It was a warm summer night in Marvin, North Carolina. It was the summer before everyone went off to college, so in a sense we felt free of our responsibilities. What was a group of teenagers supposed to do? I lived in a relatively small town, one where most people alternate between frequenting the local Target and the shopping center ten minutes away. My friends and I would often lament this and claim there's nothing to do, but I think that even if there was something else, we would've winded up doing what we always did. We would drive around town, talking about everything and nothing. The music would vary depending on who had snatched control of the aux cord that particular night. Although we all had different music tastes and would often disagree on what was played, that all changed as soon as the iconic opening to "Style" by Taylor Swift began to play. I couldn't tell you exactly what it is about "Style" that connected my friends and I in this way, or what about it made us all forget our troubles for a bit as we screamed along to the lyrics we knew all too well. And, as much as my guy friends would protest, they were usually the ones chanting the lyrics louder than any of us. For the three minutes and fifty-one seconds that "Style" played, it was like we were suspended in time. Now, the song never fails to bring a smile to my face. I'm reminded of carefree nights with my friends, and I'm content with knowing that no matter how far away we all are from one another, "Style" will never fail to bring us together. We still listen to it when we're home for the summer. Every time it plays, it's like we're transported back to that perfect summer. "Style" by Taylor Swift brings my friends and I a sense of normalcy, and contains countless memories. Honestly, I think what makes this song so special to my friends and I is that in a way, it was able to convince us that its words were true. Maybe, we wouldn't have to remain in that moment in time. Maybe, we could move on to the next chapter and still never go out of style. As cheesy as it sounds, it has consistently served as an affirmation that I live by. Even when we come crashing down, we come back every time. We can always come back. I find solace in that, and that's what makes "Style" by Taylor Swift my favorite song on '1989' by far.
