You may think that classics are rather boring. Outdated, old English, not relevant to modern-day life, probably hard to understand, humorless, too long. If you think these things, then you have obviously never read "The Old Man and The Sea" by Ernest Hemingway. This book is a masterpiece through and through, it's got everything you could ever want in a great book, drama, complex ideas presented in a rather simple fashion, and amazing feats of ridiculousness. The Old Man in the sea is about an elderly gentleman named Santiago. He goes on this epic adventure to catch a marlin (which is a really big type of fish). He ends up catching this huge fish in a very dramatic battle of wills that lasts several days, and on his way home he gets attacked by a band of sharks. Once he gets home, all of the sharks have eaten his fish, and all he has left is the skeleton of this giant fish and a really good story. At one point during the shark scene, Hemingway describes Santiago.. punching the sharks. In the face. It was hilarious and ridiculous and at that moment I decided that this was going to be my favorite book of all time. I've read a lot of books, probably hundreds or thousands at this point. I love them more than anything. (I'm hoping to go on to study to be a librarian eventually). I think this one sticks out to me more than any of the others because it's saying that life is about the journey and not the destination, which I think is important in a time in our lives where everyone seems so caught up in uncertainty about the future.
