I have participated in volunteer opportunities through my time in high school being involved in clubs such as Key Club and National Honor society. Probably my favorite part of these clubs is being able to see first hand the impact it can have as others. This can be as little as seeing the kindergarteners' faces light up when they hear they are going to have helpers in the classroom. I really just want to leave somewhere better than I left it or make someone's day even slightly better. It brings me so much satisfaction to know that what I do makes a positive impact on my community. Alongside volunteering, sports have been a major part of my life for as long as I can remember. It makes me very sad to be parting with these sports going into college but I don’t want to give them up completely. I want to continue my education to one day be able to help other athletes continue doing what they love. This is what has ultimately inspired me to become a sports medicine physician. I am genuinely interested in this field and I want to turn my interest into a lifelong profession. I hope that one day I will be able to relate to my future patients, give them their sparks back, and treat them so that they are able to get back to living their lives. As my academics have already shown, I am a very motivated person and I am willing to put in the hard work. It is through this that I know I am capable of pursuing this difficult career path and I am ultimately sure that this is the path I am meant to take. There is no doubt in my mind that I will reach this goal of mine and I am very confident that I will be a future sports medicine physician. I also hope that, through my pursuit of this career, I will one day be able to help my parents financially. Since the pandemic, my father has been in and out of work. He lost his small business due to Covid-19 and wasn’t able to get back into work for a while. He was in and out of retirement trying to find small jobs to support our household as much as he could. At the time we were living off of my mothers teacher’s salary which was at times very challenging. This was an especially difficult time as my family was still financially recovering from the medical bills of my dad’s brain hemorrhage treatment and my sister's heart surgery. These medical setbacks, although very difficult to face, brought me a sense of inspiration to want to help others who had to go through these type of events. As of right now, my dad is working as a sub trying to build up enough so that he will soon be able to fully retire. Through seeing this struggle, I have tried to become completely financially independent because I don’t want to burden my family financially. This has inspired me to provide for myself, specifically through the pursuance of a fulfilling career. I hope that one day I will be able to give back to my parents for all they have done for me. I am passionate about sports medicine and how it will allow me to give back to my community and I am also driven to be successful for my parents.

I’d be lying if I said tennis didn’t ultimately shape me into who I am today. Growing up, I played more sports than I could count. My identity revolved around athletics and even my social circle was filled with my fellow teammates. From a young age, it was very clear who I was: an athlete. I loved this title and it felt good being looked at in this light. Something I didn’t love however was that, outside athletics, I was quiet. And that was it. There wasn’t much else to say about me other than that I played sports and didn’t talk. I felt as though my true character was being hidden under a mask that I couldn’t seem to take off. Many people say that sports have made them leaders, however for me, sports provided something of a much greater significance. Ultimately, high school athletics gave me a voice that I didn’t know I had. There’s nothing wrong with being quiet, but to a degree, it can make you feel insignificant. At least, that’s how I felt. Years and years of my life went by being known as “the quiet girl”. This label only seemed to push me further back into my closed-off shell. In middle school, especially during the pandemic, I would go all day every day without talking to a single person, and yes I wish I was exaggerating. It was sadly a rare occurrence for me to open my mouth at all. I looked in the mirror and hated who I saw, not because of my outward appearance but instead because I felt like, no matter what I did, I couldn’t change. I saw myself as hopeless, an unfixable mess just taking up space. The only place where I was able to find a social outlet was through sports. I genuinely don’t know what mental state I’d be in today if sports hadn’t kept me grounded during what I consider to be the hardest years of my life. When I got into high school I was socially terrified, especially when it came to sports. In the beginning, I was stumbling, not knowing how to break out of my self-isolation. It was through this challenge that I found growth. It was undeniably a difficult start for me, constantly listening to the little voice in my head telling me to just stay quiet. I wasn’t able to find my footing until I found tennis. When playing tennis I had a sense of confidence, not exactly sure where it came from but I knew I thrived on the court. I learned through tennis that the only way I’m ever going to find success is if I put myself out there. Since then I have grown significantly, I improved athletically while also building a mindset of self-worth. I stopped watching others from the sidelines and instead decided to share my own voice. Looking at the people and athletes around me, I finally feel as though my playing field has been leveled. I can proudly say that I haven’t heard someone call me quiet in a good couple years now. I know that nobody’s going to refer to me as the loudest person in the room, but I know that just being a part of the conversation is an accomplishment in itself. This confidence has given me the freedom to seek success with no barriers. Shy little middle school me wouldn’t believe it if I showed them my growth, growth that wouldn’t have been possible without my involvement in tennis.

I have been playing soccer, in addition to other sports, for as long as I can remember. My childhood seemed to be based around what field or what court I’d find myself next. With all this time playing sports, I have seen many people around me get hurt, often significantly worse than what happened to me. I knew that to a lot of people, my injury looked like nothing, and if I was one of those people, I likely would’ve thought the same. In a soccer game my sophomore year, a simple kick in my ankle caused it to bruise and swell to the point where it was hard to walk. It wasn’t as crazy as breaking my leg, but it did put me out for a few days. I was frustrated by this injury, not because of the pain or that I was missing out on playing time, but instead because the injury seemed so foolish that it shouldn’t have really been an injury at all. Yet through my frustration, I was led down the path of sports medicine, all because of this small bruise. I have always been a good student, always excelling in my classes; however, unlike regular, required subjects, sports medicine made me actually want to learn. No more than a couple hours after that same game I became entangled in a string of web searches, not really sure what I was looking for. I found myself falling down a rabbit hole of what may seem like useless information to some, but to me, was that of fascination. It began with a simple search of “what is a contusion”, confused by its actual meaning. Not long after, my google feed transformed into a plethora of medical terms and injuries that I had neither heard of nor seen before. My frustration was lost and was instead replaced with a sense of inspiration. As a kid, I never really knew what to say when asked the challenging question of what I wanted to be when I grew up. I was constantly changing my mind: one day saying I wanted to be an archeologist and the next a princess. However, since this injury, I have become consistent in my answer saying “I’m going to be a sports medicine physician.” At this point in time, there is no doubt in my mind when I say sports medicine is where I belong and that it will continue to be in my future and career. This injury, although very small, ultimately brought to light the path that I now know to be right. I know that, in the grand scheme of my life, I won’t be adding this event to any list of great accomplishments. However, as I’m still trying to figure out who I am and what my life means, this event has pushed me a couple steps in the right direction.

Throughout my life, I have always tried to find some sort of purpose, whether it be a personal achievement or a community impact. However for a long time I never really knew what my purpose ultimately was. Through my development in high school I have learned many things about myself, both good and bad. I’d say the most significant things that I learned about myself is my passion for sports medicine and my personal outlook on life. This passion for sports medicine goes hand in hand with many of my other values which I hold at a very high standard. I hope that in my future this career path and my morals will be able to bring me fulfillment in my everyday life. There are currently two activities in my life that I hold the highest importance: my involvement in community service and my involvement in sports. I have participated in volunteer opportunities through my time in high school being involved in clubs such as Key Club and National Honor society. Probably my favorite part of these clubs is being able to see first hand the impact it can have as others. Going from playing baseball and doing karate to playing my main sports all 4 years of highschool. These sports have helped me shape me as a person and I will forever be grateful for the friendships it has helped me create along the way. It makes me very sad to be parting with these sports going into college but I don’t want to give them up completely. I want to continue my education to one day be able to help athletes with a passion similar to mine to be able to continue doing what they love. I am genuinely interested in this field and I want to turn my interest into a lifelong profession. I hope that one day I will be able to relate to my future patients, give them their sparks back, and give them the ability to freely live their lives whether that means getting back on the field or being able to do the tasks which they did prior to experiencing an injury. Although I know that I won’t be participating in these specific activities all my life, I hope that their essence follows me throughout my life. These aspirations have inspired me to push myself in every aspect whether it be in academics, in my relationships with others, or in my impact on the community. I am driven to one day reach this goal of being able to live my life still being involved in sports while positively being able to help my community.
    Grace and Growth Scholarship
Throughout my high school experience, I've held a lot of responsibilities both in the classroom and out. I am a highly active student involved in a wide array of clubs including being a member of Key Club, an officer for National Honors Society, my class's student Vice President, and I'm a current member of 3 varsity level sports (soccer, basketball, and tennis). In all of these extracurriculars I am required to both successfully work with my peers and teammates and, in a lot of instances, be a leader. In the sports I play I am looked at as a leader, especially now that I am an upperclassman. It is my job, in this case, to encourage and help guide my teammates to be the best that we can be. With NHS a being student Vice President it is my duty to take responsibility for school events and work collaboratively to organize the volunteer opportunities. I'd say however that the most impactful group I have been a part of is Key Club. My favorite part about Key Club is when we get to go to the different elementary schools in our district. We get to be in a classroom and interact with the kids, helping them with their work and having fun with them at the same time. One thing that these kids have shown me is that I want to continue positively helping people throughout my career. This specifically has inspired me to be a doctor so that I can see the impact that I'm having on the patients. I love the environment that these elementary schools have had and would love to provide the same help but in a different way to a larger array of people. This scholarship would put me one step closer to achieving that goal of being able to help people around me. This money would go a long way for me as I have one sister already in college and another looking to pursue that same path. I hope to shorten the time of my bachelor's degree so I would be paying for more classes with less time to build up the funds to pay for them. I would be very grateful for this scholarship and would put in to great use. This scholarship in addition to others I intend to apply to will significantly help me get to the point where I wouldn't have to worry about my financial status and could focus on getting to the places I want to go.
