Bio

Hi, my name is Sophia. I'm currently a senior at the University of Pennsylvania studying math and economics. I'm passionate about finding ways in which I can explore my own interests while also finding ways to help those around me. Currently, this had led me to an interest in real estate. I hope to one day make meaningful impacts in the ability of minorities to own homes, and also contribute to efforts to find cheaper housing solutions for our country.

The change I wish to see in the world is for everyone to be accepted for and supported in who they are. So many people judge others for their choices, or even just for traits one cannot change. I truly believe that through acceptance and support , the world can become a better place to live. As a black queer woman, I've faced a lot of prejudice throughout my life. Ever since I was young, I've been judged for my gender and race by people who have never even spoken to me. As I got older the adversity I faced only continued to pile on as I gradually came out to my family and peers. I once again had to face the judgement of complete strangers, but also face judgement from those who once loved and supported me. Luckily, I've found love and support in the people I have chosen to surround myself with at my university. Resources on my campus have allowed me to better immerse myself in communities that comprise my identity, and to better understand the experiences of my peers who have faced similar situations to my own. I've listened to their stories about the prejudice they've also had to face throughout their lives and continue to face daily. What I've learned is that many people face these challenges of discrimination, but these challenges are simply manmade obstacles that stem from ignorance and hatred in others. Humans are taught ignorance and are not born hating people of different backgrounds, and I believe anyone can make a conscious choice to set aside who they may have judged in the past and start to lead a life filled with acceptance and love. Acceptance, love, and support of anyone sounds like such a monumental, yet simple, task. Simple for the fact that it does not take much from one person to make the change to be more inclusive and not spread hatred, but monumental in the fact that it requires this positive change in so many around the world to be widespread. However, I feel like a change in one person can still have an impact on the well-being of many. Being accepted for who you are brings a sense of fulfillment and joy to one, or at least it has to me as I've found people who support me living truthfully to who I am. Even just a couple of people actively choosing to accept those around them can impart this joy on others. This is why I choose to accept those around me for who they are. I strive to understand and support people I meet. I urge anyone reading this to begin to do the same, for while my wish may never be granted, this simple change can still make the world of difference for anyone you meet and help to change the world one person at a time.
