Future Female Educators Scholarship
Education has been the most important thing in my eyes since I started attending school. I adored being in school as I looked up to each and every educator because I knew I wanted to be just like them when I was older. School was a safe space for me to show that I loved learning new things.
I'm studying to be an early childhood educator because I want to make students love learning again. Over the past decade there has been a large trend with students strongly disliking school and the pandemic has only furthered this agenda. There was even a time where I had an extremely negative attitude towards school because I felt like I wasn't learning and gaining the education I was paying for.
One thing I hope to emphasize in my classroom is inclusivity around identity. As a biracial and queer future educator I never saw my identities being praised in the classroom. I didn't feel validated and believed that there was an issue with having these identities because I didn't see them in the books I read or the resources my teachers used in the classroom. I want to be this advocate for my students and make sure that they know that they're wanted in this classroom. I want them to see themselves in my classroom and come to school every day knowing that I will accept them and love them for who we are. I want them to love coming to school because they know that they have someone in their corner no matter what.
Education has given me so many amazing opportunities and connected me with the people I love and care for so deeply. Education has granted me the opportunity to be the first in my family to go to college. Education has allowed me to have a voice that I can use to stand up for others in my community who don't have this privilege. Education has given me this career path that I've been dreaming about for 16 years.
