When given the opportunity of attending college I hope to obtain a BS in Kinesiology at The School of Education to then move forward into Graduate school to acquire a doctorate degree. With my doctorate I aspire to become an Occupational Therapist to further help those in need. I believe I am best fit for this career because I have had major surgery and recovery in the last two years and I am still going through that process all over again. Since going through surgery, recovery, and the pain of it not working right the first time; I have been challenged through this process. Throughout this whole experience I have found my passion for helping others going through similar struggles. Alongside a lengthy education, my career goals as a whole is to assist patients who have undergone a struggle that they have to recover from. Whether it might be recovering from a stroke, brain trauma, chronic conditions, autism, or anyone who needs help developing or maintaining skills I hope to be the one they find peace in. I am inspired to help people in need, not only physically but mentally. Encouraging them to believe in themselves even in times where it seems like nothing can change. My main goal of being a successful Occupational Therapist is to assist patients to help better their body and themselves while being a person they can depend on. Nevertheless, I have grown this passion through my struggles in surgery and the first surgery not going well. I wish that I had met with an occupational therapist afterwards or had some kind of support to prevent my now second surgery from being necessary. Had I met with an occupational therapist, I would have had the tools to re-enter Cheer and regular life activities better prepared. I also met with my chiropractor which helped me overcome back pain from stunting. The last three years at Troy High School I have been an active teammate in Cheerleading. I was a natural leader and strived to be the best I could for my team but sometimes my body wouldn’t allow that. Physically my back would have sharp pains from stunting or my body was overdone from the work I would put it through on a weekly basis. Mentally I struggled with anxiety regarding my position on the team which challenged me to believe in myself and know how much I could handle. I began meeting with a chiropractor and started to feel much better. From this experience it made me realize how I can help people feel better from something they are struggling with. In addition, my sweet friend Elianah on my cheer team is someone I look up to and work hard to be my best for. Elianah has Down Syndrome. She joined our squad knowing she has special needs and would require extra time to learn and adjust. I would always choose to be loving and caring for Elianah knowing she needed some assistance. I enjoyed my time with her and still frequently cheer her on. This was also a relationship I built that helped my drive for Occupational Therapy to become a passion. Lastly, any scholarship offered would benefit myself and my education by giving me the opportunity to start schooling with the elongated process of seven years of education. Any scholarship would also allow me to give my full attention to my studies without having to rely on working outside of my schools’ campus. I do plan on working at school to help with finances but this scholarship would alleviate some of the burden of having to balance an outside job and preparing for my work in my studies. I hope to work in Alabama and be able to give black to my community that helped me get to where I will be. I also am open to wherever this job takes me, as my heart is for what I am doing not where I am working. Overall, in the next seven years post graduating Troy High School I aspire to go through college with an undergraduate degree and graduate all seven years with a doctorate in Physical Therapy with an emphasis in Occupational Therapy. I chose Occupational Therapy because my values align with helping others through difficult times because I have come face to face with similar struggles. Whether it's pediatrics or the elderly I know I can rise above and be the person my patient can rely on. I am very excited to start this next chapter of my life and leave my legacy in all the new steps I take.

The past three years at THS being a part of Cheer was more than just cheering on the sidelines. Obviously competition season would come after cheering on Football and Basketball but my team made it a goal to cheer on our community as well. Therefore, my cheer team partnered with Kindness Matters Legacy during the Thanksgiving holiday. KM Legacy put on a 5k to raise money and awareness to further help the cure for brain cancer. Our role in this organization was to come early, set up, and to cheer on the runners participating. I enjoyed this event because I helped my community by supporting it as well. The first year I showed up to help I brought my pom poms and invigorating voice to help encourage the participants. The following year I did just so but decided to also be a part of this event. I was able to run the 5k and donate some money to help the cause. I found this inspiring and an event I often look forward to. This event inspired me to create a club at school, known as Acts of Kindness or AOK, to spread acts of kindness at school and in the community. I aspire to partner with KM Legacy again, but with my club this time. I hope to bring others from school to spread awareness and serve as an act of kindness to the people of KM Legacy and to the community participating. Through Cheer, KM Legacy has had a true impact on my life. I show kindness to others and compassion by how I choose to be a leader in Acts of Kindness (AOK). I also lead my cheer team with positivity and encouragement. I believe that all people respond better to positive reinforcement and work better together when I lead with kindness and model respect to my team. Now looking to attend the University of Alabama, I hope to obtain a BS in Kinesiology, then go on to grad school. With my doctorate I aspire to become an Occupational Therapist to further help those in need. My main goal of being a successful Occupational Therapist is to assist patients to help better their body and themselves while being a person they can depend on. For the past three years of high school, I have held regular babysitting jobs as well as being a shift manager at Pirate Coast Paddleboards. I absolutely love working in both of these capacities because I get to work with kids. I am CPR certified, Red Cross trained, and hold my WSI lifeguarding licenses so this all comes in handy as I work with families, customer service, training employees, and handle all operations on a shift basis. I have been so fortunate to have a regular job as this has assisted me in being a more organized student and making connections through work. I have learned how to balance both work and school and still treat both with kindness and enjoyment in all I do.

Throughout my high school experience I have faced multiple challenges. When adjusting to a new environment, coming in as a freshman I did not understand what I was up against. Upon attending Troy High School, third in the state of California, I find it hard to stand out, while at neighboring schools fairly easy. Ultimately I had to choose what would better prepare me for the future and the rigor of my education. I have always been an overachieving scholar and applied for Cambridge level English going into ninth grade. I realized I couldn’t balance everything equally, alongside Cheer and other extracurriculars. This resulted in choosing summer school to fix my first semester english grade; following the second semester thriving in my class. Sophomore year brought my first surgery which spiked my mental health again. I persevered with a therapist and academic help to obtain good grades since surgery was at the end of the semester. Furthermore, attending a TECH school made mathematics a difficult subject. My junior year brought AP Pre-Calc as the only option which made it challenging to conquer. While continuing in AP Pre-Calc second semester, I simultaneously repeated the first semester online for a better grade. This heavily shows my commitment to school and learning. Entering my Senior year I am now scheduled for my second surgery and hope to rise above it while finishing high school well. My mental health has been rocky this last semester but I have sought help to overcome these obstacles before college. When given the opportunity of attending college at The University of Alabama, I hope to obtain a BS in Kinesiology at their School of Education to then move forward into Graduate school to acquire a doctorate degree. I love the relationships I have built over the past five years and work on being a role model to students. I have great experiences in serving at Vacation Bible School here in Fullerton and then taking it to Utah for a new group of kids. I also love being a part of Rainbow Express, where I can connect with special needs students and be a part of their fun week away. This past year I founded a club at my school called Acts of Kindness (AOK). We serve people in our community and at school with Acts of Kindness, such as encouraging notes, food drives, spreading awareness of breast cancer, and partnering with CHOC hospital. Whether it's pediatrics or the elderly I know I can rise above and be the person my patient can rely on. I am very excited to start this next chapter of my life and leave my legacy in all the new steps I take.

When given the opportunity of attending college at The University of Alabama, I hope to obtain a BS in Kinesiology at The School of Education to then move forward into Graduate school to acquire a doctorate degree. Alongside a lengthy education, my career goals as a whole are to assist patients who have undergone a struggle that they have to recover from. Lastly, any scholarship would benefit myself and my education by giving me the opportunity to start schooling with the elongated process of seven years of education. My parents work on both sides of the country and I have held a job throughout the last three years of high school in order to help out with any extra school expenses and activities. I qualify for the Pell Grant and am excited to be able to go to school with a direct purpose of getting things done. Overall, in the next seven years post graduating Troy High School I aspire to go through college with an undergraduate degree and graduate all seven years with a doctorate in Physical Therapy with an emphasis in Occupational Therapy. For the past three years at THS, being a part of Cheer was more than just cheering on the sidelines. Obviously we cheered for all teams, but my team made it a goal to cheer on our community as well. Therefore, my cheer team partnered with Kindness Matters Legacy during the Thanksgiving holiday. KM Legacy puts on a 5k to raise money and awareness to further help the cure for brain cancer. Our role in this organization was to come early, set up, and to cheer on the runners participating. I enjoyed this event because I helped my community by supporting it as well. The first year I showed up to help I brought my pom poms and invigorating voice to help encourage the participants. The following year I was able to run the 5k and donate some money to help the cause. I hope to bring others from school to spread awareness and serve as an act of kindness to the people of KM Legacy and to the community participating. Through Cheer, KM Legacy has had a true impact on my life. I am also deeply committed to service at my church. I lead a small group of 1st-3rd graders every Sunday in worship, games, and activities. When given the opportunity of attending college I hope to obtain a BS in Kinesiology and to then move forward into Graduate school to acquire a doctorate degree. With my doctorate I aspire to become an Occupational Therapist to further help those in need. I believe I am best fit for this career because I have had major surgery and recovery in the last two years and had my second surgery again last November. From this experience it made me realize how I can help people feel better from something they are struggling with. In addition, my sweet friend Elianah is on my cheer team and I work hard to be my best. Lastly, any scholarship would benefit my education by giving me the opportunity to start schooling sooner. Any scholarship would also allow me to give my full attention to my studies without having to rely on working outside of my schools’ campus. I do plan on working at school to help with finances but this scholarship would alleviate some of the burden of having to balance an outside job and preparing for my studies. I am open to wherever this job takes me, as my heart is for what I am doing not where I am working.

Thoughts of transitioning from middle school to high school had me in deep anxiety for quite awhile. A few years prior, I was undergoing a similar feeling of being a new kid at school going into 5th grade, I made some new friends and realized it was going to go well. COVID-19 came into the picture sooner rather than later and suddenly I was using zoom as a classroom. Jumping up to middle school remotely took away some of the stress of transition but now I had to face a new transition into high school. In middle school the book “Wonder” was brought up and August was a character I could rely on and relate to. I enjoy the movie even more. The frightening feeling of someone looking at me oddly in a new environment was terrifying. Middle school opened my eyes to what the real world could be which brought anxiety and depression. Throughout the movie “Wonder”, Auggie met Julian and although it was a rough friendship at points, they worked together to be fast friends. Towards the end of the movie, you can see how not only Julian but other kids around Auggie made a friend of him. I learned through this movie and saw in my own life how it takes time to find true friends. Although friends may come and go, and often you have to spend time with them to know their true colors, the ones that stay are most important. Conversing to high school I left most of my friends behind but I had my best friend, Brooke, to rely on. I quickly learned having one true friend is more valuable than a large group of acquaintances. August also struggled with believing in himself. He often wondered if he was good enough for the people at his school. When thinking of going to Troy High School I thought of being the bottom class of the school as a freshman and feeling like I was being looked down upon. I was fully prepared to hide in the shadows because I did not believe that I was enough. This movie made me realize it is more than okay to stand out, that is what often makes you special or unique. It is more difficult to blend in, and by trying to blend in, I was not being true to myself. I often wonder where I would be without Auggie’s lessons that helped me find who I am when transitioning into something unknown.

With my doctorate I aspire to become an Occupational Therapist to further help those in need. 1. I am more than just a student at Troy High School. I am a leader, entrepreneur, and a loyalist. I show the aspects of being a strong leader through the job, Pirate Coast Paddle Boards, I have sustained for the last two years while carrying the weight of my other commitments. I have not only worked opening and closing shifts but hired and trained new positions and shown exceptional customer service. Alongside, I have discovered that I am an entrepreneur by trade. With having parents on both coasts, I have found a passion for travel and photography. I explore new places and have an eye for capturing moments. This has turned into a social media following (@chasin.sunsets_) and numerous practice among friends and family with portrait photography. I find that I do better in school when I allow time for my love of photography and exploring to be nurtured. Overall, I am a loyalist. I have made promised commitments and stuck them out even when times got hard. I have shown this in my commitment to Cheer the last three years, only leaving this year due to a second required surgery. Also, on a weekly basis I spend every Sunday morning with a group of 1st-3rd grade girls. I interact with them, build relationships, and teach them about God. Throughout the last five years this opportunity has enriched my life. Furthermore, with the absence of Cheer I have established a Club known as Acts of Kindness (AOK) to uplift others at school and the community with encouraging displays of service. In the end, I am a leader, entrepreneur, and loyalist in my school and community. I am more than a student. 2. Sophie Miller, the cheerleader. This new title appointed to me was magical. I was excited to be on a team, be the face of school spirit, and walk around campus with my blinged out uniform. Throughout the last three years I became so confident in who I was in cheer and believed it was who I was . I made lifelong friends, learned how to throw girls my age up in the air, only ever counted up to eight, and wore bright red lipstick with a pearly white smile to my crowd. Cheerleading was not easy but every football game and competition felt worth it. Every day I would go home and have to remind myself that I was more than just being a cheerleader, more than what people thought of me. Cheerleading held me on a pedestal, however I now get to show Troy High School that there is more to me than cheer. I am more than a sparkly bow and tall trophy. I am a human being: I have bad days, I struggle with mental/physical health, and I am nowhere near perfect. I go to school carrying the weight of my AP and Honors classes, trying to balance friendships and family, while living up to the stereotype everyone sees me as. I am undergoing my second surgery and fourth time at therapy. I love working at the beach, taking hikes, and going to church with my friends. I am much more than just a cheerleader for the Warriors. Single stories are just a mask over your true identity. If people at Troy High School, let alone the world, looked beyond the silver lining they would realize we may all be more similar than we realize. I loved cheerleading but I wish more people nowadays would smile and wave at me in the hall because they know Sophie Miller, not just the cheerleader.
