I am inspired by my experiences living with type 1 diabetes (T1D) for 10 years and by molecular biology, immunology and public health. I constantly seek exciting opportunities to advance my knowledge and experience in health related settings. My dream career is one that combines research for the treatment and cure of T1D and other autoimmune diseases, provides holistic patient care through physical and mental health wellness, and promotes quality healthcare access for all.

I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes (T1D) on December 12, 2015. I poke myself with needles daily to insert my insulin pump infusion sets and check my blood glucose. I count carbohydrates for every meal and snack that I eat. I must interrupt my day to make sure my sugars are within a safe range before I drive, run track, sleep, or take tests and quizzes at school. But living with T1D is not all bad. It helps keep me disciplined and focused and made me responsible beyond my years. It has also taught me empathy, and appreciation for my health and opportunities. It introduced me to potential careers in healthcare and the benefits of research. My unique experiences living with T1D have helped shaped my perspectives on life, and my desire to pursue a career in medicine, research, and advocacy.
I am fortunate to have known amazing and compassionate healthcare providers. From the day I was diagnosed to my now quarterly diabetes checkups – my providers have impressed me with their great skills and knowledge. They are like superheroes who teach me how stay safe and healthy. I have the utmost respect for their ability to impact patients’ lives daily.
I used to live on multiple-daily insulin injections and checked my sugars with a glucometer 15 times a day. The automated insulin delivery system I wear today makes my days so less cumbersome and is a product of countless years and research trials. My great grandpa and great uncle died from T1D complications many years ago. My younger brother also lives with T1D. Prevention of autoimmune diseases, especially when we know there is a genetic component, is an area of special interest to me. I aspire to protect my family, and others like us, from any further T1D devastation.
A wonderful way to reach patients and make a big difference is through advocacy. I have fundraised and championed for improvements to healthcare access for nearly ten years through Breakthrough T1D (formerly the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation). By speaking to my community, business leaders, and lawmakers, I have found gratification and success in fighting for improved programs for diabetes research and access to basic rights such as affordable insulin.
I believe I can make the most of my life experiences by becoming a physician-researcher who advocates for quality healthcare access for all. I am excited to go to college and train and be a superhero to provide excellent patient care. I would be honored to participate in research of autoimmune disease treatments and preventions until the day we find a cure. I am passionate about using my voice to raise awareness and fight for changes to causes that are dear to me. Thank you for this opportunity.
