Bio

Ever since I was little, I have had a strong interest in learning. No matter the subject, from history to biology to aviation, I enjoy digging into new information. In the past, I never would have imagined myself pursuing a career in aviation; however, the experience of pursuing my private pilot license ignited a spark in me that no other field has. I consider myself an independent person in the sense that I'm used to pursuing my goals on my own. Nonetheless, the importance of having a support system of friends and family willing to help me has become apparent in recent months, and so I'm really glad that I have people like that around. I hope that I can be the support that someone else needs both in my personal life and through my career. I'm excited to pursue a career in aviation, and I hope that earning money by applying to scholarships will help me reduce the financial burden of training so that I can fully focus on becoming the best pilot I can be.

If someone had asked me a couple of years ago if I'd be interested in an aviation career, I would have laughed at them and responded "No!" Now, on the cusp of earning my private pilot certificate, my answer would be much different. The story of how I became interested in aviation starts with a car ride and a conversation. One day in late 2021, while my dad and I were driving, we got on the topic of future careers, and he asked me if I would ever be interested in flying a plane. Having gotten over my fear of flying years ago, I considered it for a moment and responded casually, "Yeah, I might like to fly a plane one day." Later that year, when my birthday rolled around on November 29th, I received a very surprising gift from my parents in the form of an envelope. I opened the envelope to see a printed-out order confirmation for an intro flight at a local flight school. Needless to say, I was ecstatic to experience flight in a small aircraft, as well as in the pilot's seat, for the first time. However, I was also a little apprehensive, as I had no idea what to expect from the experience. Driving up to the flight school, I certainly didn't expect this to be a life-changing experience. I thought maybe I would have some fun, take a few pictures, then go home. I can't say I remember much about my first pre-flight experience, but the moment we rolled onto the runway and took off for the first time will always remain in my memory. The view was different than that which I had experienced flying as a passenger with commercial airlines, and I could see much more than I had ever before. I could see the runway stretching out before us, could feel the moment we rotated, and at that moment I felt a childlike sense of wonder. For the most part, all my fear instantly melted away, though the more bumpy response of the small Cessna 172 to wind and rough air did take some getting used to. Time seemed to fly as we departed the pattern and went through a series of maneuvers, from basic climbs, descents, and turns, to steep turns and slow flight. While I was, of course, assisted by my instructor, I got to perform many of these maneuvers with my own two hands, which brought me great joy and confidence. Eventually, we landed back at the airport, and I got out of the aircraft with a huge smile on my face. Since then I decided to pursue earning my private pilot certificate, and, ultimately, pursue a career as a pilot. I've been learning more and more about what it means to be a leader ever since. Being a leader means never backing down from a challenge. I've faced many challenges throughout my life, from the mundane challenge of earning a great score on the SAT, to taking care of myself and my younger sister while my parents were with my terminally ill brother in the hospital. Being a leader also means asking for help from others. The very nature of flight requires reliance on, and trust in, numerous people including mechanics, your co-pilot, aerospace engineers, air traffic controllers, and many more. I have had to ask for help in my life more times than I can count. I strive to become a kind, reliable, and courageous leader so that I can be the best pilot I can be.
