Meet an unstoppable force in the world of chemical engineering and bioprinting! As a determined master's student, I am relentlessly pursuing my passion for 3D bioprinting while earning my degree in chemical engineering. Life has thrown its fair share of challenges my way, but I refuse to be held back. Battling ADHD from an early age, I became even more tenacious when I developed a heart condition, which led me to discover innovative coping strategies without medication. My journey has been marked by overcoming medical hurdles, conquering fears, and persevering through academic challenges. Recently, I received a diagnosis of a rare blood disorder and EDS, pushing me to forge ahead with even greater resolve. Despite these obstacles, I remain committed to my dreams. My journey has already seen numerous milestones, including obtaining a B.S. in Chemical Engineering, competing in Miss Rhode Island USA 2023, and winning AAPS Best Abstract for 2023. I also dedicated my efforts to a noble cause by raising over $500 for the Lymphoma and Leukemia Society this year. My ambitions know no bounds, as I aim to complete my Master's degree and hope to continue to my Ph.D. with MBA. I believe that every experience, no matter how challenging, has shaped me into the resilient and passionate individual I am today. Growing up, we didn't have an abundance of luxuries. My mother was pursuing her education at community college, even while she was expecting me, and my father worked tirelessly to support our family.     Research is the thing about the graduate experience that excites me the most. My research mostly pertains to 3D bioprinting, my main project is designing a replacement for an intervertebral disc which would allow many people all over the work with degenerative disc disease a new lease on life. Being a graduate student can often be overwhelming especially when you are trying to balance your time, energy, and finances. To keep my mind, body, and soul healthy during the challenges this chapter of my life brings I do many things. First is taking my medications, having Hashimoto's means my thyroid will never produce on its own the way my body needs to function, this allows me to have the energy I need. It can be difficult to find the time to work out so I do my best to choose the more active path every day. That could be taking the stair or going for a walk during lunch. I am very lucky to also have a yoga studio a 5-minute walk from my office if I ever want to change it up. If also important to eat well with a lot of nutrient-dense foods that are delicious. As a student, I read a lot about the subjects I am studying but in order to keep my mind alert and well rounded I try to read things about other subject matters. I read financial, historical biography, and fantasy books mostly. I love to listen to podcasts like 'ologies' and 'financial feminist' and the occasional true crime. It's nice to step away from the school mental headspace from time to time. It also keeps me sane to have a cleaning checklist so I get stuff done throughout the week and don't have it pile up and get overwhelming.     In my first year of graduate school, I encountered a life-altering experience that not only challenged me physically but also took a significant toll on my mental health. Amidst the rigorous academic demands, I found myself grappling with a mysterious and debilitating health issue. The uncertainty of my condition, combined with the fear of sudden death, made this journey an emotionally tumultuous one. I received concerning blood work results, indicating a low platelet count and the presence of giant platelets. These findings pointed to possible autoimmune blood disorders, platelet or bleeding disorders, or even leukemia. Though my lab studies cancer I didn't think I would need to think about having cancer. Cancer was ruled out a few weeks in but they didn't know what's wrong with me. My hematologist, Dr. Ingham, conducted a thorough analysis of my entire blood work history, revealing that my platelet count and shape had never been normal, even from a young age when I was just three years old. He ordered various tests, such as platelet function tests, Von Willebrand factor, and ANA, to ascertain the cause of the abnormal platelet behavior. While I tested negative for most conditions, the platelet aggregation test yielded perplexing results. Basically, my platelets did not react as expected to epinephrine, yet they remained within the normal range for other factors. My diagnosis of an undiagnosable platelet disorder. I was left with the need for extreme caution, injury avoidance, and never being allowed to consume alcohol and take NSAIDs. The constant fear of my condition worsening and the potential consequences are at times overwhelming. One of the most challenging aspects was navigating through the academic expectations while struggling with my health. The pressure to excel in my studies and conduct research for my thesis weighed heavily on me. It seemed like an insurmountable task to balance my academics and health concerns simultaneously. Explaining my situation to professors and requesting accommodations for medical appointments was a daunting task. I was worried about being perceived as incapable or using my health issues as an excuse for underperformance. I went an entire month before I told my principal investigator due to this fear. My journey will never be over with the disorder but I have decided to not let it scare me anymore. This year I competed in Miss Rhode Island USA which is something I would have never done. I have never been a beauty queen or really done make-up. In high school, I would get self-conscious showing my shoulders and chest. However, I decided I am going to do the things that scare me even if that means my walking in a bikini is live-streamed worldwide. Calculus, the study of change and motion, lies at the heart of our ability to model and understand complex biological systems, fluid dynamics, thermodynamics, forces, motion, reaction rates, reaction mechanisms, equilibrium conditions, and energy in the context of 3D bioprinting. This foundational mathematical tool has proven indispensable in advancing cutting-edge technologies and fostering innovative solutions to pressing challenges in the realm of bioprinting. In the domain of 3D bioprinting, calculus plays a pivotal role in designing and optimizing tissue-engineered constructs. Understanding how cells and biomaterials interact and evolve over time is paramount in achieving successful bioprinted structures that mimic native tissues. This is where differentiation, a fundamental concept of calculus, becomes instrumental. By computing derivatives, we can grasp the rate at which cells proliferate and differentiate within a bioprinted scaffold, allowing us to tailor growth factors and optimize the printing process to create functional and viable tissues.     In the face of various challenges, one recent experience stands out as the most trying in my life. Beginning my Master's Degree in Chemical Engineering was an exciting and enlightening journey. However, just a month before finals, I received concerning blood work results, indicating a low platelet count and the presence of giant platelets. These findings pointed to possible autoimmune blood disorders, platelet or bleeding disorders, or even leukemia – a far cry from what I had envisioned for my start in grad school. With these alarming results, I was referred to a hematologist at the Lifespan Cancer Institute in my hometown, where hematologists are scarce. Early on, leukemia was ruled out as my white blood cell count was normal. Dr. Ingham conducted a thorough analysis of my entire blood work history, revealing that my platelet count had never been normal, even from a young age when I was just three years old. He ordered various tests, such as platelet function tests, Von Willebrand factor, and ANA, to ascertain the cause of the abnormal platelet behavior. While I tested negative for most conditions, the platelet aggregation test yielded perplexing results – my platelets did not react as expected to epinephrine, yet they remained within the normal range for other factors. This led to a frustrating diagnosis of an undiagnosable platelet disorder, leaving me with the need for extreme caution, injury avoidance, and the cessation of alcohol and NSAIDs. Nevertheless, I refused to let this condition deter me from my goals. Amidst this health challenge, I persevered and maintained my focus on both my academic pursuits and my research on 3D bioprinting. Moreover, I initiated a fundraising campaign for the Lymphoma and Leukemia Society, displaying my commitment to supporting others even while facing my own struggles. An exceptional testament to my determination was my participation in Miss Rhode Island USA 2023, showcasing my resilience and belief in overcoming obstacles. Additionally, my efforts in AAPS PharmSci 2023 earned me the recognition of winning Best Abstract, which further fueled my passion for making a difference in the medical field. As I continue to navigate life with this undiagnosable platelet disorder, I am aware that the road ahead may present further uncertainties. However, my resolve to pursue my dreams remains unshaken. I am currently exploring ways to create a support group that empowers women to advocate for themselves in medical, academic, and professional settings. A goal born from my personal experiences and the desire to make a positive impact on others' lives. Moreover, I aspire to pursue a Ph.D. in the future, broadening my knowledge and expertise to effect meaningful change in the scientific community. In conclusion, the challenges I faced during the start of my Master's Degree in Chemical Engineering were certainly demanding, especially with the diagnosis of an undiagnosable platelet disorder on top of all my previous conditions.
