated and procrastinated ever since. That is until I hit the ‘’Go Live’’ button on Twitch, commentating over a mobile game called ‘’Disney Twisted-Wonderland” created by Aniple and Walt Disney Japan with Yana Toboso in charge of the original plan, main script, and character design. My main goal for the future is to make the world a better place through smiles and laughs. To achieve this, I’ve decided that I’d build an online community that, one day, I can give back to by either donating to help fund charities and special events or providing my viewers with better content for them to enjoy. Many content creators use either Youtube, Twitch, or both. Though you can’t make money on the first stream or the first video, it’s the start of the path I want to reach. I’m in no hurry to make money, but I know that some people have seen my past live streams and enjoy my content so far. That’s enough to make me smile, knowing that I’m making other people smile just as much.
    Bold Bucket List Scholarship
Bungee Jumping! That has yet to be crossed off of my list. And though I’m terrified of heights, bungee jumping seems to be a better option to overcome my fear than jumping off a plane. There are many different bucket lists from travel, work, health & wellness, finances, and everything in between. My bucket list recently is a lot more personal, leaning more toward health wellness than most that I’ve seen and heard of from friends and family. So far, I’m accomplished the following before and during junior high: Learn a new language Learn how to code Learn archery Learn crocheting Learn how to play an instrument Learn how to cook and bake Years ago, I learned Japanese with a free app on my phone and became fluent in conversation. Recently, I’ve picked up on Korean and can read it. I learned the basics of coding using an Arduino Board in tech class and how to hold a bow and shoot fake arrows at targets during P.E. My grandma taught my mom how to crochet at a young age and so my mom taught me. I still have the ugly scarf I made when I was around five years old. I learned to play the clarinet and became an excellent player, taking “first chair” – an honorary privilege. I taught myself how to play chess and taught it to my parent. It was fun. I mostly baked at home with box cake mixes but expanded with shortcakes, fruit tarts, and more. I’ve also cooked on special occasions for my family. They prefer my cooking over anyone else’s. As I said, my bucket list now is focusing more on my health and wellness. I hope to accomplish my goals just as I have with these.
    Bold Reflection Scholarship
I have been babysitting my cousin’s 13-month-old baby girl for the past year. My cousin had an accidental pregnancy with her then-boyfriend. After the announcement, he left her to cope with the support of her family. I don't know why she continues to give her baby and her family such a hard time. Working eight to twelve hours five days a week, apart from the eight hours to sleep, my cousin didn't spend any time with her baby. And on the weekends, my cousin would beg her parents to take care of the baby so that she may go out and party. The baby was sleep-deprived, thin, and moody all the time. My cousin has drugged her baby at this point with sleeping medicine every night. Rarely is there ever a smile on the baby girl's face. One time, my cousin forbid my aunt from seeing the baby and was forced to listen to the upsetting wails from the room down the hall, unable to do anything about it. Thankfully, with the care and support from my mom and me, she is doing much better. My cousin now works from 5 am to 3 pm but would work overtime for extra cash to spend on herself and barely be able to pay rent or afford milk. The hope I have for my future is that when the time does come that I want to settle down and start a family, from what I've learned and experienced, my child won't start their first years like my cousin's baby. Instead, my family will be fulfilling and joyous.
Bold Hope for the Future Scholarship
“I’m your hope. You’re my hope. I’m J-Hope.” J-Hope, also known as Jung Hoseok, is a member of the popular South Korean boy band BTS. His stage name, J-Hope, comes from his desire to represent hope for his fans. He is "the hope of BTS.” It is also a reference to the myth of Pandora's box, as after the box opened and all the evils inside were released to the world, the only thing left was hope. Hope gives us a sense of security and reassurance that something good will happen someday. However, the predictable thing about life is its unpredictability. Nothing is in our absolute control. Sometimes, hope can lead to disappointment if failure is inevitable. I wish not to be pessimistic. This may sound stupid, but since I was a little girl, I’ve dreamt of finding my prince – as one may have said, ‘’my true love.” Someone who loves me unconditionally and is there when I need him most. Nowadays, I know that is impossible. No one is that perfect. That hope that I’ve held onto is what I strive to find in my future. And once I do, I can find something else to be hopeful for and strive for that, and so on. One has to be careful. You can’t hope that world peace will come or that all war will end because that is something that absolutely cannot happen. Yes, it’s something that the majority wants, but so long as there is someone who thinks otherwise, it’s unachievable. You only live once. You have to make today count just as much or more than yesterday. That’s how hope works.
    Bold Relaxation Scholarship
Who doesn’t love a spa day? A day of relaxation with massages, facials, and body treatments such as a scrub or exfoliation. But going to a spa can be very expensive. And in my case, I’m highly introverted. Going to a spa makes me feel awkward and uneasy, especially since I’m very self-conscious about my body. But that is what I love about at-home spa days. There are no wandering eyes, judgemental thoughts, or awkward conversations about my skin condition. It’s cheap and fun. I start with a hot bath as the steam opens up my pores so that I can exfoliate with a cleanser. You can spoil yourself with a lit candle, rose petals, or essential oils. I also put on my favorite playlist to listen to while I soak. Afterward, I wash my hair before stepping out to moisturize. I usually change into my sleepwear and tie my hair up and put on a hairband before applying a face mask. To pass the time, I watch Netflix in the living room and eat either snacks or leftovers. I'd take off the mask, brush my teeth, and head to bed early for a nice long and much-needed sleep to finish off my day. It’s not luxurious as a spa would be with its hot tubs, steam rooms, baths, masks, and massage tables with specialists for body therapy. But I can have my day of relaxation however I want. Taking a day off to focus on me with pampering is therapeutic and helps my mental health by reducing my anxiety, relieving my built-in stress, and releasing the tension in my muscles. It’s essential to take care of yourself instead of letting all the negativity in your life constantly beat you down.

My best friend and I drifted apart in high school. During our junior year of high school, before Covid-19, we shared a free class period. One day, we drew each other something since that's how we became friends in the first place. Though I had this skill since preschool, she began her journey in middle school. I took a year off drawing while she took multiple art classes to fill her curriculum. After exchanging our illustrations, she was stunned by how much better my drawing was than hers. Once she realized that she could never surpass my talent, she became jealous. Truth be told, I’m self-taught. I learned and continue to learn either by drawing on my own or by watching short tutorial videos online. The only time I took a proper art class was in middle school and I did not like it. I found more joy in drawing whatever I wanted whenever I wanted without any restrictions, deadlines, grading, etc. People say you don’t need fancy and expensive pencils, markers, brushes, etc to make good art. I disagree. Art becomes better quality with better equipment. Millions of videos compare $1 markers to $30 markers and there is a huge difference. Practice is repeatedly doing something to perfect the outcome you’re looking for. I rarely practice. Art comes naturally to me. I can watch one video and study everything shown in it. I can draw and have the same result without much work. That’s the beauty in my talent. It’s special and unique to me and no one else. This gift was given to me and I'm disappointed in myself for not expressing it proudly for everyone to see. But, I don't wish to "chase clout" so I'd rather keep my talent to myself and practice when need be.

“Do you even believe in God?” Those words my mom said when I was eleven years old broke me into a million pieces. My friends knew I wasn’t luxurious enough to buy my merch from my favorite band, my favorite anime, etc. So, they bought me a few posters from anime I loved and anime I had yet to watch. They were useless but valuable to me. My mother walked into my room and mistakenly judged my character based on what she saw. An “Assassination Classroom” poster in which one of the main protagonists, Karma Akane, held a pistol in the far bottom right. She confronted me after school with her glaring eyes and threatening tone. I was shy. I never misbehaved. I was emotionally unstable. For the first time, I talked back. I yelled about why ask me that. I have yet to be baptized and never spoke about my religion proudly, but I believe. I know God is real. God, himself, proved it to me. She hit me. It hurt. It not only bruised my skin but my heart as well. She tore the posters down and threw them away. I cried that night in my room alone, hearing my father and mother argue across the hall. I never told my friends what happened. Instead, I kept silent. Years later, I’m almost nineteen now. I know she feels guilt for what she did. Her eyes tell. I forgave her years ago. I still watch anime and such because it makes me happy when I do. I gawk when I see the pretty animation and emotionally driven storytelling. My mom sees this and has accepted it, coming out of her overly religious shell. Thank God. In a way, we both persevered through this in our way.

“I’m sorry, but I’d like to take a second to thank my arms for always being by my side, my legs for always supporting me, and my fingers ‘cuz I can always count on them.” Independence is a virtue. Avoiding debts with others puts us in control as a creator rather than a user. Independence ensures the world stays in balance with one’s ability to become self-reliant, to be able to do what is necessary to create a fulfilling life. We can’t rely 100% on our friends and family. People change; their priorities change, their feelings change, and their love changes. We all make mistakes and poor decisions. They don’t define us. It’s how we handle those mistakes and decisions that build our foundation for independence. But, people who aren’t willing to change become unreliable. Humans are egocentric creatures by nature without context. In our world, we are the center of it. We were built to survive on our own. Yet, simultaneously, we create our disharmony. That is why we build relationships. Relationships can be either safe or toxic. This is why learning to stand on our own will make it easier to stand alone when things get ugly. We shouldn’t ever ask for help. We should ask as often as possible. However, when the time comes, we must be ready to take on any burden we lay upon ourselves when there is no one to help and it’s the only possible solution.

People say that you can’t love someone until you love yourself. I don’t believe that. I love God. I love my family. I love my pets. I love my friends. I love those who love me too. I didn’t need to love myself to love them. But, I have the ability to love myself. When I was younger, I’ve always thought that self-love was selfish; that self-love was narcissistic. I didn’t even know what narcissism meant. I made that a life goal of mine: Love Myself. The way I achieved and accomplished self-love is on the behalf of BTS, the South Korean boy band. Let me explain. Live, Laugh, Love Life is hard. There is no denying that. But it’s too short to feel sad all the time which is why it’s important to be happy for as long as possible while it lasts. "The most important thing to enjoy you life - to be happy - it's all that matters." -Audrey Hepburn 사랑해요 (saranghaeyo) means “I love you” in Korean. Love makes me happy. The sense of feeling loved, witnessing love like how I imagine it to be puts a smile on my face and makes me feel euphoric. The reason I watch Korean dramas over American shows or Novellas is for their higher production value, intense and often engrossing storylines, and quality acting that build an emotional connection between the characters and the audience. They inspire viewers in some ways or another. Putting myself in the perspective of the female lead facing a stereotypical love triangle in a romcom makes me feel like my heart is going to explode, my stomach is doing somersaults, and my face is burning. This makes me feel a type of joy that is unlike anything else I’ve felt. ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ (kekekekeke) is the Korean equivalent of LOL. Laughter also makes me happy. The freedom to express my joy through an auditory emotion I can share with others is also a great feeling. Laughter is considered not only as the best medicine but also a contagious disease. I constantly watch my favorite Youtubers and Twitch streamers to relieve stress and make myself feel better. They not only make people’s lives better by providing content that is unique to them but they have saved lives as shown through the comments of their fans. They fight constantly against hate and controversy which shows how passionate they are for their work and community.

I’m a simple girl. I like simple things. The most simple piece of jewelry in the world to me is an earring. I’ve worn earrings ever since my parents took me to the mall to pierce my ears at the age of three. During the Baroque Period, a time where paintings involved a lot of high contrast and dramatic lighting known as chiaroscuro, Johannes Vermeer painted a tronie called the “Girl with a Pearl Earring” also known as the “Mona Lisa of the North.” Why paint her? In the 17th century, the Netherlands turned against aristocracy and the Catholic church leaving many cities unsupervised by kings or bishops so many artists were left without traditional patrons. The “Girl with a Pearl Earring” allows the viewer to engage with her as a psychological subject rather than a theatrical narratic scene. Her gaze and parted lips are alluring. At the time, Johannes Vermeer’s art was not famous until less than two hundred years after his death when a French painter-critic publishlished a description in 1866. The “Girl with a Pearl Earring” became one of Vermeer’s most famous pieces by the 21st century. Much like art today, it takes time for people to recognize and appreciate a piece of art out of millions through the multitude of media that is accessible to everyone. I am inspired to create art that depicts the same captivity as the “Girl with a Pearl Earring” even if it takes a million years for someone to see it. Art is my passion.

1 Timothy 6:10 For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs. The Pearl by John Steinback is a parable about a Mexican-Indian pearl diver named Kino. One day, he finds a substancial pearl and is transformed by the evil it attracts. As a part of the minority, at first glance, the pearl symbolized great hope and fortune. Kino saw the pearl as a gateway for a better life. However, everyone in La Paz – including a priest, a doctor, and businessmen – pursue him for it. Kino’s wife Juana and baby Coyotito face the barbaric consequences of his greed and ambition under the possession of the pearl. An inspirational books' main purpose is to depict an example of change in a major character’s life in order to inspire readers to make such changes in their own life. They create optimism towards a more positive outlook in life. The Pearl doesn’t have a happy ending. The moral is to be content with what you have. “The grass is always greener on the other side” – a proverb in which people revolve around possessions and the need to have more than others’ whether it’s a greener lawn or expensive accessories. My family and I don’t follow this mindset. My father works in agriculture only earning the minimum wage. We live in a big house with a big fence. My friends, on the other hand, have both parents working high-income jobs. They live in a small house with a small fence. But, they have the car of the year, the latest phones, watches, etc. I don’t need any of that. ‘Cause what I have is good. It’s good enough for me.
