Marcello Rosino Memorial Scholarship
My Italian American heritage is a deeply personal and complex part of my identity, woven into my family's history with resilience, determination, and dedication—values embodied by Marcello Rosino. My father is Italian and Puerto Rican, but he never knew his biological father, an Italian man from the Bronx. We believe my grandfather never even knew my father existed, as relationships between Puerto Rican women and Italian men were often frowned upon in the 1960s. Despite this missing connection, I have always felt a deep-rooted link to my Italian ancestry and the strength it represents.
The story of my family is one of perseverance. My father grew up without knowing his biological father, yet he never let that define him. Instead, he worked tirelessly to build a life for himself and our family, instilling in me the same values of determination, resilience, and dedication. These principles have guided me throughout my life, especially as a student and an athlete. I have spent three years playing varsity rugby, a sport that requires physical and mental toughness. The challenges I have faced on the field—grueling practices, intense matches, and the occasional injury—have only reinforced my belief in the power of resilience. Every setback has been an opportunity to grow stronger, and I know that this mindset will carry over into my academic and professional pursuits.
My education is more than just a means to a career; it is a tool I will use to positively impact the world. I am passionate about using my knowledge and experiences to uplift others, just as my father has done for me. Whether through mentoring young athletes, advocating for cultural appreciation, or pursuing a career that allows me to help underserved communities, I plan to honor my heritage by embodying the values that define it. Though marked by gaps in family history, my Italian American background has given me an unshakable foundation of perseverance and a deep sense of responsibility to create change. I also hope to be able to travel to Italy one day and experience its authenticity, immersing myself in the culture and traditions that have shaped my ancestry.
Marcello Rosino’s values are more than just words to me—they are a way of life. Through determination, resilience, and dedication, I will continue to honor my heritage and use my education to inspire and support those around me. My story is not just about where I come from, but about where I am going and the impact I hope to make along the way.
Anderson Women's Rugby Scholarship
Rugby has been a defining part of my high school experience, shaping me both as an athlete and as a person. For the past three years, I have been a varsity player, and throughout that time, I have developed a deep appreciation for the sport’s physicality, strategy, and camaraderie. My journey has taken me beyond just playing for my high school team—I have also attended rugby camp at Emory & Henry College and multiple combines, each of which has played a crucial role in refining my skills and deepening my love for the game.
I play the position of prop/lock, and one moment that stands out vividly in my memory is my first big contact hit. It was an incredible, invigorating feeling, almost like a rite of passage into the sport. That moment gave me both confidence and a newfound aggression on the field. Rugby demands a certain mental and physical toughness, and I learned that embracing contact was key to playing effectively. However, while the physical challenge excites me, what truly makes rugby special is the team dynamic.
One of my most memorable game moments was when I did an impromptu split on a ruck, resulting in a debilitating hip sprain that put me out for quite some time. The injury was a major setback, but with months of intense physical therapy, I was able to recover and get back on the field. The experience tested my resilience and determination, reinforcing my commitment to the sport.
Rugby is the ultimate team sport. The connection between teammates is unlike anything I have ever experienced. I love how, when we kick off, we are all on the same wavelength, moving as one unit with a shared goal. The trust and chemistry built through countless hours of training and competition create a bond that extends beyond the field. We push each other to be better, not just as athletes but as individuals, teaching lessons in accountability, leadership, and resilience.
Through rugby, I have grown in ways I never expected. I have learned how to push through challenges, how to trust my teammates, and how to be both a leader and a learner. It has shaped my character, making me stronger, more disciplined, and more confident in my abilities. Rugby isn’t just a game to me—it’s a passion, a challenge, and a lifelong lesson in teamwork and perseverance.
Several colleges have accepted me to play for them, including Emory & Henry, Guilford, and the University of New Haven. However, I have not yet made this life-changing decision. This next step in my journey is one that I am carefully considering, as I look for the best fit both academically and athletically.
