As a child, I had a rare immune deficiency that put me in the hospital for most of my childhood. My mom constantly says that it was because of the nurses that we had that she was able to push through and stay positive. Today, I am alive because of those nurses who poured into not only my life, but my family's life. I am pursuing a career in pediatric nursing because I want to be just like those nurses. I want to be there and provide peace and comfort for children who are terrified and sick. I also have a love for science and medicine. My nursing classes are typical the best part of my week. I know that I am in the right field because I don't get upset that I have to go to class or bored when I am in class. I also have a large love for children. I have worked in a daycare for a couple years now and can say without a measure of doubt that I love children. Little kids are so intriguing to watch as they grow and learn new things. (plus they are adorable) I think that pediatric nursing takes a special person with a special heart and I believe that I have what it takes to become a fantastic pediatric nurse. I think that someone who is a pediatric nurse has to have a huge, caring heart but also has to be tough because this job it isn't just giving little kids princess stickers after their appointment. There are hard and horrible moments that come with this territory. Holding a screaming child while they are having a procedure done is never easy. Comforting a devastated parent or family member is heart breaking. Death is a horrible thing, but it stings a little more when they are just a little kid. Nursing is not an easy job, it is physically, emotionally, mentally, and spiritually exhausting and it takes a special person to still have a love for it, through all of those challenges. Nursing, especially pediatric nursing, is a lot more than caring for the patient. You are also caring for a family unit that cares more about your patient than anyone on the Earth. Pediatric nursing is painful, but is so rewarding. Nothing compares to the giggles of a little kid or the smile on their face when they see you. I know that I will make a great pediatric nurse and I hope that you can also see that potential in me and support me on my journey to becoming one. Thank you!
