Hodge Legacy Community Service Scholarship
Giving back is important because it reminds us that success is not meant to be kept to ourselves. Everyone deserves to be helped and given a chance, especially when life circumstances make it harder for them to succeed. No one chooses the situation they are born into, but we can choose how we respond when we see someone struggling. Helping others is not only the right thing to do, but it also creates a stronger community where people feel supported instead of alone.
One experience that showed me the importance of giving back was being a science tutor. At first, I thought tutoring was simply about explaining difficult topics and helping someone improve their grades. However, I quickly realized it was more than that. Many students I worked with did not lack intelligence; they lacked confidence and meaningful relationships. They just needed someone patient enough to explain concepts in a way that made sense and make the effort to be their friend. Watching a student go from feeling overwhelmed to finally understanding a lesson was extremely rewarding. It reminded me that sometimes the smallest support can create a huge change in someone’s future. I didn't need to be payed to do this, their confidence in themselves was enough. Tutoring taught me that helping others can be fulfilling because you get to witness growth and know you played a role in it.
Another moment that truly shaped my belief in paying it forward was when I raised $500 for a family in Somalia so they could afford food. While $500 may not seem life-changing to everyone, it had a major impact on that family’s life. The money was enough to feed them for up to a year. Knowing that I was able to help a family live a better year without constant worry was powerful. I did not have to travel across the world or have a huge amount of wealth; I simply had to advocate for them and take action. That experience made me realize how much difference one person can make when they care enough to try.
Giving back is important because it creates a cycle of kindness. When people are helped, they are more likely to help someone else in the future. This is how communities grow stronger and how the world becomes more compassionate. Paying it forward matters because it reminds us that we are connected, even to people we may never meet. Helping others is not just about charity; it is about humanity.
Overall, giving back matters because everyone deserves support, encouragement, and the opportunity to succeed. My experiences as a tutor and fundraiser showed me that helping others is not only meaningful for the person receiving help, but also for the person giving it. It builds purpose, gratitude, and hope. Even small acts of kindness can create lasting change, and that is why giving back is so important.

Science and leadership have always played a vital role in shaping the future of humanity. Together, they drive progress by transforming curiosity into innovation and ideas into action. From early discoveries to modern advancements, innovation and curiosity have brought society to where it is today, and they will continue to be powerful forces guiding us toward even greater achievements.
Science begins with curiosity, the desire to understand how the world works and to ask questions about the unknown. This curiosity has led to groundbreaking discoveries that have transformed everyday life. Advances in medicine, technology, and energy have improved health, communication, and overall quality of life. Every scientific breakthrough, no matter how large or small, starts with someone willing to explore new ideas and challenge existing knowledge. Without curiosity, progress would stagnate, and the future would remain unchanged.
While science drives discovery, leadership ensures that those discoveries are used responsibly and effectively. Leaders play a critical role in supporting innovation by providing direction, resources, and ethical guidance. Scientific advancements require thoughtful leadership to ensure they benefit society rather than cause harm. Strong leaders encourage collaboration, inspire confidence, and help translate scientific knowledge into solutions that address real-world problems.
Throughout history, leadership combined with science has pushed humanity forward. Leaders who supported exploration, public health initiatives, and technological development helped shape the modern world. Today, leadership is more important than ever as society faces complex global challenges such as climate change, disease, and technological change. Solving these issues requires not only scientific understanding but also leaders who can unite people and make informed, forward-thinking decisions.
Innovation is where science and leadership intersect. When curiosity leads to discovery and leadership provides guidance, innovation becomes a driving force for progress. Emerging technologies such as renewable energy, artificial intelligence, and medical research demonstrate how innovation can open new possibilities and create positive change. These advancements show that progress is intentional and built through continuous learning and strong leadership.
As we look to the future, science and leadership will continue to shape the path forward. The same curiosity that fueled past discoveries will inspire future breakthroughs, while effective leadership will ensure those breakthroughs are used wisely. Together, science and leadership remind us that innovation is not just about advancement, but about building a better, more sustainable world for generations to come.
Boddu/Nekkanti Dance Scholarship Fund
Dance has shaped who I am in ways I never could have imagined when I first stepped into a studio. For twelve years, dance was more than just an activity I participated in after school; it became a constant presence in my life, one that influenced how I expressed myself, built relationships, and gained confidence in who I am today.
One of the greatest gifts dance gave me was a way to express myself without words. There were moments when I struggled to explain how I felt, whether it was stress, excitement, sadness, or joy. Dance gave me an outlet for those emotions. Through movement, I could communicate feelings that were difficult to say out loud. Each style I learned allowed me to explore different parts of myself, helping me grow emotionally as well as physically. Dance became my safe space, a place where I felt understood even when I couldn’t fully understand myself.
Over the years, I moved through different dance studios, and with each move came a new community. While change can be intimidating, dance helped turn unfamiliar spaces into places that felt like home. Every studio welcomed me with its own culture, traditions, and people, and each one became another family in my life. I formed friendships that went beyond the dance floor, built on shared dedication, long rehearsals, and unforgettable performances. These communities taught me teamwork, trust, and the importance of supporting one another, lessons that have stayed with me far beyond dance.
Performing on stage played a huge role in building my confidence. Standing under bright lights in front of an audience was nerve-wracking at first, but with every performance, I grew more comfortable in my own skin. Dance taught me how to handle pressure, recover from mistakes, and keep moving forward no matter what. Applause wasn’t just a reward; it was proof that I was capable of pushing past fear and believing in myself. That confidence didn’t stay on stage; it followed me into classrooms, social situations, and everyday challenges.
Dance also taught me discipline and perseverance. It required commitment, hard work, and resilience, even on days when I felt tired or discouraged. Through years of practice and dedication, I learned that growth doesn’t happen overnight and that progress is built through consistency and passion.
Looking back, I realize that dance didn’t just change how I moved, it changed how I saw myself. It gave me a voice, a family, and the confidence to stand tall in who I am. Though my time dancing may have ended, the lessons, strength, and self-belief it gave me will stay with me for the rest of my life.
Marcia Bick Scholarship
When you find a crinkled hundred-dollar bill on the ground, you do not ignore it or question its worth. You pick it up, smooth it out, and recognize its value. Even if it is worn, torn, or misplaced, it is still worth one hundred dollars. You do not judge it based on where it came from or how it got there; you hold onto it, knowing it can be used for something meaningful.
At one point in my life, I was that hundred-dollar bill, except there was no one there to pick me up. I had to learn my value on my own and find motivation within myself. My family has faced significant financial hardship that has deeply shaped who I am today. We moved frequently, and I experienced my parents’ difficult divorce at a young age. As the oldest of five children, I quickly realized that my siblings were watching how I handled these challenges.
My mother worked multiple jobs just to keep food on the table, while my father stopped contributing financially. Watching her struggle pushed me to take responsibility for my future early on. I understood that if I wanted something better, I would have to work for it. That realization sparked a determination in me that carried into every part of my life. I committed myself fully to my academics, dance, volleyball, and school clubs, not because it was easy, but because it was necessary.
Despite the obstacles, I have maintained a 4.0 GPA, stayed actively involved in extracurricular activities, and remained focused on my goals. I am proud to be a role model for my siblings and to show them that perseverance and dedication can create opportunities, even when circumstances feel limiting. My family’s encouragement has kept me going, and I am determined to return that support by setting an example they can follow.
Receiving this scholarship would help relieve the financial burden of pursuing higher education and allow me to focus fully on my academic and professional goals. I plan to become the first in my immediate family to graduate from college, proving to my siblings and myself that our background does not define our potential. With the support of this opportunity, I can continue working toward a future that reflects my effort, resilience, and commitment to success.
There are countless students like me, motivated, capable, and ready to succeed, who simply need the chance to be seen. Like that hundred-dollar bill, our value has always been there. With the right support, we can turn potential into lasting impact.
