When people hear the term "medicine," they tend to think of cures. But I've always been drawn to something equally valuable: comfort. I believe alleviating suffering is one of the purest expressions of compassion, and that's what draws me to anesthesiology. As an anesthesiologist, I will not only be able to support surgical teams but also advocate for patient dignity and justice, both in and out of the operating room. Among my friends, I’m usually the friend that my friends come to. They vent and ask for advice, they know that when they call m,e I’ll answer. Whether that is for comfort or for the brutal truth about their situation. I am someone who is always a comfort to my friends. My future vision stems from this feeling of responsibility to comfort and care. Following college and medical school, I plan to become an anesthesiologist not only because I am fascinated by the intersection of pharmacology, physiology, and minute-to-minute decision-making, but because I want to be a source of security and comfort in what is arguably the most vulnerable moment in another human being's life—when they are out cold and can't speak for themselves. One of my specific goals is to practice in under-staffed community clinics or hospitals that have poor regular access to specialty care. In many inner-city or rural low-income neighborhoods, the number of skilled anesthesiologists available is not good, and patients get hastened or suboptimal perioperative care. I wish to impact. I envision myself working in a hospital where I can provide top-notch, one-on-one anesthesia care to those who would otherwise slip through the cracks—patients who have language barriers, disabilities, financial constraints, or traumatic histories. I hope to establish practices with a focus on informed consent, trauma-informed care, and culturally responsive communication. Aside from direct frontline clinical practice, I look forward to advocating for more equitable access to anesthesia and pain control, both in the United States and globally. Millions of patients worldwide are having procedures without adequate anesthesia due to resource deficiencies, which isn't only a healthcare failure but also a human rights violation. My hope is to collaborate with such organizations as Lifebox or Doctors Without Borders in providing safe anesthetic procedures and training for health care professionals working in developing regions. Education will also be central to my mission. After college, I plan to mentor pre-med students from underrepresented populations and speak at high schools and colleges about healthcare professions, specifically specialties like anesthesiology that are less flashy but deeply impactful. By showing my journey, I hope to show that compassionate medicine comes in many forms, and that you don't have to be in the spotlight to make a difference. Whether I'm helping a child feel safe before surgery, stabilizing a critically ill airway in an emergency, or educating nurses in a far-off clinic overseas, I wish each action I take to ease suffering and restore dignity. Anesthesiology is not sedation or surgery—it's about trust, respect, and being present. And along the way, I believe I can make my community, and the world, a little kinder, one patient at a time.
