Bio

Hi, my name is Sophia Bains and I am hoping to transfer as a sophomore in college from Carson-Newman University to Colorado Mesa University. This past year has been a challenge for many reasons, but ultimately it has made me a stronger person. I have learned to stand up for myself and things that are important to me. Through this change, I have discovered that I am passionate about creating an equitable society in the United States and across the globe. I am not yet quite sure what I want to do after college, but I know I want to make a difference. A career that has been calling to me lately is becoming a human rights expert, and eventually working for the UN. This past year I have been tasked with writing a 17 page "mini thesis" on a topic of our choice. I chose to discuss the advantages of the ratification of CEDAW in the United States. I have been a swimmer since I was five years old, and I plan to continue my collegiate career at Colorado Mesa. Swimming is something that has bound my family together; as one of six kids who all swim, swimming quickly became not only a sport, but also provided endless bonding material for my family and I to discover together. My siblings are honestly my best friends, and family is a huge part of my life. From daily family dinners, to Sunday spent with the family, and swim meets taking up most of our weekends, my siblings and I are very close due to the amount of time we spent with each other growing up. Thank you for considering me as a potential candidate for your generous contributions to my education!

Hard work. Growing up one of six kids, I always knew that I would have to sponsor my own education if I wanted one. Of course, our parents wanted to give us the world, and they did. Each of my siblings and I grew up swimming. For a multitude of reasons; to stay active, to have something to do, to possibly help pay for college later on, and because we loved it. Swimming isn't a normal sport. To be a competitive swimmer means spending at least 15 hours a week at the pool. It means waking up at 4:30am to be at 5am practice three times a week. It means starring at a black line for two hours and often times, crying in your goggles because the sets hurt so much. It means experiencing the constant struggle of staying awake to finish your homework because you can't forget about your education. Through all of these experiences, my siblings and I gained a work ethic that is unique. And I am extremely grateful for it. My work ethic allowed me to graduate in the top 20 of my class of 300 with an above 4.0 GPA. It allowed me to become a team leader at Chick-fil-A and helped me work my way into the Honors Program at my current university. Without my work ethic, I wouldn't consider myself the same Sophia I am today.

My oldest sister, Bella, has been the most influential female leader to me. First, let me describe how Bella is a leader. Fresh out of college, Bella applied for the Peace Corps and she denied because she did not have enough experience. So, instead of giving up, Bella went to work for the Mercy Corps in Baltimore. After that, she came back to Colorado and worked for the Ameri-Corps. Finally, after working for three different Corps was she accepted to the Peace Corps and was sent across the ocean to teach english to women in Morocco. She learned Moroccan Arabic and helped these women in their education through teaching them english; a very useful skill to have to go on and receive a higher education. Bella is easily the most impressive woman I know. She has taught me to stand up for myself and how to be a strong independent women. It was through Bella that I learned that the U.S. has not signed what is known as the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women, also known as CEDAW, a women's rights treaty established by the United Nations. This was shocking to me, and after more research and a 17 page paper I wrote for a class, I learned how vital it is that the U.S. ratify CEDAW. After I graduate with my political science degree, I hope to go to law school, and my dream is to eventually work for the UN. Before I make it to the UN, I hope to lobby for the ratification of CEDAW in the United States.
